This is our NEW series featuring Street Food Around the World in Taiwan. We miss travelling and we know you do too, so we are bringing on some travel adventures in Taiwan! Taiwan is blessed with tons of authentic street food from other countries and today we are taking you on a street food tour with HONG KONG’s best street food.
We start our Cantonese street food tour at a traditional morning market that we heard was the general location for a man with a Cheong Fun stall. We didn’t know the address, we only knew that he was open on Fridays. He makes his Cheong fun by pouring rice flour onto a metal tray. He adds your toppings like shrimp, egg and lettuce and puts it into the steam tower. Once cooked, he scrapes it into messy rolls. So delicious! (130 NTD / USD $4.34)
An important part of Hong Kong’s food culture is brunch with tea, or “Yum Cha”. Gathering around a table with family and friends, sharing tea and eating dim sum is what Yum Cha is all about. At this authentic restaurant, the dim sum carts are constantly circulating with fresh and hot steam baskets. We ordered the classics: har gao, shui mai, meatballs, char siu bao, egg tarts and MORE! Total meal cost 616 NTD (USD $20.56).
Roasted meats hanging in windows dot the streets of Hong Kong and you can find that here in Taiwan too! We went to a shop that is frequented by taxi drivers and is famous for their signature 3 Treasure Meats dish. We ordered roast duck, BBQ pork, roast chicken, sausages and siu yuk chopped up before your eyes! It was served alongside rice, and seasonal vegetables. It wasn’t the best version of Cantonese roast meats. The price of the meal came to 150 NTD (USD $5.01).
Afternoon tea in Hong Kong was influenced by the British, which means local cafes or Cha Chaan Teng serving sweet teas and even sweeter desserts. There are many authentic Cha Chaan Teng in Taiwan as well! We visited a spot that was decked out in Hong Kong memorabilia, including street signs, pop culture posters and iconic brandings like Carnation, Ovaltine and more. We ordered the Pineapple Bun, French Toast, Lemon Tea and HK Milk Tea. The total cost was 255 NTD (USD $8.51).
We wanted to finish the crazy day of eating Hong Kong food in Taiwan with a traditional dessert. We visited a Hong Kong dessert chain and ordered a Walnut and Sesame paste soup. It’s served hot and is not too sweet. The flavours and textures are exactly like the one we had in Hong Kong last year! The bowl cost 105 NTD (USD $3.50).

The steamed custard bun served in Plum Blossom is called 奶黃包 (nai3 huang2 bao1). It’s the traditional style of custard bun. If you are looking for the lava version custard bun, you need to look for 流沙包 (liu2 sha1 bao1) instead, which I believe is not served there. Btw, 甜品胃 (dessert stomach) in East district has desserts quite similar to 聰嫂 in Hong Kong. If you want some cold dessert, you should try it out. Longan & Melon sorbet are my favorite 😋 Also there’s a small shop called 双妹嘜 at 農安街 (nong2 an1 jie1) which has nice steamed milk dessert.

Hi Luke, for a future consideration, do a video on Taiwanese Bakeries. The Taiwanese has taken what really is an European basic food item to a whole different level. I would suggested that the Taiwanese bakers are very inventive as they are not bound by Western baking/bread traditions nor conventions so it’s a perfect illustration of West meets East.

We love dim sum places with the carts! It’s our favourite way of enjoying dim sum because you really never know what’s going to come out 🙂 Ahhh the roast meats looks a bit underwhelming and thanks for being honest Luke. Makes you really miss the real deal in HK doesn’t it? Lol wow that HK style cafe looks really good and screams ‘HK’ - we LOVE French toast done like that. Such a HK thing with the slad of butter and drenched with syrup 😋

There used to be a very popular Mongolian BBQ restaurant in Taipei (1960's). I wonder if it's still there. You go through the line choosing ingredients then at the end of the line, your bowl is cooked over a flaming wok heated by a wood fire in a 55 gallon drum. You should try to find one. You'll love it.

Dim sum is my favorite food! I could eat it everyday because I love the varieties that you could choose. I think tomorrow I will get some. Bit of a drive, but can't say no to dim sum.

One thing that’s missing in you both is expressing the taste of the food from the depths of your heart. Have observed that focus of the camera after the very first bite is for few seconds. That doesn’t help an ardent street food guy like me to understand ‘ Oh.. I so miss eating that’s dish right now !!’ But otherwise, I like all that’s you do for us. Many Many Thanks !!

hey Luke and Sabrina... i had an idea for a video or live stream.. i think it would be so cool if you got Mark Wiens.. Mike Chen.. Food Ranger and John Daub from Only in Japan .. but make a zoom call type of thing and discuss travel and food all over the world.. sorta a compare notes / highlights type of thing... it would be cool to see all the heavy hitters so to speak in one place .. just an idea :) keep up the great work .. love your content lots of love and stay safe
