    Awesome video. Many thanks for your help, managed to get this sorted finally! Recently upgraded to the new 1.41 firmware and had nothing but trouble and it was your video that explained the extra RAM for the drive and enabling the parallel cable that fixed it.

    Finally, I am catching up on your videos, albeit in reverse order. This was a great demo. I have never had any hands-on time with an Ultimate64; it is very configurable, indeed. And wow, _speed_ _increase_ is an understatement! I recently purchased a ZoomFloppy from Jim Brain at RETRO Innovations. ZoomFloppy has "parallel access hardware support" so I imagine it would work with a DolphinDos. Hmmm.

    • @TheHighlander71
      @TheHighlander71  5 років тому +1

      Haha..wonderful. I've heard of this ZoomFloppy product before. I imagine that it would be just as fast, if not faster than Dolphin (which was invented decades ago).
      I've learned today though, that installing the DolphinDos Kernal in your C64 would remove Datasette support.

    What other kernal replacements exist? Not just drive speed boosters, per se. I'm already aware of exos, speeddos, pro-v1, and other speed kernals. What about tools or diagnostics? Editors? Programming IDE?

    • @TheHighlander71
      @TheHighlander71  5 років тому +2

      That's a good question. Besides all the speed loaders, people have largely thought of things that made life easier as a programmer or a user. But nothing I've seen was along the lines of actual editors or assemblers (imagine!!). I think all of them sacrifice the tape and RS232 routines. This created a lot of space. As far as I know nothing much more useful than speedloaders were made. Perhaps someone else can prove me wrong..hope so :)

    I have had the U2+ for over a year but found it not plug and play. The U64 is amazing but I thought about being first in line but have waited this past 16 months. I am somewhat alone here in my area without any support. But I have lots C64 gadgets. This video explains a great deal of the nuances of the fast loading issue. I have Jiffy on one C64C and a CMD HD and SD2iec so Jiffy still has place. My 1581 is fast to load GEOS etc but am still missing out on U2+/U64. Thanks for letting me vent. lol

      I suppose the 1541Ultimate does have a lot of functions, and you can fidget with it endlessly. Personally I just have a micro-sd inside and I use it to load games. But let's face it, a bit of documentation would be nice wouldn't it?
      Sixteen months is long. Have you contacted Gideon on Facebook about that? The waiting times are long, but this sounds extreme.
      I've actually never used JiffyDos they way it was intended (as a hardware install) so I'm glad to be able to try it like this.

      It's really usefull dude ! Without you i would even not have considered using these alternative kernels on My Ultimate 64. Plus Even if i knew about them, i did not really know what they were meant for and how to configure them. After having watched your video i can see there are some parameters you can't guess. It's very uncommon to see such great quality videos covering a topic in such a very efficient way. It's not only about how we do it, but what it's meant for, where it's coming from, etc. What else ? I'm pretty sure (even if oviously you must have spent lots of time to make it so comprehensive) you could produce an impressive series of videos for the Ultimate 64 ! Thank you so much again ;)

    • @TheHighlander71

      I would, but I'm not sure if you actually can. First of all the C64 you have the 1541Ultimate connected to must also have JiffyDos ROMs installed. Otherwise it's just not going to work. I'm also not sure if the 1541Ultimate can set the memory requirements and the parallel cable setting like the Ultimate64 can. I would assume it does, because the 1541 emulation on the Ultimate64 is the same as on the 1541Ultimate.

    Always steered away from dolphin and jiffy dos under the understanding that compatibility would be low. Just like with that ‘Blue’ alternative disk drive back in the day. Was very reluctant altering my c64 and or drive on the inside. Resorted to using fastloading carts, speeding up tape 10x and disk 5x but that was software only.
    Back in the day I used to dream about the legendary 1Mb 1001 drive.

    • @TheHighlander71
      @TheHighlander71  5 років тому

      I don't know about compatibility, but one drawback is that there's no more tape support in the updated Kernal. On the Ultimate it's no problem switching between Kernals. I'll keep an eye out for compatibility problems...

    DolphinDos is crazy fast. Reads an entire track in 1 pass, then sends the data over the parallel cable. There are faster options available that read & transfer in one rotation, but they all blank the screen to do it, and most of them require you to rewrite a disk in their proprietary format and/or have the file written with an alternate sector interleave. DolphinDOS has none of these drawbacks, and can be used on commonly available disk images and will give you maximum speed.
    JiffyDOS is a great product, is still being sold, doesn't blank the screen, IS dependent on file interleave, but works with real hardware as well as the U64. (Its very, very difficult to get DolphinDOS hardware for real machines.)

    I love the video on jiffydos, what an effect. Why not have released a C64T with the speed issue fixed. Any shot of comparing emulation load, to jiffy for hogs like Raid On Bungling Bay ? I watched today the C64 Mini review by Face Destroyer (he is a bit like Alpha Omega Sin in the ranting ) He has such trouble with the cheap joystick that he yells an shouts angry noises, wrecking the video and leaving the viewers with questions about a $30 item, when he could buy a proper joystick for the video, a cheap Genesis controller, so a BIG BIG skip. Mini company needed to buy up generic genesis Dpad controllers for it.

      The quality of the joystick that comes with the mini has been an issue from the very start. Hardly something to make a video about (unless you're hungry for views by drama of course). Most of these mini consoles are criticised for not being flexible enough. The C64 mini is (or was) the cheapest, most extendible and best supported console on the market. Let's rant about its bad joystick.
