New IP user. Have had it for 2 years. Used it last night for the first time. Used it for breakfast and now about to make brownies. These tips are awesome. I’m enjoying learning so much and I’m finding cooking fun again.
Hi, Flo - I've had my IP for 3 years now and love, love, love it. I'm quite comfortable using it, and really didn't think there was anything new I could learn about it ... until I discovered your channel just now, which proves that there's ALWAYS something new we can learn about our beloved IP! Thanks so much for sharing all the great tips! I have just subscribed. :)
Thank you, very useful tips, love watching your videos so much more useful than just reading recipes at first, got your cook book can’t wait to try new flavours take care both of you 🙏
Thanks for the tips! My tip is for frozen white castle burgers (since we don't have them in CA). My S.O. prefers them steamed so we use the steam function for 2-9 mins... Depending on how many you're cooking. We use the trivet, pour in a cup of water, and then lay down a sheet or 2 of parchment paper. Large enough to cover the trivet and come up the sides of the pot - no bigger than the top of the trivet handles. Steam and nom!
Thank you! So if you're making oatmeal or something similar and you're using the pot inside the pot method do you set the smaller pot directly on top of the instant pot or on top of the trivet?
Awesome you both are. Very informative, very glad there is someone like you who actually breaks it on and let us know what you can do and what you cannot do.
I will have to construct that sling thingy, very useful. My tip: when time is a factor and you can, use hot liquids to "speed" things up. Esp. if saute isn't a necessary function of preparing your dish. Keep doing all you are to spread the good news about the IP!
Flo, I didn't read all of the comments, so I don't know if anyone is ahead of me on this, but I just shared the link to this video with the Instant Pot Community group on Facebook. I remain a big fan of your videos and I'm attempting to spread the word.
Great tips. Thanks for sharing. I've had my 8 quart Cosori instant pot a few months and I think it's my favorite kitchen too ever..use it every day for so many things!
After using the Instant Pot for about 3 years, I’ve learned a thing or two to make cooking with it a little easier. Hope you enjoy these tips! Comment below if you have other tricks you’d like to share!
Hello Flo I enjoy seeing how you and your husband like making videos together. Makes me happy to see happy people like you guys. A challenge to you. I have used a traditional pressure cooker for years. It has worked well for our household but is the Insta Pot really better? I don’t have an Insta Pot but I would like to see you cook/compare cooking methods between the two. Is the traditional-method superior or is the new Insta Pot the way to go? Could you please give us a demo between cooking, for example, a pot roast between a traditional pressure cooker and the newest Insta Pot? Please point out all the differences. How much better is the Insta Pot or is it really better? Looking forward to your findings. Thanks much.
Awesome thank you somuch MS FloLum❣️ love the DIY grips for the basket thing, I have just the one that came with my Insta-pot which does not have any handles , but I didn’t know about the pip . Which is great because it’s just my husband and I. I love steel cut oats too this will make it quicker 🤗❣️💖❣️ Thank you for sharing ❣️ I just received my insta-pot for “Mother’s Day “ love love it for sure😊👍🏻
I have an electric tea kettle that I use for cooking (as well as tea). I use it plain for the InstantPot or I when I add Better Than Bouillon for broth. I find it helps with the Pot coming to pressure. I use the kettle for so much. It is even used when washing the lid out.
I also use the "slow - quick release" method, but I place the pot under the exhaust vent on a cookie sheet to keep the pot level. I then cover the steam release spout with a kitchen towel to keep the moisture and water droplets localized and to soak up the heaviest release . I leave the exhaust fan running until the steam release is finished to vent most of the moisture. Great tips for users. Thanks.
I like this, I find the handles take up too much precious space anyway, this is an exciting learning process and I love the sharing by all ... thanx for making this video!
thanks for this, I love the dowel of the wooden spoon to release pressure, it taught me to not be afraid of my Instant Pot,. Also, your Pho recipe is now a go-to in our house. Can you please do a video using frozen solid chicken? (as I so rarely remember that dinner is important)? I have used my IP to cook it but I imagine you have more creative ideas other than Pho!
Thank you so much for sharing. Esp. the P.I.P. it is so logical, yet I have never done this yet! A believer in one pot dinners, this is totally going to help matters.
Hi Flo and Dude! You both have gotten me over being scared of my Instant Pot and now having fun finding out what deliscious meals it can make. I have the 8 quart, so maybe my trivet has longer handles. I wear my silocone oven mits, grab the base of a wooden spoon and put the dowel end through both handles. With one hand on the middle of the spoon I lift the inner pot high enough until I can grab the top of my pot in pot bowl. Works for me. Thanks again and keep those videos coming! HPE Teacher
Hi Flo! Love your recipes and tips! I've subscribed to your channel and watched a bunch of your videos and I'm learning alot. I have an XL Pressure Cooker but it's the same size as your Instant Pot. 👍💙
Thank you :) I thought I was doing something wrong when it would spew all over the place while doing QR. Glad to know I can just do a slow quick release.
