I think that, since Super Mario Maker is likely intentional alliteration based on the main franchise, you should call the finished project Kirby's Dream Designer! I know that Dream Land isn't as pervasive as Super Mario is to Mario, but it's by far the most known Kirby series, so I think it'd work!
There's a game called Kirby Dream Maker which is pretty similar to this game. So using that name would be a little questionable. The game i mean is way smaller than this one btw
I personally love the Amazing Mirror art style that was used for a stretch of time in the GBA/DS era of Kirby. Though if you want a style that looks really unique, Dream Land 3 has a very distinct style compared to most of the other games in the series.
Please release it. There is so many new Mario fan games for the past 2 months none of them were taking down. So please release it. I would love to play it when you finish it.

Kirby's Dreamland 3 - Super Mario Bros. 3 Kirby's Amazing Mirror - Super Mario World Kirby's Return to Dreamland - New Super Mario Bros. U Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Super Mario 3D World Anyways, good luck with the project! :D

Dude, you CAN release it! Despite what Nintendo fans tell you, they're actually fine when it comes to fangames! The only ones they take down are ones that make money off their IP, do horrible things with their IP, or happen to be the same as something they're realising. As long as HAL isn't making a Kirby maker and you don't sell the game for money, you'll be fine.
exactly this, replying to bump this because there's generally a lotta misconception about nintendo and fangames (note, pokemon is a different beast), but what you've said absolutely always rings true
I hope Nintendo doesn't give any complications to your project, because it's getting really good, I really wanted to see it happen, the idea is amazing.
Omg I'm so happy you're bringing this back! I was trying to think of the core differences between kirby and mario, and I thought of one thing you should add. Kirby is more of a beat em up platformer than mario. As an editor, the player should be able to select an area to l9ck the screen, and once the player reaches that spot, it will trigger a multi stage boss battle. Maybe the player could have max 10 different triggers of spawning, so for instance the first stage I could place 4 waddle dees around, and they would spawn, and stay till kirby beats them all, then after that bronto burts could spawn in, and then end it all with a mid boss like bugzy. I hope that makes sense, I feel like that is a very core element of kirby games
I wish you the best of luck on this project. It looks awesome. I also have a suggestion for it. An event and layer system inspired by SMBX. Basically, every object, be it tile, enemy, a gizmo, etc., can have a layer assigned to them. Just having a layer assiged to an object won't change it in any way, but it will help with doing stuff with said object by using events. There's an event list where you can add events and put in what they do. They could reveal or hide layers, assign them a movement, change the music, hell, they could trigger other events with a delay decided by the creator of the level. Every object should have actions that can trigger said events. For example, enemies and star blocks could have a "destroyed" action. Maybe objects could have an action that activates once they come on screen. I think this feature would greatly increase the creativity the players can achieve. From something as simple as making a door or warp star appear after a boss is defeated to a level that keeps removing and adding objects in old areas when you move to the next one, making you feel uneasy seeing the part of the level that you went through be different once the level makes you backtrack. I understand if this would be too difficult to implement, but if you are up to the task, I'd love to see it done. If you didn't completely understand how the feature I described above works, you could try downloading Super Mario Bros X and playing around with the event editor in that game to get a better understanding of it.
Holy cow this project is so incredible, it’s so exciting to see this coming together! In terms of the buttons, maybe you could have arrows pointing up/down or left/right that you can click (or maybe click and drag)? A little more explicit than + and -, and maybe a bit more aesthetically pleasing, since it seems like that’s maybe your issue with the square buttons?
Maybe the level size could always be maxed out, players would use camera boundaries instead. Not camera tracks though, as the aspect ratio can change. Unless the level boundaries are practically infinite, a way to shift the entire level might be needed. Even as it is, I wonder how you will handle entity spawning, as with traditional logic, different aspect ratios would load entities at different distances.
i would love to see planet robobot or triple deluxe as a style since those are a lot more unique than the early kirby games, so it would offer more variety. also i feel like instead of kirby's dreamland as a seperate style you could merge it with kirby's adventure like how mario maker uses some costumes in the smb 1 theme. and in the place of kirby's dreamland you could do a game style similar to super star, squeak squad, or amazing mirror
I really hope this becomes a series! I love watching game dev videos. Kirby is my favorite. You should add either Kirby Squeak Squad or a more modern Kirby game like Kirby Star Allies if you want more of a challenge.
4:00 The game shown here is actually a fan game called Super Mario Maker: World Engine (you can tell because of the pixelated HUD elements). I bring this up because this fan game has been out for a while and has not been taken down by Nintendo. While I’m not saying you have to release your game, I please hope you do at lease consider it. You should look into auto tiling to help speed up level layout. You could also include a manual placement tool as well to allow designers to tweak what the auto tiling system creates.
@@daskampffredchen He could, I just think it is not efficient knowing that it would be a pain doing it for a lot of models (also trying to modify a 3D sprite would also be a pain)
I have the perfect idea for game style 3 So do Kirby nightmare in dreamland but add all the special gimmicks for us to play around with (but only one per level) and a massive selection of bosses for all the rest of the 2d Kirby games if possible but definitely all the final bosses and there ex/soul forms (pls daroach/dark daroach over dark nebula and adding he new attacks from smash bros for Marx )

