LUXURY YOUTUBE IS CHANGING (again), THE END OF AN ERA & goodbye JERUSHA COUTURE!

  • Luxury youtube is changing again, is it toxic and is it the end of an era? Jerusha Couture has recently made a video saying she is leaving youtube, Jerusha is one of the original luxury youtubers and for her to now be leaving because she has found the platform to have changed so much, for it to be toxic, and no longer being happy on the platform, it does kind of feel like the end of an era. There is a shift certainly when youtubers become full time, and sponsorships are something that can attract negative feedback, as well as it being a time of the world facing an economic crisis, all of these factors must be impacting on luxury youtube and where it currently stands.

For me, it was the constant flip flopping between “this is in, this is out”. For most of us, things that are “in” don’t necessarily flatter us (whether it’s the cut, the colour, etc.).

And her opinion about styles/cuts would change based on if it was considered trendy or not. It all lacked too much integrity for me.

I'd imagine that Amazon pays Shea pretty handsomely since she is one of their advertisers. She basically runs a giant Amazon commercial on her channel. I'm not interested AT ALL.

Thank you for the shoutout! Yes there has been so much change. The big 3 you mentioned I watch also and they haven't changed which is refreshing. As we both said we are happy that YT is not our career. I agree with sponsorships as long as you love the product, and the whole video isn't an ad it's ok. UA-cam is a lot of work.

I stopped watching Shea, Tamara, Josie, Lydia, Claire Chanelle, Mel in Melbourne plus others because they are all about making money to fund their luxury lifestyle. Too many adverts and "I wear it all the time", "I'm obsessed with ....." There is a lack of authenticity. Amelia, I love your content because you are realistic and grounded.

I stopped watching Tamara because she spent over TEN GRAND in ONE trip to Hermes and clearly resented the items and having to show them off, rolling her eyes and sounding bored. Meanwhile, I would've loved to have spent that money on a Master's degree to better provide for my family. It was sickening. I haven't watched anything posted by her since.

I am a failed consumer reporter and love to follow channels like yours because when I got into the industry of product reviewing and such I noticed a real disconnect between editors at magazines and what people on the ground really cared about. Watching you keeps me connected to that journey of understanding others and why we both like or don't like things; understand and appreciate what motivates us all to want things. Even though I think I'm never going back into the field professionally, I still love content like yours because it's just so real and relatable.
I feel bad about how decluttering is sort of sweeping the platform. The concept of minimalism, or down-sizing to re-discover one's "true style", has always been a thing; but I'm worried that it's become a "trend" right now just as much as over-consumption is often a constant "trend". I hope things calm down on that front sooner then later, only because I think if content creators "over-milk" decluttering then it will negatively reflect on the broader concept of mindful consumption.

I recently unsubscribed to many large luxury UA-camrs because they are no longer talking about the things they like and instead focus on selling something they’ve created. Or sponsored content. They’ll do unboxings of things that I don’t relate to. I don’t live in the English countryside. I started following smaller creators.

My abhorrent feelings towards commercials are one thing that led me to UA-cam years ago. Although I choose to watch hauls, luxury channels, etc, and I don't mind ads that naturally flow with the content I chose to watch. As I started consuming more UA-cam content, I loved supporting creators by watching them plug 1 sponsored product. I drew the line, stopped watching, and I have unsubscribed from some of my favorite true crime creators, as they now have at least 3 sponsors per video. I might as well watch these types of shows on other apps with commercials. There's aren't as often. Please don't feel bad about doing a sponsorship every now and then. Heck, I bet most of us are fine with one per video. I personally draw the line with more than 1 that interrupts the natural flow of the video.