Great channel. You show us the good and the bad which makes you very honest and real. My wife was anti-IP when I bought the 8 quart last year until she found out how fast it cooks beets, beans, chicken, turkey, .... Now she likes the IP except she still uses her rice cooker for forbidden rice. Cooking butter chicken tonight in the IP. Trying to figure out how I can sneak in a Philips air fryer next without steam coming out of her ears.
After reading the wirecutter review on airfryers it looks like we're getting a breville smart oven air instead. She does a lot of dehydration so I guess it makes sense to buy one appliance that does multiple things (like the IP).
Hi Flo, I have a tip to minimize the steam (or any possible spewing). After I open the quick release valve, I gently place a damp dishcloth over the valve to collect the steam. This also minimizes the loud hissing sounds that frighten my dogs and make them run for the hills (hahaha).
Another very good video Flo and Dude. Appreciated the helpful tips. Yes, it's too bad that trivet doesn't come with tabs to more easily grab and lift the trivet out...Your idea with the aluminum foil is a good one. I do like those little red silicone grippers that are sold, they make it a bit easier for grabbing the trivet and for holding the pot when stirring (because it spins). The silicon grippers aren't as cumbersome as oven mitts. Thanks for mentioning the PIP method....I forget about doing that.
Love all the ideas, but really liked the tip about using the wooden spoon handle to bleed off the pressure, so simple yet so elegant! Thanks for great video 😊
Hi. Love the videos. Just a little comment that may help. Water under pressure is hotter than water boiled in an open pan, so less time and energy is used to achieve the same result. I love my 'Pot'. Bye !
Those steel pots (set of 4 nesting bowls) were purchased about 20 years ago from Costco so I don’t have a link. I do use glass bowls sometimes. I personally have not had a problem with them.
For release of something I know will foam up - like pasta - I do a stepped quick release. So release for a count of 10, seal for count of 10 and so on. You can use the heartbeat indicator in the timer to count the seconds. After the initial surge of pressure eases off, you can increase the release to 20 seconds open/10 shut. It just gives whatever is inside foaming up chance to subside.
It’s one of a set of 4 nested stainless steel bowls that I picked up from Costco several years ago. Unfortunately, I haven’t found anything similar to recommend.
Just got the IP Ultra 6QT. Yesterday, tried making oat groats and it came out a watery mess 😔 think I used to much water. Will you PLEASE make a video on making oat groats in the IP. Thank you for these great videos!
Wait... did I see a Norwex silicone lid on one of your dishes in this video? Do you have a video where you talk about using those when cooking in the Instant Pot? Great hack ideas. I love the tin foil handles and will start doing that promptly.
how many times do you fold the aluminum foil handles? I tried and mine ripped so I'm assuming they were too thin? great tips!! I am going to try the preheating method one for sure!!!
i'm a total novice so these tips are greatly appreciated; in particular, thanks for preventing me from spraying stuff all over my kitchen when i use the quick release! ha! ha!
Rand U hi I’m not sure I understand the quick release and when and why I would use it. So far I’ve waited until the toggle has come up before I open the pot?
I'm no expert but I don't think it matters much; quick release if you want access to the food sooner. Sometimes, I'll let it release slowly on it's own (I do nothing) because I want it to simmer longer.
Buy an electric water pot ot tea pot. it just takes a couple minutes to heat water and add to instant pot and then there is no wait time for water to heat up in the instant pot. works great and time saver.
Do you have a good recommendation for a stainless steel bowl (like the one you have in the pic)? I have the 8QT instant pot and would like to get some bowls for pot in pot :) Would be happy to use referral links to kick money your way!
I bought these bowls at Costco several years ago. They came in 4 sizes nested together. Really great quality. I wish I could refer you but I would hate for you to get something of lesser quality! If I come across something, I will definitely add it to my Amazon shop list. Thanks for the support!
I am trying to decide between the Aroma rice cooker and the Instant Pot. What do you think? Would it be fine to just have the Aroma or would the Instant Pot be the way to go? That Aroma delayed time and keep warm features seem great. I am thinking it makes it basically a slow cooker. And the simmer button might be useful to start meat item off for more flavor. I am wondering if the Instant Pot gives me much more than the Aroma. Maybe it just offers more buttons for automatic settings.
Sorry... I am not familiar with the Aroma rice cooker. But I did buy the Instant Pot initially to replace my rice cooker. I use it almost everyday for rice and I can also do so much more with it. I also ever only use one or two buttons. You may want to check out some of my recipes to see what is possible. Hope that helps.
I bought those stainless steel bowls from Costco several years ago. If I find something similar, I will add it to my Amazon list: amazon.com/shop/flolum
I read a suggestion several months ago to use a 3-inch PVC elbow to direct the steam and any froth away from you. They are available in the plumbing section of a hardware/building supply store. I use one and it is a handy accessory. So far I haven't had any froth as I am cooking for just me.
NEW Instant Pot DON'T Tips video! ua-cam.com/video/gHxLRvw4OoI/v-deo.html
When I do quick release, I put a damp dish cloth over the vent so that water vapour doesn't splash all over.

