  • Richard Wilhelm's granddaughter directed this documentary, a profound introduction to the Chinese world view. "I Ching" is an actual living oracle with it's roots in antiquity and protected from the west for centuries. This riveting documentary shows how Wilhelm first had to be uniquely trusted, before translating these predictive secrets and sharing the Oracle with Carl Jung, who published the I Ching for the first time for western audiences.

Having studied the I Ching for many years and used it as a guide for my own moral development, I have the utmost gratitude to Richard Wilhelm for making this ageless book of Chinese wisdom available to Western minds. A truly beautiful teacher for those looking for profound meaning in their lives.

The depth of I Ching (Yi Jing) is so profound that so many people can't understand it fully, it's not only a book of changes, divination but it's also a book about the universe and morals. To the Chinese, I Ching is like their bible.

I Ching is not like the bible for Chinese. It's not a must read, and not many Chinese read I Ching, but most of Chinese are influence by the way of thinking and its thoughts from I Ching.

I just started on the I-ching and it's a compliment to Islam rather than a contradiction... it's amazing that it lines up with our teachings...😊

Wilhelm is such a fascinating figure, his writings are at once insightful and mediated through the lens of his Christian convictions, making for an interesting blend of east and west in the philosophy he conveys. Where his method succeeds there is a truly penetrating insight that allows human nature to shine through, regardless of time and place, in all its compassion, wisdom and understanding. Very moving to hear the details of his life and studies.

Why are the people of China so unfortunate? While most countries in the world have adopted democracy, Chinese people still have to suffer under a dictatorship.

It is very difficult to understand this movie for the hearing challenged. The background noise of the original narration combines with the English translation into an unintelligible cacophony. Too bad, I’m very interested in this topic.

Great video about a wonderful man’s life. I discovered the I Ching in the 70’s and then completely forgot about it, this video brings me back to it, so thanks for posting . Simultaneous translation is always a bit tricky to follow, subtitles would have been better, nevertheless very enjoyable.

Coincidental, considering that the Taoist Yin/Yang symbol symbolizes balance and this documentary is about a part of Taoism.

Thanks for posting this. Wilhelm was unique in bringing centuries of Chinese wisdom to the western world via German and English language in partnership with Jung. We now see their works as rafts in a tumultuous sea of conflicting chaos. Did they have any idea of the impact they would have in our time?

No tengas ninguna duda , con antelación ellos quedaron impactados, occidente nunca quiso que se conociera a fondo la cultura occidental, hecho relevante . En occidente se conoció poco y nada , aún hoy de la cultura asiática , India y China en especial.

Richard Wilhelm was indeed a great and exceptional soul,. What got him to be more open and accepting of the traditional Chinese culture and way of life, it seems, was all the brutal, arrogant oppression of Western colonialism that he saw going on by the supposedly Christian nations of the West in China. Western so-called Christian "civilization" failing to practice even the basics of their religion in their relations with the Chinese - so much for JC's Golden Rule! If you want a Chinese perspective on all the crap of Western colonialism that the Chinese had to put up with, you can also watch the great Kung Fu movies of Bruce Lee and Jet Li. Bruce Lee was, besides being a peerless martial artist, also a great philosopher and a great human being as well. His counsel to us all? Be like Water (Trigram K'an / Hexagram 29 - K'an - Water, the Abysmal) my friend!

It is very nice to find this video and excited to see the interests from the West for this ancient Chinese text. It is quite informative and well made. However, I feel a bit disappointed the documentary starts with the Buddhist images. Buddhism was introduced to China centuries later after I Ching had been established as an important philosophical and divination text. I Ching is so important to Chinese indigenous philosophies such as Taoism and Confucianism, it would be much more appropriate to start with Taoist or Confucian images.

. Saludos.

The background speech blends in with the translation so easily, it really muddles the narration and makes it needlessly difficult to discern.

I can hardly call this a "Riveting documentary" when for over the first half its simply a middle aged woman revisiting her grandfathers old stomping ground at a pace of a trudging ox towing a reluctant cart. Interspersed with indulgences of nice scenery and oriental soundtrack. Yes, all very ambient etc but "Riveting" ..? Hardly. somnambulent .. certainly .
Lets see what the 2nd half brings . (if I can stay awake )
ps... two years of being posted and only 13 comments and 184 likes ..? (cough cough)
Later ..after watching the whole film.... For conscious spiritual knowledge ... go straight to the final 20 mins.
For an indulgence of a granddaughters affection of her grandfathers power ..watch the whole film .

Why so mean-spirited? For those of us who regularly consult and revere the I Ching, but know nothing at all about its preeminent translator, this documentary is - despite its flaws - a revelation.
