Gerb Productions hey brother, do you remember what tool you used for the mounting bolt on the tensioner, the one you said it was hard to get to. Im about to change mine this Saturday just wanted to know to make life easier. Thx in advance
Whats up dude i own a honda civic si 08 one day i my si was jus off bounce hard felt like a broken mount mount i pop the hood and right by the right of the motor alil under where u working at i see two bolts popping out loosen im confused how can those bolt loosen i was hoping u can help me idk if it the torque mounts blots idk im
Confused !!!
@@bryanarango7227 did u figure it out? i wanna try this myself but not sure if i'll have the proper extension or u-joint to reach it
Thanks for doing this video man I just changed my pulley and I'm still having the same sound will the bearing make a weird noise on startup if it's got a bad tensioner pulley
@@eliosantiago1045 put I light lock tight on them or they can back out I had the same issue
Thank god every single issue I’ve ran into with this car you have a tutorial. You are the man
Seriously. Lifesaver. Has saved me so much money.
He's done it all!! Gerb you have saved the 8th gen community single handedly!!! You're the best man!!!
I just want to say thank you, because of this video I was able to be ready, and got the job done in less then an hour. Next I'm tackling the Bommba Mounts!!!
Thanks so much for this tutorial man !! We had this done in 45 minutes. God bless you.
Thanks for the support
Thank you for showing us where the bolts were. Just watched the entire video before doing it myself. Thanks!
+Codenamenames I appreciate the support, glad it helped!
Man, you saved me a lot of hassle with this Japanese engineering, thanks.
Glad I can help a fellow Honda guy out 🙏🏼
Older Honda's were much easier to work on, I dont know why honda went this direction as far as making everything incredibly difficult to get to.
Good clear instruction and short video Keep up the great work buddy!
great video man, you gained a fan all the way from the Caribbean, I brought si a couple months ago and decided i want to change the pulley myself. i have all the knowledge thanks to you (y)
+TheFreshsmith That means alot to me bro. I'm glad that I helped you out! More vids to come
A tip about the belt is really easy if u got someone to help you. One person pull the tensioner the other person sets the belt on the idler
Thanks for the video my tensioner pulley took a crap on me come back home. Changing the pulley now since bears are shot
I would like to have heard the sound before you did the job. I think a friend's car has a similar problem. Video was mostly good ... you needed a second set of hands to film while you removed and reinstalled bolts.
Sounds like a whine when you start and accelerate your engine really fucking annoying when you wanna cruise😂
Thank you so much for the knowledge! I am far from being a mechanic and with your guidance i made this happen with no problems.
I'm not a mechanic either. I'm glad i could help you out man! Never stop wrenching
Thanks a lot. Same problem, not many videos on what we have to do, and you answered where that stupid tensioner was. Thanks.
Glad i could help you bro! I want to learn everything about the 8th gen si's. Done a clutch, valve adjustment, exhaust work, and more. Think it's time to pull the motor for a build lol (maybe).
Mine's all stock, but I had to replace the A/C compressor/clutch/coil. swapped out the serpentine belt while I was at it. Had to take apart the whole front end (bumper and radiator) to get the dumb thing out and probably could have saved about 2 hours if I knew I had to from the beginning! But I'm going more hands on with fixing it, saved about $400 by putting it in myself, could have saved about another $100 if I didn't have to have it evac'd. At least they refilled it after I was done for free.
All matters who you buy the car from. Mine wasn't maintained well, so i ran into some problems. For example, my clutch went lol. Only thing I don't like about the 8th gen si's are they're tight to work on. Yours will run mint when all that stuff is done.
Great stuff you got a lot of details in . Question what was the effect that you felt when the belt began to crack. I think it’s my pulley sounds kinda crazy tho
Just wanted to say thank you. My idle bearing/pulley and tension pulley/bearing busted loud as fuck it stripped the threads on my tension pulley so could not sure the bolt in. To me and my dad 10 min before we realised the threads were fine. But seriously thanks for the video . It helped us so much everything you showed was great. Thanks a lot man
Glad I could help you out bro! More diy vids coming 🔧📹🙏🏻
@Gerb Productions Thanks, you saved me from wasting a bunch of time.
The idler pulley's torque spec is 16 not 41.
