- Did Makita really make a difference with their new XGT line of 40-volt tools? We test the new GPH01 40V Hammer Drill Driver to find out. This 1/2" hammer drill not only gets the 40-volt and larger brushless motor upgrade, but they also stuffed in 62 different digital clutch settings. Makita also gave it an anti-kickback feature to save your hands and wrists from the drill twisting under power. You can get the GPH01 in a combo with the GDT01 40-volt impact driver, 2x 2.5Ah 40-volt batteries, and the charger for $449. Makita includes a 3-year warranty with these new XGT 40V tools.

Makita 40V is winning us over more and more every day. Great video Tim, good info
bruhhhh my xdt16 is so fun ITS A MONSTER!
what about the hammer feature ??
I love my 40v tools, impressive power and have never let me down even leaving them out in the rain over night by accident
Fabulous video. Really showed off all the features really well. Thank you.
My friend, I had to pause e only halfway through the video....this tool kicks butt. I need one. Thankyou for posting
Got my 40v hammer drill and impact driver kit. And the 7 1/4 rear handle kit. Loving them especially the hammer drill driver love the electronic clutch on it.
YES 40V MAKITA REVIEWS!!! YYYYYYYYYEEEEESSSSSSSS!!! I LOVE YOU!
Glad we could help. Thanks for watching.
its way quieter, its way faster in the faster speed than an impact. the precision of the digital clutch really brings the drill back into relevancy. For delicate stuff I really love a hydraulic impact.
Wow... that looks supreme!!!
Thank you sir.
Awesome review!
Glad you enjoyed it and as always, thanks for watching.
Awesome video.
Thanks for watching.
I have this and the XPH14 at hand right now, and I have to say I'm not impressed with this 40V.
1. The electronic clutch is a disgrace. There is significant lag and inconsistency in its activation, and it will often deliver full torque for about half a second to the fastener before shutting off. This is as good as not having a clutch at all.
2. It blows noticeably less air out the chassis than the 18v.
3. The battery seems to get warm a lot faster from the same load.
You forgot to demo the music on the charger! Thanks for the review Tim - I missed that it switched from 41 to 21 settings in gears 1 and 2 when I tested it out.
2.5aH battery @ 36V (nominal, 40V Max) and 5aH @ 18V are both 90 Wh so you get more out of the small 40V than you'd expect!
40V MASTER RACE!!!
We did actually record the tune, but we just couldn't bring it to ourselves to include it in the video. lol.
Correct, and with higher voltage you get a little more efficiency as well. I just don't know that any of it really pushes someone over the line to switch from 18v to 40v. There is a place for it, but it's tough to have 2 complete platforms.
@@Shoptoolreviews Agree - I think they're targeting contractors that want to ditch their corded or gas small equipment like large breaker hammers etc. in favor of the 80V stuff, but they're including tools like this so they can migrate entirely from 18V and not need to maintain both.
You've got it all wrong. The 40V platform is a gift from GOD to replace all other inferior platforms.
@@Damitsall LOL
I just exchanged my hammer drill for a replacement because it was making a loud clanking/grinding noise when you let off the trigger. This is not the normal brake clutch sound you would expect, this is extremely loud and also vibrates the whole tool. What I find odd is that the replacement drill is doing the same exact thing - is this just normal behavior for this model?
If you used one of the higher capacity batteries with the 2- 9/16" speed bore it'll probably have no issue on speed 2
Man, i'm about drop 1k on Makita 40v tools. Damn i need stop watch tools review.
Don't let me be the catalyst of your addiction. lol. Thanks for watching.
Can you test the Bosch GDS18V-221N 1/2" impact wrench? Thanks
Working on it. Thanks for watching.
Could it not be the AFT shutting the drill down in speed 2?
indeed, he would have sprained his wrist otherwise. It's kinda painful to watch the bit dig in the wood without care.
what was that sound at the end of that screw at 15:16, for a second sounded alot like a mechanical clutch..
Likely, his wrist let up, and the electronic clutch engaged the motor again while he was limp wristing it. 😂
The drill also spins faster and faster from mode 1 to 16 or so.
wait! Must have a usb to correct the firmware! (ok, jk, being a nerd). Cool video on the different modes
That's funny. Thanks for watching.