i'm sure you could upload this somewhere as nintendo almost always only takes down fangames that have the same objective of something they are working on/have worked on, and i'm pretty sure they aren't making a kirby maker so you're totally safe

imo Adventure and DL1 have such similar styles that DL1 is just redundant. I’d like to see Nightmare in Dream Land/Amazing Mirror and DL3 as they don’t have much overlap. Edit: you should look at Mega Man Maker for inspiration, it’s the most similar thing to this project and has some really clean UI
Not as easy, but you can have the world size edit options only appear when the mouse is hovering over the darkened area and follow the same way it is now. That is if you do not want to see it following you around all the time, however the hovering checks might require a loop. You can always do a hover event on an invisible button the size of the grid screen, but depending on how c++ handles ui elements within this studio/libraries it might not allow buttons or elements below it to be selectable.
You should make the boundries work like the transform tool work in photoshop, for example, where there is a dot on each corner and "center" of the selection. There, you can drag to transform it, making it bigger or smaller Looking forward to watch the series! If Nintendo wasn't the way they are about fan games, this would be a really good game (should we call it a game?) for sure. As a developer, I think it's really functional just the way it is right now ngl
Hey bro! About others styles, I Recommand doing either Kirby dream land 3 or if you want a difficult one, then try kirby epic yarn (my favourite one). Anyways goodluck as always, you are the best! :)❤❤
I think you should include a lot more 2D games later on (more than one) and you can even add the mini games where you need to time your hit to break wooden targets. Or even a mini game maker!
This project turned out SO GOOD! Also, I think that, since Kirby super star is such an iconic game in the franchise, maybe make that the third game! Just a suggestion tho.
I was about to suggest Kirby and the Amazing Mirror as the third style, but then you showed blurred Super Star box art so I feel like the choice is already made lol For the level bounds, the way I'd do them is by making the bounds drag-able, like an image selection in photoshop or paint. Idk how hard that would be, but it'll let the player preview the size change before actually committing to it Excited to see the project finished!
What you could do, is basically Resource Packs, so you don't have to give out any Kirby Resources, then people can make the Resource Packs for the Levels.
You should make a tool that automatically places those background decoration pillars in a random pattern that fits how they're placed in the actual games. This would cut off a lot of time taken when editing. And see if you can do something like that but for clouds, too. For example, Super Mario maker already automatically places hills, clouds, bushes and trees for you. The backgrounds in Kirby's adventure are all super complex, so I can see it being a pain.
Kirby's Dreamland 3 is my favorite after Kirby's Adventure, and has a unique (but still relatively simple) art style. I think it'd work pretty well for this kind of project.
(haven't finished the vid yet but) split all the Nintendo IP assets into "resource packs" which people can download separately. Then you can only distribute the "engine" with a generic resource pack and people can download ass the Kirby IP stuff separately.
Kirby’s Dream Land 3 should be supported! Its art style is so unique, and you could have animal buddies in Dream Land (using DL2 sprites) and Dream Land 3!
release it as a very non-descript maker game with kirby elements, like some random ahh character with a vaccuum, and instead of waddle dees it's like bean people or something, then make texture pack support, and have a kirby texture pack? could be a way to release it
For the third game style, I suggest Kirby 64 Crystal Shards! It's one of my favorite Kirby games, and the way it could combine/fuse any pair of abilities was so fun!
You should make it work in a way that uses decompiled graphics from the select kirby games, so you can release it without any copyrighted material, and a guide on how to get the assets yourself.
I mean, as long as you don't directly monetize the project and Nintendo doesn’t decide to make a Kirby maker of their own, you should be safe from their wrath. Probably the best way to distribute it would be to host the download link in a Discord server or something. I'm excited to see where this goes. i personally would love to see Ksa mechanics implemented at one point as they would make for some real fun puzzle crafting
That’s true. People *severely* over-exaggerate how often Nintendo takes down fangames. Even all the examples CN showed were either monetized, direct remakes of existing games, or not even from Nintendo (e.g. the Pokemon Company). There’s a very specific logic to it that armchair lawyers like to ignore in order to craft their narrative
this would probably be pretty hard but maybe you could make a system that lets you drag and stretch out the level boundaries?? it would be a lot more convenient i think
Hey man, it’s thanksgiving over where I’m at in my country. Instead of eating some Turkey, I’m watching this new Codenoodles upload. I’d love for you to make a super Star theme for this game and to implement Fatty Whale 🤢
For a third graphic style I would say Super Star, being one of the most iconic games in the franchise, either that or Squeak Squad, which is similar to Amazing Mirror and Nightmare In Dreamland and thus could encompass all three
OMG I HAVE WANTED A SEQUEL TO THE LAST VIDEO! But also, let’s not forget that Nintendo has kept a lot of fan games up recently despite the circulating, I honestly think even if they DMCA you, it won’t matter. Am2r came back as fans kept it alive, and the game is still VERY obtainable Also my style ideas: If you can, Epic Yarn If not, then PLEASE do mass attack (they have big Kirby sprites for invincibly that make him normal compared to the enemies.)
I would suggest Dream Land 3 due to it already sharing a similar gameplay style to the other two but the game's art style is achieved by scaling down colored pencil drawings, and that could be complicated if you want to make new sprites so every style shares features like Mario Maker. The safest bet is Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land since it's a remake of Kirby's Adventure and the sprite style spans across three games of content to pull from.
I think that, since Super Mario Maker is likely intentional alliteration based on the main franchise, you should call the finished project Kirby's Dream Designer! I know that Dream Land isn't as pervasive as Super Mario is to Mario, but it's by far the most known Kirby series, so I think it'd work!