What about the tensioner bolts if you don’t mind me asking? The same, 16 ft-lbs?
For some reason my belt tensioner bolt won’t go back in… like it goes in but it won’t thread to anything… no idea why
So do you have to replace the entire assembly of the tensioner or could you just replace the tensioner pulley alone?
Don't replace one, just replace all 3. Idler pulley, belt tensioner, and the belt. Around $100.
Gerb, My dude, Just did this tonight. Thanks for the videos. You are my FG2 spirit animal.
Glad i can help a fellow fg2 owner out. Thanks for the support
awesome vid. i know it's not the proper way to do things, but is it possible to just release the tension, move the belt off to the side a bit, replace the idler pulley and then easily put the belt back onto the idler pulley? basically i don't want to re-route the entire belt just to replace the idler pulley, as the previous owner cheaped out and only did the tensioner and belt last time (i know.. wtf!?)
Yes you can 🙂
I have a r18a motor and I'm having trouble finding the idler pulley and removing it. I noticed my motor is different from the si. Can someone PLEASE help !!???!!?!
Big FAN !! I really appreciate all your VIDS!! I have an 09 SI sedan 120k on it.. !! Bout a year ago I noticed whenever I turn on my AC it would start shaking...specially if I hit a red light.
did my research and work myself around the air system, filters,TB, spark plugs even my engine mounts..
I don't hear any bad sounds coming from the pulleys area.
Can one of these Pulleys be messing with my AC?
Or my AC compressor is Done?
Could be the vacuums
What is the length on the 12mm bolt where it pivots??? I broke mine and lost it.
I used your k-tuned CMC & slave replacement video to do my job on my own 08 civic si and like this video you have a habit of skipping a lot of important steps and just briefly go over something - like how much of a pain it was to get the serpentine belt back on - thats probably going to be a pain for me to get on as well but now I have to go to another youtube video to see how to do that since it isnt included in yours - which it definitely should be for the scope of what youre doing in this video. Your videos start out strong and then it seems you just want to be over with it and assume we'll 'get it' after a certain point. I'd change that about your videos if you want to get a really strong subscriber base looking for quality vehicle DIY repairs (think Chris Fix or Eric the Car Guy)
+Gahechi Esmichi I do my best with the knowledge & tools I have. I don't want the videos to be over with or else I wouldn't take the time to make them. I am still learning & improving on everything. I appreciate your opinion though. I don't really care about subscriber base right now, but I understand what you mean 👌🏼
I also used your video to replace the CMC on my 08 civic si fa5 and it was very very helpful and made it easy for me except for an important step (if im not mistaken) you missed to mention on the video and that is to bleed the line after replacing the cmc using the slave drain plug and refill the reservoir as you do so to regain the pressure.
But man as you said you are walking us through your experience and improving in the process and as a fellow Honda DIYer im really thanksful for your videos. Im subscribed! Keep it up bro.
hahahahah you are right ! This guys opens up the topic in detail and all that and was about to be the best youtube video in that topic until he started fighting that belt hahaha.. You can see that he spent about to hours to replace the belt because it was dark when he was done hahah... but yeah lets go watch another vide that talks about hot to get the belt on now hahah
I gotta agree with Mr. Esmichi-you're skipping too many steps:( Appreciate the effort though!:)-John in Texas
My car makes a whining noise and my friend took a listen and said it was the idler pulley was yours making any kinda noise? Ive replaced the belt and tensioner beforehand thinking it may have been the cause, but im going to go ahead and replace the idler in hopes it may be the problem. Great video man
+Brian Chang Mine had a slight whining noise, when I changed belt, tensioner, and idler, it fixed everything. How many miles does your car have? And thank you, appreciate that.
Def what i needed to see. My belt is all brown
+Kalvin Sothy def a good idea to replace it, especially if there are cracks/dry rot
My tensioner is now making a little noise. Can I buy the pulley itself or go for the entire unit? 👍🏼
Thank you for this awesome idea. Just put my belt back on. Still can't undo the bolt on the crankshaft pulley though because it's now in 2 pieces and the inner turns while I lock the outer piece.
Did you ever get this alleviated? This also happened to me (crank pulley separated into 2). Placed the pulley remover I rented from AutoZone on it and wedged my breaker bar into a solid point under the car. Gave the key a quick blip and the pulley rolled right off.