I show my appreciation to my favorite UA-camrs for all the hard work they do in creating such fabulous content, in the only way I know how, membership or pledge. I was Steph’s very first member when she hit 100K because I know how exhausting it must be to put out quality vlogs week after week. Steph shows her gratitude by giving me extra perks, such as responding to all my comments and first glimpses of bags, parties and events etc, The same goes for you. I decided to make monthly pledges to you because you are seriously a fantastic UA-camr who tirelessly creates the best and most thought provoking vlogs out there and it’s a very small thing I can do to support your efforts. So, I guess what I’m saying is whether it’s a big channel or small channel, I base my viewership on the individual and my connection with her/him. Btw, I am very much enjoying your new venture, The Closet with Amelia” where you graciously give us a peek into your real life away from UA-cam! Much love Amelia! ♥️

I’m not sure….to me Jerusha always came across as quite big headed and arrogant and tried hard to have a lifestyle with the cars, name dropping, always bigging herself up being quite ‘showy’. Unless that was her being tongue and cheek and I missed the mark on that completely!
But, the likes of Lydia and Tamara etc are not really comparable to Jerusha. They have been around on UA-cam for years and have built a career from it. They did fashion shows, they got invited to Fashion Shows and magazines and events whereas Jerusha I don’t think fit that mould to be asked by people in the industry so it never really ‘shot up for her. Her direction is one way and theirs is another. Jerusha is old enough to realise when to take a break and has. I do think she is quite arrogant mind, i am just a watcher on UA-cam and never made content and was never really signed to an account in case some people decide to come for me! x

@@Peach87019 Even now with her so called ‘hiatus’ just screams another attention seeking attempt. Her whole attitude towards this ‘toxic’ culture stems from jealousy. She needs to constantly keep saying out loud her Real Estate work, her bestie Jen from Ell and Em (who lets face it, ignores her from embarrassment) She happened to have got married to someone who just worked hard. Her constant yapping about ‘I put Fashionphile on the map’ the constant constant ‘look at me’ and don’t get me started on her constant chat about her connections to Olivia Newton John There is zero humility in her. The ‘tribute’ from her Mum was also a joke. The woman is not dead. She is taking an attention seeking break from UA-cam. In the GRAND scheme of things of what is happening in parts of the world her pathetic ways are an embarrassment. Grow up Jerusha Couture.

This is a great topic Amelia. I often ask myself, what type of luxury content do I enjoy? Generally the answer is talk through video, what’s out there, what someone is loving vs not loving. I’m less interested in unboxings and what’s in my bags as I used to be.

People were struggling 10 years ago, but no one cared. 10 years ago I had 3 jobs, barely made a living, paid rent, etc. I watched luxury UA-cam, learned English and dreamed that one day I could afford those bags the bloggers were talking about. Now, 10 years later, I can afford more than I ever imagined. I also watch videos of luxury UA-camrs and I still enjoy it, but I prefer collecting real estate, playing "monopoly in real life", at least it's a real investment that generates monthly income. “People are struggling” is a very dangerous, guilt-inducing and manipulative phrase.

I"m debating starting a channel just for fun, since some people I've met have expressed some interest in my bag collection (though small) and style. But it'd mostly be for extra money, I currently like my full time job and want to pivot to starting my own business. trying to make a full time living off it seems like not the type of work that i want.
I feel like cassie's channel content kinda changed a lot, but it was around the 90k mark, but i think it's been pretty organic and tied to her interests. The pivot to a mixture of luxury news/commentary with a mix in of vlogs and hauls. Her content was a lot more similar to yours before that.

Ive watched fashion UA-cam for around a decade and seen many changes and small creators become big creators. Some have changed and moved from normal fashion into the luxury space as they’ve grown. Some have not. I do kinda miss seeing bedroom unboxings & less polished content if Im honest. It felt more real.
Personally I like fashion youtube in general. I like to see a mix of price points because thats how I shop.
I dont think anyone can or should expect content creators to work for free so expect sponsorships. I do however get annoyed if the sponsorship feels inauthentic. I watch channels because I like the person and the community as much as I do the content but being inauthentic just puts be off the creator in general.

