This was a really helpful video. When I was first playing with the ruby, I wasn't understanding that it's literally designed just like the amp, meaning that there are going to be settings I like and settings I don't. It's crazy how advanced this technology is!

The Ruby's "Normal" channel sounds great with the "Rangemaster" treble boost on. That's the basis of Brian May's sound. It works nicely with some gain or clean. I use Ruby mostly in the "Normal" channel with a "Tech 21 Q Strip" which gives me all the treble, etc. I want, along with an Xotic SP compressor when I set it clean. With more gain, it compresses naturally as the real thing does. The Beatles and many other British bands of the mid '60s recorded with non-top boost AC-30s, outboard compression, pre-amped and EQed in the recording desk. They certainly did not want for treble, chime and jangle. In the top-boost channel, centering the cut knob and raising the treble and bass (turn them counter-clockwise) reduces those strong Vox mids and you can get pretty close to a Fender DR "Vibrato" channel sound. Ruby is quite versatile and has a lot of sounds in it that are not necessarily intuitive when you first use it. This is the problem with many of the reviews of it that I have seen. Often, the reviewer is not handling it properly. Like all good gear, a little intelligent tweaking can grant great rewards.
The biggest issue I have with this amp is that there are so many cool tones in there but you pretty much just have to choose one for a gig, cause it’s not practical to keep twiddling with the knobs 😂
@@officialWWM The solution to too much choice is to choose one amp sound that you like and go with that, at least until the first set is over. If you want to, you may change it to a different sound/amp model during the break and use it in the next set and so on . Just as with an amp, you get what each amp model sounds like within the parameters of its tone stack, etc.. I don't think that Ruby or any other similar amp modeler ought to be more challenging than a real amp ,and it is much more versatile.
I don’t even play guitar and I loved this video!! Interesting watching the process of getting it ready to rock. I also appreciate how your first time with the second guitar was on video. It is important to understand that with an AC-30 circuit, the EQ and Cut controls deduct frequencies from the wide frequency base sound (no choke), making room for other frequencies. Bass and Treble are interactive, when turning those down (aka turn clockwise!), you’re basically receiving a mid boost. Use the Cut to adjust overall presence (you normally would adjust to bright / dark rooms with this).
Yes, you've got it exactly. Just as reducing treble and bass when in the top boost mode increases mids, turning them up (counter-clockwise) reduces mids and you can get a slightly mid-scooped sound like a DR. Personally, I like lots of mids so I keep the treble and bass just a bit higher (to the left of the12:00 position, 10 - 11:00). This is the VOX chimey, mid-range tone of great fame and is wonderful with a toaster Rick 12, a Gretsch Duo-Jet with Dynasonics. or an old Tennessean. Going even further towards a mid boost (reduced treble and bass) and you approach and enter into tweed country. Ruby is really versatile and can do so much.

Question, for your Veritas what neck profile did you go with and why did you choose the modern pafs as opposed to the bearcats?? Also thank you for this video and the one of your board super helpful!!!
Hey there! I went with the medium C neck because it's always a safe bet on a guitar I've never played before. As far as the modern pafs I just felt the bearcats we're a little too light and open, I would use a tele or something similar for that kind of sound, for this guitar I wanted a more traditional paf sound and I heard good things about the fralin modern pafs
Loved the video! Thanks so much. I have a question... When you're dialing in your tele, what do you set your volume & tone knob to on the guitar? I'm thinking around 50-75% on the volume and 50% for tone, but not sure if that's best practice. The reason I'm thinking that for volume is it'd be nice to have some wiggle room in each way not just for loud/quiet but also for further distorting & cleaning up.
Hey man, yeah that’s a great strategy I know some guys who do that! I leave all my knobs fully open at 100% only because I have all my gain stages setup through my overdrives, as far as the tone knob I rarely need to roll it down for what I play.

I prefer the ruby because I love ac30 amps, so if your a fender guy I would get the dream, if your an ac30 guy get the ruby. The dream is probably the more versatile one that would sound good with any guitar.
Loved your video, I've watched plenty of vids featuring this pedal in the hope it can cop Rory Gallagher tones with a strat and overdrive pedals pushing it. I have yet to find such a video and would love it if you did a video trying to cop Rory's tone using the Ruby.

