At first blush, this seemed like a fun novelty project, but after I saw it finished and I saw you hitting the chisel with a mallet, I realized how great of a design this actually is. A perfect solution for people who want to keep a chisel (or a few chisels) handy without cutting themselves or poking holes in their pockets or tool bag or damaging the chisel blades. If they clicked securely into place, both open and closed and were heavy duty enough to last, this could actually be a successful product. I’d buy three in different sizes for sure.
Social distancing collaboration is a great idea during the pandemic! The process of making Damascus steel is beautiful, and I love how you always tailor everyday objects to fit your style.
So Laura as promised some info on selfadhesive sandpaper: it is not that common, unfortunately, you might not find it at the"grinding section" on your local hardware store, for sure here in good old Europe, because it is mainly used for sharpening rather than sanding/grinding. I stumbled over this amazing stuff the first time on a Alec Steele video and made some research. You can find it online in some grid variations mostly from 80 to 250 and it comes mostly in rolls. The adhesion works mostly water activated, you just spray some water on the flat surface you want to adhere it to, rip off some sandpaper and press it on. Give it some minutes to soak up the water and get the glue started. To remove it just soak the used up paper in water and scratch it off with a painters knife (Spachtel), done. All the best, stay safe, Sven.
3M sandpaper is self adhesive (dunno about its availability in EU, but I'd imagine it's easy to find). It's heat activated. Just lay it down on the surface, and hit it with a heat gun...voila! (Got that tip from a Bobby Duke Arts video).

Some people like to think outside of the box. My favorite thing about your projects is there is no box to begin with. 😁 Very cool looking, sure to amaze the other kids on the playground, and functional too! Thanks for sharing!
@@miguelpadilla8544 I've checked some knifemaking forums and coffee etching is actually a thing- it makes some layers much darker but it's wears off easily (more of a problem for knives than chisels I think). But aside from that I have no clue why would you use coffee... It is slightly acidic, maybe that's got something to do with it
Not that you need anyone's approval, but I'm sure Damascus steel wunderkind Alec Steele would appreciate this project as much or more than I do. Great work!
I really like the idea of being able to protect the sharp edges from being damaged or causing damage to other objects. The case is right there & you don't have to go looking for it. You have a marvelous mind!
We can always wait for something awesome from you, Laura !!! No matter if it's wood, metal or any other kind of materials mixes 🤩 surrendering to your touch of master and your sensitivity !!!
I like these handtool hacks that you do. Was also very impressed with your bench grinder, sliding, chisel honing rig. I have a Richard Kell honing guide that is great but yours looks very sturdy!
I was working on items for my college students and missed the premiere... bummed, but as always, what a great way to start my week! Great shots of forging, and just a fun project... but you created a great tool
I know it is a butterfly knife, but I absentmindedly thought to my self "Switchblade Chisel" and now not only does Laura have another project but I need to go put together a Heavy Metal / Industrial band.
Was just thinking about order of operations. I find useful to picture before starting. Example of cutting your chisel sides out of the entire piece, then remove the extra length. Means you have more purchase in the vice, without having to risk damaging the vice.
The other example is the mirror finish polish, before heat treating and acid etching. Seems like wasted effort? Outcome is great and really liked the video, hopefully helpful tips 👍

Dangit! Missed the free class sign up....so close. Really fascinating project. From the title, I imagined a butterfly wood key cookie cutter type thing that could cut out a butterfly key in like one swing of the hammer. Your project was much better!
Unluckily, it is probably much worse than "Anscheinswaffe", for which "Führen" is illegal (i.e. you are not allowed to carry the item in public space). This is a "Verbotene Waffe nach Anlage 2, Abschnitt 1" which means that "Umgang" is verboten. "Umgang" includes mere possession of the item, as well as manufacturing it (and some other things). Yes, the author's intention here is obviously non-malicious, and non-criminal, but I don't think this changes the facts in any way. A Stemmeisen/Stechbeitel is by all means a sharpened blade, and this particular one has a "butterfly" form. So that's that, annoying as it is. Personally, I wouldn't want to publish evidence (video footage) that I made one of these. Germany is not particularly good at punishing actual hardcore criminals, but we're excellent at hunting down people who didn't mean any harm and didn't really do much wrong, other than some formal mistake.
I was using a thin grinding disk while I was working on a project. The edge somehow got a nick in it. I thought I will use it until the bad part wears away. The disk caught on an edge and exploded. A piece flew into my hand at the first knuckle on my left hand. I don't know how to explain this without the gore, but the piece went to the bone. I got it stitched, but the whole hand got infected and they had to pull the stitches back out, (to let the gash drain), and they gave me antibiotics. The shot of antibiotic had a very long needle, so my behind now hurt for days as well. lol It has been three months and I can now close the hand without a lot of discomfort. I have been closing the hand to try to stretch out the injured area and have it heal without restriction. The knuckle does not look the same as it did before. I will have to think of an interesting story about it. Maybe, while wrestling with a bear at my campsite..... I ask that you consider wearing a full face shield and gloves, (like the cut resistant type butchers and wood carvers use), when using a grinding disk. Best wishes to you from Nevada USA
That turned out amazing! Thanks for this nice collab! 😉💪🏽
Thank you my friend!!!❤️❤️
You are too freaking awesome too!!!!!😁😁😁
I like the idea of using a glued down sandpaper as an anti slip surface below the sandpaper you are using for sanding. Haven't seen that before!
Double up the sandpaper for twice the abrasion :)
There is always such a zen meditative quality to these builds/videos. They always leave me feeling more relaxed and even more inspired.
Thank you!!!

