After 20 reviews or more you are the first one who is showing real pictures! Thank you for that!!!! Isn't not the reason why we want to have such great lenses in our gears? No test sheet pics and no spec repetition, that's what we love!
I know what you mean, BUT, showing 'real' pictures for us to view on UA-cam can hardly give one an estimate of the quality of any lens. Real pictures are indeed nice but the problem is they also mix emotion into the equation; hardly an objective way to assess a lens, or any other piece of photographic equipment for that matter. Many a time I've 'swooned' at seeing a picture that touches my 'soul', only to discover that it was taken with a 'garbage' camera/lens combination. So how does that help to evaluate the 'quality' of a lens. I do like Ted's reviews, but I have the feeling that he could, as they used to say, "sell igloos to the Eskimos".
Right off the bat, I notice the new studio and great lighting. Your videos have always been very nice to watch, but you just kicked it up a notch, or 2!! And the video itself is top notch, as always. Thanks Ted!
Most of these companies have embargos on when videos like these can be released. They will usually all release at the same time since that’s when they are allowed to be released. No sense in releasing late.
get the 1.8 version at a fraction of the cost. Smaller, lighter, and almost as good. I can almost guarantee if you put two pictures side by side and asked 100 peopole to tell you which was which. 95% wouldn't have a clue.
Hey Ted, a couple of years ago you named the Sony 35mm F1.8 as one of your lenses of the year. This is definitely a different kind of lens... but intrigued to know whether which you would personally own (I can remember if you own the F1.8 already).
You made me want to sell my olympus (mft) 17mm f1.2 and get this. But I am actually more impressed with the lens you are using for the filming of this video segment. Was it also a Sony?
Very good review! Third time watching and thanks for making this. And I agree it would be fantastic if SONY makes a 50 1.4 GM in this similar size and quality.
I agree regarding wanting a possible 50mm GM in the same compact format. I currently own the Sony 50 f1.4 ZA, which is top notch but also super heavy and a little sluggish to focus (it’s also older than the entire GM line). The new GM lenses seem to be edging those top Sony Zeiss lenses into obsolescence, both quality and price-wise.
Love the format of this lens and the 24 1.4. Per your last comment, the 50 1.4 by Zeiss is an amazing lens. Yes, would be even better in this format but would be very hard to beat optically.
Indeed, we all are waiting for the 50 1.4 GM, Planar is indeed fantastic, but a reduction on size and weight will make the lens much more attractive, a lens you can just travel with it , go everywhere...
Hi Ted, Have you heard about the Holy Trinity for Zoom Lenses? Yes, Right! The 12-24GM, 24-70GM, & the 70-200GM. But have you heard about the Holy Trinity for Prime Lens? No, Right. I hadn't either until about a month ago when I found a reference to it. This Trinity of Lenses are the 35mm, 50mm, & 85mm. The idea is that to shoot all prime lenses you don't have to own every focal lenth, just these three. Let me know what you think. Talk to you Later, Mathew
My Sony Zeiss 35mm 1.4 is SOLD. My Sony 35mm 1.4 GM is on Pre-order. I believe Sony will do a version 2 of the 85mm 1.4 and then I'll be selling to purchase again.
Hola! . ¿Qué me recomendas?
Watches this video in May 2021, hearing what you said about how a 50mm f1.4 GM would be a great addition. Well I guess Sony made you happy then with the 50mm f1.2 GM xD
What’s better for video? 24 or 35? Especially when filming product reviews close up? I want as little blur as possible except for background of course. Something I can bring the item up close with. No distortion and also fast autofocus so I don’t have to keep putting the object in focus or worrying about only certain parts of the object in focus. Thank you in advance! Would also use for live streaming and on the side? Prob photos cuz I’m gonna love my new Sony A7C
Hi Dr. Ted, I’m trying to figure out why my Sony raw files seem to read so much better than my R5 files at greater than 100% in Capture One. Bit depth? Focus? Sensor? Software? Sony+batis super sharp up to several hundred percent, R5(28-70) sharpness seems to drop off: super sharp at 100% then ugly higher than that. Not a scientific test, just my initial impressions. Thx if you have thoughts on this.
@Pete Melon many thanks for your thoughts Pete, much appreciated. I’ll continue to check all my settings and work on my focusing. It’s not a huge issue at all. The R5 eye AF is incredibly good, my impression is Sony may still have a better overall focusing system, and raw file.
@Pete Melon agreed, thank you for your perspective Pete. Manual focus is more fun when feasible depending on the type of shooting. I do miss optical and darkroom activities, though digital definitely provides some cool new capabilities too. It’s faster that’s for sure.
How comparable would this lens be to the Fuji 50mm f1.0? The fuji hasn't blown people away but this Sony looks next level. I'm seriously thinking about moving over to Sony from Fuji.
I hope they come out with a 50mm GM to truly win the hearts of photographers. The 50mm Planar is a excellent lens optically I own it but the form factor and auto focus leaves a lot to be desired. As they just came out with the 35mm 1.8 which is good, that many people bought including me. I think they would have been better off releasing a 50mm GM as to me at least that is a bigger hole in there line up.
Does this guy ever take a bad photograph? Maybe it's the lens, I knew photography was all about the gear! Just need to figure out how to jam this thing on my G9.
No, it is not Zeiss glass, it is either Sony (former Minolta), Cosina or Tamron that makes Sony lenses, Sony owns a part of Tamron. Cosina makes the Zeiss-Sony lenses but the lens constructions in Zeiss-Sony lenses are designed by Zeiss or just given permission to use the Zeiss badge for cool cash or a contract :)
I have to compliment you on the quality of the photography throughout the video.
And it’s not just the equipment used it’s the user.

