WTF Happened to Vanilla Ice?

- Опубліковано 15 чер 2024
- Ice Ice Baby. Go Ninja Go Ninja Go. If there was a guy everywhere in 1990 and 1991, it was Vanilla Ice. A white rapper from Dallas, Texas - whose real name is Rob Van Winkle, the much-mocked but extremely popular rapper scored a multi-platinum debut with his album To The Extreme, which sold seven million copies and, at the time, was the fastest-selling hip-hop album of all time. His signature track, Ice Ice Baby, which sampled Queen’s Under Pressure, was the highest charting rap single ever, as was his cover of Play That Funky Music. Vanilla Ice was so popular among teens that he showed up as himself in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze, where he sang “Ninja Rap” (Go Ninja Go). But, just as quickly as he rose, Vanilla Ice fell, with his acting debut, Cool As Ice, widely mocked as one of the worst films of all time when it came out in 1991, just after his career had peaked. By the year’s end, he was a has-been. So, how does someone rise and fall so quickly? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into Vanilla Ice’s epic rise and fall, paying tribute to the fact that despite his short-lived fame, he stuck around much longer in the public consciousness than a lot of his contemporaries, thanks to his constant willingness to poke fun at himself, and his reputation for being a nice guy. So “stop, collaborate and listen” to this special episode, written by Brad Hamerly, and edited, produced and narrated by Taylor James Johnson.
Do you still crank up Ice Ice Baby when it plays on the radio? Let us know in the comments!

I don't care what anyone says vanilla ice wrote that song himself and sug robbed him
💯 it was a multiple shake down. Extortion
Say what you will about him. He was a great entertainer with so much energy. You can tell he put so much love and effort on his dances.
Dance..really..:)
Again.... He kinda got that from the Crip Walk moves. Idk if 😮you know it but, there were bloods and crips. Crips had this amazing moves that told a story or scrip a name, that looks like a dance. I think it's beautiful and Kendrick Lamar brought it back❤
For me both are beautiful to watch, but i do have a crush for the crip walk, it's beautiful 😊
@@nhokonhokopualanone of vanilla’s dances reference the crip walk 😂
You call that dancing???
It's called Cocaine lol
They really need to put Vanilla Ice on the next Fast and the Furious movie. He fits so well on that universe
I think this could be really cool, maybe Paul Walker’s buddy who got caught up with the wrong crowd as he went the right way with the law but the guy that truly introduced him to racing. With his motocross pass, maybe that is the direction they go. I would be happy to spin up a screenplay for it
He is a car guy so why not?
Hell yeah 💯 percent agree
Just saw him in concert a few weeks ago. He was awesome. Seems so down to earth.
You forgot to mention a minor detail: In 2019, Vanilla Ice made a comeback with his reality television show “The Vanilla Ice Project,” which aired on the DIY Network. The show follows Vanilla Ice as he renovates and flips houses in Florida. The show has been on the air for 11 seasons and has been well-received by audiences.
He did, it was in 2009….
The dude is immensely talented…. Maybe not every musical decision was the best, but he can dance is ass off
Dispite being in his 50's now he's actually aged pretty well.
The Ninja Rap is one of my biggest guilty pleasures
He's one cool dude. His flipping houses show was really good and enjoyable. Not insufferable like most others..
Every single day I think about Shug getting assaulted (multiple ways) in prison that he won't leave alive it makes me smile.
Right?! I agree whole heartedly! I LOVE this for him ❤
I heard he was still stocking shelves, "Go ninja, with Kraft Ninja Turtle macaroni and cheese and singing, "Go ninja, go ninja go ninja go."
Yeah he still raps go ninja go ninja with all the millions hes worth
Vanilla Ice was killing it back then and is still killing it today! Much love and respect to The Ice Man!
Dude sang at a Rays game one night...me and this girl I was bangin' at the time stayed after the game to watch him....i was totally blown away just how good his stuff was and how good he sounded live on stage...
