Killzone 2 is a first-person shooter video game for the PlayStation 3, developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the second main installment in the Killzone series, following 2004's Killzone. Killzone 2 was released worldwide late February 2009.
Similar to its predecessor, Killzone 2 takes place in the 24th century and chronicles the conflict between two human factions; the Vektans, and the Helghast. The game takes place two years after the events of Killzone and follows protagonist Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko as he and his unit battle the Helghast as the Vektans invade Helghan. The protagonist of Killzone and Killzone: Liberation, Cpt./Col. Jan Templar, returns in a supporting role, along with Rico Velasquez. Killzone 2 is played from a first-person view and allows the player to use a variety of weapons.
Killzone 2 was widely anticipated prior to its release. It was critically acclaimed by critics and fans, who praised it as a superior title to the original Killzone. Additional praise was given to the game's visuals, action, multiplayer modes, soundtrack and atmosphere, although criticism was directed at the narrative. The game's critical and commercial success led to a sequel, Killzone 3, which was released in February 2011.
Guerrilla Games announced that the servers for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 would shut down on March 29, 2018. The servers have since been offline, and can no longer be played online

Impressive video as always!
I'm going to do it, but not because you told me to.
You think that last level was impossible? Try Black's last mission holy Fuck that some Shiiiiot
This is one of the few games it actually feels like war, it's hard, dark, throws a shit ton of enemies at you, the AI is pretty capable to destroy you, it feels heavy and weighty to play, it's total chaos. I love this game for that.
Thanks, same thoughts
Yeh, I just played this recently, and no other game has felt as visceral in that 'entrenched' in war feeling. Not even the sequels, not even close.
That's the same thing I always told people trying to get them to play it. And still stand by it. Even all these years later, I've never played a game that felt more like being in a real combat zone. Even 40 COD's, and MOH's later. Worked well in the campaign, in the multiplayer though, it just felt like playing against people who had already adapted to the controls, while it was handicapping you. Still one of the best shooter experiences I've ever played though, once you accept it for what it is. You aren't supposed to be able to reload instantly, you need conserve each bullet like you were in real danger. A single grenade can clean a whole room. And I loved it for that.
@@dishonoredundeadwhile I completely agree with your comment i think there’s another game that is just as visceral, gritty and weighty as killzone2. it’s called Black
Yep. I still remember the excitement when we landed and finally took Visari Square.
The feeling firepower for every weapon in this game is impressive
The isa assault rifle sound effect was so meaty. Best feeling is lining up a headshot with a shotgun or sniper and hearing the watermelon sound effect.
@@MrNuclearturtle that's right!

The LMG sounded like it was tearing through metal. Rad as fuck
I would insta-buy a Killzone Trilogy Remaster for PS4 AND PC
Killzone is a Sony IP. Very little chance of it coming to PC. A PS4 port at 60FPS would be perfectly fine for me though.
SurvivalHorror100 with the multiplayer, of course. To be able to play KZ3 multiplayer again would allow me to die happily.
@@gononhisphone6399 man i didnt get to play that but i heard good things...shadows fall mp was fun though!
@@demetriuservin2874 lol no it wasn't... everyone was just walking around with rocket launchers or other explosive shit.
@@trashaimgamer7822 So... like Halo? lol
One of the memories I'll never forget from this game was its fantastic enemy AI. I very distinctly remember fighting a few guys, and picking them all off except one. I saw him go behind cover, and he refused to come out while I was staring at where he was. After like 10 or 15 seconds of staring, I thought that I had to have killed him without realizing, and went to move up, only for the dude to pop out of cover and get the drop on me. It's really something that a human player would actually do; wait for an enemy to be in the open to start shooting. It really was cool as hell. The weapons causing flashes of light that cast shadows is a touch in FPSs that you still don't see often, even today. It was a beautiful game at the time and I think it still stands up graphically pretty well today. It does a lot of stuff that modern FPSs just ignore.
SixAxis in Killzone was probably just pushed by Sony, because that was big deal for them back then. Same with 3D mode in Killzone 3.
Also that semiauto rifle is based on M14 rather M1. Also 2x... I love Helghast design (I think I said it before). I forgot how good Radec's uniform looks (that helmet designed to look like officer hat, I love it!). Even their weapons design match with architecture.
If you love the helghast desigh watch Jin-Roh, you will love it.
SixAxis was pushed hard to distract from the lack of rumble in early PS3 controllers because of legal issues. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DualShock#DualShock_3
killzones 3d was pretty neat imo
Reminds me of when the Vita was released. That first run of games all had the rear touchpad involved in some capacity, usually to the detriment of the gameplay.
Not to forget Killzone 3 also had Playstation Move support.
Soooo…how's the kangaroo thing going?
Brazzers when?
Ahahah
I was more wondering about him with Koalas and eucalyptus leaflets

