@@SamsTrains Yeah, the miniature railway is around 6-7 minutes long, you go through a tunnel and around a track, you need to pay for it which kinda sucks but it's a nice ride if you're interested in it.
The diesel is a BR 04. You can tell by the shape of the front windows on the cab. The BR 03s mainly have square windows, while as the 04s have more curved window frames. Another thing that helps to distinguish it is the shape of the exhaust chimney. Most 03s have the plant pot shape stack being wider at the top, while the 04s have more of a cone shape being wider at the bottom near the base. Some of the 03 class had different chimney variants similar to the 04 class, but the windows also helped distinguish them. Sorry if you've already heard this before, but I just like to make observations and deliver imput. Great video as always. I've always wanted to visit an heritage railway in the UK. Keep up the wonderful work. :)
A wonderful video Sam, the South Devon Railway encapsulates all that a Great Western Railway Branch Line is all about. 9466 is a 1952 built Hawksworth designed Pannier, and this loco like so many others, was rescued from Woodhams Scrap Yard in Barry, South Wales by the late Dennis Howells MBE, and it has always been kept in pristine condition.
Many thanks Sam, great footage of the South Devon. I always think it's fascinating that we talk about 'small' locos, when even small panier tanks are big machines! Great stuff, thanks again.
What a brilliant video Sam it looks such a beautiful line. What a fantastic day out. The scenery and stations where great. It was like going back in time. Can't wait for your next video Sam.

I recommend visiting the plym valley railway it’s a 1.25 mile journey form marsh mills to plym bridge it’s a short but beautiful line but it’s only open on sundays so if you do plan to go that’s the day 😉
Great video Sam, it's my local line! If I'd have known you were coming I would have joined you. One thing though, Staverton is pronounced Stav-erton instead of Stave-erton
Hi Sam, A lovely video, thanks for sharing. The auto-coaches have been there from the beginning of the preservation of the line in the late 1960s. Some of their GWR coaches date from the 1930s.
Hi Sam. Nice to see you out and about. It's been quite a while since I visited the SDR, but it's a great little heritage line (especially on a sunny day)!
well well as suspected you found one of my 2nd cousins on the 9644 locomotive one assumes he was the driver on that train for the day thanks for the awesome shot of him popping out @11:05 in the video while at totnes i must say when i visited july the weather was amazing and the scenery was fantastic as welll great shots sam as alway look forward to more like this as nothing beats real trains and by that i mean steam trains none of this modern stuff thanks again and hope you had a awesome time like i did

Glad to see Fred is still going strong. The interior views of the coaches and their furnishings are especially appreciated. And, yes, the LT livery is outstanding. Polished brass against dark mahogany gives a similar impression.
Where I live, we have a really lovely old station, and at least once a year, we get a pair of steam engines running shuttles for a heritage weekend. When they fill up with water, they use the fire hose.
Just to let you know, they have 4 autocoaches there and have done since the railway was preserved, but only 2 are operating. There is one visiting from Llangollen, and another from the Severn Valley
Hi, It is a lovely line and one of my more local heritage lines, along with the West Somerset. Nice to see, and think the 94xx is newer there. All the best :)
It’s a beautiful railway and I have been on it once and it’s a railway that I recommend to anyone in the area. The scenery is beautiful and it’s incredible. It’s nice to see this, and remember how well made the trip was and I loved the railway, even though I love the West Somerset Railway the most as my favourite railway line, but it’s a nice line. I rode on a Small Prairie 2-6-2 Tank 5526, and it was a lovely locomotive to ride on.
If you ever go on a train visiting trip to Australia, do not go during the height of the summer, because the steam engines won’t be running because of the fire hazard. I recommend the puffing billy railway outside of Melbourne. It’s a narrow gauge railway running through forestland, over some lovely trestle bridges. If you’re lucky, you might see a Garrat or climax locomotive, but even if you don’t, they run a fleet of cute NA class tank engines. Highly recommended. Cool history to it too. Closest thing Australia has to the tallylynn railway.
While I think US steam locomotives lacked elegance in their designs, I wouldn't say that they weren't beautiful. In the UK, we made locomotives designed to look sleek and elegant. But the US designed theirs to show off their horsepower and toughness.
Lovely day out, you quite rightly mentioned the appearance of good old Fred Dibnah but I think that I saw Bill Oddie quite oddly looking out of the carriage window at one point, just goes to prove that all the stars love a day out on a steam engine.
The SDR has always had auto coaches it never used to use them much, It had two sets of coaches a GWR collet/Brown Mk1 set and a second Crimson and Cream set of Mk1s. A few years ago someone opened a toilet door and nearly got seriously injured as the floor was missing(even though the toilet was locked out of use) since then the SDR had taken coaches out of service if they aren't good enough. As such the Autocoaches have seen more of a use, and sometimes PDSR coaches have been hired in.
Wow! Look at all Those Pannier's! Good seeing those Volunteers Working hard! I'm a Volunteer At the Fielding And District Steam Rail depo on Saturday so i know how it feels!! have a Good one! :D -Sam
Yup that was a Class 04 shunter Sam, both look quite similar though the 03 has a bump just before the cab on the engine compartment along with other changes but that's the easiest difference to spot in my opinion.
My local railway. It’s quite amazing. Can’t wait until they extend it to Ashburton and eventually restore 3803 and Dumbleton Hall. PS your pronunciation was a bit off but far better than most of the tourists we get. Buckfastleigh is pronounced b-u-ck fastleigh and Staverton is pronounced Sta-ver-ton.

