WELCOME TO SEASON 5 OF FTB FILM STUDY WITH COACH NICK CODUTTI!
On a star-studded defense littered with NFL Draft picks, Penn State safety Kevin Winston Jr. might have been the brightest of the bunch last season. As a true sophomore 'KJ' topped the Nittany Lions with 61 total tackles without missing a single ballcarrier. As a pass defender, Winston forced an incompletion on 20 percent of targets -- again, first among Nittany Lion defenders.
Coach Codutti puts Penn State's 2024 Bednarik Award watchlist candidate under the microscope to showcase all the fine details that collectively make him the best safety in college football.
Penn State fans: Be sure to like, subscribe and comment below! NEW FTB FILM STUDY VIDS post weekly and will run through the end of the season!

    Beau has a blend of speed, strength, ultra-quick change of direction, and football IQ not found in a lot of players. Couple that with Coach AK's penchant for combining formations, motion, and combination blocks and it has a lot of potential for loosening up a defense.

    I think Winston compares favorably to Brisker. Winstons a little taller but both were very aggressive safeties attacking the run and pass. For some reason seems like Brisker made more splash plays but Winston might be slightly better. I also heard a comp of Winston to Sean Taylor I thought was good.

    • @ForTheBlogy
      @ForTheBlogy 7 днів тому

      I think a lot of Brisker's TFL opportunities in 2021 had a lot to do with needed run support after PJ went down. But, yes, Winston's ability to make game-changing plays on the ball will be the difference in whether he goes 1st Round or 2-3rd Round in the NFL Draft. Because athletically, he's gonna test off the charts.

    Beautifully simple. Love it. Curious if you think Singleton will struggle with this? He is so downhill and struggled a lot with IZ. Seems like AK's wide zone has a little less hesitation and more "run to open space" to it? Allen will thrive, but we really need NS's game-breaking ability to keep people from stacking the box. One other thing: for this to be effective, it seems to me that Allar has to be WAY better at executing and completing play fakes. He has been pretty sloppy in that area, in my opinion.

    • @ForTheBlogy
      @ForTheBlogy 22 дні тому

      We plan to dig more into this, because it felt like defenses last year had a hard time adjusting to when Pribula entered for Allar...hence why Penn State was so good at covering spreads late in the 4th Q in 2023 (WVU, NW, ILL). It's a total change of pace when Pribula enters because now defenses have to honor him as a run threat.

  • @AmericanRevanchism
    @AmericanRevanchism 22 дні тому

    I hope he has Pribula throw at least 33% of the time he's in the game. Last year, it seemed like a pass 10% of the time and run 90% of the time. 1. Keep defenses honest. 2. Pribula is a good QB. His high school tape looked like he was pretty accurate to all areas of the field.

    • @AmericanRevanchism
      @AmericanRevanchism 13 днів тому

      @@sujisingh5855 But do we have any evidence that he's not a good enough passer? Small sample size, but he had a 174 passer rating last year (40 points better than Allar). Again, very small sample size. But I haven't seen anything that would suggest he's a big drop-off from Allar (and I think Allar was a little underrated last year). Pribula has good high school tape and good small sample size college tape. I understand "we don't know", but I don't think there's evidence to suggest "we already know and he's bad".

      @@stretch141000 eh Drew has the arm. From the little data we have, I don’t think Beau has quite the zip. Or height. Allar mentioned that he was a fullback I believe before a QB. The kid can run. The problem is that you can’t just have Allar throw and just have Beau run it. Then it’s obvious what is going to happen. Same shit we did with like Tommy Stevens in years past. The reason that McSorely was so damn good was that he could sling it and also run it. His only downside was his height, unfortunately. We need someone to do both (but primarily sling it).

      @@RenegadeT1TO i agree that you can't have both in at the same time. I just think given that the WR's are very questionable, i think PSU should lean on run first with Beau and the two star backs/great O line. Sure he may not be able to sling it like Mcsorley, but he's faster than Mcsorley. I just think given what we have its the better option, but we do have to recruit guys who can do both! Drew may have a better arm than Beau but we arent going to be able to have open guys downfield anyways so Beau's arm is more than enough for our capabilities.

      @@stretch141000 that’s fair. But I won’t act like I know better than the coaches when it comes to evaluating the players. There are likely other reasons to not start Beau. Scheme, planning, etc. But I also think that Penn State has to break this pocket passer curse. No Qb wants to just run the ball. And no WR just wants to run routes and block. There are many reasons to do one over the other.

    The WR crack with H-back coming around looks basically like pin and pull. Love it when OCs creatively recycle proven schemes to match personnel.

    Do you anticipate any or many 2 QBs on the field at the same time plays like Kotelnicki ran at Kansas?

      Probably...but hopefully it involves Allar more than just a space-taking decoy. We saw a few 2 QB sets last year (Ole Miss play in this video, for example) but in most, if not all, Allar was just "there" -- making it 10 on 11. Either involve him or sub him out.

      @@ForTheBlogy the 2 QB stuff they did when Daniels was healthy last year was provocative. I think if we see it, it will be true 2 QB offense not just putting drew at WR on the sideline
