Today I have a fun one! A Sibling rivalry under the Subaru flag. The 2023 BRZ makes 228hp and the 2022 WRX makes 271hp. Who will be the faster of the 2? both cars come in at $31k which makes them a great deal depending on if you need AWD and 4 doors or not!

I had my popcorn ready for this video, and was not disappointed! The BRZ puts out some impressive acceleration.
My buddy with a four or five year old gti was surprised how good my brz was without a turbo, definitely hung with him.
It's a shame Toyota wouldn't let them go turbo this round. So jealous of all the numbers I see coming from tuned VBs.
@@DragonKnightX12 the entire appeal of the BRZ/86 is that they're lightweight, RWD, naturally aspirated sports cars.
@@donjohnson2428 People have been begging for them to turbo these cars for years.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a very fun car. But it's got the same performance that Honda achieved back in 2009.

The BRZ regularly dynos 200-220whp in stock form and they weigh about 2800 pounds. Less drivetrain loss with RWD compared to AWD, and shorter gears make for better acceleration against WRX/STI especially in the top end. Also realize that at highway speeds the WRX/STI is a brick compared to the BRZ as far as aerodynamics go... so honestly not shocking results whatsoever. I'm still breaking in my 2023 BRZ and even at half throttle you can feel the torque pretty well. The car just wants to go!

Now having had a 22 Brz and now a 23 wrx, the wrx is just better as a daily with more useable room and suspension that deals better with crappy roads in my area. Also in rainy Fl the AWD is a plus. Love both though.
Same here! I went from the 22 GR86 (totaled tragically) and just picked up a 23 WRX. You feel everything with the BRZ and of course that’s by design. That feeling is unmatched. But the WRX is such a good daily and still quick when you want it to be!
Man, I’ve been between the 86 and VB for a good year now but between the lack of top end power on the 86 and all the expressway driving I do down in Miami, I’m thinking wrx and a full send tune is the way to go. How do you like the vb so far in Florida? Wasn’t sure if the AWD would be a benefit with our flat roads but you have a great point with all the rain we get.

Nice job, as always! Love the real world pulls w/ average, every day drivers. Shows these cars as they really are, and it seems they're both more than people would expect! If I would've gotten to drive a BRZ, it may have been a tough choice, but sadly none available when I bought my '23 WRX (not disappointed, though... excited about mod potential). Very interested to see you do one with new BRZ vs stock STi!
It seems cars are like what these days. They really are underrating everything for some reason.
I feel like the extra utility of the sedan and greater space in the WRX is what makes it - dude I can put top racks on this thing and get my kayaks on the top if I wanted and make 400 WHP. You can be just as fast as any modded BRZ with way more use capacity for daily drivering.
This is why my old bugeye feels faster 0-60 than my 22 WRX. Weight, RPMs, longer gears. One of these days I need to figure out what to do with the old boy. I want to do forged internals and bigger turbo but not sure about transmission and it's limit. Original pretty much everything aside from basic boltons and Utec tune.
My bugeye I just sold made the same power as my VB (320whp) but ran a quicker 0-60 and quarter mile because of the gearing and LSD
Got a 22 WRX Limited as my daily and a 24 BRZ tS on order for my enthusiast fun car.
I have a 2014 BRZ with full NA bolt ons on E85. Makes 199whp and has beat multiple STIs. I've also beaten the new BRZ as well in a roll, but only by a hair, and my car has a decent amount of weight reduction. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the new BRZ can easily beat an STI in a roll stock for stock.
10.6 compression ratio is still pretty high especially for a turbo engine on pump gas. That is the one advantage to direct injection. Those cars are tight!
Where did this video take place? Im interested to know at what elevation. The BRZ being NA and pulling on the WRX is surprising but is even more suprising if this is up in thinner air.
The BRZ/86 are so sexy. If I didn't need a more family oriented car the BRZ would be my top consideration. It still might be whenever the 13 focus daily finally gives it up. That wing on the white BRZ is straight 🔥.

