Thank you for posting this! Great review! I must admit that I cringed when the first game you tried did not work. But then I saw that you were still running V1.06 firmware. Have you tried updating to the latest version (at time of writing: 1.0B)? A lot of things got fixed since 1.06. I haven't verified yet if DonkeyKong works now, but it might! About stuff like the SidTap header; there is starting to be a *little* bit of documentation. 1541u-documentation.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ultimate64.html The SidTap header is explained there, among some other I/Os.
I'm sorry Gideon, I don't script this stuff so it's just a thing that happened. I updated the firmware right after making the video and Donkey Kong worked fine. I added a remark to the video to make that clear to viewers. Thank you for that documentation link. It will come in very handy. Besides that, I know the community will provide all the help needed.
The funniest thing so far is, that after screwing the bread bin shut, I hardly realise I'm not working with an actual c64 board and 1541 anymore. I'm thoroughly enjoying it :)

so do i understand it right that the sid chip / chips only work if using real cartridges, floppy and tapes and not with emulated software? because here he don't have any sid chips installed yet there is music / sound so that makes me be-leave if you run a emulated game the sid chips got emulated aswell? (running my UltimateII+ for years, best thing since sliced bread!! thank you so mutch!!!!!)
The build quality of these look really good, I hope you does go onto making more batches in the future, as I would love to get one at some stage.
I'm sure he'll keep making them when he gets orders. At least Gideon's done so in the past with the 1541Ultimate.
Although this is something I would never get or care about, it is nice to see someone having so much fun! Nice one man and wish you Happy Holidays!

Now that is a mighty fine introduction of the Ultimate 64! Love the music! Cool to see that our serial numbers are really really really really close (Zoolander accent). Gideon Zweijzer really did an awesome job like you said. He has my utmost respect as well. Curious after your experiences with your repro SID! Wonderful that it supports a lot of the original peripherals (whoever came up with that spelling should be sunken down into a deep abyss in the ocean).
I think you should fit this into one of the old spare breadbin/c64c cases I have laying around. How about a yellowed C64G case? :) I really would recommend putting it in a case to avoid accidentally damaging it and/or bumping off one of those super small surface mount thingies on the motherboard.
I use the same interal USB connector for my 'main collection' internal drive which happens to be a cheap USB stick like MicroSD card reader containing a 32Gb MicroSD card filled to the brim with
- games
- demos
- sids (also stereo/2sid files)
- Programming and dev tools
The other ports I'll use for other things like - file trading/swapping etc. I am not sure if there actually is a nice file manager that would work Norton Commander style from within the Ultimate 64 menu to do some nice file management stuff. (Tip!)
I've put it in a breadbin case for now but the keyboard needs a clean because it doesn't work very well. What I would like to do is have a closer look at the networking capabilities. If I could connect it to the network I can access my games on my NAS. Although that would seem a little too much off-commodore wouldn't it?

If you can get your hands on an old breadbin (perhaps one that doesn't work) you can just drop it in. No need for cumbersome brackets.

Great stuff! I just saw mark's video on his board, it's sure impressive considering it packs so much functionality and it's marginally pricier than the Reloaded - doesn't need the original chips either! Myself I'm expecting a MIST clone, I hope it arrives early January. Great things these FPGA boards! Enjoy!
That Mist stuff is great too. Especially for emulation purposes. I wonder what you think about those Intel NUC things. They look pretty cool as well.

Hey Wouter! Really enjoyed this video. I'm excited about the U64, and I'm still patiently waiting for mine. I'm expecting that most stuff will work, but not everything. You were just unlucky to pick one that didn't at first, heh.. :) I'm definitely hgonna keep my normal (Reloaded) machine close by in the beginning. Maybe some settings could make DK run better? :) But surely, Gideon will keep working to make it more and more compatible. I'm so very excited..!! FPGA is soo flexible! Just think how near-perfectly compatible this will be in a few years. Most likely. :)