I think this may be my problem on my boosted fg2. I acquired a death rattle that’s making me fear the worst. Gonna try removing the belt and turning it on see if I hear this noise. If not it’s definitely something in the timing chain. I’m hoping this noise is the tensioner !
tensioner pulley 40 to 45 NM, Idler pulley 22 to 26 NM.
Thanks, exactly what I needed. K20A3 is pretty much the same
+Brandon Atkinson Glad i helped you out bro! K20a3? Accord?
It's a 02 si, the euro si lol
Hatchback Ep3?
+Gerb Productions Yes sir!
My boy has one, never been in it though. They quick?
Forgot about your channel for a while. How was I not subbed on this account too? Im gunna stick a k20/24 in mine at 200k just like you did at 200k
Idk, but hopefully you are now 🤙🏼
Very helpful. Thanks for making this
Can you please provide link to online manual?
hey got a question. when u put the tensioner pulley back did it give issues where the pulley would lock up. and The bearing popping on some after trying to tighten it back on I'm stuck at this point thanks ..
Question, to remove just the pulley on the belt tensioner does it go out by moving it anti-clockwise or clockwise? I got confuse in one of the video that says clockwise to get it out. thanks.
Thanks for the vid. This is what i needed. I want to change my tensioner pulley and idler pulley on my fn2.
I think they are the same pattern.
No problem man, glad you liked it. It was actually easier to do than i thought. I'm currently doing a clutch on mine... Probably the hardest thing I've done on this car.
+Gerb Productions ill get mine fix soon. Changing clutch is a pain in the ass but good luck anyway. Thx again for the vid.
About to change my idle pulley thanks man ! Started making a humming noise hope that’s my issue
I think you’ll be good 👍🏼
You don't need to align the pulleys?
Hey man bring the beard back it looks good on you… also thanks for the info I’ll be doing my tensioner pulley bracket and my alternator. I’ll be looking through your vids for sure.
Appreciate that! It's been awhile since I've had the beard...I really like the clean shave look lately, so do the ladies. I'll have to flip a coin or something haha.
Do not tension the top pulley to 41! 16fp all of them
why ? its 14mm, and 12mm bracket blots are already 16ft
Facts
Good job on the step by step boss!!!
Thanks bro!
friend or subscriber someone has an idea why when you turn on the civic 2007 you hear a sizzle and when you accelerate or move the steering wheel you hear more but when you have a time on stop listening, it is worth mentioning that this is done in cold temperatures in the morning to be more precise and that the address liquid is correct please help
Thanks for the video, just wish you went all the way with removing the tensioner pulley assembly and how you went about installing the new one. Also, is the torque on the tensioner the same 41 on the pulley and 16 on the bolts? Didn’t catch that part either.
My 02 si idler pully wouldn’t budge when I used the impact gun on it, your lucky yours was so easy
That's what i'm saying
Idler pulley was the easiest for me, breaker bar takes car of that. It was getting the bolt back on the tensioner pulley and the one behind the tensioner bracket as well as actually getting the belt back on for some reason getting it off was easy but getting it on that was a freakin nightmare i had to use the wrench/breaker bar like how gerb did to loosen tensioner i sat on it while it was keeping it kind of loose and use two hands to pry that bitch on i figured out rolling the pulley will align the rest of it but i was glad it fixed my whining i was worried it was my water pump that was doing it
What is the torque spec for the top idler pulley ? And what is your source
What brand did you use for the tensioner pulley ?
How are you? Mine only when the car is in cold temperature completely grinds a little at the beginning or when the humidity of the water arrives? What could be a belt or tensioner?
Thanks excellent video.
Nelson Alejandro A' I have the same problem and I’ve heard it’s the starter
Thank you so much for what you do!
Np man, glad I can help
Nice vid. I own the 2007 but 1.8, I guess same procedure, right? Thanks mate!
+Gonzalo Soto Thanks buddy! The R18? I would say so, as long as your pulleys are in the same location.
Would the tensioner rattle if it was loose? I have a 2005 Acura TSX and when I'm stopped in gear, there is a rattling sound coming from that area. It gets very loud when the AC is on too. It gets almost silent when in park or neutral. I don't know what it is, but it's so annoying.