A girl you were "bangin" ? Oh kayyy
Question: Why didn't Bowie & Queen just sue Suge Knight if he owned the rights to the song? =/
Because Vanilla Ice isn't some crazed psychopath who has survived multiple shootings and who is willing to run over people to prove a point.
Oh, and he did apparently dangle Ice over a hotel balcony by the ankles. I sure as hell wouldn't sue him either.
Great Point!!
I didn't know he that he used to open for NWA.... Vanilla Ice deserves so much respect. I owe him years of respect 😅
I didn't know that either
He opened for NWA because death row records...
@@nhokonhokopuala well I guess they made a offer he could not refund
i think they said he was the house opener at a club, so whoever played that night, he'd open for them. so not really opening for NWA, just that one time NWA played at the club he worked at, and then for Paula Abdul the one time she played etc.
@@perfectallycromulent "he'd open for them..." your words...
Still love his music and his movie.
I watched cool as ice on VHS as a kid a million times but I loved street bikes as a kid so that’s what I was watching it for but I still loved it as a 10-11 year old boy
Thank you JoBlo! Knowledge has been successfully received. Appreciate all the work you guys do!!
vanilla ice is just a cool guy
Back in 1998/99 my granny would take me to preschool and without fail would turn on Ice Ice Baby for me. I still know every word and still listen Vanilla Ice to this day😊❤
His work with the Bloodhound Gang made me respect his lyrical craft.
BG best band ever.
I sneak up on you like a sniper at your back door
Back then in 90's Germany this guy was like David Hasselhoff of Rap. He was our King.
Ran into that guy like three times he's a pretty chill dude. He lives here in Palm Beach county, Renovating homes for the rich and famous. More rich than famous.
That was probably the most interesting breakdown I've seen from JoBlo to date. As it turns out, I actually didn't know a lot of that stuff about Vanilla Ice! Genuinely fascinating 👍😎
He needs to make a Vanilla Ice movie with all of these in the movie acted out. I want to see a movie of his life now and career now.
That's some bullshit, VI was a great supporting actor in That's My Boy.
Go ninja go ninja go
In 2007 or so, my then-girlfriend's best friend was obsessed with VI, which was weird because she was only about 18 at the time and had missed his '90s heyday. He came to the tiny city of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and played in some little club and because she wasn't old enough to get into the club, she waited for him after the show so he could sign her VI doll. He apparently ended up giving her a ride home afterwards.
Wow... I always looked at him as a lulz 1 hit song.. But there are layers and layers...
... . I'm happy he is a happy Florida man ❤ 😂
90s, he was at his peak
Nothing gets by you does it?
99% of the time, I'm here for Taylor's writing and hilarious narration. He makes even the most mundane celebrities seem interesting!
Ehehehehehehehehehehe
Ikr? 😂
True, I would not have continued listening otherwise.
How many artists (past & present) would give a left but for the career this man has. It's easy to poke fun at V-Ice in retrospect but he's lived a life anyone would envy.
GO NINJA GO NINJA GO
I’m confused. If Vanilla has a hit reality show, why is he stealing heaters from an abandoned home? Do these show pay him? I’ve actually watched his show and he does a good job renovating homes. He really is good at collaborating with his team. They alway stop and listen…to him.
I see what you did there o7
Stealing from abandoned homes is the ultimate renovation DIY.
My wife hung out with him backstage after a concert. He seemed really cool amd down to earth.
What’s his dick taste like
I would want my wife alone with Mr Vanwinkle.
I love the parody of Jim Carrey doing Vanilla on In Living Color. Carrey does White White Baby. He says "kick it" and his sneaker goes flying off.
After Jim's portrayal of the Riddler, I question his right to make fun of anyone.
😂😂😂😂
He is my favorite Rapper
The cameo in the hurtful 8...ridiculous whatever, is HILARIOUS! He cracked me up in That my bot too.