Yes I'm keen for the 50mm GM - hopefully it's up next!
Le prochain GM prévu est le 16/1.8
hope so too, would be a great match with 24mmGM,,,, I wonder if it will keep 67mm filter thread
Right off the bat, I notice the new studio and great lighting. Your videos have always been very nice to watch, but you just kicked it up a notch, or 2!! And the video itself is top notch, as always. Thanks Ted!
Love my ZA 35 but this is very intriguing. The ficus hold button being a game changer.
Great reviews. You didn't speak about breathing issues?
I think you are spot on about a 50mm. Wouldn't be surprised if it's f/1.2.
Spot on prediction
It’s great that Sony is not sponsoring it but Jared, Tony, Kai and you came out with it at the same time along with a ton of others.
Most of these companies have embargos on when videos like these can be released. They will usually all release at the same time since that’s when they are allowed to be released. No sense in releasing late.
Never clicked so fast, watching these all day today 😂 as I’ve been contemplating getting a 35 mm lens for street/ travel.
Get a used "old" 35mm 1.4 and be happy. The price difference is HUGE and the gain is minimal....
get the 1.8 version at a fraction of the cost. Smaller, lighter, and almost as good. I can almost guarantee if you put two pictures side by side and asked 100 peopole to tell you which was which. 95% wouldn't have a clue.
For street/travel, I would be tempted to just weld a Voigtlander Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5 P II to my camera and never take it off.
Go for it, perfect timing.
Same I’m heading to Best Buy to preorder today because I heard the 24 sold like hot cakes and you couldn’t get your hands on it until a year later😂😒
I love my 24mm f/1.4 GM. But I would love to give this new 35mm a try one day! Thanks for the review Ted.
I'm also definitely getting it and really hope they make a GM-50
@@johnadams3038 Yes! I have been waiting on a 50mm GM or at least a new 50mm from Sony

The mirrorless competition is getting really fierce on the lens front as well. Impressive lens!