That's funny. To be honest, I have a rattling sound when my ac is on as well. It could either be that or a heat shield. Try replacing the tensioner. I bought a gates one from rock auto.
I already tightened the heat shields. Someone else said that it could be the engine mounts. I think I'm going to just take it back to the Acura dealership and have them look.
Wouldn't hurt. Engine mounts will probably bee expensive. My car needs them.
Gerb Productions how did you remove the tensioner pulley? I'm having trouble. I can't fit my socket wrench because it's too tight. the ac line is in the way and also that device with the black wires
@@Weezybaby7o7 I just removed that bolt with a 1 inch extension and a 3 in extension in a ratchet and a 12 mm socket you have to go behind the AC line
was the noise coming from the pulley or tensioner or the belt itself? anymore noise after the replacement?
I believe it was coming from the pulley/tensioner.. no more noise after I replaced it
Thanks for the awesome video!Early in the video you mentioned a manual online. May you please share the link to the torque specs?
Thanks bro... Can't seem to find the link for it
Once you have the idle pulley and bracket out of the way, can you just replace the tensioner pulley without removing the bracket? I know there is nut on the back side of the bracket. Can you hold that nut while trying to replace the bolt with the new pulley? Is there enough room? I know there are two bolts that hold on the tensioner bracket. I can't tell from your video but can you access the other bolt on the other side of the pulley with a socket and ratchet? Just trying to see what is the easier approach. Thanks.
Lucky me I dropped a nut and I spent hours trying to locate it and I finally gave up went and purchased a new net and used boil tape to hold it in while I reinstalled a new pulley on the tensioner I guess Honda didn't put a nut fixed to that tensioner because they thought it would be get stripped
Dude I know its been a while but check your tensioner. I just put on the same Gates kit from rock auto yesterday on my 09. New belt, tensioner and idler pulley. After I installed I noticed the tensioner wear indicator was just about at the "replace belt" mark. I'm gonna call Gates Monday. I think the belt they include is to long.
What the.... I don't have this issue. Maybe they mixed in the wrong belt size or something, very weird..
Went out yesterday and bought a gates k070644 belt. It is a 64.4in belt, belongs on the 06-11 1.8L without A/C. The k070649 that came with the kit was to long. Now the arrow on my tensioner is right in the center of the raised area. Idk man weird lol.
So why exactly did you take the tire off I saw you do everything from the top?
Makes it easier to slide belt on to back pulley. Just the way I like to do it
On my black 2011 fg2. all I did was the 14mm wrench with a breaker bar, all done no wheel remove! ( :
What's the part number for the idler pulley
What type of sounds did it make to make you think it was bad? I hear a squeak some times when a start and when I shift gears (manual) or if there is to much load on the engine. I'm pretty sure its the belt and the tensioner but would like some input!
Jep , thats them... it started on my kswapped em2 coupe like that, and today the idler pulley bearing literally just BLEW apart after a very scary sound & started smoking and shit... iron filling everywhere lol 😅
Ordering new pulley and belt tomorrow!
Thanks for all the awesome guides! I was just wondering what manual you found online, if you wouldn't mind sharing a link or something.
My cousin was a honda tech so i asked him to print me out a guide, so idk what it's called... I just studied it & am still studying it
Ah, I gotcha. Well, you're doing God's work making guides no one else is or that don't have images on the forums anymore. Thanks again!
Thanks man ... you help me a lot...
So do you with the support!
Which idler pulley and tensioner pulley did you get from Rock Auto? I want to get the same idler pulley you have. Going to do the same job on my civic si
+Javier Carvajal I got the gates ones. In my opinion, they make some of the better pulleys, belts, etc. Let me know how you make out with your si man
Did you have to take out the tensioner pulley off of the new assembly in order to get that bolt that was hard to reach?
No, you can get back there, it's just a pain. Take your time with it.
You have to start earlier in the morning..It's pretty dark out now..haha
I noticed the autoparts stores sell the tensioner pulley alone, without the rest of the assembly. Is there any reason why you’d want to replace it all and not just the pulley?
I was just thinking the same. It’s 100% the bearing on that tensioner that goes out. Not the actual tensioner bracket. I’m gonna do this today because mine is shot shot. I’ll let you know if it fixes my issue.