you should add superstar as a style!!
0:32 If you want a download, Dream Crafter (still) exists. It felt like the elephant in the room for the video.
Has Dream Crafter had any updates in the last 4 years?
Game's dead.
But yes, technically, it "still exists", albeit in a practically worthless state.
YESS
IVE WAITED YEARS FOR THIS
Kirby’s Dream Land 3 should be supported! Its art style is so unique, and you could have animal buddies in Dream Land (using DL2 sprites) and Dream Land 3!
Dream Land 3 would be a really cool style to have among these! Have one that’s a little bit unique compared to the others.
release it as a very non-descript maker game with kirby elements, like some random ahh character with a vaccuum, and instead of waddle dees it's like bean people or something, then make texture pack support, and have a kirby texture pack?
could be a way to release it
Kirby Squeak Squad could be a neat 3rd style. Keep up the good work!
It's literally almost the same as the GBA ones
does it have to be buttons? you could just have a stylized + and - to the side
For the third game style, I suggest Kirby 64 Crystal Shards! It's one of my favorite Kirby games, and the way it could combine/fuse any pair of abilities was so fun!
Kirby planet robot. No background teleporting needed though. It would be cool to see 3d textures.
You should make it work in a way that uses decompiled graphics from the select kirby games, so you can release it without any copyrighted material, and a guide on how to get the assets yourself.
the return of the king
I like the style and colors of Dream Land 3 (And music if you decide to implement changing themes). Please add a dreamland 3 style.
Nice i hope you get better at man keep going!
A little late, but I think Super Star Ultra is one of the most iconic styles of Kirby that's a must include!
It would be awesome to add kirby's epic yard as a style
this would probably be pretty hard but maybe you could make a system that lets you drag and stretch out the level boundaries?? it would be a lot more convenient i think
Add amazing mirror. It was so unique
kirby squeak squad looks good
KIRBYS DREAMLAND 2 PLEAAAAASE
also this is a sick project im really looking forward to the rest of whatever you're gonna do
Dream Land, Adventure... and either Dream Land 3 or Super Star? Both would be good early Kirby styles.
Hey man, it’s thanksgiving over where I’m at in my country. Instead of eating some Turkey, I’m watching this new Codenoodles upload. I’d love for you to make a super Star theme for this game and to implement Fatty Whale 🤢
add amazing mirror style
Instead of the +/- buttons, I would let the user drag on the edges of the room boundary to grow/shrink it
For a third graphic style I would say Super Star, being one of the most iconic games in the franchise, either that or Squeak Squad, which is similar to Amazing Mirror and Nightmare In Dreamland and thus could encompass all three
OMG I HAVE WANTED A SEQUEL TO THE LAST VIDEO! But also, let’s not forget that Nintendo has kept a lot of fan games up recently despite the circulating, I honestly think even if they DMCA you, it won’t matter. Am2r came back as fans kept it alive, and the game is still VERY obtainable
Also my style ideas:
If you can, Epic Yarn
If not, then PLEASE do mass attack (they have big Kirby sprites for invincibly that make him normal compared to the enemies.)