An aussie told me that since kangaroos don’t give vaginal birth their pussies are some of the tightest out there.
This game is fun with impressive graphics and brutal combat, i love the screaming helgast trooper dying.
*WE’RE PINNED DOWN!*
@@MoonMinHo haha the memories are coming back to me!!!
🙂 reminds me of FEAR
The graphical improvement of Killzone 2 from 1 really reminds me of Resistance series. I mean, both game sequels had vibrant and dynamic colour/environment settings fixed up as in contrast to monotonically coloured originals. Pretty interesting coincidence
😀 yup, definitely worth a pickup, just pu all of Killzone & all of Resistance, yay! 📀📀📀😍🎮📀📀📀
Saying that, you mentioning the resistance series has an evolution the same way as the gears of war franchise and both series had their installments come out at the same time. The first games came out in 2006 with a brown/ grey art style thats almost Gothic and feels really oppressive. The second games came out in 2008 with a bright artstlye but also felt epic in its scope, with the third game in both franchises coming out in 2011 and felt more like guerrilla warfare. Really big coincidence.
@@MrNuclearturtle 😀 yup, they are interesting as a historical study on video game design 😊
I wish both Killzone and Resistance series could get HD remakes. Two great shooter franchises just thrown away...
@@MrNuclearturtle seriously the jump from gears 1-2 is really crazy but then gears 3 is almost unbelievable that it's on the same system and engine as the first
Radec is easily one of the most memorable villains in a FPS game. Dude was entertaining & badass. He & Visari were such a good combo for the game.
"Controlling a mech is always fun in a first person shooter." I thought you hated the mech levels from Quake 4.
I would imagine since it clashes horribly with the break neck movement speed in quake 4 so the mech was like going in quick sand

Killzone, the game where you play for the bad guys without realizing it. Also, how these "marines" run around without any gasmasks? Native helgans wear those not to die, but foreign jarheads dont?
They've terraformed a lot of the planet by then, and it's more so a cultural and health related thing at that point. Their whole thing was overcoming the death air and building up after the fact. So it's more a reminder to their heritage and such. Also, it probably does help them because they are weaker, phyically. Hence the heavy armor on everyone except the guys with caps that run at you with knives.
I remember reading that Helghast were actually physically stronger than normal humans.
Everybody’s bad in KZ universe
@@amoryblaine3292 absolute Bullshit what you write. There was once an official Homepage where you could read the Lore. They took it off, like the servers for Killzone 2 and 3. After Killzone it makes sense to do as if the Lore never existed. They "betrayed" themselves. If you read the Lore you know what I mean. In general fuck these greedy bastards. Nowadays you can buy dlc shit to the point that you can give a company real money for sth. like a skin ingame. But they didnt gave the opportunity to a fanbase to keep running the servers? In Shadow Fall you can only acces the iconic weapon through buying it with real money(m82rifle) The StA is complete BS like the rest of the game. Kaizer my Ass
I realised this about 10 minutes into playing Killzone 2 lol (it was my first Killzone game). Like, yeah the Helghast weren't without fault but they were oppressed AF by the Vektans for decades

this was easily one of my favorite games of the ps3 era, I remember playing the shit out of the multiplayer, it was fantastic, and getting 100% on the trophies.
same!!! I remember when the beta came out. it was super bowl weekend and I was playing with a friend who lived nearby cause we met on Facebook and found out qe both had a ps3, fast forward 13 years he is my best friend and I met my other two closest friends through him. It really is crazy the power of bringing people together that video games have
Man, all these 10/20 year game anniversaries are really making me feel old...
Imagine 40 year game anniversaries...
This, alongside Uncharted 2, were my first PS3 games and I still consider this one among one of my favorites. The gunplay and detail was just far too good. One of those games you can keep coming back to, or looking into videos about, and still learning little tiny things. For example, there's over 200 or so lines in for just the Helghast grunts to yell out (and they don't spam-talk it like the first game, thankfully), some of them have little animations to brag about your death, and the giant cockroach-like bugs will actually munch on ragdolls if one guy dies near it. The gunplay is good, the scripts didn't fall into the MW2 gimmick of throwing some new toy your way every 5 seconds, and the multiplayer... holy shit that was so good, and among some of the last console games to be smart enough to give you a server list system to play by your own rules, games, maps, and whatever else you wanted to find and look for to play, as well as an in-depth clan system. I think if it had released to more of an audience, it could have earned a more serious competetive and torunament scene around it. It was also a brilliant move to have dynamic objectives. Just all in all one of my favorites in military shooters, if not the very best of that type. ...but yeah, that gun limit is a real pain.
Also if you know somebody that got a platinum, they are a god. This game was infamous for that trophy where you had to be in the top online players of that week/month or so.
Weapon limit has to be the shittiest mechanic to be implemented in an FPS.
To be honest most of shooters from those times had horrible mechanics. Checkpoints, health regeneration, cover systems, cutscenes after every 10 seconds of gameplay, you name it.
Halo and FEAR does it well.
bazooka93 u lost me at checkpoints
Crass yes, cuz in real life you would carry ten weapons 😂 sure two pistols and two big guns, but games give you knife and pistol
@Kyros Droztamyr I get that when a game is going for realism in gameplay (CoD 1-2, Stalker), but most of these were extremely exaggerated, which made the weapon limit just nonsensical. Bioshock Infinite really pissed me off with this design choice. I could summon lightning storms and jump around the city like some speampunk Spiderman, but carrying 3 weapons is too much?
I gave up on asking for Freedom Fighters review

