Dublin has a much older history than waterford when the Norse arrived in the 9th century Dubliners lived in Dubhlinn for centuries and at Baile atha cliath since the 4th century i dont know what the oldest house in waterford is but the oldest house found so far in Dublin predates the norse and is Anglo saxon found a few years ago at copper alley D 8 plus Dublin had over 50 viking ruler kings in its history Waterford had about 12 Dublin got city status before waterford if we go back to the 9th century Dublin had two settlement towns that merged to become a city waterford was no more than a village and it took centuries to become a very small city but i like Waterford it has great people and is set for massive growth in the next few decades

Its widely accepted that Waterford is Irelands only city. This is well embedded in the national conciousness at this stage. While they did locate an Anglo Saxon habitation in Dublin I doubt very much they called themselves Dubliners. In addition there were surely Irish inhabitants...who are recognised as not urban dwelling.
Likewise it is likely that other locations may have Anglo Saxon settlement (albeit not found). I know the dear Dubs like to be first in all things...but give the Waterford fellas a break. Incidentally not a Waterford native.

You need to educate yourself on the viking history of Dublin. Dublin was officially established or founded by the vikings in 841. Dublin is certainly far older than Waterford.

@@TE-xk4tg Waterford….Irelands oldest city. It’s widely accepted nationally with the possible exception of Dublin centric….any vox pox among the Irish public at large will confirm. Fact.

You clearly have a bit of an anti-Dublin 'chip on the shoulder'. Again, can I advise you to educate yourself on Irish history and particularly the viking history of Dublin.

@@TE-xk4tg lived in Dublin 20 years. A truely fine city...but not alas the oldest...per Google or public perception.
I know that certain 'Dubs" dont accept that there any urban entities outside the M50...and that the rural people should know their place...that being considerably lower that sophisticated Dubin...sure Watrrford.is only a village.

We can agree on one thing that Dublin "is a truly fine city" but re ireland's oldest city, I prefer to believe in historical facts rather than fiction. Again, can I ask you to educate yourself on the history of viking Dublin? Also, I have absolutely nothing against rural Ireland as both my parents were rural Ireland people.

Nice town but have to completely dismiss the MYTH being continually propagated that Waterford is ireland's oldest city. Dublin was officially established and founded by the vikings in 841 during the First viking age. Waterford was established much later during Second viking age. I'll probably receive the usual 'black is white' argument from those intent on perpetuating the myth about Waterford but the Facts are the facts!