Thank you 🙏
Appreciate the video, but after enduring an aftermarket water pump giving out around 25K in my 1994 Civic EX , I have been pro Honda OEM parts ever since, for critical parts. Did you know that some aftermarket oil filters will starve the Honda 4 engines? That's according to the head tech at my dealership. He also recommends changing my oil every 3K and not at the manufactured recommendations, if I want any longevity out of my engine. Did that myself on my '94 Civic EX and her odo read 278 K or so when I finally sold her for $550.00:)-John in Texas
Oem for life man, learned my lesson plenty of times. What oil filters are those?? I usually change my oil every 3k Miles, sometimes 4K though. Dude, older Honda’s are amazing 👌🏼
He did not specify, and I did not ask. Yah, my '94 was involved in several fender benders , rear ended a Cadillac and still clocked a few miles. Even my 2010 Si 2 door coupe is not made as well-you can tell that the sheet metal is thinner as the door sill has some dents!
of course the head tech at the honda dealership is gonna say use oem parts from them and get ur oil changed at 3k at their business... the reason he didnt say which filters starve motors is cuz he made that up... if it was true they would be sued and it would be a known problem... his silver tongue got you to believe something cuz u didnt know any better. did he say that ur muffler bearings were bad as well?
If I just need to replace the idler and tensioner pulleys and not the belt (since that was changed 18 months ago when I had to have the condensor replaced) do I have to undo the bolts around the pulley assemblies, or can I just remove the center bolt on each and replace the pulleys alone?
Follow my exact steps man
hi, I have a 2006 civic and you mentioned they have 6 pulleys. I have a noise coming from one of them but it's the one way at the bottom. Are those reachable? if so how and do those have a different name?
Yeah, pretty sure if you take your wheel off you can reach that one. Pretty sure it's the harmonic balancer.
Hey Gerb, do you know the part number for the Tensioner Pulley BOLT for our Civic Si?
+KAnE3o1 Unfortunately, I don't. I got the whole kit on rock auto if that helps
How long did this pulley kit last you?
I'm still running it, it's been like 50-60k miles
Great thanks for making that. Can you link the forum post you read up on so I can do the same?
No problem man. Why do you need a forum, you have me lol.
Could you tell me the best way to get the belt back on man ?? Love ur videos man
Start from the bottom up. Google search 2007 civic si serpentine belt, go under images, and there should be a diagram of how the belt goes on. Start from bottom up
What size bolt is the one in the very back of the tension pulley ??
J&P Squad either 10 or 12mm, I believe
Where can I find the manual?
You put the dust shield plates back on the wrong pulleys. That will cause issues.
Can you get away with just changing the belt or did you think changing the tensioner and idler pulley are necessary?
You could, but i would change it all just to be safe. If there is cracks/splits in your belt, change it. Tensioner will make noise when going bad.
Makes sense! Thanks.
Hey how are the parts holding up are they still on ur car? Thinking about ordering the same
Still holding up... Gates makes awesome products
@@TheGerbsteve thanks bro
is there any video about 2008 honda ex1.8 tensioner removal and installation?
Not too sure man. Try researching it on here and on google.
Hey so I'm not sure went out on mine but the car literally won't start. The last two weeks I was hearing whining noises coming from the idler tensioner pulley area. So I'm guessing it's those two... but my question is would the car start if those pulleys are shot? Because my alternator is good
The car should have started, even if the pulleys were on the way out. Mine were making a slight whining noise, but my car started. How is your serpentine belt looking?
Gerb Productions yeah mine were whining for 2-3 weeks and then while I was driving home the other day I'm guessing the shot through and the car turned off. The belt is a brownish color
That's weird man. Order new pulleys and a belt, start there. Hopefully it's not anything major
Gerb Productions yeah that's what I'm doing. And I hope not. Thanks for the help and the video man!
kb50cal Go on rock auto and get the gates kit... OEM is pretty expensive at the dealer. Let me know how everything goes. Thank you for the support!
where did you buy the tensioner pulley?
Rockauto
Oh yeah the brand new belt is indeed hard as hell to get on since it is not streched from tension oh man routing it to the bottom to the top oh mannn not gun good 20 min job.
