- This is Episode 188 of Mike Finnegan's Garage and you're gonna love the new project car err truck that just arrived. Here's the story: way back in the early 2000s I was the Editor of Off-Road Magazine, which was one of the few places you could find coverage of the west coast desert racing scene. I didn't work there long but I loved it, even going so far as to convert my stock '03 Toyota Tundra into a "Prerunner" styled pickup. It has Camburg long travel front suspension, Deaver Leaf springs with Sway-A-Way dampers, a full bumper-to-bumper rollcage and it was a ton of fun to drive in the dirt. Fast forward to the winter of 2021 and I got a chance to drive Ryan Beat's Pro-2 race truck for a few laps around Silver Dollar Motorsports Park in Reynolds, Georgia, and the six or seven laps changed my world for the better. I had forgotten how much fun it is to drive something with suspension travel that can be measured in feet, not inches. Right then and there I decided to build my own truck that worked on the street and the dirt.
Realizing I was in deep building the Caddy and my wife's jet boat and had zero time for yet another project, I set out to find a used Pro-2 race truck as the base for my next build.
Pro-2 trucks are single seat race vehicles, which are not geared or aligned for street driving on the street. The also only have one seat in them. But, Sean Hogdon, came through with a lead on an ex-Pro 2 truck, which had been converted to a two-seater and I was able to strike a deal to buy it from Stronghold Motorsports. Freiburger and I drove it in a recent episode of Roadkill on the MotorTrend Plus app, and then it was shipped to my house in Georgia. This is what happened the day it came home....

That thing is so sick. It's like an adult version of a go kart. It's got to be so much fun hitting jumps and ripping off road.
This ain't No Raptor or TRX which would fall apart after jumps.
@@shadowopsairman1583 Those trucks are sturdier than you think. They can't be abused as much as a Pro 2 Truck. Street Speed 717's first TRX wasn't in the best shape appearance wise, but it ran perfectly fine. Little bit nose heavy but it can jump. That goes the same with the Raptor as well. All he broke was bedmount, easy to fix.
If you want to know how excited these guys are… vehicle reveal same day as Roadkill… so you know… they this is going to be great in every episode…. Good job Mike! This is awesome!
I had to check my motortrend once Finn said this was a roadkill truck. Looks like I have another 40 mins of entertainment tonight!!

By swapping the TH400 for a 6l80e you can drop the rear gearing down to about 4.30's and gain OD. You'll end up with pretty much the same gearing off the line but driving on the road will be a lot better. Even going with 5.13's in the rear and a 6l80e would be an improvement.

@@stacysery5612 That's like saying the 200-4R is weak. In most factory applications they were weak. Built they handle extreme levels of power. There are 1000+ HP GN's still running them. It's the production 6l80's that have a bad rap.
Chevy performance parts has 6l80's rated at 650lb/ft(200lb/ft more than a stock TH400) and other companies are building them to handle even higher power. A factory trans vs a built trans are two very different things and I don't see Finnegan swapping a junk yard trans into the truck..

@@stacysery5612 excuse me 80 means 8000 lb gvwr like the 4L80. So it can handle it, even a built 4L60 can handle it
4L60 is 6000 Lb gvwr.
@@CzechSixTv I agree, I've got carbon clutch packs in our 6L80e and a few other small components like a trans cooler. It hauls a fully loaded down van and trailer like cake.
Growing up in ‘70’s SoCal hot rodding/street racing we always had to have one eye on the rear view mirror keeping an eye out for a CHP cruiser. Not any more…people today drive there with complete impunity unafraid of getting a speeding ticket. Talking to a retired CHP officer he said nowadays they spend their shift traveling from incident to incident and almost never have time for enforcement work. I guess that’s why you guys didn’t get popped driving Interstate 10 in your plateless off-road rig. Fun stuff! BTW…I got to visit Glen Helen when it was still a ranch in the late 60’s as a kid. My Dad worked for the County of San Bernardino and was one of the construction inspectors overseeing the conversion of Glen Helen to a regional park. Cheers!

It would look neat with a 69-75 International D series body. Mostly flat panels would make fitting it easy

It’s a short course pro lite truck that madex Bailey campaigned it’s 2 wheel drive with a minimum of 450hp per rules but they discontinued the series in 2020 and it has clearly been modified since then
This was the best intro to a RK episode. Seeing Cotton so happy and having a true RK failure post episode is just awesome. Really looking forward to future videos.

I love the new ride, it looks like it would be worth fabricating a roof scoop and ducting to get air to the radiators. Don't quote me on this, but when jumping, it's best to keep some wheel speed, it helps stop the nose dipping while you're in the air. Ken Block can explain how it works... :)

Just cut both sides off flush with the top of the "door", throw a temporary aluminum panel on the roof, and act like you meant it to be that way. That wasn't a flaw, it's now a feature. Problem solved.
