Another interesting fact about this species conservation is that out of the original 18 caught 2 died and could not be bred from and at the time scientists froze these 2 and they are now trying to introduce the genes from these 2 that were frozen back into the wild gene pool through modern DNA scientific processes creating more diverse genetics in the species as you can imagine anything bred from 16 individuals is highly inbred and a has a minuscule genetic diversity
It's is a shame that this channel is anthropomorphising these animals, it looks similar to a disease common among mustelids here in the UK, where nematodes burrow in to the brain and cause encephalopathy which causes this kind of behaviour. Use to volunteer work at the Louisville (Ky) Zoo, they were part of the captive breeding program then (may still be, don't know), had a couple of them (NOT on display for fear of disease, Etc.). Once thought extinct in America a small colony of a dozen or more was found in a remote area out west, split up for fear of disease killing them all if put together. I've since heard that many re-introductions has happened (they are absolutely the cutest predator you'll ever see).
Finally found the identity of the animal that ran across our field, here in the NY mountains. No doubt about it = did the research ! There are lots of woodchucks here, and that's our 'prairie dog' ! This critter had been well fed and was in excellent shape. The title of the description was 'black footed ferrets', as you called it. Possible they like the taste of squirrels too !
I'd doubt that it was a Black Footed Ferret. The researchers/Biologists clearly stated that prairie dog is their sole diet, which is why they nearly went extinct. They don't even hunt rabbits like, the European Ferret does. Also it's nocturnal so when it hunts at night the Woodchucks & Squirrels would be asleep high up in the trees out of reach to a ferret whose natural habitat is flat grasslands not forested mountains.
I remember in the very early 1970's Don Fortenberry (SDGF&P) did an extensive study on these in south western South Dakota National Grasslands (badlands). They were almost thought to be extinct at that time.

My family has a hard time believing that my cute little ferrets are ferocious preditors in the wild. But ferrets know it lol. They have NO fear! They will chase my cats and my dogs like it's nothing. Granted they just curious and trying to play, but if they were hungry and needed to take a down a meal, they would have no trouble doing it! They have a toy pig that they love to "hunt." They will grab it and shake it viciously like a dog. When I try to take the pig from them, that's when I can feel the strength in their bite.

The most endangered animals have like 1-2 left. Black-footed ferret was never the most endangered. It used to be called "the most endangered mammal in North America" but that's not true anymore. The vaquita dolphin is more rare for example, it's going to go extinct any day now, might already be extinct. There's only a few left.
I have a few questions if anyone is knowledgeable. Once they go their own way, do Black Footed Ferrets know or remember their siblings & parents if they ever meet again? And are they inclined to inbreed? And lastly, are they prone to the kinds of issues your common pet ferret are ie, adrenal disease, insulinoma, deaf or blindness?
This isn't 100% but in terms of adrenal disease and insulinoma these are more prevalent in domestic ferrets due to what we do to them. Adrenal disease is thought to be connected with early neutering of domestic ferrets (with diet and genetics a contributing factor) while Insulinoma is linked to diet, specifically a diet which contains plant protein (it's recommend that a dry ferret food should have the first 5 ingredients as animal based for it to be considered a "good" food). As the BFF is intact and eats a natural diet they shouldn't be exposed to the same kind of risk that a domestic ferret can be exposed to.
I can’t believe they just killed off all those prairie dogs. They were such psychos back then. We can all coexist. As long as they don’t come in my house I won’t go in there’s and then I won’t have to hurt them. Mind your business and I’ll do the same. 😁🤙✌️🙏
What this video fails to mention is that all keystone species, like the prairie dog here, also have a specialized predator. The prairie dog is a rodent, it has a high breeding count, and a low infant mortality rate, so most, if not always all, of its young will grow to reproductive age and reproduce again. Ferrets on the other hand, were environmentally designed to keep prairie dog populations down because their other predators weren’t eating enough of them (I kid you not. Look at other rodent species or other high infant turnover rated animals. All of them can be eaten by more than a handful of predators, it’s how nature keeps balance). Unfortunately, due to evolution and natural selection, the black footed ferrets are specialized predators (there is not a single piece of evidence that supports retraining a specialized predator to eat something else. It just isn’t possible. Try training a panda to not eat bamboo, or a koala to not eat eucalyptus leaves from a tree branch).
I love ferrets & mustelids in general. Shocking mass slaughter of Prairie Dogs though , which caused the BFF's near exiction. Prairie Dogs are now proven to create their own ecosystems , so they too must be looked after