I'd be interested to see how much torque it actually puts out in the lowest clutch setting. Generally speaking electronic drill clutches are garbage but this one seems like it might have some promise to it. Also be interested in what kind of charge times for those batteries.
Now, half a year later, i went for the new cheaper XGT drill driver with 21 manual clutch settings, much more accurate at low settings. Also, its smaller and lighter, easier to use for delicate work. I also got the big hammer driller tested in this video so i am covered for high power applications as well.
For delicate stuff I really prefer a hydraulic 12v impact from the red team.
I just tried it. This one is garbage too.
Like the technology but most expensive on the market. For me I use Milwaukee and want to go into Makita as my second choice but some of it is redundant and in my view the need to buy batteries for 2 lines. The batteries are just extra costs. I think Makita and Milwaukee are neck in neck with regards to quality depending on the tool but the price on this one is just a bit high. Way higher than even Milwaukee which isn’t cheap.
Does Makita have a 40v metal cutting circular saw?
Not that I know of, yet. Thanks for watching.
Yes they do. But you would have to buy it on Ebay most likely as is not avail in US yet.
It's a powerful tool 👍
Yes, it is. Thanks for watching.
@@Shoptoolreviews yeah man you reminded me of that automatic cutoff. Mine kept doing it and I thought I was using it wrong. Next time I'll read the manual
Not a fan of that digital clutch. Its just more you have to fiddle with. Mechanical clutches work fine they are reliable and they are quick.
I thought the same thing, then I bought it and changed my mind.
3 speed Makita hammer drill driver
Price in Pakistan
I use this drill 4 months it was already under repair because the 25 mm bosch drill for wood stopped and the engine kept working, makita replaced the gear box, now 3 weeks after receiving it from the repair it starts to happen again but only when it warms up I return it to the seller, impossible work like that.
How much money was for that kit
$449 for the GT200D drill+impact
@@PhillyFixed ok thanks you
Correct, as Philly mentioned: $449 for the kit with the impact driver. Thanks for watching.
I don't know man. 40volt battery means bigger batteries and less capacity compared to the 18volt stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong but this as a 40volt still doesn't have much more power then the 18volt stuff especially compared to milwaukee.
40v 4ah is equivalent to 18v 8ah. Same capacity, more efficient.
Higher voltage is more efficient. A 220/240V fan motor is more efficient (makes power easier) than the equivalent fan motor at 110/120V. Now, at the same time, the 40V vs 18/20V is at a much smaller scale, but the same principle resides.
Yes, the 40V has the potential to deliver more power and capacity; however, that doesn't mean it's applicable in every scenario. If you can get your jobs done at a sufficient pace with 18V batteries, then I would worry about switching to a new platform. There's a lot of cool features on this new 40V drill, but it's not going to change your life. Thanks for watching.
Amp x volt = watts
4ah@40v is the same wattage as 8ah@20v
With higher voltage you loose less power to heat etc which makes higher voltage more efficient
TLDR, the big advantages of higher volt is more efficient so more usable capacity and being able to push tools harder (more wattage) without heating up the tool AND battery as much as with lower voltage .
Power is nothing without the control
This is very true. Thanks for watching.

LOL, Next time you show the screen - show the screen
Will do. Thanks for watching.
Great review like always, thx... But not really impressed by this drill. There's better 18v drills on the market and less expensive, Dewalt, Milwaukee just too name a few.
no, the Makita wins over the Milwaukee but not on the dewalt on power. But feeling and trigger reaction is way better on the makita where Dewalt and Milwaukee are more dull
Nah this is now the best drill on the market
@@AM-wi6zo actually the new Bosch 18V GSR or GSB 150C is the right now at least strongest drill on the market with some special features
@@Zozo806 the gsr is a compact drill. I highly doubt that the gsd is stronger than the xgt makita. An what feature would that drill have that this doesn’t?
I thumbs down because of your shirt.
What's wrong with my shirt? Is it wrinkled or something? Thanks for watching.
@@Shoptoolreviews I didn't actually thumbs down. Let's join forces and find the scoundrel who did. I suspect PhilyFixed.
this is a 20 minutes review with so little action..
i think you need much more action and actually testing for a review videos .