Hey Brian. Actually I just installed the latest firmware and the game worked. I vaguely remembered the same problem being posted on facebook a while ago. I'm sure there will be demos and games that won't work, but I'm not bothered. It's just a fun piece of tech to play with.

after you click mount disk you can go back to menu and hit run disk it will straight boot the game without typing anything (at-least on ultimateII+, result is the same but its quicker and easier), thnx for nice video!

i didn't know it only worked in the old breadbin. think i have a defect one which
will fit it. i wished someone would license gideon gear and make larger batches
with new or old case at a better price.
It was made for a bread bin, so it will go in there without any other trouble. It's easy to get the keyboard mounts for a C64C, but it's something extra to either make or buy. I haven't regretted buying the U64 for a second. It's always a struggle producing hardware. The batch system makes sense, but you need iron patience :)

hardware. if some game / demo doesn't work it still seems faster than emulation

Maybe someone can produce a clear breadbin case. It seems a shame to not show off with how much work went into it. I guess the keyboard would cover it anyways. Very nice piece of tech thanks for sharing
Actually, I've seen a clear c64c case. The board would actually show because the keyboard is situated just right. The U64 has a led interface somehow. In a clear case that shows really nice.
Where would be the best place to get a case and keyboard? I am wanting the Commodore 64c (since that is the one I had as a kid). But, do I source out the case and keyboard separately? Or do I just try and find a 64c on eBay and then just remove the motherboard? I was thinking about getting a 64c separately and doing that but then it does start getting expensive. I just need the shell and keyboard so I can purchase the Ultimate Elite. Thanks!
If you want to save money, the best way to go would be to look for a parts-only breadbin. The U64 is made to fit into the breadbin. If you want to fit it inside a c64c case, you'll have to add new keyboard brackets. If you've got your mind set on a c64c case, then a parts-only c64c would be a good choice. You can also get new c64c cases (from Individual computers or pixelwizard - google them they're easy to find). Lots of choices but they won't be cheap. Canibalising a working c64 (breadbin or otherwise) is always a bit painful. Maybe ask around on Lemon64 forums, or ebay. I found one there just now for 15 pounds. You'll have to be patient probably. Is there a way to have the NIC load ROM files via CIFS/SMB?
No, currently you can only use FTP or telnet. I'm sure there's going to be a firmware update in the future that will handle that. The documentation says this about it at the moment: "Some of you may be familiar with the RR-net solution that brings Ethernet to the C-64. Currently, the built-in Ethernet port does not provide RR-net compatibility. However:
The Ethernet port is used natively by the firmware. There is some primitive support for file-transfer using FTP (needs improvement), and it is possible to connect to the Ultimate-II+ using a VT-100 terminal program on the Telnet port (port 23). This gives the possibility to control the machine remotely, and swap disks without actually interrupting the program running on the C-64."
I'm watching through the video now. Can this easily change from ntsc/pal mode? I would love to play pal games with my C64 setup.
Not yet but it will. NTSC isn't implemented yet, but it will most likely be a setting in the menu.
The device already has HDMI output, so you can just run it on any HDMI display.
I have made the first changes to the VIC timing engine, to support 63, 64 and 65 cycles per raster line, and also the number of raster lines can be switched. In PAL mode everything still seems to work just as well as in the latest released 1.0B firmware, so it looks like I haven't broken anything. However, that is not everything that needs to change. It is quite difficult, since many clock ratios need to switch on the fly as well, including the audio filters to get down to 48 kHz sample rate. Then there is the NTSC encoding of the analog signal, but that's probably peanuts. Work in progress!

