Last year I visited her majesty the Queen's final resting place at St. George's Chapel in Windsor all the way from Australia. I had no idea King Henry the 8th was also burried there and that his grave marker was very unassuming. It sort of felt like some kind of small justice to me.

If it makes you feel better Henry's body was treated with the utmost disrespect Including exploding, dogs, stealing the Sarcophagus meant for Cardinal Wolsey from Henry and burying someone altogether different in it in the 1800s which is now located in St Paul's Cathedral. Of course as you said Henry is buried in St George where they tossed Charles I in with him and Jane Seymour. One of Queen Annes stillborns was in there with him as well.

Every time I revisit Henry and his wives, particularly Catharine, I wonder how did she not go absolutely insane with the loss of child after child? I once went to an old cemetery in Kentucky where my mother's family had been interred for almost two hundred years and saw all the graves of mothers and babies. Men back then buried wife after wife, replacing their wives as they died, often in childbirth. The babies and little children made up a horrific percentage of those old graves. I wondered then how those parents bore it...I guess it's only in modern times when we are shocked by the deaths of babies and children. Back then it was "normal".

In Howarth where the Brontë sisters lived one woman lost NINETEEN children post-birth, and they must've lived for at least a little while as they're buried in consecrated ground. There's no report of her miscarrying any - although it's probable - but it sort of puts Katherine of Aragon's losses into perspective doesn't it?

The chances of her being 'virgo intacta' when she faced the court are some integer of zero.
Firstly it would've been strange for her to have NOT had sex with Arthur as the then age of consent was lower.
In part that was because life expectancy was lower - ESPECIALLY for women due to pregnancy and childbirth (it's thought Margaret mother of Henry VII may have been as young as 12 when he was born).
Prince Arthur was expected to become king, only the SECOND monarch in a usurper dynasty let's not forget, meaning they would have both been made very aware of the imperative for them to have an heir of their own.
      Virgin when she married Henry?
      Don't make me laugh!!

    • @Marmite-and-Molasses
      @Marmite-and-Molasses 2 місяці тому +3

@@noniousxltruffles7454 Are you illiterate? You make me laugh. I never said anything about her being a virgin, and in fact, I don't think she would have been either. So, why do you suppose Henry VII and his son who became Henry VIII sought permission from The Pope for him to marry his brother's widow knowing this? Do you not have any critical thinking skills? It was their family she married into. Henry VII thought it good for her to marry the new heir because of the political alliance that the marriage created which was intended for his heir.
Infanta Catherina was a Spanish Princess, daughter of Queen Isabella of Castille and King Ferdinand of Aragon. Her non-virgin self was perfectly fine for the Tudors, for Henry VIII until she failed to have a surviving prince for him, meaning that the Tudor dynasty would end when he died and a new name would take over. Your narrative, that of Henry VIII's is beyond asinine. And as I said, HAD MARY TUDOR BEEN A BOY, CATHERINE WOULD HAVE REMAINED QUEEN BECAUSE IT WAS A LEGITIMATE SON WHICH HENRY NEEDED AND ONLY A WIFE COULD PRODUCE THAT! I'd tell you to read a proper history book, but it doesn't look like you understand written English too well. Don't bother me again with this nonsense. Catherine of Aragon's virginity had nothing to do with why Henry tossed her aside. It had to do with her inability to produce a male heir for the survival of Henry's dynasty.
In those days, England also had yet to have a declared Regnant Queen, every declared monarch had been male! The virginity aspect was merely Henry's excuse to have his Catholic marriage annulled because The Catholic Church would not grant a divorce because he was unable to produce an heir with his Queen. You are not speaking to an ignoramus here. I am well aware of the situation and the details of those marriages and what came after and why. You are stuck on an excuse which the Tudor family would have been more than aware of. That's what's funny.

Many royals' coffins have been opened. Edward The Confessor's was opened and his crown and other things including supposedly a ring which contained the sapphire that sits in the centre of the cross on top of the current Imperial State Crown were removed. They were deemed holy relics when he was canonised. The original St. Edward's Crown was his crown from his coffin. Also, many saints' coffins are opened and their body parts and other items removed which are deemed holy relics. They are put into reliquaries and kept and transported around. Recently, a saint's arm went on tour. This is common for Catholics, especially in those days, although in the 18th century, England was now Protestant. There have been many instances of English Kings' coffins being opened many years later. The Catholic Church still opens saints' coffins to look at the remains. Mary, Queen of Scots, not English but..., once was in possession of the head of Queen Margaret, wife of Malcolm III, she was canonised by the Church and is known as St. Margaret.

