It's fine if you just sold your multi-million dollar home in Cali, then you could afford to live here, but for working class people the only jobs are retail, hospitality or construction, to build more homes for more people to move here. To rent here on a cashiers salary, forget about it!
He didn't mention the cancer rates. A bunch of teenagers died recently because the mining water mixed with the drinking water. Oh wait, they are always mixed.
To be clear, you take Rt 17 North from Phoenix/Scottsdale to get to the exit for Prescott (I think about 75 miles), then it is about 30 miles to the town square. You go through Prescott Valley first which feels more like a lengthy strip mall. But the town is charming and while real estate prices are rising (as they are everywhere), there is still land/real estate available within reason. The surrounding area is beautiful and rich with Southwestern culture and history, and wildlife. Stay at the Hassayampa Hotel in the town square to see if you get visited by the ghosts - the hotel is haunted! We live in North Scottsdale, and have considered relocating but the major drawback is the distance back to Phoenix. If you travel, then you will likely travel back to Sky Harbor Airport. The only major commercial airline that flies out of Prescott Regional Airport is United. If that works for you then great. Also, medical facilities, doctor availability should be considered. We have friends that live there year round, and some that have second homes. The last time we were there a herd of pronghorn antelope trotted across the road in front of us. So you can make it work if you want to, to get away from the big city life.
Couldn't have said it better! Though regarding the airport, let me add that there are only 2 flights daily - L.A. and Denver - using small, regional jets; but very efficient shuttle service to/from PHX Sky Harbor. Antelope sightings are rare, so you were lucky. Cheers!
You are absolutely right - but to attract young families we need to overcome the reluctance to build sorely needed affordable housing. As for the traffic, I lived in Dallas, TX for 25 years, 1/4 mile from the famous 635/75 "Mix-Master" - now that's what I call traffic!
If you think Prescott's traffic is bad try going into downtown Phoenix or near skyharbore Airport from 7 am to 9 going towards it and away from it after 3 pm. Phoenix has half of Arizona's population in one small area.
Prescott was once a nice city in the 70’s and prior, not so much any more. Whiskey Row is mostly gift shops and crowded sidewalks. The traffic is horrendous, and they replaced the Sambos with Denny’s. Don’t even think about going to Lynx Lake, it’s completely commercialized and crowded.
There are some deals to be had on vacant land in the Williamson Valley corridor - an area about 6-12 miles north of downtown of Prescott, with Chino Valley and Paulden beyond that.

If being RIGHT isn’t for you then go to Calif, I hear they lean hard LEFT. Heck, you can even live on the streets, get up to $900 of free food, and pee in the streets, been to downtown LA or SD lately, it’s lovely.
BS the retired people are all out in droves on the days and times when the working people have time to be out, our roads are clogged with citiots that all drive like they’re still on a freeway but on a two lane road. Not sure what they thought what it would be like by cramming so many blue hairs and family that followed them in what was a small town with limited roads and stores. It doesn’t work very well.
Have definitely seen difference in the past 20 yrs - especially peak tourist times w/Marathon & Off-Road, etc. bringing in crowds, and street closures an issue since there are so few "get-around" options.
