  • In 'The Man in the High Castle', characters use an ancient Chinese book, the I-Ching, to perform divination and seek answers to their questions. In fact, the author of The Man in the High Castle, Philip K Dick, used I-Ching divination himself when writing the novel! But how does this ancient form of I-Ching divination, using Yarrow Stalks, actually work?
Prof John Lai explains the practical how-to of I-Ching divination and the symbolic significance of the numbers it generates. John Lai is based at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is a Wadham alumnus (DPhil Oriental Studies, 2001). He was also a Wadham Visiting Fellow during the academic year 2022-23, when this video was recorded. Prof Lai's research includes the reception of the I-Ching in western and Christian traditions.

Thank you so much for your clear and interesting video. I have been a friend 😁of the I Ching from an age of 17 years. Back then I didnt understand it, but always had and have a huge respect as if the book was alive. Now I,m 54 and when I ask my good old wise friend I Ching a question I can feel its loyal and unconditional energy for guiding me to the best posible choice. Its so profound and mysterious. I am trully greatful to have this friend lying on my bookshelf. Thank you again for your expalnation and bring it to the west of this Earth we live upon.

I Ching also appears in His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. It is used by a scientist to communicate with the angels of that universe, who live in different worlds.

I have received reliable results using the three coin method. The yarrow method seems a long process to keep a question in mind while in process, but I can appreciate the traditional aspects and symbolism. As long as the process is random then pertinent results arise.

In the end this is what Phillip K. Dick thought of the I Ching: "I don't use the I Ching anymore. I'll tell ya, the I Ching told me more lies than anybody else I've ever known. The I Ching has a personality and it's very devious and very treacherous. And it feeds ya just what you want to hear. And it's really spaced out and burned out more people than I would care to name."

It's a mechanism for the user’s deep subconscious mind to communicate with the user. PK Dick’s final assessment is very profound in many ways.

That is a reflection of the diviner's own mind. You have to approach the I Ching with sincerity, modesty and the "need to know". I find that to get clear answers I need to do at least 35 mins of Zen meditation before presenting a question.

I've read this, too, and was surprosed by it because, to me, it means tha maybe Dick didnt understand the I Ching and devination in general as well as he should have before throwing. There are a lot of dead jerks floating around out there, and if u don't take that into consideration before throwing, you could get any one of them "answering" you (iow, screwing around with you). Dick also never mentioned psychic override, which my Guides use almost exclusively to speak to me through the I Ching, using hexagrams not in their original meaning but applying them to a standard English sentence. Example, 17, "to Follow", my Guides almost always use to mean "to Understand" (idiomatic use of "to follow" in English).
It's just a lot more complicated than it seems, qnd I dont mean the I Ching, I mean interacting with that invisible stratum of life in general, the I Ching being just one method available

So how does this relate to tossing the 3 coins 6 times?