Honestly I always looked down on BRZ’s for some reason thinking that this car is small and only good for autocross, but come to find out from your video that they are actually pretty quick 🤔
The previous gen WAS slow and only good for autocross.
Fortunately, this new motor with 220HP is exactly the right amount of power for this car while retaining the throttle response of an N/A engine.
Both great cars for sure! I was one of the fortunate few who owned both a 22 GR86, and my wife having the 22 WRX for about a year. My daily commute was always a blast, but the AWD eventually won over and traded the 86 in for a truck. Going from the light and tight feel of the 86 to the "bulkier" WRX took some getting used to, but now it has completely won me over. Maybe someday I will get another 86/BRZ, but for now the WRX is my go to for almost everything!
Yea I definitely believe it depends on what you use your car for and what you want to achieve. The WRX is absolutely fantastic for making power. The BRZ is something id leave stock and just have a blast with.
Yea I need a bigger car. Probably gonna get the TR since it's already primed for some bolt-ons and a pro tune.
Brz is a fun car to drive but it’s definitely an acquired taste. And very hard to get right now as it has been the past 2 yrs. Very long waiting list but is only a 2 person car. Granted they’re pretty much neck n neck due to weight of the wrx. But when we’re talking tuning of both vehicles then it becomes a different conversation

As I was saying on the last video, the GR86 can definitely get down and if it wasn't for the snow I would've kept it. It feels better than the VB wrx from a drivers standpoint. That said, the wrx has way more potential for power with tuning and bolt ons, and I can drive my VB all year. Miss my GR86 though.
Hi! How many meters above sea level this test was done (city)? :) IN Mexico City 2400 meters above sea level the BRZ is considerable slower.

I saw the killer b catch cans on that wrx, any idea how much oil the catch cans has collecte?
We are going to do a followup video on that in 2 weeks. Will be doing an oil change and will see what's in the cans.

It's 100% stock. Both cars have an axleback but that doesn't do anything.

the new brz with forced induction is tough to beat. If I didnt live in Buffalo I would have gone that route. the older gen with a procharger was shockingly fast. I cant imagine what could be done to the new one. It would make a lot of BMW owners cry.
I've seen the turbo kit for the new BRZ. On 93 it makes about 340ish who which puts it at a great power to weight ratio. Id love to drive one.

i have a 2024 brz-ts and i bought it over the wrx because of handling, and higher redline. lower weight and center of gravity, make the brz (in my opinion) a better sports car. (while they are both good vehicles - the brz just feels more like a sports car)

Wheres this done at cause my brz out here in NM a little above 4k ft elevation has little to no torque and has gotten blown out the water as soon as the wrx comes on boost. Even with other ppl in there car. Idk how much a stock 2013 wrx pushes compared to the new one but should be similar
This was in St. Louis. Also a stock 2013 WRX makes somewhere around 220ish whp. The VB makes around 250-260whp.
@@HeavyMetalWRX that’s interesting, then elevation probably has a pretty decent factor due to the brz being NA and a more significant power drop off compared to a wrx. Cause every time I’ve raced my friend out here the gap is a lot wider on me than what the wrx did to the brz at first

@@you_can_fuck_your_own_ass_69 didn’t take it passed 5k until I broke it in the first 5k miles. It’s not the motor the elevation here just hinders the car. After second gear the car just has no torque and the torque dip that was improved from the last gen feels like it wasn’t improved at all because of it. I’ve driven it in Missippi and back home in PA. Feels way better there but in NM it’s not just not it
@@Smitaye-Yea Elevation is the main factor. Denser air provides less oxygen. Naturally Aspirated engines are hit a lot harder then ones with forced induction.
I figured by now there would of been some supercharger and turbo kits.
I own an 18 WRX and a 23 BRZ but even that gen WRX feels faster to me. I’m really surprised by this test. I’ve never done a race between my cars to see which is faster. Between the 2 I’d say I have more fun in my BRZ but the WRX is a great everyday car especially when it snows.
A 23 BRZ is definitely faster than a 18 WRX. The stock tune on the VA WRX made it feel faster than it actually was.
@@HeavyMetalWRX that's turbo torque for you as you get a big whollop of torque suddenly as opposed to a more gradual build up with the brz.
Had my dealer kept any brz's stocked i would have gotten that instead of my wrx.
I've been watching the local BRZ stock within like a 100 mile radius and those things don't last more than a week or two on the lot before they get swooped up. It's insane. I'm talking in CA from Carlsbad and National City to Irvine and Ontario to Sherman Oaks.
The dealer I got my wrx from said they order maybe a total of 10-15 brz's a year that are costumer placed, my salesman said a lot of people ask about them though and usually go with the wrx cause it's already on the lot.