Minks for All is divine. Minks and Meredith don't have many ads which is nice. Dayle is great too {Brisbane} Meredith has an outstanding bag collection...over 400 which I can watch over and over. I haven't watched Jerusha but she sounds genuine. I couldn't watch as many if I wasn't retired. I don't know how people manage. I love the smaller people. They always answer your comments. There’s a lot of drama & toxicity in all areas of YT. It’s really sad what the money does to some people. I’m going to say it, I find Mel in Melbourne so disingenuous. She try’s to hide her ads within her videos & you know she’s only filming the content to put the ad in. I stopped watching her years ago. I also stopped watching LVloverCC as well. She’s very sweet but I just can’t relate to the $75k Tiffany hauls & lifestyle. She also does a lot of brand deals. I honestly don’t mind brand deals, but be transparent about them, not try & disguise them.

Very insightful video, Amelia. There is so much to unpack! There will always be change in life and, although it can spark or denote growth, it can also make a person feel sad or lost. Like you said, it can mark the end of an era. I used to watch a young creator whose channel was about how to style a plus size body (like mine). She was very entertaining and she did makeup tutorials as well as fashion. However, she eventually started going in a different direction because she wanted to be healthier and more fit for her own lifestyle. At first, I felt sad because I enjoyed her content. However, I eventually realized that I was being selfish because I was making it about me. Just like many of Oprah Winfrey’s fans and audience members; they felt like she was abandoning them when she started talking about weight loss. I’m the kind of person who would never think of or actually criticize or leave negative comments like a troll towards influencers or content creators for whatever reason. They are real people with feelings just like me. This type of negativity along with feeling like they can’t keep up with trends or a need or desire to make money has to be exhausting and (like you pointed out) no longer fun or fulfilling for vloggers/creators. I still love watching luxury youtube for entertainment because I can’t afford high end handbags myself and I love living vicariously. I know there may come a time I might stop and move on to something else. I really wish Jerusha and other creators who are going through difficult times well. I pray that they will do what is best for them and their families. Thanks for sharing and for putting yourself out there for us.

I think the oversaturation of certain brands and certain kinds of bags has been my biggest reason from withdrawing from luxury UA-cam. While I can enjoy the joy that some of my favorite creators feel in unboxing their dream Hermes bag, I personally have no interest in this brand or most "heritage brands". I wish there was more content, unboxing and reviews of brands beyond Chanel, Hermes, or LV. There are so many other bags and when I'm contemplating a new purchase, I rarely find reviews. Speaking of, if anyone sees a good review of the Givenchy Voyou in the size medium please share.

Amelia Rose, I love and appreciate you and your channel! I just started my handbag “journey” and am enjoying curating a small collection of high end contemporary and luxury hand bags. It’s you and the other wonderful UA-cam ladies that you mentioned who have given me so much (free) advice and information that has helped me purchase bags that I’m totally loving and enjoying, so thanks for that! I also enjoy and have no issue with some sponsored content. Either I get turned onto something new, with a discount, or I can skip it. No big deal. Side note, I am leaving on Saturday from LA to visit your beautiful country with my family. We’re so excited!!!

Yours is pretty much the only luxury channel I watch because you’re very entertaining and I like your personality. I don’t buy luxury items, but I still enjoy watching you. With regard to sponsorships on any channel, I’ll only buy something I actually need.

I don’t kind a sponsorship here and there ; but it’s kind of luring you in to make you feel the video is about a bag or some luxury item ; then it’s just a sales commercial the rest of the video.
It’s frustrating and I’ve simply unsubscribed to some of these sales commercial “ buy this, it will change your life “ UA-camrs
    Great video

There seems to be quite a bit of keeping up with the Jones when it comes to some of the younger ladies on UA-cam . If one gets a Chanel than they all have to have a Chanel classic flap , if one gets a Birkin they all have to have one . Originality seems to be dying . I for one could care less about what's in anyone's bag although it is nice to know what fits . As far as Lydia goes , I used to enjoy her content then she got full of herself and that was a big turn off . I find Victoria and Josie similar in that aspect as well . I do enjoy your videos because your down to earth , which is refreshing .

