      Considering Makita has an impact driver fetish like nobody's business, and they release new models at ridiculous rates, they should be dominating these competitions, especially their 40v model. It's embarrassing that they can't even knock off the DeWalt 887, which has been out for around half a decade.

    The issues I have with these 40v max tools is that they nerfed features on their LXT to "justify" the step up. The new 18v hammer drill could easily have the anti-kickback feature present in the XGT version; no excuses whatsoever. Bosch, Kobalt, Flex, and the M18 Fuel Gen 3 One-Key have it; in fact Bosch has had it in their 18v lineup for a good 4 years plus with their smaller drills.

    As far as I read and heard from Makita representatives around the world, most of them say they don't want to release any battery above 6ah because they would be too bulky and uncomfortable. Found one Russian rep saying that it is impossible because of the size limitation, especially for their 2x18V line. So the second makes more sense, hence they might not release anything with 21700 cells for their LXT. The XGT uses 21700 cells only in the 4ah. The 2ah, 2.5ah and 5ah use 18650, but some tests show that 2.5ah performs better than 4ah. Tools & Stuff has a video about that.

    • @PhillyFixed
      @PhillyFixed  3 роки тому

      Their marketing materials don't show a 2.0 for the XGT (at least in the US). And you're right about the 2x18V tools, I know wider batteries wouldn't fit on my XSH01 saw, hadn't thought of that at first. Thanks for watching!

  • @RiffleStatus

    The reason for the different LEDs on the 40 volt line is because you have more control. On the 18-volt line you can either select one through four on power mode or you can select from the specialty modes but you cannot control both at the same time the 40 volt line will let you control both at the same time you can put it into driver mode and select the power of that drive mode you can also select a self-tapper mode and select the power of that self-tapper mode where on the 18-volt line if you enter self-tapping mode it is what the onboard controller says it is there is no adjustment the minute you hit one of the power LEDs now you have just switched back to the power mode you won't get that soft start anymore or the automatic stop when the computer senses load

    Well done Jim! Detailed info on the features of these complex tools. I think the ‘bolt modes’ are designed more with the mechanic or metal worker in mind? Not faulting your testing, just my insight and what I have heard from others in the know. And I had to chuckle at what you said @ 16:24; I have gone round and round with Makita Factory Techs, and It ain’t gonna happen, sad to say. I’ve heard almost every excuse and lame reason why they can’t, or won’t. I DO know there ain’t no way 21700 celled batteries would work in either of my circ saws. I have the rear handle 36 volt, and the sidewinder. Makita would have a whole mess on their hands, but I think they could have made an 18650 celled battery in the 8.0/9.0 Ah range. Tools like grinders, blowers, chainsaws would have benefitted from much greater runtimes. * rant over! * Stay safe and Healthy and keep your eyes on Heaven! 👍👍👍👍😁🙏✌🏻🇺🇸

      Hey George - yup those bolt modes aren't for wood applications, I just don't have a great way to test bolt stuff yet. I have it in the works, though! And I didn't think of the 36V stuff, they definitely wouldn't fit because those two batteries have no space in between...

    The one tool in the 40v line I wish would be released in the 18v line is a sidewinder 7 1/4 saw with the blade on the right side of the motor. I own the Hitachi (Metabo HPT) 6 1/2 18v and an original 2005 Makita BSS610 6 1/2, but still resort to using my Porter Cable 347 corded saw when I need a 7 1/4.

    I watched the video you did comparing these 36 volt tools with the 18 volt tools, and they didn't seem to outperform them. It seems like makita is playing a number game. If they want more power I think they'll need a bigger motor to utilize the 36 volts. It seems as though they're using the same motor for both platforms.

      It's entirely possible they're the same internals. Like I said, these aren't really the main focus of the 40V line, it's more to provide a complete solution on the platform so people don't necessarily need a mix of LXT and XGT to cover all their tools. I really like the drill, though, and I'm editing the hammer drill video now!

      Imo Makita has never been about outperforming the competition in power. They focus on engendering, quality, comfort, technology and outperforming the competition in longevity. Imo they don’t want to be the most powerful tool that will breakdown faster, but they want to be the most reliable. Imo Makita is in the sweet spot and now they have two lines that can expand for everyone from the professional to the DIY.

    If Makita was targeting the high-end heavy contractors then they would have started launching heavy equipment products. Instead they choose to repeat the products in the LXT lineup. This reflects something which is XGT is the long race horse. And Makita expects to sooner or later transition of existing customers to XGT line up. Which will happen eventually in the longer run, until then they want to make existing customers feel that they are not abandoned.
    This has been a common practice in the industry. Take recent change in camera for example. Canon, Nikon, Sony everyone moved to Mirrorless and all big brands said they will not abandon their existing DSLR customers. But all R&D went into New line up lenses and equipment replacing existing ones.
    DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita all big shots realize its time to upgrade and are coming up with their solutions. So sooner one accepts the better. The only constant is change.

    • @PhillyFixed
      @PhillyFixed  3 роки тому +2

      I agree, I think ultimately Makita will sunset the LXT line. For now, though, they want to move contractors over, so to go along with the heavy demo and rotary hammers, they released the rest of the typical tools so that contractors didn't have to maintain 2 lines on the jobsite.

    • @akaredcrossbow

      I think Makita is looking into the future. Milwaukee is doing it with MX Fuel while keeping their 18v line and the two aren’t compatible. Dewalt has already done it with FlexVolt and they should be good for the future. Makita is thinking of the future with 40v/80v. Makita eventually in the far future may or may not discontinue their LXT 18v line. Makita is treating the 40v Max/80v Max line just like their 18v/36v line. 18v tool one battery, 36v tool two batteries, 40v tool one battery, 80v tool two batteries. Makita is just doing what they’ve done for years and it’s worked very well for them. Makita has to sell similar 40v tools like the 18v tools to get more people into the 40v platform. With me so far right now I have no use for the Milwaukee MX Fuel line, but I might in the future. With the Makita 40v/80v platform I have a use for common tools like a drill, hammer drill, SDS, impact driver, reciprocating saw so I invest in the platform and in the future I might need the 80v tools and I will already have batteries for these tools, I wouldn’t have to buy specific batteries like I would have to for Milwaukee MX Fuel.

    • @jstratt21
      @jstratt21 3 роки тому +2

      @@akaredcrossbow yeah I agree that makita having an 80v X2 line is good, possibly even better than milwaukee, but I think the X2 battery thing is more of a workaround.
      They could've just kept everything 80v tbh and used flat cell batteries 4x5 for a compact 80v battery for small stuff like the impact and drills, that way you could keep everything compatible. Or do the same thing except with 40/80 multivolt
      I own lots of 36v x2 tools, but if you're redesigning a whole platform you should just go to the voltage you want
