If you're on a private server keep in mind that it's just server wide, but only the top 3. I'm not sure if that's harder or not since I never won back in the day. Also unsure of the rewards(I think it's everything but the heirloom?)
it's currently bugged tho since it is supposed to be 15 per realm (apparently) and currently is 1 and sometimes 2. Lucky me i got it when it was super bugged and if you completed it before it ended timewise u got it :D

To this day, getting this achievement is a pain in the ass. There are several reasons for it: 1 - The event is cross-realm. Different timezones affect your chances to place first/second due to how unevenly the timer starts. You might be there casually fishing and the event goes live, you might be waiting for it to trigger and it might do so a few minutes later, catching you off guard. It's never certain, that's for sure. 2 - Sometimes, Riggle Bassbait won't even announce the event beggining properly. I've even witnessed him appearing and immediately yelling that the event is over, WHEN IT WAS JUST BEGGINING/SUPPOSED TO BEGIN. It goes as far as being able to catch the speckled tastyfish for a good 2 hours but him refusing to accept it because it's already "over". 3 - Other people, and the RNG involving getting the tastyfish. This is quite obvious, as it's expected that an event like this (even if the damn thing has been running for more than a decade) still attracts players. The issue here is that there's no safe spot, no easy going. You might spot a few fishing ponds with just one-two fish, or get a single one that drops up to 7. Yes, I mean 7. So again, absolute RNG. 4 - The fishing skill. That's the worst of it all. It doesn't even matter if you're 300, 1, or 132. The entire thing is RNG meaning you may spend a lot of time trying to max out a skill that won't even have an effect on your final results. For a game supposed to be based on how much your level, stats and skill matters, RNG has taken the cake once again in this one. Then again, not like it isn't happening with corruption... And the list could go on. So, here's my take on it: just try it every once in a while until you get lucky. It's so random that it won't make a difference in the end, so hope for the best and stay patient until you make it.
you didn't mention the most important trick -- have your friend run around on a big mount and block the fishing bobs for other players. that's how I won it back in the day.
+TrueScandinavia I did it on almost empty server, did it the 1st time and won it the same day for the 1st time If i can suggest rolling a Druid cause flying is a huge + to win this Don't stress on fishing level i was like 75 and it still works
1. Create Highmountain Druid trial account in a RP server a couple of days prior to Sunday. 2. Train fishing and get out of starting zone and go to Zangarmarsh. Fish the wreckage pool until you get a track fishing book. 3. Set hearth to Booty Bay inn, and park your trial Highmountain Druid by one of the coast. 4. Fish.
I missed first place by taking too long to pick a reward once. I ended up getting first later but I feel it was a bit of a cheat. Daylight saving kicked in or something and everyone else showed up an hour late. Instead of hundreds competing it was like 8 according to /who.
Me too.I got it 45 odd minutes after the start.I had to hang me washing out so I gave up.Came back kept fishing hearthed and I was first.It was a pvp server too I was a ghost when I came back.

When it first came out, I was enamored with the trinket because I absolutely HATED the slowdown and breath limit of swimming in vanilla. So I dedicated my Sundays to the fishing tournament. Back then, only the first person on the server to turn in 40 fish got the rewards, and the event was over the second they turned it in. It was HARD. I won it on the Hyjal server on the 4th or 5th week after it came out. Wonder if my characters are still saved somewhere in the labyrinth of blizzard's servers...
I just won using your strat of bringing a friend to fake cast and scout out pools for me. Would not have won without it. People leaving me to fish in a pool all by myself because of it. I BARELY won. I was the 50th person to turn in, he shouted after I turned in. Thanks much man~
Also the boots of the bay have a faster cast than basic hearthstone dose as it works with haste so, if your friend, or you, has a hero buff, it will cut out a few sec from the hearth cast witch is fantastic. I picked these up so I can hearth faster next time to try and win the ring. And because I wanted the +15 fishing on them.
Solo it. You can win this by yourself. I did it twice. Had to lose a bunch of times first until I found a routine that worked for me, but it's doable by yourself. Not that hard. Just needs patience and persistence.

Just an fyi I did the stv contest 4-28-2019 and it's now the first 50 people but the high mountain passive waste not want not proc for tasty fish. So a high mountain druid is op.
One tip I saw somewhere else is that try to find a low level populated PVE server, usually ones located in South America. Sure you gotta make another toon, but it can be enough to just have the chaperone achievement mount and fishing profession at level 25 to win!
Some good tips here! I brought a few of my best pvp friends who just killed everyone trying to fish also had an alliance friend killing horde competition, good to have friends.. Worked like a charm.

I did this event a few times back at 60 with a buddy. One of us would indeed scout out schools for the fishing player. We usually fished on the western coast off Gurubashi Arena. No achievments or titles back then, so not that many people were doing it. It was mostly for the trinket that turned you into a fish.
I dont get it. 50 people win it every sunday, and yet there are still thousands doing it after 20 years? Thats like 50000 people who won it on each server already, how many more people are there?

