Abbath aint no Dave Mustaine or Alexi Laiho, but he can create riffs that make you feel like youre caught in the middle of a Norwegian blizzard. He has a way of creating riffs with such an amazing atmosphere and that makes him a really great guitarist
Nicole Smrekar lol yea cause Dave mustaine didn't write a good chunk of Metallica's first record, influence millions of guitarists, or manage to write several equally monumental albums in metal after being kicked out of the biggest metal band in the world. Not mention setting the bar for the then infantile genre of thrash. Totally over rated!
Ive been scrolling through 7yrs worth of comments and I've not seen one bad and or negative comment. Just shows how awesome he is and how much of a positive impact Abbath has on us.
The beautiful thing about Abbath's music is that while not being technically intricate, it doesn't fail you to make you identify with whatever concept he's trying to get across, you just cannot help but feel that the song is more than just the tremolo picking, the sweep leads and whatnot... The ambient and the catchiness of his stuff is quite legendary in my opinion.
That is the point of music and the definition of serving the song. Its about evoking feeling and not technical shredding wankery which is more of a sport in my opinion.
I met him with Immortal in 1998 as my band opened the show 2 times for them (Paris and Lyon in France). A realy good man, we were surprised to see them so polite and so well educated. Realy! Good time with them, especialy Abbath super polite, very well mannered
At the end of this, I was speechless. I am not sure what I just watched. This is one of those videos that you have to watch more than once to really absorb it. He is a character, no doubt.
I wish there was a uncut version of this, this guy ROCKS & I would like to hear every word comming out of his mouth & every last plonk from his guitar..
The thing about Abbath is that he's crazy talented and a great guy. As much as I like black metal, they're were most of the extremists are. Abbath just seems so normal, and he even states people like Ace and Van Halen as is influences. Short version: He might be the only big Black Metal musician that doesn't appear crazy to the average metalhead.
7:34 holy smokes that tremolo picking is lighting fast and super tight, Abbath is one hell of a guitarist (and of course a fantastic multi-instrumentalist overall).
From a black metal player myself I can tell you right now his right hand is incredible. Very tight and accurate. On paper the guy who shreds a pentatonic scale seems more impressive than abbath playing riffs but go try to play some of these and you will see what I’m saying
Opening riff of Sons... ive never recovered from the triad. Still cant switch back from the muted riff. Kills me because abbath is just laughing in my mind hahaha
Abbath is a Master… he understands the importance of a good riff, memorable songwriting, and having an artistic identity. On top of that he makes it look so easy, and he is super fun
He is more than competent at what he does he just isn't very good at explaining it or showing it at slow speeds. I like the fact he is down to earth and likes to have a laugh.
Making great music isn't about being the "best" musician. Its about being creative and making music that people want to hear. Hail Immortal and hail Abbath
He's so much more down to earth than any other metal head I've listened to. It seems like a lot of them take themselves much too serious and this guy realizes that he does it because he enjoys it.
Just proof that it's not technical skill that matters in the end, but your creativity and song writing skills matched with good personality that really make a band what it is.
Abbath's strength lies in the ability he has to create an atmosphere with his riffage and whatnot... It's not like he's a musical illiterate, but he's not fucking boasting about it, he just plays and captivates anyone.

Erik Sundstrom I love Immortal. It's a fresh take on "something old". I've been a fan since Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism. Battles in the North and At the Heart of Winter are absolutely fantastic albums. I haven't heard the newer albums, but I must do something about that asap.
***** There's too much focus on whether people can do a perfect cover of Through The Fire and Flames or whatnot these days. Give me a decent, original player who plays something I haven't heard before and I will salute him!
I love this guy. He had such an influence on my own music! I feel like I understand him completely because I'm also this type of guitarist - all into making riffs and atmosphere and ZERO practicing (the result is borderline sloppy playing even live, but still borderline - the average person can't tell). Nergal from Behemoth is also this type of musician - a composer, but he can't afford to not practice. Abbath can and that's awesome. He also seems.. intelligent?

Maybe hearing the guitar isolated will make more people appreciate the greatness of Battles in the North. Those riffs are next level but it doesn't WOW you as immediately as PH or AtHoW. The debut album is underrated too.
i actually like this guitar lesson. i can't stand guard lessons that are too technical bc one tends to lose the spirit of metal(rock) at the heart of it. we ultimately want to see him play and his style. i applaud this lesson bc he seems honest about" dont try to pick apart every note" attitude. i believe that detracts from the spirit of playing. he comes across as honest that he just plays for the enjoyment which is what we should all learn from. btw.. i learned his riffs by watching
Abbath grandioso in tutto e per tutto e poi gli IMMORTAL mai impelegati nelle zozzerie di Euronymous e compagni....sound glaciale e divinazione della natura nordica. Tutti li. Fantastico Abbath, molto simpatico e umile. Grande ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love his style and his voice so much !!! He's not a guitar hero at all, far from it, he knows it but he plays amazingly. The strength of Immortal riffs is legendary. Abbath is great at being Abbath. I don't give a fuck if he does Steve Vai arpeggios. I don't want that. I want Abbath. I think his strong points are the riffs and melodic chords (progressions) he uses. Sons of Northern Darkness shows this perfectly. (Beyond the North Waves or Tyrants). Also, both him and Kerry King have their fingers out on their right hand when strumming. Many pro guitar players look down on this, but note that masters like Abboth and Kerry King both do it. So remember kids: play how its comfortable to you
Muse Nw Facepalm. Strangely enough, I am somehow aware of how to spell the name of the most famous guitar player of the last 40 years. The joke which you missed entirely, is that that's the way Abbath pronounces those names in his accent.
Actually Vs and Ws in English are switched in Germanic/Norse languages. In certain contexts, the Vs sometime get pronounced like Fs but I'm not sure what the rules are for when you use the W sound or F sound with V, W is always exclusively said with a V sound. It's not nice to make fun of non native English speakers mistakes on pronunciation, it just means they learned a word/name by reading it, as opposed to hearing it. #DonsFlameProofSuit