Beautiful line.....I’ve been a regular visitor to both SDR & PDSR over the last 15 odd years, I’d be hard pushed to pick my favourite 🤔 Great video Sam lovely to see the panniers in action👍👍👍 Cheers John B
Autocoaches were derived from steam railmotors when it was discovered that the steam railmotor service became too popular and couldn't keep up with the demand. The original auto coaches were in fact converted steam railmotors but soon were being built as actual auto coaches from the ground up. Steam railmotors, as you probably know by now were rail carriages with a vertical steam engine or boiler in a cab at one end of the vehicle. They soon proved to be popular but sadly this led to their demise since they were replaced by the aforementioned auto coaches.
I love GWR Pannier tanks must be because they are a common engine on any great western railway. We have some on the SVR. From the perspective of someone helping restore carriages us volunteers really want to restore carriages to be as period correct as possible even down to the screws used to hold a door handle in place and to restore them to a high standard so they last 15-20 years in service.

So many things about this railway. The station at Totnes isn't in the original place it used to run into the mainline platform but for obvious reasons that can't happen anymore. I was also going to tell you that my grandad works on this railway as a fireman and you see him hanging out the side of the 94xx at 11:44, he worked the line in 1969 when it first went into preservation when it went to ashburton, if you ever see him he will always make the effort to chat to you and he also has a big model railway😂The 94xx is fitted for mainline spec so the cab is filled with electrical wires and buttons my grandad says you can't wash the floor because of this😂The autocoaches have been there since the line re-opened. Whilst on your visit did you see dumbleton hall and 3205 as they are down there, but not running so always being pushed from pillar to post waiting their turn in the restoration chain. Great video once again! Daniel:)
I agree Daniel - it's superb isn't it? Easily one of the nicest I've visited! And that's awesome - incredible that's your grandad!! Blimey - were the 94xxs like that from the beginning then? I know they were reasonable modern! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains they didn't have all of the wiring from the start but they would of had some as it was surprisingly much more modern than it looks, also staverton is a very original station and it was never dismantled when the line shut so that's how it is so original👍
Hi sam good video (guess I'm a sucker for steam engines) love the London transport livery and autocoach but I believe the little diesel was o 03 shunter
I like the red rods on the LT Pannier Tank. Red rods go well with some locomotives. The Diesel shunter made me think of Salty or Mavis, they are those kinds of engines.
Thank you Sam for replying, your the only one I'm subscribed to that actually answer my comments! You've answered many of my comments on many of your videos, and I'm glad to enjoy your videos. I don't get to see these magnificent locomotives here in America, so these videos make me feel like I'm there riding the train, and standing at the stations. I know you'll keep making great videos, and thank you for a lot of your information. P.S. Is that LT Pannier Tank the one used on "The Railway Children"? I remembered that you reviewed a train set based on that. -Nathaniel aka NickelPlateNerd
I do love preserved railways. I love the Severn Valley railway lots because some couliges of ours who work there gave us a tour of the non public spaces and now I feel I know the railway. It was an amazing experience. It is what has made me want to drive one. Do you ever want to drive a steam loco?
Sam there is a gala at the west Somerset railway ( winter steam ) and there is the spring gala there is a 9F coming the date are 23rd to 26th 2020 it is so good
Their other panniers 1369 had just entered service and the other one has gone to the west somerset railway, their three tender engines and the prairie are out of service I think.
Excellent video of your visit to the South Devon Railway during their gala back in April Sam 👍 I’ve just visit the Bluebell Railway during last weekend on Saturday and they had a Giants of Steam weekend with 70000 Britannia and B1 Class 61306 Mayflower in action. I bought the Bachmann L&Y 2-42 tank in the same livery like yours and cost 80 pound to buy. Have you heard that Hatton’s are going to do a set of four & six wheels in two years from now, are you excited for those? Another question, which day are you going to attend Warley model railway exhibition?
