you're completely right! there really isn't anything that the captures spooky, but not frightening vibe better than a theremin! and those plucked string instruments add to it wonderfully. my favorite part has to be the buildup at 1:32 and subsequent drop. a superb composition!
I really loved the erhu for Teapot Temple. Such a beautiful sound. Was bummed I didn't get a video of the player for that one 🙁 he was having technical issues with his camera, so I just told him to forget about it and record the part without filming.
If I could have recorded each section individually in the orchestra I would have (called striping) Just didn't have the budget for that though. The reason to do that is to gain more control in post production for mixing instruments and whatnot. But recording the whole orchestra together does have a very specific sound. You get all the different wavelengths of the instruments interacting with each other in that hall, and it definitely changes the sound. But the orchestra was the only thing where instruments were recorded live playing together. Other than that, every track was instruments added one by one. Like on "Dancing Horse" during the jig breakdown...I recorded my nyckelharpa at my studio, my violinist recorded himself later at his studio in Northern California, and the Kristin Naigus recorded her Irish flute in Florida after that, then it was all mixed together.
So gothic and beautiful, how it captured the melancholy of a haunted tavern in the woods. One can only imagine what awaits you behind each door.

Thank you! And I love that part too. The drop there is the modulation to a new key, and also a little hint to the Addam's Family theme!
this is brilliant, man! Lovely writing. The theramin works so well with it all too.
Appreciate it Marcus! This was probably one of my favorites to write for the project...actually had some half-decent modulations! 😂
Awesome sauce, John! Love the theremin!!
Me too! Was glad I had a chance to write something for it!
*slaps forehead*
Of COURSE it’s a Theramin! Perfect choice!
Were there any favorites that you noticed among the other musicians?
Also, what’s the benefits of recording live like this VS adding parts one at a time by yourself?
Knew it was going to be a theremin carrying the melody the moment I started reading through the tavern! Such a fun instrument.