This would be relevant if the wrx didn’t have a turbo that takes two seconds of tuning to add a hundred hp and the awd will out handle the the oversteering brz by a mile with next to nothing in cost vs. one car to the other.
Glad the brz stepped up”,only some” in the weight and power department but it just can’t compete with a turbo and awd. And yes, a wrx and sti can drift if you know what you’re doing; this statement that keeps repeating that a awd can’t drift is nuts. Drive the car harder!!!

Went from a 16 focus st into a 22 brz and the brz is a lot quicker

Not everyone is a professional driver. The rolls allows us to eliminate the launch situation. Also not everyone is comfortable laughing their cars either. It may not be perfect but it's still a decent enough real world representation of what each cars can do.
I’ll throw my sti in anytime. The previous brz sucked, sorry. The new one (brz) looks great but glad they lowered weight and increased hp. Still don’t understand why brz isn’t turbo; I’m guessing a deal with Toyota. The brz with a turbo. Would be a blast.
This host must have never driven an sti or wrx because they have virtually no turbo lag do to the turbo connection to the innercooler vs a front mount.

That's because neither of these are my carS. I did switch to each car so it was fair. When you're in the real world you never know how many passengers there are. That's something to take into account.

These cars have already been compared with one passenger in races and the brz wins every time. Highway runs at 70 mph and up the wrx is faster due to more torque

Actually it'll smoke both the WRX and Sti. The new WRX is literally a hair behind the STI. If the BRZ is faster than the WRX then by that fact it's as fast as the STI at a minimum. Turbo brza are like 2900lb and 350whp.

Do people realize that these are very different cars? Not really a comparison here. The BRZ is much lighter. Of course it’s faster in a straight line from a roll. Run them from a dig and I guarantee the wrx walks it. Put them on a track and the wrx walks it. You’re also not factoring in that the BRZ is way more aerodynamic. so yes I’m not surprised that when you ran a brz against a wrx from a roll in a straight like the brz won.
They are actually quite different once you really start looking at them. The engine is pretty different being NA, different compression. Different transmission, different redline, different drivetrain . It's still fun to compare because they are competing for the performance slot in subarus lineup.
@@HeavyMetalWRX yes but imo it’s not a competition. They both have a place. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. They compared these two with every advantage given to the BRZ which isn’t fair. The wrx isn’t set up that way. They should race these two on a dirt road or around some turns and I guarantee you the outcome is much different
@@miker.4248 tbh the WRX isn't positioned as a car to actually be driven on the dirt. I'm not saying it CANT but stock ids setup for tarmac ( summer tires) and so that'd where 99.99% of the comparisons will go. Although, I will play extra devil's advocate here, a BRZ on dirt tires would be HIGHLY competitive as a rally car. I've seen it in action. It's quite good. I'm not saying they don't both have their own spaces to occupy, but if you're a single person looking for a fun car you do have both of these as an option so you really do have to sit down and think hard.

BRZ is not beating a stock STI . BRZ is slow , STi is decent fast
That'd what a lot of stj owners want to believe. If a VB keeps up with a STI and a BRZ beats a VB .....it's only obvious ..I know a lot of people don't want to hear it ( especially STI owners). It's ok my next test will be exactly that
last gen STI is also 650lbs heavier than BRZ..

From factory it revs to 6100. Tuned it revs to 6600. Just the way thevr designed it with boost.bit also has a different compression ratio so it makes sense.
Wrx is faster. Wrx 155 to 140 for the BRZ.
Well that doesn't really mean much, the WRX is limited to 147 but MAJORITY of people won't be running these cars to top gear at the limiter.
The BRZ is gonna need a turbo to race a sti