Thanks very much Joe - it certainly was more like April then August, haha! That sounds superb mate, hope you had a fantastic time. £80 is very good for the class 5, and yes - very excited!! I'm hoping to attend on the Saturday! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
At 9:58 is that the same whistle we hear at the start of your videos? And it’s a shame you didn’t get to see the model railway layout at Totnes station
If you ever make a trip to the United States, the 2 heritage railroads that I recommend are the Strasburg Railroad and the Western Maryland Scenic Railway.
Buckfastleigh is where all Will's kitsets are made, their factory is there. Not sure how familiar you are with those though since your railway is purely functional instead of modelling (nothing wrong with that by the way).
It’s been a while since I made a comment so I thought I would make one again I have to say I like the idea of you going on real railways good to see something a bit different and I’m sorry the weather was bad but I like steam trains whatever the weather keep up the good work :)
Many thanks for the comment Paul, appreciated as always! I really enjoyed this - and luckily the weather didn't spoil this one! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Staverton is a gorgeous station! :-) Someone made a neat little short film here earlier in the year. Search for "A Time And A Place" short film to see it.
2 western railways in a row! You'll have to branch out to some other regions! Southern or Eastern for instance! As for the coaches, you'd be doing very well to find one that wasn't original or at least made to look like it. The Severn Valley and Bluebell railways have some very nice old original rakes of coaches if that's your thing!
Totnes Riverside was built by the preservation society after BR stopped them using the mainline Totnes Station. All the platforms and sidings were built from scratch and the station building, canopy, signal box, water crane loos and storage shed were sourced from other disused GWR stations, taken apart and rebuilt at the new station in the 1980s. They called the new station Littlehempston for a while after the nearby hamlet but renamed it Riverside as people would drive to Littlehempston to find there was no access to the station.

Our trains are famous for living from 4059 to 1090 so long years we have a most famous here called flying scotsman

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
South Devon Railway!
I was there yesterday!
Ooh fantastic! Did you have a good time? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yes I did and they had a great model shop there to.
Been there twice now, really enjoyed the South Devon Railway.
This is my local railway, absolutely love it as well!
Brilliant video Sam amazing work.
THanks so much mate!! :D
Yeah me too - they did look excellent didn't they?! And yes - a lot like Mavis!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The reason why 9466 wasn't there at the time you went to the SDR before was because it was visiting when you visited. Great Video!
Ahh I see - thanks for letting me know mate! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
Very interesting sam, love these irl video’s
-kesse
Thanks so much Kesse! :D
Hi Sam, What a nice run, fantastic day out , You get all the fun All the Best Brian 🤗
haha thanks a lot Brian! You'd better have another birthday and take a trip there?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Dart Valley Railway is one of three heritage lines appearing on Steam Train Britain starting on Thursday on Yesterday.
That sounds brilliant Robert, I'll be sure to catch some of that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
i think the auto coaches are new as when i went in 2018 they were renervating them, it is good to see them up and running.
Ahh interesting - thanks for that Joshua! :D
@@SamsTrains on the day i went i had a lovely British railways livery gwr pannier tank 64xx
sorry, you are right! It is a 94xx. I didn't see the boiler pocking out witch makes it (sort of) a normal tank engine!
haha no worries mate - I thought I was going mad!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
How do you have so many shots of the train were you there all day getting shots or have friends recording there
haha yeah it was just one camera - I just edited it all together to make it look like I used multiple ones!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains ok thanks I'm guessing you where there for a while
Loved the video today Sam and beautiful locomotives
Thanks very much James, appreciate it! :D
Cool, I would love to go there at some point
Thanks a lot mate, I can highly recommend it! :D