why would anyone thumbs down? such gentle teaching, helpful and kind. Geez!
New IP user. Have had it for 2 years. Used it last night for the first time. Used it for breakfast and now about to make brownies. These tips are awesome. I’m enjoying learning so much and I’m finding cooking fun again.

Great tips!!! I like the foil handles and pot in pot cooking! Thank you for sharing☺️
The foil is my favorite hint too! Very sensible!
you speak very clearly, thank you
Thank you!
So if you're making oatmeal or something similar and you're using the pot inside the pot method do you set the smaller pot directly on top of the instant pot or on top of the trivet?
Love all of your recipes, the tips, and the hair!
Flo, you and Dude are my top UA-cam video celebs. Your recipies save me time and time again and I'm grateful to you both. Randy, Alhambra, CA.
Thanks Flo for the tips! Your haircut looks great!

That was really helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
Your videos have been a great resource. Thank you for your efforts. Pot-on!
Great idea's to keep from getting burned, and making clean up easier. Thank you
Hi Flo!! Thanks for the tips!!

Great info! Thank you for sharing with us!
Thanks for the handle tip.
Wonderful tips! Thank you!
That’s a clever idea using the foil to pull it up. Thanks for the tips.

Excellent tips..........thank you!
You can also turn your trivet upside down, resting on the handles, so that you have room for larger food below and a shallow dish on top.
I like this, I find the handles take up too much precious space anyway, this is an exciting learning process and I love the sharing by all ... thanx for making this video!
Beckcordell Cordell great idea!! 🤗

😂😂😂 Good luck with that!
Just got my Philips air fryer this weekend & I’m in love!! It’s not the digital one but works great!
After reading the wirecutter review on airfryers it looks like we're getting a breville smart oven air instead. She does a lot of dehydration so I guess it makes sense to buy one appliance that does multiple things (like the IP).
Always good to get your wife on your side! 😉
Thanks for the tips Flo.
New to instant pot. Great video thanks for the tips
Thank you! Love my pressure cooker!
Hi Flo, I have a tip to minimize the steam (or any possible spewing). After I open the quick release valve, I gently place a damp dishcloth over the valve to collect the steam. This also minimizes the loud hissing sounds that frighten my dogs and make them run for the hills (hahaha).
I’ve read that it is unsafe to do that and it may void your warranty. You may want to look into that.
very useful ideas, especially the preheat
You are so stinking cute! Can't wait to use some of your tips (anxiously awaiting for my Instant Pot to arrive).
Can you use crock pot bags or oven bags with the instant pot?
like the slow or semi-quick release and full release. Thanks.
Thank you for the hacks & tips. I’m a new subscriber too.
Thx great tips!
The foil sling is genius.
As Always ... Excellent
Nice job Flo. Always enjoy your videos! 😗😗😗

