I was told by the sales rep that it was to help prevent screws from camming out. I have actually found it handy for unscrewing tight screws as it starts off slow to loosen the screws and then slowly speeds up. It is a handy way to help prevent screws from immediately snapping. Your co-worker could also be correct as it may be handy for multiple things.