Are you running your wet effects (delay/reverb) into the Ruby? Reverb and delay hitting the front of the Ruby gives this terrible sounding low frequency percussion kind of sound specifically hits switching between different notes, have you experienced this?
I am running reverb and delay into the ruby in this video. This is how I normally run my amps, I haven’t found that issue or noticed it anyway in my setup, I do find I have to run it on the cleaner side of the edge of breakup otherwise it runs out of headroom pretty quick when slamming it with those effects. But I do like the mushy sonic sound it creates when it’s being hammered with overdrive on top of reverb and delay.

Great video and review I have one question, I use my Ruby for studio, no amp involve just straight to the interface! I’ve notice that there’s some noise or hiss, just using the presets I’ve have a Fender Stratocaster and also an Epiphone SG and I still hear the noise … I was using a compressor and a booster pedal and noise was even bigger! I have a little black JHS buffer and the signal was very noisy, wondering what to do that in that case? Thanks !!
Hi Andres, Whenever there is noise I would recommend starting with just the guitar into the Ruby into the interface, if the noise is gone then slowly add 1 pedal at a time until you find the culprit. If there is still noise with just the guitar connected straight into the ruby with no pedals in between then the preamp on the interface may need turned down a bit and then use the output volume of the ruby to make up for the difference. Hopefully that helps!
Hey! I haven’t actually tried many fuzz pedals on it except the kilt v2 with the fuzz setting turned on, it’s kind of a Velcro sounding fuzz and I think it sounded pretty good! Hope that helps
Hello, yes you are correct, however the second one will sound slightly different but as far as the eq it will adjust both at the same time but the second one will always sound slightly different. You can’t adjust one or the other unfortunately.
Hi I bought the Ruby and am pretty underwhelmed. I am using it as a pedal in front of an amp. I tried using it in the effects loop but it doesn’t seem to work. These amps in a pedal are supposed to be used another way right? Like into a FRFR or a powered cabinet? I don’t do recording, more of a bedroom player. What’s the best way to use the Ruby?
Hey! Yeah these amp in a box pedals are designed to be ran into an FRFR or powered cabinet, or some other type of monitoring system like an audio interface into studio monitors or a front of house sound board. If your a bedroom player I would run the ruby into either an audio interface such as a Scarlett or Apollo and then use the headphone out to practice and hear yourself or a pair of studio monitors, your other option is running into an FRFR speaker. Treat the ruby like an amp at the end of your chain. You can still run wet effects after it to act as an effects loop. I imagine the ruby wouldn’t sound great running into an amp as an effect like you mentioned. Hope that helps!
Hey man yes they are! I think newer ac30s they changed that to not be the case, but with vintage ones they were cut knobs which is what this pedal is trying to recreate.
Hey thanks! If you are just running the ruby in stereo like in the video you do not have to flip the phase. Both channels are already set to match each other. If you run something like the ruby and pair it with the dream then you will need to flip the phase.

It would be great to have 5-10 presets available hands free at your feet without having to touch your phone. Maybe I’m missing something. It sounds exactly like my ac15. Incredible Vox vibe. @@toddmusic that’s awesome so glad you like it! Yeah the presets part is a little restrictive. I have not found a workaround for presets other than having to use your phone to select them. Maybe universal audio will release and update someday to allow us to switch between them on the pedal itself.
I never use the bright. If you select the normal channel you use the boost to get more top end. This is the true Brian May sound. No top boost and I use the boost up half way. The bass with these pedals in my little room is way too much. I end up dialing them out for the most part if the bright channel.

