  • Are you perhaps struggling with some aspects of practice? Do you wonder whether or not there are side effects from meditation? In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche explains that this depends on both the way you learn meditation and what your goal is for the practice. In particular, he mentions that embracing experience as opposed to blocking or controlling it is critical to cultivating well-being.

After decades of exposure to Western Buddhist teachers from the Zen and Vipassana tradition I have found in Rimpoche a teacher that explains his Tibetan version of Buddhism in a way so simple and direct that I cannot get enough of his talks. What a privilege to live in our time when we can go to You Tube and listen to talks from such an exceptional meditation master.

Great respect to this teacher. He has a way of explaining simple yet complex ideas in an understandable way. AND he doesn't bother with BS. He tells it like it is. It's about the sky, man, not the clouds.

I agree. Indeed great respect to the teacher. As a new beginner to meditation, I enjoy learning and it is comforting to know that the teacher takes the time to explain that there are no negative side effects from meditation. I really appreciate this. I am very interested in developing good mediation skills and there is an old saying that I once heard, " too much of one thing or too much of a good thing can be bad for you.' I am glad to know that I can apply myself as much as possible to learning mediation without worrying about experiencing negative side effects.

@u-dont-exist dotcom Yes, you are correct. But realization happens in stages. It's much easier for beginners to visualize and contemplate the sky/cloud model. Once they become more advanced, the model is just another manifestation of the mind/ego and must disappear. Then they will be able to progress to moksha.

Great the video. In the beginning I meditated according to a book. It caused me to develop this whole concept about how thoughts are bad, that nothing inherently exists and that I don’t exist myself. It totally freaked me out and I felt like I was going crazy. I stopped meditating for over 1 year because I thought it was the cause of me freaking the f*** out. Eventually I ran into YMR’s instruction and it was totally different. He teaches that it is the basic function of the mind to produce thoughts, like it’s the natural function of the heart to beat. Whenever your heart beats you don’t try to stop it right? We accept it as a natural function of the heart. But somehow we believe that thoughts must stop. Through YMR’s instruction I’ve been able to properly meditate. I’ve been doing it for 3 years now and I’m at the point where the stream of thoughts is something that vaguely happens in the background of my mind.

@@thankyou9534 freak out, be asleep, be afraid, be courageous, whatever you be, you can just observe it. You not existing isn't quite right... It's not "non-existance", it's non-self. Anatta is the idea that there is no permanent you. You're always changing, the old you ceases to exist and a new you takes it's place every moment. The continuous experience of being a self is the illusion. I assure you, you are quite real right now.

      @kayakMike1000 2 роки тому +2

@@qalam8609 why would you do that? Look at your own thoughts, why is it important that I believe as you do? I am not even sure what beliefs actually are other than a claim of truth, but these are could be linked to an adequate reference frame. For example, in physics, we all believe the earth is a round planet. I cannot make myself believe otherwise. However... On small scales up to a few hundred meters, approximating the earth as flat is actually just fine. At small scales, you could say the earth is flat then... So within the context of some reference frame I am pretty sure Abraham's God is God.

Having bad instruction in meditation IS dangerous! At the very least, wastes a lot of time.
Buddhas do NOT have blank minds! Master Kamalashila was RIGHT! The BEST meditation one can learn and practice is the ways taught by Tibetan Masters (Lamas/Rinpoches). I lived with Tibetan Lamas and Monks for years. Rinpoches, such as You, can teach us PROPER, BENEFICIAL meditation practice and techniques.

don't try to stop/block thoughts and emotions; don't try to achieve/ aim for calm/bliss/ some special state; don't hold on so much to your expectations of meditation...just be, and focus on being more aware.

02:02 Well said Master Rinpoche "if you do not learn to embrace thoughts... your mind becomes more sensitive..it becomes more agitated". Even for a meditator, these samskaras are not easy to identify as it lurks in the multilayered subconscious, and it does influence the body as stress. See the full video, for the master gives the right way to achieve the goal. The remaining part is practice or Kriya. Jai Gurudev

I also use the awareness method
i lay down on bed close my eyes and let my mind run free, all i have to do is watch it run
when your mind stop thinking on their own and body feel like sparking water
the real meditation start at that point.

such a clear explanation of a sometimes unclear concept. it is really hard to bypass the intellect these days because we changed from homo sapiens to homo intellectualis. Intellect is that part of the mind that analyses and rationalizes about the data collected though our bodies. sometimes our intellect is so active we stop paying attention to any new data coming from our senses, or even worse we invent data all together which does not even exist in the world we live in, and this causes us to miss out on our lives. meditation is indeed shifting focus from our analytical mind to our observing mind. awareness means that we are able to observe the world around us without the urge of judging it, analyzing it intellectualizing it. this is why meditation for beginners is based on concentrating our attention on breathing or some other form of exercising our observing mind, which in turn forces our intellect in retreating from the central stage of our brains.

