I love how Guy spent the whole movie worrying about being the expendable crewman, yet when Saris shot everyone he was the only one who DIDN'T die.

I think my favorite part of this movie is Alan Rickman's character and performance. It is a great homage to Leonard Nemoy and his complicated relationship with his character Spock. The spark notes are Leonard Nemoy was a classically trained actor that much prefer stage and Shakespeare to sci fi and campiness. When Star Trek took off and became popular, he was no longer taken seriously by the general public and couldn't get any acting jobs other than Spock, so he could basically just do Star Trek and conventions. But after a long time, he came around to be thankful for the chance to play such an iconic character and grew to love the fan base that lifted him to stardom.

Fred is high the entire movie. That’s why he’s so chill and constantly snacking. But, to get the rating they wanted, they had to remove references to the pot.

Tony Shalhoub, who played Fred, is a national treasure. He first came to fame on the tv show Wings in the 1990s, but is most known for playing Adrian Monk on the show Monk. He also played the title character’s father on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” He’s been a supporting actor in lots of films, but if I had to pick one to watch, it would be “Big Night.” The movie is about two brothers running a small Italian restaurant, and culminates with the ultimate Italian dinner. Be warned that even if you eat just prior to watching, you will immediately want to go eat again after viewing this.

“Big Night” was a good movie. I saw it in the theater with my best friend, who is a second generation American with Sicilian roots. She was telling me the names of the dishes they were preparing for the big dinner. And yes, it really made me want to go to a good Italian restaurant and order something totally outside of my meager budget.
Tony Shalhoub also played an alien pawn shop owner in “Men in Black”. He really is a great actor!

Need to check out Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary. This is a love letter to fans, as near a perfect movie as can get.
"I had originally not wanted to see Galaxy Quest because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek. Then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theater.’ And I did, and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did." - Patrick Stewart

There are a thousand ways this could have gone wrong and everyone involved dodged them all. Many fans of this movie have gone on to say this is a missing Star Trek episode. This movie takes the fans seriously, but not itself. Perfect.

    "Never give up. Never surrender."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Rainn Wilson and Justin Long.
Casting Notes Fact: Laliari is the first main role Missi Pyle landed in a feature film. Her role was expanded after the producers noticed Sigourney Weaver was the only female main character.
Fan Boy Fact: Tim Allen admitted that he was quite star-struck when he met Sigourney Weaver, as he's a huge fan of Alien (1979). Allen even asked Weaver to sign some of his Alien Franchise memorabilia between takes. She ultimately did.
Red Shirt Lives Fact: Despite frequent whining about his character Crewman Number Six being expendable and going to die, Guy Fleegman (Sam Rockwell) is the only crew member not to be shot and killed by Sarris (Robin Sachs) during his surprise assault towards the end.

Glad you enjoyed it, this is by far the best Star Trek movie. :} Also, yes Fred (Tony Shaloob) was meant to be stoned through most of the movie (thus why he was so chill). There were deleted scenes that made it more obvious, but the things left in were the paper bag he was carrying around (which held snacks) and a little puff of smoke that appeared when his teleport sheath dissipated after he first arrived on the ship.

This movie was such a happy surprise. A few of us decided to see a movie one Saturday afternoon, and went to see this because we liked a lot of the cast. It was SO much more than we'd expected. Everyone on the cast was giving it their all and the fan-service story was brilliant. Most of us had grown up in the 70s with parents who were fans of the original Star Trek series, and we were steeped in all things Trek. One of my high school friends even had the set of Star Trek blueprints. So the fact that the fans helped save the day was a bonus.

I’ve read (in multiple comment threads including this one) that the bathroom scene actually happened to Shatner. What nobody really comments on is the ego-crushing situation of this guy (who is supposed to be a pretty big celebrity, or at least that’s how he sees himself) having to use the public restroom in the first place. A convention this big should probably have a private bathroom for any “A-list” talents. I doubt anyone is standing next to Jonathan Frakes at a urinal at many Star Trek TNG conventions, and I think the implication here is that other than a few rabid fans, this cast is mostly forgotten at the time setting of the movie. When seen through that lens, it would cut pretty deep to hear people talking that way, and then coming to the realization that you’ve been deluding yourself and that you really are a “has-been”.

This was plenty unlike any other characters i'd seen him play before: the xtra who dies in episode.... Actually, he's got great chops.

I always think of Sigourney Weaver as Ripley or as a serious actress - her role in “The Year of Living Dangerously” comes to mind. I tend not to associate her with comedy. But she was in Ghostbusters! So yes, she can do comedy!
This was a great role for her, an actress typecast to a role. She is an aging sexpot who still has to act at conventions like she did in her mid 20’s, even though she is now in her 40’s; the leg kick and the hands on hips during her intro at the convention cracked me up. It was demeaning in her 20’s to play a “useless female” who was there for only for her looks. Now, she is more humiliated at having to be in that role 18 years later. A great change from Ripley and a wonderful performance by Weaver as well as the rest of the cast.

He plays a man with extreme OCD, kinda a 180 from Fred, anyways... basically Monk uses his condition and the hyper awareness it gives him, to solve crimes. It's a comedy crime drama, ran for several seasons.

"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make. I find it sad that the "postmodern writers" of today's Hollyweird can't write anything remotely as interesting. This has "The Last Starfighter" (1984) or "Tremors" (1990) vibe: An underrated B-movie that reaches A-level due to great writing and great actors.
