  • The creative director of Chanel, Virgine Viard, has left after taking over from Karl Lagerfeld in 2019. Having been his right hand she was his natural successor, but has she really had the same impact he did, or any impact at all? Following her 5 year stint at the helm of Chanel she has left, for reasons unknown, and do we even care?

    I care. I also think that the current CEO...a HR person from Unilever was a dumb choice. So she can sell soap. But can she run a heritage fashion house without ruining the level of quality people expect from Chanel? I am 100% doubtful.

    • @qwertyyxoxo
      @qwertyyxoxo Місяць тому +3

      She has already ruined the level of quality people expect from Chanel, all she knows how to do is increase prices and lower quality to squeeze the most money out of the consumer and increase profit margins. Why???? CHANEL is privately owned. They don't have to care about that stuff as much, all I ask is that they bring back the quality so at least we can justify the hefty prices. Right now their leather is like plastic, their styles are boring and lackluster, and I am not feeling the fantasy I want to feel from the storied house of CHANEL. End rant

    Vv continued coco's legacy not karls.
    Super dacob has a source allegedly from inside chanel that said she maybe left because of bad working conditions and hr and leena nair trying to get rid her staff.
    Again it's just alleged but it makes sense and if so, she has my respect that's so punk.

    Idc about VV leaving, I want Leena nair to leave. Enough. She knows NOTHING about fashion, luxury, design, craftsmanship, artistry. She ruined Chanel and its heritage by being money-hungry, it's disgusting to watch as a fashion girlie and luxury lover.

    I’m not that versed on Chanel because I’m fairly new to luxury and the different brands. But, based on what I’ve been hearing, I feel that she came in at a disadvantage because of how large Karl Lagerfeld was. She would have had to mimic his style and creativity and not be herself. I think that she wasn’t able to or didn’t want to try to be him. I’m a softy therefore I feel badly for her. I hope that the decision to leave was hers. I understand that as creative director, she was responsible for designing 10 collections a year as well as the Haute Couture line. Wow, that’s a lot. Maybe she will start her own brand with her wearable esthetic. I wish her well.

    I wonder about the psychology of it. As you said, we’ve had many a conversation and raised eyebrow about the exorbitant price rises and this has put many of us off Chanel, or at least given us a less rosy view of the brand. I wonder if the bad taste that has left in our metaphorical mouths has made us less inclined to be moved by the designs. Have we responded to the price hikes by just not allowing ourselves to love Chanel as much as we might have done?

    In my opinion (because that is what the world of art is - merely subjective) the world sold Virginie Viard short. Karl Lagerfeld was an impossible act to follow - a one of a kind that we shall never see the likes of again (and I absolutely loved his vision for Chanel!). Virginie couldn't be him, nor did she want to be. As far as the sets that accompanied VV's collections, I loved every single one! She was quoted saying she never really liked how monolithic some of Karl's set designs were. And to be honest, I felt some of his were predictable and obvious. VV's Chanel was quieter and more understated and I appreciated this softness. She told so many absolutely BEAUTIFUL stories (my, what a storyteller she was!). From the oh-so-romantic rooftops of Paris, to the ethereal garden at Aubazine, to the regal and mysterious Chateau de Channoeuceao, to the poetic beauty of the Cocteau inspired collection at the quarry in Provence, to the intimate rock 'n roll designs filmed in an iconic nightclub.......I could go on and on. So who cares if she left? I do. I'll miss her and what she brought to Chanel!

    I care. I loved KL and I loved a lot of what VV did. I think there was an elegance and something that would truly suit every body shape in her collections. I liked the retrospective elements of her collections too - of course some collections were more exciting that others. My hunch is that she is perhaps not too happy with the direction Chanel is going in - I wonder how she feels about the clear drop in quality - maybe she felt it was stifling her creativity and stopping her from putting her stamp on the brand, maybe time to go before the money grabbing ruins the magic of Chanel. Great Video - thank you for the outlet to rant a bit about it! 😅

  • @ozge8044
    @ozge8044 Місяць тому +2

    I am not sure it is fair to compare her with KL. He was a legend and one of a kind. Also actually the the owners of Chanel were also CEOs at that time and they just let KL to do his magic. Now they have someone else as a CEO. And in my opinion she doesn’t look like she knows a lot about fashion. I think she merely focuses on profit rather then the allure or quality of the products.
    It might also be that Virgine was under a lot of pressure to design stuff that sells because of that.

      She's just not the visionary that were Coco and Karl ... not a good match for the brand in that sense or in the top designer position for that brand at least.
      She would be a good wingman to a visionary designer probably, but promoting her to Karl's position was a mistake simply.
      There is this theory that states that good workers get promoted until they are in a position they are not good at ... this would have been the case here, it seems to me.

You are ignoring the Wertheimer's desire to change the working conditions of the Cabine, think Dior scandal. Watch others who have been contacted by actual Haute Couture clients and what they are saying ---and not buying.

    I don't follow chanel that closely but it seems like she was brought in to just to (wo)man the ship while it went through a big change of Karl's death. She was associated with Karl via their long standing working relationship. Maybe chanel have found that person who they believe is ready to take on that job and make it their own properly. She did a good job with keeping profits up. Chanel's owners are now confident enough that they can put the brand into someone else's hands who will bring something extra as money is the owners goal not creativity, they've got someone to do both. Its giving Manchester United after Fergie left. Let's hope chanel's long term future is better than United's 😂

    As innovative as Karl may have been, do we have such short term memories that we forget that he was fatphobic, racist, anti #metoo, anti immigration, made absolutely horrendous comments about the holocaust, and didn’t believe people in gay relationships should be able to adopt? How about in the future, Chanel choose a hire that is unproblematic, inclusive and has their head screwed on and some decent morals. I, for one, would
    Like to see someone of the calibre of Virgil Abloh in the role but I doubt Chanel would make such an inclusive hire imo 🤷‍♀️

      It's been demonstrated that customers don't appreciate companies who claim to hold moral superiority.
      They go there for fashion and bags, not the gospel, apparently. The trend to have social issues dominate every aspect of life and economy seems to be dying too. It doesn't warrant the kind of social credit as it used to, so people are soon abandoning it.
