I don't know about other religion, but in Islam, they read and try to understand best to their ability what was the intention when God (in case of Quran) and Prophet S.A.W (in case of Hadith) when it was written. Scholars understand that whatever Allah say is always right and Allah knows the best, also, Allah said it himself in Quran that Prophet S.A.W was the best man, husband, father, etc. So listening to authentic Hadith is obvious. So the Scholars of Islam try to decode the book of Quran and book of Hadith without distorting anything.