19:51 Thank You Jon Lovits for finally making that scene funny...
Vanilla Ice is one of the classic one hit wonders, known primarily for one hit song. "Cool as Ice" is the epitome of "So Bad, It's Awesome."
I didn't know any of this...for me the dude' vanished into the vortex after 1998. and I got to admit: I'm JoBlown away by all his sidequests...quite impressive, especially his sportive achievements.
Word to your mother
😆
What does the even mean?
@@gonzoyork1908 Re-listen To Ice Ice Bay you.ll see
Cool as ice was so bad it was good. Cant believe you covered the OG
WTF happened to Matthew Fox? Haven’t seen him around since bone tomahawk.
I'm surprised there hasn't been a rapper called Vinegar Ice yet.
"Vi-niger" ice- that's why. People too soft and sensitive and would turn it into some racist bait bs.
Next to 2Pac one of the few rappers that were allowed into Madonnas Harem!
Iconic in itself. He was/is sooo good looking. I am surprised no fashion brand has used him for a campaign yet.
What happened to him he melted.
Hes one beautiful man.
A jack of all trades. A lesson to learn from Artists.
Those who weren't there, don't know lol
Say what you will about his music, but VI as a person has to be one of the coolest and kindest cats you’d ever have the pleasure of knowing. He’s given so much to charities and his community, to the point he was made “outstanding citizen of the year” by his residence of Southern Florida. He’s an absolute credit and truly a VIP of mankind. GO NINJA, GO! 😄
He seems like a pretty cool guy.
I love all of the puns that you put into this video well Played
Ninja rap is one of the greatest songs ever!!!
Poor effort not mentioning Vanilla Ice Goes Amish. It was such a great heartwarming show.
I've always wanted a crossover movie between Vanilla Ice and Snow
Hey Tyler please tell me what song starts playing at 3:55?
And the Vanilla Ice Project is coming back. They're now busy filming a new season.
Long time ago now, and it shows
Who else remembers that time he was signed to HatchetHouse under icp? I don’t think he ever recorded but he was going to or something?
What Happened? - Jim Carey destroyed his image on In Living Color and he could never recover. =p
True that
The sixth best JetSki are in the world. Oh my gosh a high I can’t imagine.
I had to come 🔙 and watch this in peace 😂.
Good looking guy. Nice jaw line. Tall. Wide shoulders. Texas. He was destined to be something. He walked so Riff Raff could run.
I’m surprised Vanilla Ice didn’t get sued for using the instrumental track to Under Pressure
They (Bowie and Queen) did sue - or at least started the law suit process. He ended up settling with them out of court before it could go to trial.
I’m surprised you’re commenting on a video you didn’t even watch.
@@MrTickleBean😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That's ice❄️☃️🥂🎄 merry Christmas
I met him once or twice he was pretty cool
A few thoughts and observations
To go from being so popular to supposedly unpopular, possibly wasn't entirely organic. Possibly more of a from the top down situation.
It wouldn't surprise me if the same MTV management that suppressed 80's pop metal and hard rock, also wanted rid of Vanilla Ice.
The musical powers that be in the early 90's, condemned us to a decade of grunge and monotone pop vocals.
Say and think what you want about Vanilla Ice. But I think as far as celebrities go, he's admirable. To go from the top to the bottom so quickly and for no good reason as far as I can tell.
MC Hammer and some other radio friendly rappers did just about the same things as Vanilla Ice but don't endure the animosity he does.
The man looks like he taking care of himself and seems relatively happy. Sadly, the same can't be said for a lot of other celebrities.
A question to the people who made this video. You seem to have nothing but condescension toward Vanilla Ice. You even seem upset that Adam Sandler didn't hate him.
If you dislike the man so much, why did you spend the time making this video?
Finally, I like Vanilla Ice. I have since the first time I heard Ice, Ice Baby. His old music is pleasantly nostalgic for me. Much like a lot of other 80"s and early 90s artists.
