    Nice find, man. I've done handle bending a couple times, and the method I saw once from this broadaxe handle maker was just boiling the handle in hot water and then setting it in a jig

      Thank you and thank you so much for watching !! I’ve been researching videos and I believe I may have came across a similar or the same video. The process doesn’t seem to be to bad, I can’t wait to try !! 👍

    Finding something in the wild is 100x better than shopping online. Plus the local history of that piece makes it even more special !

    Awesome! Those old hewing heads are awesome!
    I make heads razor sharp, then tape the bit so I can’t cut myself during the hang (learned that one the hard way haha)

      Thanks man !! Yeah man that’s a good idea too, I guess I could always use cardboard as well 🤙 .. man I’ve probably been cut more hanging and sharpening an axe vs actually using one 😂

    I’m the same I love old axes that are from local to me. I have somr Blodgett, Amoskeag ax co, and Underhill broad axes all local to me in NH among a bunch of others. Pa seems to have had sone nice pre civil war axes I’ve seen. Cool stuff

    Very cool find man. I've got an old broad axe in my collection also. It has a handle very similar to yours. I believe many of them utilized a different wedging system. Rather than a tongue split with a kerf, it was a solid tongue with a wedge that went on the side. I remember reading on the forums that this was to allow the handle to be swapped to the other side, making it left or right handed depending on how you were working the log. Looking forward to the next part of the series, great job always 👍

      Thank you so much man !!! Heck yeah that’s awesome 🤙 have you ever tried to use it yet ? Huh that’s interesting, I like that idea. I don’t know too much about these kind of axes, but I’m slowly learning. Having a handle that’s able to be switched to the opposite side is a great idea. I just checked the eye on mine and it doesn’t seem to be reversible, it has a tapered eye like an axe. Thank you so much again, can’t wait to get out and use this thing 🤙

      @940Joey I haven't used it yet but would love to at some point. It's got a stamp but I haven't been able to figure out the maker yet. I've got a couple of broad hatchets that I use occasionally but haven't had the right project for the big one yet. But like yours I need to get mine wedged before I get it swinging.

    Is that a Lamaca I see on your right? Those looks like excellent tools. Also, that broad axe is gorgeous. And that handle was made by somebody who really knew what they were doing. Looks like it even has the old school removable wedges to flip the bevel. I might bug you for some pictures to see if I can make one like it if that's ok!

    what the reason for the curved handle? im sure that axe had a very specific use in log home construction

    • @rogerrobinson4446
      @rogerrobinson4446 Рік тому +1

      To prevent you from "barking" your knuckles on the work when you swing it.

    • @940joey2
      @940joey2  Рік тому

      Thank you both so much for watching !!! Exactly correct, the handles on these axes are offset to prevent your hand from coming in contact with the log you’re hewing. I’ll demonstrate this more in-depth when I use the axe 👍