PIP is great for steaming.
Love all the ideas, but really liked the tip about using the wooden spoon handle to bleed off the pressure, so simple yet so elegant! Thanks for great video 😊
What’s PIP?
Hi. Love the videos. Just a little comment that may help. Water under pressure is hotter than water boiled in an open pan, so less time and energy is used to achieve the same result. I love my 'Pot'. Bye !
I really like the controlled pressure release method you show. Makes a lot more sense than babysitting bursts of quick release :)
Hi Flo, I like the pot you use inside instant pot? Can you share the link to buy one? Also can I use glass container instead? Thank you in advance
Those steel pots (set of 4 nesting bowls) were purchased about 20 years ago from Costco so I don’t have a link. I do use glass bowls sometimes. I personally have not had a problem with them.
Your video and audio are great quality. Sets you apart from a lot of the other IP instructors. Thanks for that!

what is the heartbeat indicator?
If you look at the timer on the front, there is a little red dot that flashes on and off to mark the seconds.
thanx i thought that might be the case, not that familiar yet. Will pay more attention next time around, still newbie.
I never read the instructions, I can t be bothered (😛) but I love watching you cooking with the Instant Pot!!! Thank Flo ❤️❤️❤️
I clicked "like" and "subscribe". Thanks for the tips! (PS- I think your camera man is in love with you ;)
I really enjoyed your video. Where did you get the aluminum bowl from?
It’s one of a set of 4 nested stainless steel bowls that I picked up from Costco several years ago. Unfortunately, I haven’t found anything similar to recommend.
I am loving your videos, Thank you so much. My first instapot wasn't called that It was simply electric pressure cooker.
Instant Pot is the brand name. Yes... they are all electric pressure cookers.
Just got the IP Ultra 6QT. Yesterday, tried making oat groats and it came out a watery mess 😔 think I used to much water. Will you PLEASE make a video on making oat groats in the IP. Thank you for these great videos!
Is that like steel cut oats? Will this help? ua-cam.com/video/q2R_GR_Pa44/v-deo.html

Many thanks. I learned something today :-)
Hi there, do you know where I can find a little pot like the one you used in this video for the pot in pot? Thank you
I picked up these pots at Costco several years ago. If I find something similar, I will add it to my Amazon shop: www.amazon.com/shop/flolum
Good info esp the trivet
hi Flo a newbie here just subscribed...going to try your Thai Curr.y last night made Moracon Chickpea stew, came out awesome!
Wonderful! Thanks so much! :)
Wait... did I see a Norwex silicone lid on one of your dishes in this video? Do you have a video where you talk about using those when cooking in the Instant Pot? Great hack ideas. I love the tin foil handles and will start doing that promptly.
I ❤️ Norwex! But, no videos on them specifically. They show up every now and again in my vids.
If I have an 8 quart IP should I buy the 6 quart pot for pot-in-pot cooking to allow space around inside pot?
I haven't tried fitting my 6qt liner into my 8qt but I don't imagine you need to do that. Just use any stainless steel pot or heatproof dish.
Great hair cut you look 10 years younger love your Chanel and your food you’re a beautiful lady and cook too keep up the good work
I have an instant thank you for sharing how to you it Properly
where did you get the bowl with in bowl to fit
how many times do you fold the aluminum foil handles? I tried and mine ripped so I'm assuming they were too thin?
great tips!! I am going to try the preheating method one for sure!!!
I used heavy duty aluminum foil. I guess fold enough times to make sure it doesn’t rip. LOL Sorry... I am not helpful. 🙁
i'm a total novice so these tips are greatly appreciated; in particular, thanks for preventing me from spraying stuff all over my kitchen when i use the quick release! ha!
Hi,tks for your info, just a small doubt can Indian cooking be done on this pot like, chicken curry, biryani.tks in advance
I make a lot of different curries in the IP and they turn out well. My understanding is that a lot of Indian cooking is done in pressure cookers.

I also ever only use one or two buttons. You may want to check out some of my recipes to see what is possible. Hope that helps.
Hi Flo. Enjoy your channel. Where did you buy the inner pot from? Is it a insta pot brand pot? Thanks.
I bought those stainless steel bowls from Costco several years ago. If I find something similar, I will add it to my Amazon list: amazon.com/shop/flolum
Thank you! When I release pressure I put a little towel on top to avoid steam wetten my Cupboards.
They say it’s not safe to do that and it might void your warranty. You might want to look into that.
I read a suggestion several months ago to use a 3-inch PVC elbow to direct the steam and any froth away from you. They are available in the plumbing section of a hardware/building supply store. I use one and it is a handy accessory. So far I haven't had any froth as I am cooking for just me.