Yeah I would to see a 50 mm GM Prime as well to get some great 1:1 range as well.
You made me want to sell my olympus (mft) 17mm f1.2 and get this. But I am actually more impressed with the lens you are using for the filming of this video segment. Was it also a Sony?
So you guys out there. If you had 24mm GM - 24-70mm GM and 85mm GM , you try to add this fella ? Or eliminate one firstly ?
zoom is too useful, 24GM is a keeper, wait for 50mmGM it will definitely be lighter than the 85mmGM
Very good review! Third time watching and thanks for making this. And I agree it would be fantastic if SONY makes a 50 1.4 GM in this similar size and quality.
sony enthusiasts know how long we've been waiting for this lens lol
I almost watched all the videos regarding this lens before watching yours. Got to know a few new things about this lens. Subscribed
It's great having so many videos about this lens. I can afford one so I'm feeling like those people who watch videos of games instead of playing them.
Impressive. Helpful cinema clip. Your new Ateliér appears decidedly sweet.

Excellent review, as always. Congratulations on your new studio!
Hi did you review the Sigma 35 DG DN?
GMONEY
I was exhilarated to hear that review. Thank you again, for your insight and giving more credence to mirrorless (still sticking with DSLR).
Great review. I have and love the 24mm and would love to see a 50mm 1.4, too.
same here, yeah 50mm1.4GM is overdue 🙏

Thanks. Did you look at focus breathing in video ?
As always, great video. I think I’ll purchase when it’s out. This will probably finish out my kit.
If you had to choose between the 24mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 which one would you choose for yourself?
35mm paires good with 85mm... And 24mm with 50mm... I hope they release a 50mm GM soon 🤞
Indeed, we all are waiting for the 50 1.4 GM, Planar is indeed fantastic, but a reduction on size and weight will make the lens much more attractive, a lens you can just travel with it , go everywhere...
agree, 67mm filter thread would be ideal 🙏
I have the SONY FE 35MM F/1.4 ZA ZEISS DISTAGON T* LENS worth upgrading and why ?
So hows the micro contrast?
What's a good lens that captures everything from closeup and to infinty for filming? Non focus breathing..
Any issues with focus breathing for video applications?
Could you review the FE 50mm F1.4 Sony Zeiss? I would love to hear your opinion on that lens
Best review of this lens I've seen!
I keep on seeing this video on this 35mm lens and I keep on thinking to myself why not buy a 24mm GM is cost about the same and just crop in?
Does anyone know what day it’s released?
Could you compare it to the Sigma 35mm f1.2?
Just ordered this lens! Excited to see what I can do with it!

I'm itching for Sony or Sigma to come out with a nice sized 50mm 1.4. I totally agree with you.
Sigma is getting close with 65mmf2.0
I would love to get a hands on this baby! Thanks for the video.

Could you say something about the recently published DXO Marks' numbers on Sony A7S III ? They are strikingly bad. Thanx
Exciting. The images looked stunning. Is Sony over the technically flawed phase in its march to the front of the pack I wonder?
Splendid!
I've bought this lens.
Thank you.
Heyy, I'm looking to buy either this one or the 24mm but I'm not sure which one to get. Anything I should consider except for the focal lenght?
How much this lens is vignetting? I'm always curious how e mount lenses handle this.
It's so easily corrected in post, doesn't really matter. I'd rather they correct elsewhere.
Great video as usual.
Is there anyway you can turn your videos into podcasts as well? Especially the one focused on historical photographers.
I think it's funny that this lens is considered compact by many. My Leica Sumicron and the adapter for my Alpha 9 are only half the size. ;-)

quick question Ted. What aperture was the shot you used for checking field curvature done with?
Wide open. F/1.4
and also, how close was the camera to the ground?
Such a solid lens
Can’t wait for that 50mm 1.4..if they play their cards right, may be this Summer... then again it’s a long Shot..lol

Nice photos. I want one.
Are the skin tones still green? That’s the part that kills me about their stuff... If it weren’t, I would buy it without issue.
Another excellent video, thank you!
Nice , but I have to be honest , I have the Rokinon 35mm 1.4 for $350 dollars (new ! the guy didn’t know what he had) and it works wonders .
I have one too. But I'm afraid of AF problems. Sometimes it freezes and I have to restart the camera. Besides that, great image quality and bokeh.
