Well, well. Perhaps you are a railway enthusiast after all. A very well produced and enjoyable video, Sam. One of my favorite railroad topics is those small "critter" locomotives. Thanks!
Very cute industrial railway. Had to check the gauge on the web, it's a tiny tiny 18 inches (547mm) ! But the original line was standard gauge. The remains of the cable hauled part are notable. It's pretty obvious of how it used to work. The wagon-catcher looks like and idea coming straight from a Sam's train experiment....
Great to see Sam on Tour, i love these little travel vlogs, that show different railways, that in turn create/inspire ideas for model and layouts so we really should support these. Its not too far from me, so I will be popping along when it reopens and take a look, and offer a donation. Good Stuff Sam
Credit where credit is due Sam. I know I sometimes comment with criticism, although always meant as constructive, however this is the best produced video you've done to date. Perfect detail, perfect length and great shots of the location. Have to say I was wondering if you were going to rate it's crawl and mechanism at the end lol. As for your presentation, it definitely got 5 stars from me! Cheers Gary
Went there a few years ago, Steeple Grange and the artifacts around Cromford and High Peak is a fascinating place. There's a functional stationary engine in the area too.
Sam , excellent dayout video, looking forward to more? Have a look at 15inch guage Kirklees LightRailway ,near Wakefield some unique locos and Galas are excellent!! No handrails to criticise today!! Stay safe,
Look in to 7 1/2 in railroads. There are many of them scattered around the usa with more being built every year. Technically minatures they run live steam and haul passengers.
Fozz, we have two so famous that songs were written about them! The Frisco Silver Dollar Line (The Oak Ridge Boys “Ozark Mountain Jubilee”) and The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway (C.W. McCall’s “The Silverton”), not to mention the Dollywood Express at Dollywood here in Tennessee!
If you go back to the Cromford and High Peak Railway soon on it there is the Middleton Top Incline Engine House. It’s a winding house with a persevered twin beam engine in which now runs on compressed air on open days instead of steam. There is also the leawood pump house which pumped water into the Cromford canal. It has a preserved Non Rotative beam engine which still runs on steam! It’s a bit like Tees Cottage Pumping Station where I volunteer (that’s what my channel is named after)
Good to see a different style of video. The Erewash Valley is full of old railways if you know where to look, some going back to horse-drawn tramways. More like this, please.
These days out with Sam are great. If you can Sam have a day at the Apedale Valley Railway as it's a very interesting little narrow gauge line as it has a WW1 field railway using pre fabricated metal track which was like the narrow gauge track used in WW1. Best to go on a Gala day.
Great Video Sam. You should definitely do more trips to real railways alike this one. I will for sure try and make a visit here when it opens next year. :)
I have been on the high peak trail many times it us such a lovley place. I love the old brown round train station signs. Hope you enjoyed your day out Sam.
I noticed the brake van at the start of the video. I've been there in June of this year. As I remembered, the brake van is situated beside a beautiful resting area by a canal. It was quite a nice place.
If you find yourself round here again, check out Middleton top, where one of the winching engines is still there and kept in working condition. I also believe that the wagon in the catch pit is a genuine runaway!
Oh my gosh Sam this is the best video of you done yet thank you so much for your work I struggle with depression and you just make the day a little bit better for me have a loved one day to be on your videos or at least one of my comments thank you so much Sam!! :-)
Hey Sam - I've been there quite a few yrs ago on my bike & @ 0:26 cycled both up & down that hill!!! @ 1:42 - I do believe that old wagon in that 'Catch Pit' is real!!! 🙂🚂🚂🚂
I thought you weren't a train enthusiast, you were a MODEL train enthusiast? XD Seriously though, always fascinating to see smaller railways such as this. Thank you for another great video!
Took my daughters on this railway back in the early 90s , now taking grandchildren . Great to see it still operating, and still having ex underground mining ' paddy cars'
A fascinating little exhibit. Though I still feel sad to see that so little remains of the line. I imagine it'd have made a fine tourist attraction had it preserved.
As much as I love my full size trains I am leaning more and more to small mining/colliery operations and I have all the scenery/buildings /rolling stocketc to start a layout but no suitable locos.I take an interest in this because my Great Grandfather was the driver for decades of Wee Wee Georgie Wood a small narrow gauge steamer, that served the mine as well as the only communication to the outside world to the town of Tullah in Tasmania.A road was finally put in about 1960.Wee George is still going with tourist rides on a loop track around the town. There are vids on UA-cam.thx Sam
If you can find it, check out some of the old videos of the Cromford and high peak railway when it was working. You see that the cable was a continuous loop and the wagons would be lashed to the cable to be hauled up and down. Most of the time gravity would be used with the steam engine acting as a helper.
Hi Sam Nice one looks a fantastic little railway, , otherwise lost in time, Thanks for the discovery, All the Best Brian 🤗😎, (PS glad it wasn't raining)
Thanks to makes us discover such an interesting 304,8mm to the foot narrow gauge railway. I put it on my list of UK heritage railways to visit. No public transportation to go there ?
Great video, if you’d have carried on walking you would of reached the Middleton top engine house, the engine is still there and they run it on odd days on compressed air!
Hello Sam, awesome video as normal, I am looking to buy my first model railway set (00 gauge) for Christmas, is there any that you recommend, i have a £300 budget (give or take), and am looking for track, a loco, and some rolling stock, preferably DCC. I have been looking at the "Bachmann whiskies galore fitted sound train set", and was wondering if you had any thoughts on it, or if you had any recommendations, from someone looking to get into the hobby, and is quite serious about trains. Thanks, keep the good content up, Miles Edit: Or, could it be worth it to buy the pieces separately, and create it that way, as then I get choice of loco, and also rolling stock. Do you have any shop links to those, which will also support the channel?
OH MY LIFE! My neck of the woods! When was this filmed? If you don’t mind me asking. Would have been awesome to pop along and meet you :) keep up the good work Sam! :)
Well, well. Perhaps you are a railway enthusiast after all. A very well produced and enjoyable video, Sam. One of my favorite railroad topics is those small "critter" locomotives. Thanks!
haha maybe you're right Andrew - really glad you liked this one! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This is actually near my home, just outside of Cromford, and the Steeple Grange Light Railway is fantastic to have near my home.
Oh very nice Lewis - your home is in a lovely place!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I used to live in Brassington, the high peak trail runs across the top of the hill. if you walk a bit further.
@@williamhall667 how coincidential....I too lived in Brassington for a couple of years about 15 years ago
@@darkfrag83 it was over 25 years ago when I lived there just over the road from the village hall.