I sing so use 1 channel for a mic. I figure I would have to go mono with the Ruby to the Apollo. Have you tried going mono? Thank you again for the great video!
Hey man! I am going stereo out of the ruby and then going into the Apollo using both mic inputs. In your case you would want to go mono in since your other input is being used for a microphone. I have tried going mono and it sounds just as good, you just lose the stereo width from your stereo pedals if you have any.
That is totally fine as well if you're near the interface. The only reason I run the canvas is so my board is xlr friendly. So when I play at a gig I can just plug right into 2 xlr cables that will send a balanced signal to the sound board since it will usually be a long run it will keep my signal from degrading since it's a balanced signal. You could use a DI in that instance as well but the canvas also won't drop decibels like a DI so it sends a full line level signal which just lets me be louder and have a lower noise floor. If you're in a bedroom or studio it's not necessary at all if it's within say 15 feet or so.
I wondered about that as well. I run my Ruby stereo into my Apollo Hi-Z inputs 1 & 2. It just sounds thin and breaks up too easy. I have messed around with different gain levels on both the Apollo and the Ruby. I just can’t get it to sound anywhere as good as every other demo I’ve watched. Any advice?
@@good4sound kewl man yeah, some things to maybe try. I find the ruby to have very little head room to begin with so I would start by keeping the volume knob (drive) at about 25% give or take. Especially if you have humbuckers it can get kinda fizzy if your cranking it. On the Apollo I would make sure you have the "link" button turned on since you are sending a stereo signal. Make sure the channels aren't clipping in the red, you want to get them around the yellow. I find cutting out the highs can give more room low end to come through so try lowering the treble knov more and turning the cut knob up more to cut more highs out but not too much that it chokes out. Hopefully that helps!
@@good4sound Yes, this happens because the Ruby has unsymmetrical line output levels, not instrument. You need to connect it to the line/mic inputs and adjust to line level. This offers more headroom and better sound. Hi-Z is for direct guitar / bass connections.
Im not sure what the standard is for boss pedals, but as long as it’s a 9volt power supply and supplies 400ma or more. Your power supply will show both of those on the back of the power supply it can be 1500ma and still be fine just make sure the voltage is not higher or lower than 9 like if you use an 18v power supply it will break it same as if it’s 5v it needs to be 9 volts.
Hey there, no that’s just how I set it at home to better dial in tones in preparation for a gig where they will use there own preamp at the sound board.
The AC-30 and now its absolute clone, Ruby, works so well with a Telecaster This is a somewhat puzzling, although quite welcome coincidence.. After all, in 1959 when the first AC-30 was designed and built for Hank Marvin and his Strat, there were no Teles in England (except for Muddy's one in '58, but he took his home). I suppose that Hank's bright Strat sound for which the amp was designed was not so far from the Telecaster's. Anyway, my '52 Tele, which will come as a surprise to no one always sounds great, sounds better than it ever did through Ruby. A close second may be my '59 Super which is in a class by itself, but is as powerful as a contemporary Bassman. However,, with its two 10" speakers (old Celestion G-10 Greenbacks, the original Jensens went a-glimmering who know how long ago), iIt's a lovely, loud beastie, Ruby is as great at any volume.
I am surprised that the pedal is not designed for just clean sound, as possible with actual vox. It distorts too easily. The break up ideally should start past 1 o’clock.
Great video, but I think you don't understand the FM-curve. That curve describes a psycho-acoustic phenomenon you cannot "trigger" by turning the volume knob on the pedal, if the volume knob only changes volume and isn't doing some eq stuff as well. It depends on how loud someone listens to your sound/song/videoclip - no matter what you have done with the volume knob.
I get that, I'm just explaining how you can essentially trigger it at your house by turning up the volume more because you can hear more highs come out. I like to dial it in darker because we run a hot signal at my church so it usually ends up coming out with more high end especially the louder they turn me up. I should have worded that a lot better but I was going off script lol.

Would you recommend a powered cabinet like a line 6 powercab or a headrush frfr? The head rush is like half the price of the line 6 powercab

Hey thanks! If you are just running the ruby in stereo like in the video you do not have to flip the phase. Both channels are already set to match each other. If you run something like the ruby and pair it with the dream then you will need to flip the phase.
@@lightfootfx Oh awesome. So if you are just using the ruby to record are you sending two outputs left and right to two inputs in your audio interface? I think that it is very cool that you mentioned universal audio makes them have subtle differences.

@@lightfootfx ended up getting the Ruby. Love the sound quality. Baffled by the restrictive preset interface. It would be great to have 5-10 presets available hands free at your feet without having to touch your phone. Maybe I’m missing something. It sounds exactly like my ac15. Incredible Vox vibe. @@toddmusic that’s awesome so glad you like it! Yeah the presets part is a little restrictive. I have not found a workaround for presets other than having to use your phone to select them. Maybe universal audio will release and update someday to allow us to switch between them on the pedal itself.
Which do you prefer going direct- Dream or Ruby?
I prefer ruby because I’m an ac30 guy. But the dream is just as good, if I was an American amp guy I would go with the dream.

Hey the first half of the video I did not it was just the pedal, towards the end I did have a reverb turned on it was the jet revelation v2
I never use the bright. If you select the normal channel you use the boost to get more top end. This is the true Brian May sound. No top boost and I use the boost up half way. The bass with these pedals in my little room is way too much. I end up dialing them out for the most part if the bright channel.
Makes sense! I’m slowly realizing this as well, how much the boosts can change the sound on the normal channel.
Thank you for this video. My band mate just bought the dream. I am interested in the Ruby and I have the Apollo Twin X. Are you going stereo thru the mic and guitar inputs? I sing so use 1 channel for a mic. I figure I would have to go mono with the Ruby to the Apollo. Have you tried going mono?