I love pannier tanks there’s something about them, loved the video
-Ollie
Thanks Ollie - there certainly is - really loved seeing these! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I do love preserved railways. I love the Severn Valley railway lots because some couliges of ours who work there gave us a tour of the non public spaces and now I feel I know the railway. It was an amazing experience. It is what has made me want to drive one. Do you ever want to drive a steam loco?
Me too Jacob - and that sounds fantastic, lucky you mate!! :D
I drove a 9F once for my birthday - it was epic! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains which 9f was it?
My favourite is black prince (92203)
You should check out the Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature railway
I would like to Robert, thanks for the tip! :D

Their other panniers 1369 had just entered service and the other one has gone to the west somerset railway, their three tender engines and the prairie are out of service I think.
Ahh cool, thanks for this James! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Wow Beautifuly filmed Sam!
Thanks very much for that mate! :D
This is a picture of my mum and you should do the bure narrowgauge railway. It is beautiful
Great suggestion - I'll look that one up, thank you! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Excellent video of your visit to the South Devon Railway during their gala back in April Sam 👍
I’ve just visit the Bluebell Railway during last weekend on Saturday and they had a Giants of Steam weekend with 70000 Britannia and B1 Class 61306 Mayflower in action.
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome! Thanks for that Lucas, I'll remember that!
Cheers,
Sam :)
The diesel shunter is an 04, as its a flat body all the way to the cab
Duly noted mate, thanks for letting me know! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Once again another of my local heritage railways, I was there recently too, L92 is my fav. What day where you there???
Thanks very much Chris, glad to hear that's your favourite! I was there some time in early August! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Buckfastleigh is where all Will's kitsets are made, their factory is there. Not sure how familiar you are with those though since your railway is purely functional instead of modelling (nothing wrong with that by the way).
I didn't know that - that's very interesting!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Your welcome :) and glad the weather didn’t put you down either :)
Staverton is a gorgeous station! :-)
Someone made a neat little short film here earlier in the year. Search for "A Time And A Place" short film to see it.
It really was, very well kept too! That sounds great - I'll look at that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
So amazing and lovely, i wish i could go to a preserved railway
Thanks very much Nick! I hope you can one day mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Bachmann have a London Transport pannier loco 32-217A due out in April 2020
Yes I've seen that - it is very tempting! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It’s amazing how we go to the same railway. Shame the pandemic made it stop for a while. Very nostalgic
Yeah it's such a shame - fingers crossed we can go again soon! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh, Sam! I can’t believe you didn’t see the model railway!
Wow the panniers look amazing
Thanks Logan! :D
Real pannier tanks! Yes i like it! Good video!
Thanks a lot Marco! :D
00:40 Now we have the model for the London Transport Pannier tank!
Yes we do! Coming soon I think?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
2 western railways in a row! You'll have to branch out to some other regions! Southern or Eastern for instance!
As for the coaches, you'd be doing very well to find one that wasn't original or at least made to look like it. The Severn Valley and Bluebell railways have some very nice old original rakes of coaches if that's your thing!
haha absolutely Marcus - some southern railways would be fab to see! Duly noted on the coaches, I'd like to see that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains i volunteer on the Mid Hants Railway so I can vouch for that!!
I remember when Totnes station was called Totnes Littlehempstead. No idea why it changed to Totnes Riverside but whatever. XD
Ooh really? That's interesting - I wonder why?!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I volunteer there sometimes
Lucky you! Is it a nice place to work?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I 've also been here, on that train. It was amazing!
Awesome Charlie - it is amazing isn't it?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I loved it. The pannier tank is so detailed and kept so well too