You are on the right track, allow me to help you a little bit:
Meditation is shifting from our linear, reasoning mind to OUR ORIGINAL MIND. The instinctive, 'devine' mind.
I will let the greatest writer ever describe it in this way:
"Enter into Inner Silence (deep meditation) and tell me what you see...
What is it, don Juan?" I asked. "I see fleeting black shadows all over the place."
"Ah, that's the universe at large," he said, "incommensurable, nonlinear, outside the realm of syntax. The shamans ( and rishis of old India) of ancient Mexico were the first ones to see those fleeting shadows, so they followed them around. They saw them as you're seeing them, and they saw them as ENERGY THAT FLOWS IN THE UNIVERSE. And they did discover something TRANSCENDENTAL."
"What did they discover, don Juan?" I asked.
"They discovered that we have a companion for life," he said, as clearly as he could. "We have a predator that came from the depths of the cosmos and took over the rule of our lives. Human beings are its prisoners. The predator is our lord and master. It has rendered us docile, helpless. If we want to protest, it suppresses our protest. If we want to act independently, it demands that we don't do so. They are the ones who set up our hopes and expectations and dreams of success or failure. They have given us covetousness, greed, and cowardice. It is the predators who make us complacent, routinary, and EGOMANIACAL. In order to keep us obedient and meek and weak, the predators engaged themselves in a stupendous maneuver-stupendous, of course, from the point of view of a fighting strategist. A horrendous maneuver from the point of view of those who suffer it. They gave us their mind! Do you hear me? The predators give us their mind, which soon after we are born and as we grow to young children it becomes our mind. Through the mind, which, after all, is THEIR MIND, the predators inject into the lives of human beings whatever is convenient for them. By playing on our EGO BASED self-reflection, which is the only point of awareness left to us, the predators create flares of awareness that they proceed to consume in a ruthless, predatory fashion. They give us inane problems that force those flares of awareness to rise, and in this manner they keep us alive in order for them to be fed with the energetic flare of our pseudoconcerns. And they ensure, in this manner, a degree of security to act as a buffer against their fear. The predators' mind is baroque, contradictory, morose, filled with the fear of being discovered any minute now."
Book The Active Side of Infinity, chapter Mud Shadows by the writer Carlos Castaneda

3:45 you can visualize Awareness as your pure "soul" that can't be modified by any experience, always the same forever
when I meditate I feel like is located in the back of my mind, and the "clouds" (emotion, thoughts, etc.) are in the front
so the more you focus and observe the clouds from the point of view of your Awareness the more your mind "heals" itself

Observe your thoughts without identifying with them.
Interestingly, in Italian mind (mente) has two meanings:
    1. mente (mind)
    2. mente (3rd person singular of the verb mentire - to lie). Almost implying that our mind is a liar!

Strong medicine can be dangerous. You need to approach meditation with wisdom. The Buddhists largely have this wisdom, I trust what this man says.

Self awareness has always been a mystery to many , only through self inquiry you can achieve the state of pure awareness of becoming an observer

After observer, deconstruct and unbind into no observer. As Buddha explained in Bahiya sutta.

Very true…. I recently found a meditation that helped me a lot (Shinzen young’s see-hear-feel method) and I was so excited but was thinking to myself I was subtracting all my limiting beliefs and eventually I would be a beliefless vibrant person (how I jumped to this conclusion no ideas). Anyways as the days continued I became more and more confused… I was like “wait what’s the point?!” Now I see that I’m doing it as a practice to increase my concentration like exercising and also for in the moment to see my thoughts 😊

Since you are a shinzen fan look up dark night of soul. Or "dukkha ñanas"... feeling like you're stuck or not making progress may actually be a good thing and a sign of progress

    • @susieq984
      @susieq984 2 роки тому

@@gxlorp thanks but I was stuck because of the reason that Yongey mentions here… got caught up in believing I was meant to subtract thoughts. Doing the meditation now has a clear purpose 👍🏻 (of course no goal is the goal) but I found the purpose of getting to know my awareness and strengthening my concentration power has not yet limited me in any way 👍🏻👍🏻

Wow what good timing for me. I’ve been trying to get serious about meditating lately and I went in thinking the idea was to remove all thoughts and emotions and just simply exist, but that just made me feel depressed and scared and I decided I would rather never reach enlightenment than go through that again lol. I will try again and maybe again if I have to
