...Shame It Was Sold As A Stand-Alone Game (Far Cry New Dawn Review)

  • I was a big fan of Far Cry 5, but its season pass was a huge disappointment. As Ubisoft continue to spank the Far Cry IP with annualized releases, a truly compelling DLC offering would have helped buttress the brand for the future. Had New Dawn released as a DLC, everyone would be singing Ubisoft's praises. Instead, Far Cry New Dawn was forgotten almost as soon as it was released, a shame given that the title deserves more recognition than that.

    I loved New Dawn but no doubt some of that had to do with me skipping the last two entries into the Franchise. It has really great missions and really fun mechanics that let you be totally overpowered if you put the time in. Personally the grind wasn’t bad at all, I put in ~24 hours and was able to get pretty much all purple and most yellow guns since I did enjoy mastering each outpost. Wish it were longer but you’re right, would have made a much better “DLC.”

    I enjoyed the story for what it was: everything on the nose, with one-dimensional characters voiced by very good voice actors. I had someone to hate, I had something to be marginally intrigued by ... fair enough. Most games without a dialogue system (or at least a voiced protagonist) are going to struggle to do more than that.
    The shooting mechanics are great, and the first-person stealth works. That's the meat of the game, and if you're enjoying that part, the outposts and the expeditions don't feel like a grind. It's what I was there for anyway. It's "the loop."

They want to boot a franchise, or they want to do a "games for service" model, and decide that not wrapping up a story is a good idea. It really sucks. This happens way too often when playing AAA released games that in fact I don't even enjoy playing most of them anymore because I know I'm going to be disappointed with the ending.

    I thought it was great that for Farcry 5 they dropped you in middle of nowhere at start with no instructions so that you can go anywhere you like and nothing is gated to you
    I'm not sure why they decided to axe this by imposing a system counter to the best thing about Farcry 5.

    Just had to have patience. I got for like 8 bucks with PS+. I do agree though, its definately an expansion for FC5, not really a new game. Should have been marketed as such, it probably would have been more popular and not gotten such bad reviews from people who were anticipating a whole new game.

    I actually liked FCND way more than FC5. Everyone keeps praising the story in FC5, but I thought it left so much unexplained. John Seed could somehow foresee that the world would collapse in nuclear annihilation? Okay, but why the violent uprising? Why try to kill everyone in the county? What was the motivation for that?
    The formulaic setup of each region also really bothered me in that game. Clear outposts etc until you reach a certain threshold and suddenly they can easily capture you with bliss darts without any effort and you have to escape from their different compounds. This happens 6-7 times without them just outright killing you. Come on.
    There is also almost zero backstory. Remember those short flashbacks in FCND where you got a glimpse of different characters past? They weren't much but I thought they brought some depth to their motivations that was sorely missing in FC5.
    I also really liked the tier system with the guns. It added a sense of progression in classic RPG style although I can see why that aspect could rub some people the wrong way.
    The pricing of the game was however way off. It should definitely have been $20 either if it was a DLC or standalone game.

  • @7TonyMontana7
    @7TonyMontana7 5 років тому +6

    You're not alone.
    I didn't like the tiered enemies/weapons.
    It was 100% padding and just limited your weapon choices, especially since you couldn't mod the weapons.

    I had to pause after a minute. Far Cry is the best fps series out right now. Nothing boring at all.
    Tell me another fps game where I can climb and repel mountains, fly choppers, stealth kill, go loud with guns or a vehicle? And the companions are more diverse and optional.
    You should be on your knees thanking Ubisoft!

  • @RossMalagarie
    @RossMalagarie 5 років тому

    Skill Up good review and I agree New Dawn should have been a FC5 story DLC. Second, at time stamp 22:05 you showed the weapon list with all the guns you did not obtain by the end of the story and said you didn't have the guns with the "little hammer" over it. Those are the guns you have the items to craft, so all you had to do was craft, not pay real world money for and you would have had a lot more of the guns. The few guns that don't have the "little hammer" or you do not own means you have some of the crafting items but still have to get some more. Then you can craft those guns too.

    Well, if you waited 6 weeks, it WAS $20 DLC. For that price, I thought it was a great deal. I thought the expeditions were great. The maps were excellent, and it was a great break from Hope County. Stealth killing 20 enemies on a huge map, versus 6 at an outpost is heaven for a stealth player like me.
    SkillUp has the same continued Ubisoft frustration that I have. They always make games that SEEM to be on the cusp of something special. Yet they always disappoint. They seem content making mediocre games often, instead of investing time and money to make something truly great.
    Personally, I loved Joseph Seed. I wanted more of him in the last game. The premise for FC5 was one of the best ideas for a game I’ve ever heard. They really blew it with developing the characters though.

    Remember that time when Naughty Dog was originally making a Single-Player DLC and was included in their Triple-Pack/Explorer Pack (Triple-Pack was more of a Season Pass til we find out that ND ditched the DLC Paid Maps/weapons model in favor of cosmetic ones), which was later turned into a Standalone game in form of "The Lost Legacy"?
    those who have owned the Pack essentially got a new game at a reduced price (as the game cost 40 US Dollars) while the rest of the people who pre-ordered The Lost Legacy got the entire Jax series or just bought the game at a regular price?
    Imagine if Ubisoft included New Dawn as part of their Season Pass.

    • @dragonbornexpress5650

      Or it could even be accessed in Far Cry 5 later on, but you would have to complete the resist ending with at least 50% overall game completion without dying in the world. This would then open up a new tab in the menu, which completely transforms the screen into the loading screen of New Dawn. For everyone else, the DLC would actually be way less, at 20 bucks, which New Dawn probably would have been goddamn praised for all the way. Once you complete that DLC, you would actually have a challenge to complete with the Judge character, formerly the Deputy from FC5. This challenge would be called "Outstanding job...Deputy." which is a game quote from the Sheriff in FC5. To complete this challenge would actually require you to piece together the Judge's entire past as the Deputy, and to restore the Judge to the rookie police officer that he (using he for consistency and simplicity's sake) once was. Once you piece together the former Deputy's past enough, he'll actually ditch his Judge alter ego and transform once more back into the Deputy. He'll still use his old bow from time to time, often for stealth, but when he wants to go guns blazing and YOLO at enemies, he prefers to use a custom AKM to shred his enemies apart. He does this all the while wearing his old Deputy uniform from before shit hit the fan. He still wears a mask, this time something more modern, but he still expresses his emotions and..well..expressions through his actions. For instance, when he sees an innocent person, he prefers to save them or knock them out rather than kill them, and he would actually get pissed off at your character if you decide to shoot innocent people anyways. He won't kill you, but if you kill more and more innocents purposelfully, he will refuse to revive you if you're down. He would eventually get so pissed off at you murdering innocents that he would literally leave you, and would retreat to Prosperity in order to vent out his anger towards you.

    Bought it on sale for $20. Didn't think it was terrible, and even had some fun...but it reminded me of the Ubisoft mentality when it tried to bring in story and/or "the stakes" way too much. If FC5 has the same respawning enemies issue as New Dawn, then I understand why I didn't rush to get that game at release. I appreciate the standalone offering, but I think they hurt themselves with that initial asking price.
