What a great story of this amazing couple and their beautiful life on board the boat they built themselves with a lifetime of stories and memories.❤ This is rare indeed anymore, to build a boat like this and be full in life with the bare necessities. What a glorious and fulfilling life to just be content and happy. Well done Bruce and Jan for living your lives differently and thank you for sharing your story.
Love how they seem so contented. There must be something to be said for keeping it simple. I guess they have seacocks for the engine, although Bruce said it was or is an aircooled engine.
although I understand why newer materials make a lot more sense for boats (better when it comes to price, weight, strength, maintenance,...) you simply cannot have such stories behind the origin of your fiberglass/steel/... like this boat has. feels like every plank has a story, mount helen survivor wood, a tree from your yard, dinghy from the same wood as bob dylan's schooner,... and on top of that, he built it himself. that's a lot of personality for a single boat :p
Wooden boats always seem larger, more stable & seaworthy, as if the water serves as the wood's second home. He built it for 6,000 usd in 1983. Well, you can buy a 50-year old fiberglass boat in Spain for E5,500 (cad 7,300). Buy why sail a boat made of an unnatural material pressed out of a mould? I'd love to find a 50-year old wooden boat for under 10k usd here in Thailand...
UA-cam bring up your video after I watched the documentory film of Paul Erling Johnson

I hope to be half that sharp at that age. Beautiful couple.
Uhhhh…. Thanks?
Fantastic. I wish I could swap cold and wet Scotland for a trip with them. I wish them good health for many more years of sailing.

A well maintained wooden boat will outlast any other material.
Great!

How can I learn more about how you built this lil beauty
Wooden Boat Forum, a thread called “ Building my Venus Ketch”.
Time to build a wee-vee Bruce! What timber did you use below, it has really mellowed.
Second growth fir is what we mostly see, and a few white pine pallets!

leuk lekker spartaans. wat kan het leven simpel zijn, zonder alle must have ballast hey.
Didn’t know a boat could be made without ballast??? Am I too gullible?
She has a five ton bolt on ballast keel
Build a boat you become a boat builder, buy a sailboat and become a sailor, a better choice
No, You become a sailor by sailing.