Not really, they only added the boots and ring, if I'm not mistaken. Hat and green boots (without the teleport) you get through rare fish drops during the event. Since launch, you could get pole, trinket, or +fishing enchant.
I really wish you had added this tip: Try to do it during a holiday weekend. I think this is very important as it turns out to be the best time to weed out most players yanked away for family events while us WoW lifers get to play. :D and if I may edit or clarify on some of your suggestions: 1) As he said, set your hearthstone to BB before the event starts but don't use it when the event starts. As stated the event is over in a few minutes - way before the cooldown is up on your hearthstone. Can't tell you how many friends that I suggested setting their hearthstone to BB only to have them forget and use it to get there for the event. 2) Another use for a friend is as a spotter. When I helped friends get this achievement, I would fly up and down the coast while they were fishing to see what schools are nearby and if anyone is heading towards them. Example: Schools to the north and south of my friend's current school. They can see the schools on the mini map but not if a group is 2 schools away heading up from the south and it is better to go north. That is where as a spotter I come in. 3) Using your friend as a taxi. These few seconds saved do add up. Maybe even for a win! Even if you can fly, if your friend is a druid with the current 2 passenger form or has a 2 passenger mount, it might be faster for them to swoop in, pick you up and then dismiss that form/mount and drop you off at the next fishing pool. Run a short distance from you and hop back into form/mount and go back to scouting. Before the latest change to druid flight form, I would use my sand drake and do this. 4) This one can be a bit controversial but I would also play blocker if someone would run up and start fishing from the same school as my friend. I would hop on a repair mount or other large mount and try to block their view.

Another thing to do is move the camera to directly above so you can see really quickly if your cast is just outside the pool. Sucks when you think you are in the pool, wait 30 seconds and get a normal fish.
First things first. the artifact fishing pole makes this tournament so easy. you gotta get it now. Its the first 40 winners in a region now? I can't tell if that makes it easier or harder. But it's a welcome change. Just before Legion it was the first person on each server or maybe whatever merged servers you were on, would get it. and second and third place were rewarded lesser items. I won it multiple times in WOD. :D there was very little competition. i'm glad the prizes haven't changed much. Time for some more wins!
Omg, I did it today and it was a slaughter. Only got 20 fish b4 end. There were like 3 people per node!!! Guess everyone was home for Memorial Day... *sigh*
So glad I won this when it was still in Northrend, twice, since boa gear was not battle.net bound. I was the 6th and 13th winner when the tournament was released.
Oh and kind of a dick move. I was trying to turn in the quest a week or two after my first win and there was a horde paladin trying to turn in two and he had a bunch of his guildies standing on the quest giver casting aoe spells and this was when Dalaran was notorious for lagging. Apparently he had his video settings so low it did not effect him but I lagged for a few seconds and lost. I ticketed it and the GM basically told me too bad. lol
As I’ve said before, is harder to get than . It can potentially take a few years to get Salty if RNG is being a bitch. Most people I’ve spoken to about the title gave up because they couldn’t get a few super rare fish required for the achievement.

Toasted_waffle they last time I remembered was the week they stopped doing it for a while to adjust it. Had like 59 people down in STV asking what was going on but nobody wanted to check the forums and chance missing the start so we did around for like 15 minutes xD

Hello! So this event is a bit fishy (no pun) on the EU servers. I did my achievement and got the ring in March 2017 with relative ease, the NPC did the yellow notification for first place every time someone handed their quest in - I counted about 7 or 8 notifications before I handed in mine. Recently I went back with a bunch of friends, I had convinced them how easy it is to get the ring, and that they could even start late and still finish on time. Unfortunately, it seems (to me) that the event is back to the “3 winners per server” state (on EU at least), as there were exactly 3 yellow notifications before the red yell went out and the WQ despawned. Unless of course it counts 50 for all of EU and only 3 of those were visible on my CRZ shard. I agree that you should be aiming for 12-15 minutes, that is roughly how long the event lasted. One of my friends managed to snag 3rd and get the reward, the rest were pretty salty (or not!)
Funny enough, I did the Kalu'ak fishing contest back in the day, won it, but when I was browsing the first place rewards, a someone turned it in quick and I lost :^(. It wouldn't let me complete quest.
I personally fish along the shore at the south/east section of Stranglethorn Cape, mainly because I've got pretty long loading screens, even in old world zones, so instead of Hearthstoning, I simply fly to Booty Bay, because of the proximity. On my server, this place is relatively low-populated, but it can be worse on some servers though. I managed to finally get it some months ago, on my own and using my method. Still cool to see your own trick, would have been handy in some situations for me :)
I know it has a five-minute cooldown, a two second cast time, has limited range and puts you in the middle of the pool, so you may only get three uses out of it during the contest. It is underwhelming.
Another trick that may / may not work: find the lowest pop cross realm you can. Earthen Ring is a good one; it's already a low-pop realm, and it isn't connected to any other realms. Then make a Class Trial druid on said realm.
Ok, so it's for the first 50, this helps a lot since I thought it was just for the first one to turn in. Just a question, how much fishing skill should I have at minimum to avoid thrash?
You are not required to have any particular fishing level to participate in the event. All you need to do is to have the fishing skill lernt. Even though you are level 1, you will have the same chance to catch fishies just like someone who is max level in fishing-skill.