KZ2’s control scheme is great. Every shot feels weighty and impactful where each encounter is important and forces you to focus on other tactics besides just running and gunning enemies via the same method every time. The only game from last gen I go back to for its multiplayer even if offline.
Man i had memories... really loved all the vehicle designs and invasion cinemtatics, and how in multiplayer YOU CAN ACTUALLY SHOOT THE REVIVABLE ENEMIES
I know you mostly do FPS games but since you're doing the Killzone franchise, please checkout killzone liberation on psp as well. ITS GUD.
playing shooters on psp is a form of torture

Even better than Liberation is the PS Vita KIllzone game, Killzone: Mercenary. Its the most AAA game to ever be on a handheld and it surprisingly worked very well.
It is not good.

6:32 Unfortunately, *Quake 4* 's least joyful portions took place when the player was forced to play in a SMC Walker. :-/
In the options there's a High Precision setting you can turn on that makes the controls more responsive.
I'm very late to the party but why the heck wasn't that default?! :D I mean, I remember playing this game for less than an hour because of the incredibly "floaty" controls and that was way before I became a true snob and could tolerate the weirdest of button layouts or even camera acceleration. If only I had known... I really liked the look of the game. Today if the controls can't be adusted to perfection I'm not even going to give the game a chance :(
@@The.Jimmyboy Honestly, I kind of prefer the floaty controls, but I'd call them weighty. While jumping from any game to Killzone 2 always took a bit getting used to because of the stark difference. But if you could get used to them, which you do with time.
It provided a unique sense of weight and a unique gameplay experience since everyone else in multiplayer was restricted to the same setup. The dynamic was great. Add in the warzone mode and it was amazing. It's the kind of thing only controller console fps can provide.
I'm a PC player at my core so on console I like it when the experience differs. On PC though, since I know I can move my mouse in an instant to an enemy's skull, the expectations I have for controls are different. Unless the gun mechanics deem it otherwise, more realistic etc..
I don't think you understand actually how impressive the post processing is, dismissing it all as just "smoke and mirrors" is a discredit to the incredible use of the hardware.
I don't know how he could say that with a straight face while praising F.E.A.R.'s graphics, which also made heavy use of post-processing.
I miss this game so damn much. The multiplayer was amazing in 2 and 3
Killzone 2 is a masterpiece.

