The body of QE1 was wrapped in waxed cloth and placed into a lead envelope. The coffin is of oak and elm, with a Tudor rose and 1603 on the lid. When last observed, had a crack at the top and was crumbling a bit at the sides. However, due to the lead sealing, she is likely well preserved to this day. The embalming was evidenced in part by Richard Busby in 1670 at the funeral of General Monck, when two funeral urns were discovered. Arthur Penrhyn Stanley went into the vault in the 1860's. A little known fact was that the vault was opened again in 1976, as was that of some of the Stuarts. It was due to a suspect gas leak. The Stuart coffins were more like lead linings and that of Charles II in particular was not a pleasant one to see.