I even like his movie. It's not Citizen Kane but it's fine for what it is.
For me heavy d rip started all of this.
What is The Music At 19:13?
he is doing fine
Vanilla Ice has way more street cred than the blonde punk from Detroit, yet all the Stan's think he's "hard" 😅
Rollin' in my 5.0
I liked this vid until you called him a one hit wonder.
King Of the one hit Wonders. And even the movie glitter May more money than the movie cool as ice
Look like he's doing quite well!
It's been 30 years. Will I ever unlearn the lyrics to Ice Ice Baby? I can still sing it. I don't want to, but I can. Help?
vanilla ice had one chart topper hits of songs in the 90s ice baby go ninja go from tmn2 secret of the ooze soundtrack funny music rapper also vanilla ice has a voice role and likeness in crime boss rockay city crime action game on next generation consoles out this year
His hard metal was pretty good too.
He stopped, collaborated, and listened
Word to ya muthah
You never actually learn what the secret of the ooze is.
There are so many ice puns in this video Arnies Mr Freeze wants a word with you
That dude could dance and rap as good as anybody back in the day before he blew up and moved out .
So MTV expected the poor guy to happily destroy his own video? What a load of crap.
If it was played too excessively, MTV was the ones who did it, not Ice.
And they undoubtedly made a ton of money from commercials and cable subscriptions while doing it.
MTV managed to overplay dozens and dozens of other hits too and made their viewers tired of them.
Why pick on this one artist?
I wouldn't have signed &&&& !! Suge wouldn't have dropped ICE from that balcony,Suge bluffed ICE outta $ 4 million dollars.
He should told him to go to hell
@@andrewmorales5485 AGREED. ICE wasn't thinking straight,he was so scared. LOL. No way Suge would do it-MURDER-ONE-charges for him and his goons. And if Suge did hang ICE from 5/6 story balcony and threaten to drop him for not signing those papers. It's attempted murder charges or attempt to do bodily harm, plus extortion charges. I guess ICE was-TOO-young back then to know these things.
It’s funny because I always mix vanilla ice, ice T and ice cube up.
They all have one thing in common, none of them can act
0.26😂😂 I see what ya did there 😎
Dude, Vanilla Ice is still funky fresh
Still my dawg!! Mr Go Ninja Go!! My psychopathic intergalactic juggalo!! Big ups to ya Vanilla Bean Latte....lol
Vanilla Ice reminds me of Mega Man 2.
Suge knight needs to rot in prison. He got away with way too much crap.
RIP VanWinkle
What a life
When you say yes to everything..Soon no is left..!!
"What Happened To Vanilla Ice" ? That's a 30 something year old question that's been answered time over time. But to answer the ? Again....we all knew "Ice"..I don't think he wasn't 30 yet but he become a mainstream rap sensation, & he pulled it off swiftly. Some like to compare him to "MC Hammer". But what made "Ice" different was a Nordic Aryan looking white boy from Texas dancing, rapping , & talking like a black rapper from the inner city hood. I almost thought he was a brotha until the "Ice Ice Baby" video & blew my mind when I saw he was white. I can't lie I liked "Ice Ice Baby"...I dug the beat. "Ice" said during many interviews that he at first didn't want to do the mainstream thing. He wanted to keep it raw hip hop. But just like most mainstream rappers today he went along with it for profit. Ask "Ice" today if he like to hear "Ice Ice Baby" today....he usually cringe ! But he do understand that song is what make him a household name today. His 2nd album...guys let's be frank, it was trash juice in a clean cup with no ice.....I like Rob as Rob...he's one helluva guy & that's cool with me.....

Ice is a living legend. First rap global star ever
❤❤❤❤❤
Hung out with ICP for a while
I had no idea that he had a reality show that lasted 8 years.
He was so handsome.
Very true he’s gonna get mild but I saw this but I never do it right I guess and I answered yeah
He denied the suge knight story