King Hippo I’m sorry that it didn’t have a “battle royale” mode for you snowflake
@@kinghippo7983 It could have been, seriously, but then they went and fucked up Killzone with... _Shadowfall..._ That game was so un-Killzone nothing could save it, thus the series was dropped because it performed too poorly... I'm sorry, that just really grinds my gears.
Killzone 3 was meh, partially because _everyone_ was hyped to see what came after the Killzone 2 events but the developers just... "skipped" it. By the time we actually find out, it doesn't have the intense atmosphere anymore.
@@kinghippo7983 KZ 2 & 3 are better games than any cartoonic Halo shit
Kz 2 was the first ps3 game i got and its visuals blew me away.. nothing i had on x360 even came close. I then instantly understood why it was so expensive
You forgot to mention the excellent KZ: Mercenaries ;) It is FPS and part of the series.
Back when developers fixed games with sequels and actually were finished products
I recently bought this game once more (I had sold all my PS3 games a couple of years back) and fell in love with it all over again. It's art style and gameplay mechanics make it to me one of the -if not the- best War Shooters alongside Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30. The sixaxis gimmicks are a pain in the ass, albeit not overused, and the input delay is something one needs to get used to, but nothing in another war shooter ever made me feel the oppresion of the Helghan homeworld, with their artificial storms and hostile weather, a truly gritty war scenario.
Animations were top of the line too (That feeling of weight added to everything was something lost in KZ3 in my opinion), and all around the feeling this game gave me when playing it, I could never find in another shooter.
Like you said, a true shame that it never came out in PC, but being a Sony IP, that never surprised me. The real shame, though, was Shadowfall. But I guess we'll see that a bit later, right?
Watching gman trying to use sixaxis controls is like watching someone else have a stroke while you have one yourself.
I was really impressed seeing these graphics and gameplay again after so long. Then I remembered, this is likely because this is back when games were FINISHED and polished before release.
Thanks for the reminder. I've been thinking about my PS3 for a while. Might be time to relive old memories again.
This game has aged very very well...
Killzone 2 = the best Killzone game, I'll insta buy the day a remaster goes out !
At 6:31 im gonna dispute that point and say that the powerloader in Aliens: Colonial Marines was the worst part of the game up to that point and made me uninstall the game.
I love you
I wanna see him review Killzone 3. I loved the ability to execute enemies, especially the one in which the protagonist eye gouges a helghast soldier to death by shoving his thumbs into the glowing eyeholes in his helmet.
I thank you from the bottom of my hearth for making this series . These gems are so underrated and it hurts me till this day that they are.
I never understood the complaints about how this game looks.
IMO it looks far better than that pre-rendered demo, and it's still one of the best looking games ever made. You could release this today and nobody would know how old it actually is

Glory to Helghan!
as crazy as it sounds, playing this game with the move controller makes it vastly easier to get a good shot on enemies.

"Is it never not fun to jump into a mech?" Serious Sam 4 coming over the horizon.
I really would like to see Killzone Return. Maybe they could do a story-told-through-multiplayer type thing like Titanfall did. I just want to frag with these guns again. The gunplay in Killzone 2 was awesome, and I love the design choices and aesthetics of the series.
This is still one of the most gorgeous looking games ever made. You could release this today and people wouldnt complain about the graphics.
Still think the series as a whole is underrated. Gets too much undue hate

It's like the game has mouse smoothing. Killzone 3 finally dropped it.

@@navarrolevel7, I can understand that, personally have a strange weak spot for open world in games, but I don't think that it'll really suit Killzone stylistically and from narrative standpoint.
Nobody has the balls to unironically do a helghast campaign and if they do it will pull a EA Battlefront 2 and just have the character be a fucking turncoat by the end of it.
Loving the killzone reviews, excellent!
Pretty much hit the nail on the head: it looks and sounds fantastic but the controls are stiff and delayed and the one weapon limit means you will use an allround assault rifle 95% of the time, resulting in needlessly repetitive action. The sequel fixed all of those issues, so the developers learned from their mistakes.
The way the helghast whip and lash around when you shoot and kill them is absolutely beautiful
Still great graphics! i have my copy somewhere
Nice vid man!
I always loved the flying pickup truck look of the Intruders. It has a great retrofitted utilitarian look.
Had to pause and laugh my ass off on that little "Halo Fanboys tears" joke.
Cuz we were too busy playing Halo 3.
The visuals look like those fake games that they have in TV shows, movies, etc. where it looks too good to be true, except that this IS real (and that boggles my mind).
In the first half of this video I kept trying to remember why I disliked this game back when it first came out.
The second half reminded me exactly why. Was a real slog to play through.
I unironically think that Killzone 2's actual gameplay looks better than the trailer's.
I love it how Tourette's guy is mixed in this.
Awesome review GGG! Brought me back to getting this game for my 11th birthday. I got stuck on the helicopter boss fight and never beat it.
would be nice if you could review Killzone: Mercenary for the PSVita... probably the best in the series
The thing with the odd input lag is a design choice. They wanted the player to "feel the weight of the weapons", at least that's what they said back when the games came out. They also had this in Killzone 3. I played 2 and 3 quite a long time because the multiplayer was really awesome but I could never really get used to the delay in aiming.
Careful you may get blacklisted by Guerrilla Games
I bet you wouldn't say that if you were on the auto-barn

