R1R2 Link Makes Testing for Continuity of the CPC Faster and Easier Especially Whilst Training

  • The R1R2 link will make carrying out the continuity of CPC test faster, easier and will reduce the number of times the line conductors needs removing for a circuit breaker (MCB). Over my years of teaching apprentice electricians I have changed the way in which I link the line to the CPC during dead testing. I started out disconnecting the line conductor and using a crocodile link to connect it to the earth bar then changed to screwing the disconnected line conductor into the earth bar. However this R1R2 link means you can leave the line conductor connected to the MCB and link to the earth bar saving you time and potential damage to the screw of the MCB. In my experience this link would work very well in a training center or FE college reducing the number of times a line conductor would need disconnecting from an MCB.
    Please Note - this training rig and is NOT connected to an AC supply. I have many video on my channel talking about and covering safe isolation.

    Long overdue especially at college! Will save all the screws getting chewed up on the breakers!
    I’d be intrigued to see a comparison on the rig between each method, link, earth bar and that new lead to see if the magnet connection causes higher resistance than a screw connection or a croc clip.

    Been using this for a while, it’s great on EICRS, I’ve got two for being able to test multiple radials close to each other to save having to go back to the board the whole time, for example a boiler and immersion next to each other or both lighting circuits etc.
    Totally understand the college environment not wanting to remove and damage the screws I remember all the gear we had was battered fo that reason

    Great content as usual, been watching your channel for over a couple of years and have learnt much. Off topic but hopefully something you will cover soon. I did a recognised domestic installer course 2 years ago, called up the Niceic (as they recognised this course) to find out that they no longer recognised this path. So I’ve been doing electrical work over the last 21 months to be told I’ll need to go back to square one! It doesn’t make sense to Chuck so many people under the bus, the barrier to being CPS is the NICEIC, why don’t they make the. Assessment more difficult? Maybe a special assessment for the thousands that left their old careers to join the industry. You’re well respected and known, is there anything in the pipeline for guys in our position?

      There’s no logic, if I was crap I’m still going to be crap, just not able to instal in a special location(jeez if it needs an rcd fit one) install a new circuit (easy) fuse board, pretty easy. More people can still come into the industry and do minor works. I was aiming to be on the domestic installer scheme, I was doing it in the correct manor and getting the full 2 years experience before booking the assessment ( it’s well known the NICEIC didn’t check) I just don’t get it!! They’ve wasted 2 yrs of my life. I was never going to do commercial, why not just make the assessment more thorough. It’s going to be a nightmare to go back to square one. I thought this would be a good salient point for this channel to get into.

      Thanks for suggesting the method. If the cpc also connects to parallel earth paths - that would lessen the loop resistance.
      In a two fault scenario, the designed earth circuit pathway could be broken some way towards the distribution board whilst being in fortuitous contact with parallel earth paths nearer the load.

    • @highgatehandyman6479
      @highgatehandyman6479 2 роки тому

      No. The test current takes the pathof lest resistance/ making the smallest circuit possible so the test current turns back at the MET along the link directly into the Brown wire. ( the electrons t dont go off to earth and all the house's earth bonding and back. ) it takes the easiest / shortest route to make a circuit
      I think

    • @dead.format
      @dead.format 4 місяці тому +1

      @@highgatehandyman6479 The issue however is that the main CPC for the circuit could be missing altogether - if there's a parallel path then this will then potentially show the circuit as having a CPC - when it doesn't. Disconnect the CPC and test properly all day long.

    The insertion contact resistance of the driver head to screw is an unknown and immeasurable value in these circumstances and WILL have an effect on accuracy. Surely it's not impossible to design an insulating clamp that fits over the breaker top to bottom (or front to back) to clamp the contact to the screw rather than relying on a magnetic contact? What if the screws are nickel plated brass? Nice idea that needs more thought and design input, PLUS an analysis to measure actual contact resistance & effects (if any).

    • @jeremykemp3782
      @jeremykemp3782 2 роки тому

      Yes, there will be an unknown negligible resistance value between the two points you have pointed out. But this is not about accuracy, it's about knowing that the readings are in the right area to trip the overcurrent devices if need be, and there is continuity there. If the figures were way out, then you can investigate further.

    I agree with Steve Whiting there’s no point in you doing an R1 R2 test this way !!! the whole point of it is making sure you have the Earth to and the live on that particular circuit …if you do a link to the Earth bar there are multiple earths on there , also earth bonding cables so you would be getting a parallel earth path ,From multiple CPC ‘s, your test would have a major flaw when testing upstairs and downstairs lighting circuits there would probably be a point where the both of the two circuits would be joined at say a light switch then you wouldn’t know which Earth was your circuit