I started from the bottom and worked my way up, found it easier that way.
can i just replace the tensioner pulley an not the whole bracket?
Yes you can just be careful and note that the bolt that holds the pulley on the tensioner has a nut behind it that is not fastened to anything it's sitting in a nut Alcove and it will fall out once you remove the bolt into the abyss where you could never find it when I put it back together I had to purchase a new nut and foil tape it to the back so it would stay until the job was done it worked out perfect
What does it mean by torquing it at 41 and 20 something?
Means how tight you want the bolt itself. That's how the hardware from the factory comes.
great video, what was the part number from rockauto for the tensioner pulley???
+Wall Barrantes 38028 by Gates. Their products are awesome!
+The GerberSteve you made that look so easy, everytime i try to do anything on my SI I swear i be having the hardest time
Hey man, I'm no mechanic, but I try my best haha. They're are pretty hard to work on due to the space. I'm doing a clutch job on it soon, that should be fun. What year is yours?
+The GerberSteve i feel you, i did the intake , suspension, spark plugs , exhaust was a pain in the butt butt i got it done, rotors and brakes , next on my list is radiator
+Wall Barrantes What intake? I was thinking about putting a cold air in. I'm definitely going to upgrade my suspension. Not sure if I'm going to do an exhaust, was thinking a 4-2-1 header with a high flowing cat. I need new brakes myself. Not sure on which ones I want to go with though.
great vid bro for real, anyway u can do a fuel filter or pump vid?
Thanks man.. I'm sure sometime in the future ;)
Same i need to change on of them these bitch are hard to get one of my.pullies is making loud noise idk wich one thanks.for video mine is for acura csx S but same cars helpps me a lot thanks from quebec
Glad i could help a homie out haha... Thanks for the support
Gerb Productions its repaired :D no more loud sound keep the video love from quebec :P
Happy it helped you bro... Anything else you need, lmk
Did mine earlier today. How the HELL did you get the bolt in the back there back in???
Pretty sure i put the bolt in a deep socket and threaded it back on
Gerb Productions you must've done it with the pulley off im assuming. I can't even access it with the complete assembly back on. So somehow you would have to hold that nut on the back of the pulley and shoot the bolt through
What's the torque spec for the pulley to the tensioner
The torque specs are 41 ft lbs for the idler pulley main 14mm bolt, and 16 ft lbs for the 12 mm bolts.
Gerb Productions is the torque spec 41 ft lb for the top idler pulley or idler pulley (tensioner)?
All the torque wrenches I'm finding have a 20 lbs and up could you let me know where I can get one that goes to a lower rating?
Do you have a the part number for the belt
I don’t bro, Ik it’s a kit on rock auto parts
how was the gates belt bro? i ordered the same from rock auto havent installed it yet
Great dude, I love it!
👌👌👌👍👍. Bro
My alternator bolt broke off in the block and the tensioner pulley snapped to 😭😭☠☠😫
Sorry to hear the crap news bro
3 hours later lol damn was hoping u would show how to put tha belt on
I should make a separate vid on installing serpentine belt
If bad, does the sounds like a winding noise
More like a slight grinding upon rotation. A winding noise will most likely be ac compressor
The compressor hasn’t work since I brought the car it probably the alternator it’s New the bearing is bad it’s a good thing I have a warranty on it
How is that belt holding up?
The gates belt is holding up pretty well man
Nice! Mine is due for a change.
Do it up man, you have the vid right here. Get a honda oem belt, they're like $20
I'm gonna get it done. You definitely have a very straight forward video here that I can use. Thanks man!
Appreciate it man... Thank you for the support!
Gerb after replacing the serpentine belt on my 07 si, i started to hear a wobble. the tensioner pulley can be slightly moved side to side like barely.
what can be the issue??
i didnt change the tension or idle pulley.
I would recommend changing those man. Order gates ones off of rock auto
Gerb Productions i dont think the pulleys go bad right just the bearing? im changing out the bearings next week and see if that changes anything.
Sti Wrx so what
What happened I changed my bearing today Nd it's locking up. everytme
I changed my bearings and im good to go. No more noise. You gotta make sure to get the oem one theyre like 10 bux a pop and not the ebay 10pack.
You may as well replace the whole pulley thats what ima do by the end of the year.
Less talky more worky