Thanks a lot Damien - yep that's the one, very tiny gauge indeed... but yeah, all new, not a preserved line or anything!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I feel the history in a beautiful place there. Very nice video ! Thank you, Sam !
You absolutely do - amazing little place!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Thank you!! I really like doing them too - I'll definitely do more in the future!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Can't beat a miniature railway for a day out. The hill looks like good exercise too!
Absolutely - it sure was good exercise!! ;D

Please highlight more of these small heritage railways. They need our support and are often overshadowed by the bigger more famous railways.

Light railway locomotives always look adorable! I'd love to visit one someday but they're basically non-existent in the USA :(
I agree!! Hope you can find some to visit soon :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Look in to 7 1/2 in railroads. There are many of them scattered around the usa with more being built every year.

In the UK we have a few American narrow gauge locomotives running on a narrow gauge line in Brecon in Wales.

A very enjoyable video. Beautiful clips. Very well put together with narrative and music. Thanks Sam.
One of the regular locomotives of this line is preserved at the Bluebell Railway, North London Railway class 75 no116, an 0-6-0 tank engine.

It’s funny long before this I saw a video about a similar video about a mining railway with an engine that looked like these ones
We need OO/HO versions of all the engines in this video

Not as small as I was expecting but great non the less.
Some people use n scale as a mini train for ho scale
what class of locomotive are they
The battery loco's were used in mostly Coal Mines
Yeah absolutely!
The wagon is original, iirc ran aground in around 1948/9.
Great video!
I want to go there
Very interesting real life video Sam :)
You should go to Statfold Barn one day.
That sounds great!! :D
