    What makes it even more frustrating is hearing Coach talk about how "simple" it is to line up 5 on 5 and open gaps when we watch the PSU Offense year after year line up 6 or even 7 blockers against only 4 or 5 guys in the box on D and the PSU RB still gets dropped behind the line while 2 OL and the TE stand there after whiffing and look absolutely perplexed about who was supposed to block the DE or climb to the LB.

    As painful as it was, I am especially appreciative of this Film Study. And I am super happy to see all this new engagement with the channel! For me, this breakdown solidified three "real-time" reactions I had watching the game. 1) Manny was overthinking EVERYTHING this game. WTF are we doing with two high safeties playing halfway to the end zone when Michigan is coming out in a friggin goalline-light set?? Even if they run PA, our personnel can recover and run with them. Just insane the "respect" we were showing McCarthy, long before he ever burnt us. 2) I was furious with the lack of gap integrity. I'm not sure I feel better learning that it was in part due to Michigan's play-calling prowess. But it was clear that was the problem more than "physicality." 3) Our LBs stink. Sometimes as a LB, you get outschemed and you have to win a block and make a play. You are a Penn State linebacker FFS, not the Center's dance partner. Fly up to the line of scrimmage and blow some shit up! I can't think of a single play made by either of our MLBs all day, and that can't happen against Michigan--period.

    What has been talked about over and over again since spring practice last year? The weakness of this team was going to be, and is, the front seven, especially the linebackers. They were right. This result was predictable. What we needed to do was to give them help, stack the box and make McCarthy try to beat us through the air. Instead, we gave them six- and seven-man boxes and dared them to run. I saw it on Michigan's first series. Of course they did. Thank you for pointing this out, Nick. Keep speaking the truth.

      The constant 3 and out on offense (because OL has been an issue since about the time of Saquon) and giving the ball back to a team with the lead just enables them to be patient and keep running the ball.

    • @niallk9336
      @niallk9336 2 роки тому +1

      This was the baffling part to me. In this era, most offenses will get their yardage and points - but the formula to stymie M' offense isn't a mystery. Force McCarthy to use his arm.
      He's not comfortable throwing more than 6yards down field. Crowd the box. Take away those slants and screens, and make them consistently beat you deep.
      They'll still score 20-30 points on a few big hits. But not gash you on the ground, control the game, and dominate.

    Great video. Very informative. The D kept the game close in the first half but was on the field way too long. Not sure I would put this loss entirely on the coaches. This is the best O-Line Michigan has had in a long time- there is a high likelihood every single one of the starters will go to the league. In every single one of those plays you just showed each guy did their job and executed very well- so they definitely deserve some credit for their performance. They are great at standing guys up, keeping them off balance, and creating those big seams for our two great RBs- it is an elite group. The left guard Keegan is an absolute beast of a human. Other problem in this game was PSU just didn't have the speed at LB to keep up with Corum or Edwards once they got into the second level- the awareness/speed just wasn't there the entire game. Also have to credit Corum and Edwards for this though- Corum has shitfiness and ability to change direction that few RBs wearing the maize and blue have ever had (the last who really had that bowling ball style was Mike Hart, his coach). Edwards' vision has improved a lot this year, and he has incredible speed- which if you get solid blocks up front has shown that he can be a a real problem for slower linebackers/DBs. I agree with your checker based assessment here with X's and O's, but the chess also mattered a lot on these plays.

    It's a good day when there's a FTB video.
    So what's most at fault for lack of gap control when Indiana managed to do much better? Players not understanding what Michigan liked to do out of formations? Lack of size and depth at DT and middle backer? Linebackers getting caught our position instead of following the ball?
    On the runs to the outside, Michigan consistently had two players lead blocking giving them numbers while our guys got caught in the wash. Why can't we do more of that? Our backs keep getting strung out wide looking for the hole or they come up short running straight ahead on third and short.

Those last few run plays you saw UMs center go right at the box LB. The LBs played like crap but at the same time whatever gap they took just seemed wrong. And this is more than anything WHY McCarthy makes them insufferable to play against. He's the last straw against teams that could otherwise defend them. All michigan has to do is sprinkle in the RPO and teams can't just commit inside the box, and if they do he will just sling it outside for a run control wide reciever 10 yard or more gain based on the fit Penn state takes. Not to mention if he does drop back to pass there's a good chance if nothing opens he can get the first down with his feet.

      Ohio State made a conscious effort to upgrade their defense after last year's debacle in Ann Arbor, so I seriously doubt Corum and Edwards are going to run wild. In that case we better damn well have confidence in our passing attack and can throw the ball successfully. Ohio State can. The jury is still out on Michigan, and the Ohio State game is not the time to find out.

But if the goal is win the Big Ten and eventually a national championship all roads go through Ohio State, then Alabama, Georgia and what looks like a resurgent Tennessee. That's a lot of football jargon. Michigan is great at pulling guys out of the O-line to the point of attack, and walling off the D-line so that defenders can't follow the pulling linemen. Running backs then get to the second level most of the time for a 5 or 7 yard gain, and oftentimes get to the third level where if the RB can juke a safety or CB, its off to the races. Corum is fast, but not faster than a typical CB. Edwards will run away from every CB in the nation, but is not as shifty as Corum. Plus Corum is short, powerful, nearly as shifty as Barry Sanders, and runs close to the ground. It's a potent formula for success in the running game. If anything, the Penn State D seemed trained to hold their ground rather than pursue pulling linemen, or just not strong enough to fight through those walls and meet the RB and his convoy of blockers at the line of scrimmage. Despite fans' criticism of the lack of a deep passing game, the highly efficient underneath passing attack is a great way to hold the LBs in place for the second it takes to break a nice run.

      1) Winning against lesser teams requires minimal coaching, especially when your talent level is significantly higher. You don't (nor should you) get kudos for beating a MAC team.
      2) Unless Manny Diaz is unaware that o-lineman don't just block straight ahead (and I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he's very familiar with this concept), how was that not worked into the game plan? It's not a new wrinkle for any team that runs the ball. Look at the game again, the defense was out of position all day. That's coaching and discipline.
      Look at PSU's record of playing top 20 teams since the current head coach took over. You knew this was going to be a loss 4 weeks ago. Further, PSU's record of playing after a bye week or after a loss is not good. Minnesota has "L" written all over it, and OSU is a definite loss. This video was full of excuses about why Penn State lost. You were completely dominated on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Blown out so bad that even the inflated score didn't reflect how bad of a beatdown it was. Penn State didn't lose the game, Michigan won the game, players won their matchups. Stop making excuses and just own it. It wasn't just coaching, these run plays were nothing new. Michigan blockers hit their guys with centers and guards that when pulled were fast enough to get edge blocks which is very difficult for guys that size to do. This was consistent down after down. It wasn't about the defense missing the gaps and assignments, this was about the O line dominating the line of scrimmage creating gaps and forcing their will on the defense. When a team dominates the line of scrimmage that hard coaching does play a role but it's more about the execution from the talent on the field. Penn State has always over hyped their talent. A team that's always been on the outside looking in. Trying to somehow make yourself relevant in the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry. Stop trying. Even through all the recent years that Michigan has constantly been blown out by OSU Penn State still has not been able to force their way into that conversation. Your excuses are tiresome.