Hey man! I am going stereo out of the ruby and then going into the Apollo using both mic inputs. In your case you would want to go mono in since your other input is being used for a microphone. I have tried going mono and it sounds just as good, you just lose the stereo width from your stereo pedals if you have any.

Hi - I run my Ruby straight into the audio interface and it seems to sound fine. Can you comment on why you run through the Canvas first?
That is totally fine as well if you're near the interface. The only reason I run the canvas is so my board is xlr friendly. So when I play at a gig I can just plug right into 2 xlr cables that will send a balanced signal to the sound board since it will usually be a long run it will keep my signal from degrading since it's a balanced signal. You could use a DI in that instance as well but the canvas also won't drop decibels like a DI so it sends a full line level signal which just lets me be louder and have a lower noise floor. If you're in a bedroom or studio it's not necessary at all if it's within say 15 feet or so.

I wondered about that as well. I run my Ruby stereo into my Apollo Hi-Z inputs 1 & 2. It just sounds thin and breaks up too easy. I have messed around with different gain levels on both the Apollo and the Ruby. I just can’t get it to sound anywhere as good as every other demo I’ve watched. Any advice?
@@good4sound kewl man yeah, some things to maybe try. I find the ruby to have very little head room to begin with so I would start by keeping the volume knob (drive) at about 25% give or take. Especially if you have humbuckers it can get kinda fizzy if your cranking it. On the Apollo I would make sure you have the "link" button turned on since you are sending a stereo signal. Make sure the channels aren't clipping in the red, you want to get them around the yellow. I find cutting out the highs can give more room low end to come through so try lowering the treble knov more and turning the cut knob up more to cut more highs out but not too much that it chokes out.

@@good4sound Yes, this happens because the Ruby has unsymmetrical line output levels, not instrument. You need to connect it to the line/mic inputs and adjust to line level. This offers more headroom and better sound. Hi-Z is for direct guitar / bass connections.
How many presets can you save on the Ruby?
Good question I am not sure actually, the most I have at the moment is 9 but I bet I could add more
Can I use a regular Boss adapter for this?
Im not sure what the standard is for boss pedals, but as long as it’s a 9volt power supply and supplies 400ma or more. Your power supply will show both of those on the back of the power supply it can be 1500ma and still be fine just make sure the voltage is not higher or lower than 9 like if you use an 18v power supply it will break it same as if it’s 5v it needs to be 9 volts.

Hey there, no that’s just how I set it at home to better dial in tones in preparation for a gig where they will use there own preamp at the sound board.

The AC-30 and now its absolute clone, Ruby, works so well with a Telecaster This is a somewhat puzzling, although quite welcome coincidence.. After all, in 1959 when the first AC-30 was designed and built for Hank Marvin and his Strat, there were no Teles in England (except for Muddy's one in '58, but he took his home).
I suppose that Hank's bright Strat sound for which the amp was designed was not so far from the Telecaster's. Anyway, my '52 Tele, which will come as a surprise to no one always sounds great, sounds better than it ever did through Ruby. A close second may be my '59 Super which is in a class by itself, but is as powerful as a contemporary Bassman. However,, with its two 10" speakers (old Celestion G-10 Greenbacks, the original Jensens went a-glimmering who know how long ago), iIt's a lovely, loud beastie,
Ruby is as great at any volume.

I am surprised that the pedal is not designed for just clean sound, as possible with actual
vox. It distorts too easily. The break up ideally should start past 1 o’clock.
Yeah it can distort pretty quick, maybe that’s the way the 1963 Vox’s were like.
Great video, but I think you don't understand the FM-curve. That curve describes a psycho-acoustic phenomenon you cannot "trigger" by turning the volume knob on the pedal, if the volume knob only changes volume and isn't doing some eq stuff as well. It depends on how loud someone listens to your sound/song/videoclip - no matter what you have done with the volume knob.
I get that, I'm just explaining how you can essentially trigger it at your house by turning up the volume more because you can hear more highs come out. I like to dial it in darker because we run a hot signal at my church so it usually ends up coming out with more high end especially the louder they turn me up. I should have worded that a lot better but I was going off script lol.