Well you are right on with your observations. Additionally I can tell you that the finance videos have a lot of ads because the demographics of the people who watch them are more desirable to a certain sector of advertisers. I use to sell advertising for a living and finance magazines, financial radio programs, finance podcasts will attract advertisers looking to reach a certain demo. It’s is also not just the number of ads you see in that category but those advertiser are paying a higher price per thousand (CPM) for each ad.
    That is the advertising game.

Such a fab topic! And so interesting too. There used to be such a cosy charm about our “little” luxury sphere. People I think have become too big, forgotten where they started, and it’s all about more more more. I fully appreciate smaller channels that give in depth reviews and videos about a handful of things. Melinda is one of my favourites. She feels NORMAL! You are NORMAL! I don’t think people are in it for the right reasons these days. The AMAZON hauls!! This is it! Shea has turned into just an Amazon ambassador out of the blue!

Laine made a video about something similar, but regarding luxury brands gifting to influencers
Its quite upsetting to see influencer’s getting gifts and sponsorships of items they don’t use or interested on
It just feels hypocritical watching you tube videos that are pretty much advertising
I enjoy watching you tubers enjoying whatever they do. I don’t have unlimited resources to purchase all the luxury bags and watches i would like to, but i enjoy the content and get genuinely excited about it when i know the UA-camr is enjoying the luxury item.
    Please don’t stop doing unboxing
Its quite enjoyable to watch you and having fun through your videos.
Everytime i see your chanel bags from prior collections, give me joy. I know I would likely do not have them in my collection because I don’t buy pre owned (fear of super fakes) but seeing the bags in you videos is like having them in my closet. 😂
Also it guides me to purchase what I really like
Are you planning to purchase anything from chanel 24 a?
    Please never change ❤

For me, while i understand that people are struggling now, i will say this. My family has always struggled on and off for years. Once upon a time, we didnt even dream of having one luxury purse. Probably because of this, i dont necessarily like how people say things like "this is tone deaf, people are struggling!" There has always been people struggling. I never felt the need to remind people or guilt trip them for our family not doing well. If the content is not for you, find something that does work for you.

You hit the nail on the head. I think when UA-camrs get to that really high subscriber count they change forgetting that what got them to that number really was the content they were creating so when you change it’s disappointing. Not saying we expect you guys to put out the same all the time but completely changing isn’t fun. I love my big UA-camrs like Jerusha and Minnie but I also love my smaller channels. I also think luxury is more accessible to everyone with having so many more resellers out here. We don’t have to go to boutiques like before so there’s many more luxury channels and videos because I think luxury is more accessible to a lot more people. Just my opinion

About the reviews or unboxing, i have experienced that my chanel bag contents have the least views. I was surprised but then chanel classic flap is not something i will actually recommend to viewers. There’s a lot of brands out there that’s worthy of peoples money and time. And also, it’s been more than a year since I’ve uploaded a long video tho i shot a lot just waiting to edit. I guess my tardiness meant loss of interest in putting more stuff out there tho i believe what i share is really something im passionate about. I guess we will all come back to it but will reset… a lot of those haul content creators need to do that.

I agree with you on Shea Witney, also I got really sick of buying Birkins like Biros trend that was happening a year or 2 ago & that’s when I toned down. I still love channels where they collect Hermes & clearly just nerds ie nerdmes but it was more like ‘oh it’s a random Tuesday time for a Kelly’ that annoyed me. I think people are just bored, not just because of the environment but it started to feel like like one of those Netflix movies where the girl moves to New York or Paris as some kind of artist and is like super famous by episode 3

There's one UA-camr that I follow & she's from Australia...I love her content, but I have noticed that every video she puts out has a sponsor...at first I didn't give it much thought, but now I realized that's the only type of videos she uploads....it's become very annoying bc now her videos are profit focused versus enjoyment....I usually fast forward the sponsored portion of the videos, but now I'm at a point to completely abandon her channel all together, which is a shame bc I really enjoy her content 🤷🏾‍♀️