They were all true Queens of England as Henry divorced the Catholic Church, so they no longer had domain over England. But Catherine was the first. They also had to get permission from The Pope to marry because she was previously married to Prince Arthur and claimed that the marriage was not consummated, but that may not be true either, in which case, her marriage to Henry VIII would be void I suppose according to The Church. But yes, she was Queen of England for the duration of her marriage to Henry VIII and produced one of his heirs, Mary I of England, the first female monarch to have a reign beyond 9 days, as horrid as it was. According to the Catholic Church, she would have been the rightful Queen until her death, but The Catholic Church was no longer in charge of England anymore, Henry VIII, England's King, was; therefore, she was no longer Queen in England where it actually counted/mattered once the marriage was dissolved in England. Unfair, wrong, but this is what happened in the KINGDOM. The King took his independence from Papal authority, which was another tyrannical institution by the way, giving blessings for the invasions of other kingdoms and conducting persecutions, tortures and murders of innocent people. No powerful entities are innocent, not The Church and not Henry.

Children dying young was very common in those days. Edward did not make it to adulthood, Elizabeth never married, not sure about Henry Fitzroy, I think he died rather young too, but I can't remember. The only one who was married but never had children was Mary, but she was only married for four years because she died five years into her reign. Take a look at Queen Anne. She had 17 pregnancies and none of her children who made it to birth survived past childhood, which is what gave us the German Hanoverians as her successors and ended the Stuart Dynasty. Henry VIII also had at least two siblings who died in early childhood, his sister Elizabeth, and a brother, I believe. Then of course his older brother, Arthur who was supposed to be succeed their father, Catherine of Aragon's first husband, died young as well of illness. If you look at most of the monarchs in the centuries before, most of them had children who died or multiple children who died as did the rest of society in those days.

She was the daughter of the two people responsible along with the Catholic church for the Spanish Inquisition. King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I were the founders of the Spanish Inquisition. Also look up her sister who succeeded them. Queen Juana (Joanna). All the infantas married into foreign royal families because that is what Royals used to do up until recently so as to have alliances and maintain their royal blood. Queen Catherine's great-nephew married her daughter, Mary. If they had had children, the German/Austrian Habsburg dynasty would have taken over England as it did with the Spanish house as Catherine's sister, Infanta Juana, married into their family. Catherine would have been better off being married off to someone else, but obviously her family wanted an English alliance, and no one could read the future. Also, if Catherine had a son who survived, she would have remained Queen of England.

Sadly, life isn't fair.... specially to those women.

Accepting his divorce would had spared her and her daughter a lot of suffering but she believed she was fighting for her and her daughter's rights. Her mother was a queen in her own right and other European queens as well. Henry was so obsessed with a make heir he was to blind and biased to see that.

@@Thelma158 What was his reasoning with needing a Male heir? If you reflect on his life & his fathers life... you will see concerns of 'Power vs Peace'. The people have been fighting and dying for years.... All Henry VIII wanted was a smooth transition from one Leader to another.
Its easy to label someone a bigot without acknowledgeing that persons past, culture & concerns. He wanted peace for his people.

She could never just accept the divorce because to do so would have violated her deeply held religious beliefs. She was Catholic until her death. She believed in the doctrine of the Catholic Church which states that what God hath put together, no man can carry asunder. She believed that divorce was impossible for a consummated marriage and that her marriage to Henry VIII was valid because the proper dispensations had been sought and all impediment to the marriage had been legitimately removed. So because of her faith, she believed herself to be the rightful wife of Henry VIII and was faithful to him even to her dying breath. I take her name as my penname for these reasons. She was truly a woman of faith and fidelity, and I want to be like her.

@@CatherineAragon1536 Booooooooo.... The marriage should have been nullified. Catholic do believe in Nullification of marriage for certain reasons. She was a failed Queen. She had one very important job and failed.

@@ltlwlwl5057 The Church is NOT the same as it was in those days. The pope could not grant an annulment to a marriage that was deemed to be valid. Nullity declares that the marriage never happened because of an impediment that could not be removed but was performed anyway. Or because the marriage was never consummated. Until 1965+, all marriages performed in the Catholic Church were presumed valid unless it could verifiably be proven otherwise. Henry VIII had sought that annulment, but because all of the impediments to that marriage were able to be removed legitimately and had been, and because the marriage had obviously been consummated, the pope had not the authority to declare the marriage null when it was obviously valid. Annulments are not simply a Catholic form of divorce, but a declaration that the marriage was never valid in the first place and therefore the children of that "union" would be illegitimate.
It was not Catherine's fault that she only bore one surviving daughter and all of the other babies died in early infancy. It was the era in which they lived, possibly RH factor incompatibility, or something else that was absolutely beyond her control. They did not have the ability to save babies in those days who were born prematurely, or treat RH factor incompatibility, or other problems. Therefore, nobody has the right to blame her for her lack of ability to bear a son who survived to adulthood. SHE DID HER JOB. Do not blame her for a defect of nature.
I am Catholic in the same way that she was Catholic. Catherine of Aragon, pray for us!