Best time for non-druids to try this is during the Halloween world event - use a broom from the boss even for instant cast mount.

Monks can also fish while flying with Zen Flight. Although not moving at mount speed, great for reaching some pools if you dont have water walking
and monks can mount while using Zen Flight too, making them pseudo druids for this event

For people who want win this tournament the best spot for fishing now is near the Fort Livingston next to whirpool.

Just done it after trying it for 1st time in bfa. Playing on pvp servers all time and now finily with war mode i was able to do it in time :D

You don't need to level up fishing to win, i won it in my first try with level 25 (enough to get the "find fish" ability).

Its the first 40 winners in a region now? I can't tell if that makes it easier or harder. But it's a welcome change.
Just before Legion it was the first person on each server or maybe whatever merged servers you were on, would get it. and second and third place were rewarded lesser items.
I won it multiple times in WOD. :D there was very little competition. i'm glad the prizes haven't changed much. Time for some more wins!

Omg, I did it today and it was a slaughter. Only got 20 fish b4 end. There were like 3 people per node!!! Guess everyone was home for Memorial Day... *sigh*

So glad I won this when it was still in Northrend, twice, since boa gear was not battle.net bound. I was the 6th and 13th winner when the tournament was released.
Oh and kind of a dick move. I was trying to turn in the quest a week or two after my first win and there was a horde paladin trying to turn in two and he had a bunch of his guildies standing on the quest giver casting aoe spells and this was when Dalaran was notorious for lagging. Apparently he had his video settings so low it did not effect him but I lagged for a few seconds and lost. I ticketed it and the GM basically told me too bad. lol

As I’ve said before, is harder to get than . It can potentially take a few years to get Salty if RNG is being a bitch. Most people I’ve spoken to about the title gave up because they couldn’t get a few super rare fish required for the achievement.

Toasted_waffle they last time I remembered was the week they stopped doing it for a while to adjust it. Had like 59 people down in STV asking what was going on but nobody wanted to check the forums and chance missing the start so we did around for like 15 minutes xD

I got the boots and the fishing line both, way back in the day. I never won it to get the pole. Looks like it's changed a lot since then. I don't play wow atm but still like to see some of these videos.

So this event is a bit fishy (no pun) on the EU servers. I did my achievement and got the ring in March 2017 with relative ease, the NPC did the yellow notification for first place every time someone handed their quest in - I counted about 7 or 8 notifications before I handed in mine.
Recently I went back with a bunch of friends, I had convinced them how easy it is to get the ring, and that they could even start late and still finish on time. Unfortunately, it seems (to me) that the event is back to the “3 winners per server” state (on EU at least), as there were exactly 3 yellow notifications before the red yell went out and the WQ despawned. Unless of course it counts 50 for all of EU and only 3 of those were visible on my CRZ shard.
I agree that you should be aiming for 12-15 minutes, that is roughly how long the event lasted.
One of my friends managed to snag 3rd and get the reward, the rest were pretty salty (or not!)
Why don't they have it listed on the calendar like they used to? All the guides just say it starts at 2....but not that it's on SUNDAYS only.

Funny enough, I did the Kalu'ak fishing contest back in the day, won it, but when I was browsing the first place rewards, a someone turned it in quick and I lost :^(. It wouldn't let me complete quest.

I personally fish along the shore at the south/east section of Stranglethorn Cape, mainly because I've got pretty long loading screens, even in old world zones, so instead of Hearthstoning, I simply fly to Booty Bay, because of the proximity. On my server, this place is relatively low-populated, but it can be worse on some servers though. I managed to finally get it some months ago, on my own and using my method. Still cool to see your own trick, would have been handy in some situations for me :)

So the Underlight Angler Teleport to Nearest Fishing node doesn't help here? Works only in Broken Isles?
I know it has a five-minute cooldown, a two second cast time, has limited range and puts you in the middle of the pool, so you may only get three uses out of it during the contest. It is underwhelming.

Back when I won it it was only the 1st on the Server to get the 1st Price. I got it back in WotLK.
Another trick that may / may not work: find the lowest pop cross realm you can. Earthen Ring is a good one; it's already a low-pop realm, and it isn't connected to any other realms. Then make a Class Trial druid on said realm.
Sharding kinda negate this. They disabled sharding in RP realm, but only on certain zones, is STV one of them? idk.

First 50 in your region, so for example, first 50 in North America.
You are not required to have any particular fishing level to participate in the event. All you need to do is to have the fishing skill lernt. Even though you are level 1, you will have the same chance to catch fishies just like someone who is max level in fishing-skill.