Je zal wel stuk verder zijn met de U64 maar misschien kan je deze tip nog niet, heb zelf nog niet getest hoor l.
Want mijn U64 heeft heel raar probleem op hdmi geen cursor daar alleen kaders als ik wat mount.
Op crt monitor geen probleem daar als ik wat mount is normaal op hdmi niet.
Nieuwste versie firmware staat er op mnnnn suk.
Maar begin af te dwalen , wat wou zeggen je hoeft geen joysticks meer te wisselen wat we op de oude c64 hadden en wat je hier steeds doet.
Op de U64 als je in de game zit en joystick werkt niet doe dat dit druk op power button snel je komt weer in zwart menu waar de usb poorten zijn druk op de commodore key en op de J key ( tegelijk dus) Dan zou de U64 de andere poort moeten nemen. En werkt je joystick zonder te verplaatsen :) wat ik zeg heb zelf nog niet getest omdat nog in de shit zit met het probleem hdmi.
Ik heb wel soon zelfde mod in een echte c64 die het zelfde doet maar dan met 1 toets restore als ik die 2 a 3 seconden in hou gaat hij naar de andere joystick poort ;)) nice
Niet meer de oude irritatie van voeger of 2 joystick er in en maar gokken welke wordt nu weer gebruikt door de game of programma. Maar jou kennende weet je dit al.

Hmm, dat hdmi probleem herken ik niet echt. Vreemd. Ik weet wel dat niet alle HDMI versies compatible zijn. Misschien een andere HDMI kabel proberen? Ander scherm? De logica van de U64 is niet afhankelijk van de output, dus het zou moeten werken.
Ja, ik heb wel gezien dat je joysticks kunt swappen, maar ik ben niet zo slim dat ik daar gelijk gebruik van maak. Ik zal eens kijken hoe dat werkt. Bedankt voor de tip. Het is gewoon de macht der gewoonte dat ik die stekker in een ander gat prik :)
@@TheHighlander71 Ik kan het deed ik ook steeds maar als je het door hebt is toch erg makkelijk. En als nu niet werkt moet je maar aan Giddion vragen er zit een optie in de U64 die leven makkelijk maken met de joystick.
Ja over dat hdmi denk dat de kernals en rom files nooit goed zijn ingevoerd ook staat firmware 1.35 erop die ik niet kan vinden 1.34 is de hoogste die ik kan vinden de vorige eigenaar was een vriend van Gidion dus misschien beta versie ik weet het niet de case er omheen is moderne maar bouwkwaliteit is belabberd zeker als je er aan wil sleutel of upgraden Gammel bros plastic Duits zou toch goed moeten zijn ook zat berg storting in de audio poorts alles los draadjes sluiting niet te maken via de case je komt er niet bij ,heb alles gesloopt en bouw hem in een echte Breatbin 1983 case . Offer wel een originele c64 heb er toch 2. En dat voor €58,00 Duitse case zonde van geld toch.
Echt weer iets van deze tijd wil wel 100 uit geven voor een stevige mold plastic case moet toch kunnen, maken ze zo iets kwetsbaar stuk vuilnis met heel kleine zwarte tork schroefjes waar je geen bit voor kan vinden daar ga je al ;)
Net wat jij zij een oude auto met super fast blok erin heeft wel wat wil de led strip die hier in de case zat nu onder de onder kant plakken omdat de origineel cases dicht zijn.
Krijg je het effect van soon neon tube onder een auto wat verboden is tegen woordig in Nederland , dat is het plan pas bedacht.
Ps over je preek ;) dat je nooit spelen uit speelt nou ik ook niet en toch is het leuk.

Wat ik ook tof vind en niet in jou videos zag is de extra usb op de U64 inwendig gebruik als je die gebruikt eerst vol zetten met software heb je nóóit uit stekende delen acher in. Via FTP kan je files van pc naar de Inwendige usb stick transporteren via je eigen netwerk een leuke optie vind ik zelf. Laat je met rust nu ja eindelijk
En nee andre hdmi kabel of monitor helpt niet al getest zelfde resultaat
@@eddielegs344 Ja klinkt alsof die U64 dingen heeft die niet standaard zijn. 1.35? dat klinkt als iets experimenteels. misschien maar ff terug naar 1.34 en de teringzooi eraf halen. Hardware moet gewoon standaard zijn lijkt me.
Ik heb de smerigste oude case genomen die ik had voor mijn u64. ik wil er geen tempel van maken. ik heb hem om de haverklap open.