Was a decent game but man the input laggy controls sucked. The devs tried to call it "weight" lol
I liked it, the weightlessness in Killzone 3 was pure horseshit and too "Call of Duty". That game ruined the series anyways.
this was my favorite shooter ever, the graphics looked insane at that time, and everything felt so realistic with a sense of weight to it, and shooting took skill
This game is a MASTERPIECE
Killzone 2 is one of my favoutite FPS games on the PS3. I remember getting the game a few days before release. I went to the game store all hyped and asked them if they already had it. The man behind the counter said they didn't, but there was actually somebody on the way with a single copy of the game and they allowed me to buy it. I remember being incredibly hyped because of how realistic it looked, the marketing, the fact that teen-me was a PlayStation fanboy and it was the first time I knew of that a quality AAA game released that was developed in my own, small country.
I remember putting the game in my PS3, cranking up the volume and being blown away by the intro. I still remember Vasari's whole speech, word by word lol.
The "input delay" in the controls was actually a very conscious decision by the developers. It's done to make the player feel like they are actually in a war with a lot of heavy gear. When you wear heavy gear it doesn't make sense to be super quick and precise all the time. I think it's a love it or hate it thing, and personally I live it and I think it adds a lot to the atmosphere. Same goes for only able to carry 1 primary weapon.
They said this in a dutch interview back in the day, by a show called Gamekings. I think the video is still in UA-cam.
Hey man, first of all, love your vids; just wanted to ask if you were interested in streamin, i think it would be great for your channel, and, at least i would be watching every second of them, lol, keep kicking ass, greetings from Ecuador!

Damn I remember being a kid and playing this on PS3 for the first time. My dad loved getting me all kinds of shooters and whatnot for my birthday and Christmas, but this game always stuck with me due to the gritty and desolate atmosphere. Absolutely fun game, really hope it gets remastered to PS4 now that PS3 is shutting down it's servers.
It's insane how good this game looks even today.
I still remember how great this game felt back in the day , such a masterpiece!
Lol I finished this game on the highest difficulty ... That last level must have take a few years of my life with all that raging 😂
I remember playing this for the first time and was blown away
I felt like the aiming and shooting of the weapons in this one felt, I dunno, heavy? Maybe I have to replay it.
The reason why I think Crouch is on the Trigger is because KZ2 has a feature in that crouching reduces your weapon spread/increase accuracy (sort of like Counterstrike). Other shooters do this too, but many really don’t use it as heavily as KZ2 does.
So, crouch has a variety of functions - you can crouch behind cover and peak out to shoot which I found very useful personally so it’s interesting we had a different experience there. If you leave it on the trigger it’s very convenient to do and doesn’t require you to lift your thumb off an analog like many others shooters do which put crouch on the facebutton for example.
Crouching reduces weapon spread/increases accuracy at the cost of some speed. This means you can easily become more accurate, but you can’t move as fast - it’s a compromise middle step between regular and aim down sight. Many games just have two (normal and ADS) with nothing in the middle.
I’m one of the weirdos who actually prefers toggle ADS so the default control was wonderful for me. You have a lot of options to juggle at any given time - full speed with default accuracy, crouch with better accuracy and reduces speed, or ADS with even more reduced speed (or ADS + crouch presumably for maximum accuracy where you’re basically a sitting duck without cover).
In a way the crouch in KZ2 works more like crouch in CSGO. I really like and totally understand why crouch was placed on the trigger in this case. As the KZ games progressed past 2 I personally feel they just became closer and closer to CoD and every other shooter instead of leaning into the differences and the things that made them unique.
In games where crouch is mapped to a face button for example, you have to lift your thumb off the stick to do it - the KZ2 default control scheme lets you crouch, sprint, ADS, throw grenades (all your core stuff) without ever moving your thumbs from the sticks which is huge.
In other games where pressing crouch is less convenient to do, I find it’s just a feature which is underused. CSGO and KZ2 are some of the best games to represent how useful crouching can actually be for an FPS control scheme. I love having that middle step of accuracy and speed and wish more shooters did something similar.
This game was so good back in the day, shocked how shadow fall is now where near as good as 2 and 3, games from an earlier console generation
Thank you for talking about the control issues. This game is almost great but I think having poor shooting mechanics is an unforgivable flaw.
Good graphics, good gunplay but bad story and too short.
I still think this is one of the best looking games made with it's artstyle and processing effects.
If you could actually aim in this without the shitty input lag it would have been so much better. Killzone 3 fixed this issue.
haha that whole anthem EA thing was pretty funny to watch, really unbecoming of you
Everyone thought the gggman was slowly getting into the hands of EA, but then he gave the middle finger of justice to those greedy numbnuts with his anthem review
I don't see how it was unbecoming of ggg
@@MoonMinHo he still got that fine ea sponsor money
BiGoNS hmm. Then I hope he burns the whole money or donate them in charity for good cause
@@MoonMinHo (X) Doubt :)
I remember watching my friend playing it and making fun of him because he couldn't hit shit. Than he gave me the controller and I couldn't believe anyone would have green lit the input delay. It's horrible