Porter-Cable sells adhesive sandpaper that doesn't require heat or water. In rolls of 4" wide to 10 yards for around $20 to $35.
Axminster stocks some very fine adhesive stuff from Hermes. Grits from 800 to 2500 in a lovely bright blue colour.

That’s awesome! I love it!
That's a lot of real estate on the chisel that's just begging for something to be etched onto it.

Came for the butterfly chisel....stayed for Smudo wearing a blanket!
Hahaha

Awesome build and deft handling of the butterfly at the end! All that practice using the Leatherman Free has paid off. 😁
❤️❤️❤️
That could be a great EDC for self defense. Chisel yourself out of a confrontation
I too was extremely impressed with handling of it at the end. I would slice my finger off

I agree with you, Seth. Laura's creativity is truly amazing. There is absolutely no way to predict what she will come up with next.
This is so cool!! And vastly more useful than an ordinary butterfly knife. Thanks for the great video, Laura!
The grain down the steel is so beautiful, it looks alive. I learn new things from each of your videos Laura, thanks.
I first wasn't Sure whether the handle could take the pressure, and was really surprised what a beating it could handle!
Love to see the Habu collaboration. Stunning work.
Thats amazing and I would definitely buy one!

I have the same question? Why could you use coffee? Thanks for your videos very nice

This is awesome. There's a dude on Instagram that's developing balisong scissors and they look really well designed.
And best coffee making video ever!
Haha
Great project and awesome cinematography as always! ❤
Really smart idea! Safer and more useful that regular butterfly knifes.
That’ll be handy fighting a zombie apocalypse. 🤣😂 Great job once again, Laura.
Great tool, great colab, great time watching the premiere. Thank you! Last word my son said before falling asleep: "Smudo!" 😴

Whimsical and well done!
For me, this is an ultra cool and handy chisel!! I have a few flat chisels that could fit the bill for a gadget like this. Might try this one myself.
Awesome!! I keep a bali (butterfly knife) at my cnc to play with while its cutting. Now I want to make butterfly tools 🔧!!
Laura’s Bench Grinder: “Hey, remember that time you were sponsored by Triton for like 5 minutes!”
Laura: “Shhhhsh Bench Grinder” 😬🤫
Hahahahaha
What a great build , turned out amazing 👍
very slick hack, Habu's Damascus is beautiful. You did that piece of steel proud. Thank you.
I love Damascus steel. Great project.
Sin afán de molestar me gustaba mas tu antiguo taller, se veía muy acogedor que despertaba la creatividad, inspirativo para realizar obras de arte.
Very cool!
Next, to put a screwdriver in a pocket pen? 🤔
Nice chisel Laura! 👌👌👌
One of the most beautiful chisels ever created I'd have to say

Sehr gelungen, tolle Idee, super Umsetzung
Looks cool! Great idea gluing the original to the new one as a template!
I am lazy like that :)

Ah yes, 2021. The year that Laura taught us the basic principles to turn a novelty comb into a butterfly knife. 😂
This was awesome! What a cool idea
I was working on items for my college students and missed the premiere... bummed, but as always, what a great way to start my week! Great shots of forging, and just a fun project... but you created a great tool
Genius !! Thanx for Sharing !
Looooooove her so much no waste no way!!!!
great project and video. very original. music is on point.
Crazy. I never considered saving flat beer for quenching blades...
Love this idea

Nice project, i Iike it.
Great idea. Close it up and protect the cutting edges.
I leave this under every video I watched, it helps the algorithm.
Hell yeah, what kind of tool or machine you "don't " have in your shop? Crazy!
Hell yeah I need this in my tool kit
So cool ! Cheers Laura and thanks for sharing. Happy Sunday! :)
You are using scraper/chisel a lot . Need pocket clip too . Cool build. Thank you Laura !
Thanks for the Video.
Awesome! Inspiring and well done as always.
Thumbs up and thanks for posting!
Hello Laura beautiful job
