I have a question. Do I have to sleep on a pillow at all? I never used it. I dont have any diseases. I feel a lot of stress in my shoulders but again when I started sleeping on a pillow, my shoulders started to hurt. Im just confused. I guess I should go for a good pillow like in video?

That is the plan...changing lives. Thanks for your kind words.
I no longer use pillows. I just grab a towel and roll it up to a thickness that supports my neck and makes me comfortable. It's made a huge difference in how I feel when I wake up
Excellent!

OMG! Life changing!!!!! I've been suffering from cervicogenic migraines for 5 years, and tinnitus in one ear for 3 years. I was diagnosed with cervical spine instability and after watching this video, I've realized my sleep position is the cause!!!! THE ONLY CAUSE!!! Over time I've literally damaged the ligaments in my neck from improper sleeping!!! I've tried these techniques for two nights and my ear ringing is nearly undetectable for the first time in three years. I had some accidental good days with the ear ringing and i knew it had something to do with my sleep position but I COULD NOT figure out which way to lay, or how to lay. Now that I understand the "why" of neck anatomy and the other things you cover in the video, I'm now able to focus on what I need to do and like I said already see significant improvement in the tinnitus!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm not in search of the correct kind of neck pillow.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Have you found the right pillow yet?! I’ve tried so many and still don’t know what kind is best for these type of migraines.
Thanks Dr. Jon Saunders. There have been times when I feel like my neck nerve pain is healing, but my neck was burning worse than ever this morning. A touch of ice made it that much worse! Really good tip using a pillow to support the neck rather than the head. I will try rolling up my softer pillow tonight, if that doesn't work I will try finding a barrel pillow!
It may take some getting used to but I know that sleeping the way I have been (often supported with my arm underneath my head) just isn't working for me anymore. I have some scoliosis so I think that, along with poor seating and sleeping habits is what has caused my neck issues. It's been over 1.5 months. Will give it another 2 weeks or so of neck exercises before seeing a specialist.
I hope you find lasting relief soon!
@@drjonsaunders Thank you! 😊🙏
Hi Dr. Jon - You indicate the pillow itself doesn't matter as long as you position it properly. I was hoping to see some examples using a variety of pillows. Please consider adding!

Dr. Jon, many thanks for the video. I have radiating pain on left side because of broad based c5/c6 disc bulge of 11/6mm buldge. I feel better standing than sleeping which is meant to be healing time. At position should I sleep? Using a roll type pillow where the head should be? Nothing below that?

Is there a preferred sleeping position with a CPAP? My score is bumping up over 5 although my mask is fitting properly. I can't seem to get it down consistently.
Unfortunately it can be different for everyone...all the best!
Do you recommend "cervical pillows"? I've always been a stomach sleeper and I'm trying to move to my back. I tried your trip on positioning my flat pillow vertically but I could not get comfortable and I felt my lower back stretching.
Yes cervical pillows can be good when used properly...small side for back sleeping and larger side for side sleeping...sleeping position change is difficult and a long process...don't give up, start in the position you want to be in and you will be able to change it over time...best wishes!
@@drjonsaunders .
What's the best pillow for a side sleeper with DDD C6 C7. I bought expensive pillows that were not for me. Please advise. Thx
Pillow selection is not easy and should really be based on your size and postural pattern - please ask your DC or PT for best recommendation.
Hi, thanks for the info. I'm not getting more than 2 hours sleep at a time without having to get up and warm it up. I'm aware that after 2 weeks of this that my body is going to be struggling to repair itself. But I kind of feel that having any sleep pills that would knock me out would just mean that the damage would be going on longer than it should do through the night. And maybe make it worse?
Focus on sleeping in the correct position...please watch my newest video on pillows. Best wishes.
What is your advice on beds with adjustable head and leg capabilities? Does raising your head take the pressure off of the neck? Thanks.
They can work in certain circumstances. Best wishes.
Yes Lordth!
:)
I have sleep apnea but can’t tolerate the CPAP. If I use a pillow or towel like this it seems to make my sleep apnea even worse. Do you have any recommendations? I’ve lost the curve in my neck & have painful degenerative disc disease and arthritis. Also, do you recommend denneroll cervical traction therapy at all? What I’ve been doing is stacking 3 pillows up so I can sleep more upright. Which seems to help the sleep apnea but not the neck pain.
The priority should be a good night's sleep, so whatever you need to get that should be your goal. There are exercises you can do to help your neck. A denneroll is very helpful when indicated.
Hi Dr. Saunders:
I have been diagnosed with cervical stenosis. I have pain on left side of neck, shoulder & down left arm. The pain level is hi & approaching doctor talk of neck surgery & possible fusion. I have done PT & meds. & 2 epidural s that did not work. I need to find pain relief that will keep me from surgery. Can these exercises keep me from surgery or any others?
They may, but you need to work hard at them. Please check out some of my other videos for suggestions.
Same diagnosis...i literally have to knock myself out in order to sleep. I will definitely, try this tonight!!!
I slept on my stomach for 25 years and finally started having pain and discomfort. Its still the most comfortable way to sleep, but I wont allow myself to do it. When i became intentional about side sleeping keeping my spine straight, my symptoms greatly reduced.
Thanks for sharing.
I would love to know how to pick out the right pillow or do you recommend a good one? I tend to sleep on my side and I tend to get migraines.
Here you go: :) ua-cam.com/video/W084_TFiP4g/v-deo.html
I’ll give your side sleep advice a try tonight! Thanks 😊 What pillow is best for side sleep?
One that supports your neck. :)
do you recommend the same thing with people that have scoliosis?
Yes this will help with reducing the stress in your neck.
I have very bad posture and tried sleeping with my neck on one of those memory foam “neck support pillows” like the one in this video. I woke up every time unable to move my head because of the neck pain it had caused. Should I still use this kind of pillow or should I use a thinner one? I even sleep well without a pillow but I don’t know if that’s any good. I just want to fix my posture and get a good night’s rest
One of the most important aspects of pillow selection is making sure you have the correct size...all the best!
@@drjonsaunders Thank you!
Hi there. I was using one of those pillows like your self. I believe it caused me to get cervical dizziness. I threw mine out. Please let me know if you had any more problems 🌼
what pillow do you recommend using? the one you have in your video? Whats the name of the pillow?
It is hard to make a recommendation, as it may be different for different sized people...the best one will be one that supports your neck and natural curve...hope this helps...best wishes.
I have scoliosis and a very forward head position. Hump is at the top and middle of thoratic spine. I have to sleep in my recliner. Too hard to turn to the side to get out of my adjustable bed. Have issues with forward head posture there also. So of course have to sleep on my back. I have had compression fractures in the upper spine. How do I cushion my neck to sleep with out pain in one side of the other of my neck by morning. Sleep the best with a U shaped neck rest pillow that is firm foam that wraps around my neck area. I have to have a child size small as I am a pretty small person. And it is still a little bit loose around my neck and head. I am 80 yrs old. Received a severe whip lash that affected my neck and upper back in 1985. Degenerative arthritis set in not long after the injury.
I'm sorry to hear - sounds like the U - shaped pillow is working for you. Best wishes.
Hi John, I recently used one of those carved out pillows. After a few months I believe it caused me to have cervical dizziness. I’m afraid to now use a pillow in my neck now.
Do you know the type of pillow I’m on about?

Right back at you! :)
Found your video after diagnosing myself with cervical radiculopathy (going on 4 weeks now). I've intuitively realized the tips you've discussed in this video. Is there a pillow you recommend? I think I'll need more than just a tube along my neck. :) This all started FROM my sleeping in a bad position - woke up a week before Veteran's day unable to turn my head (I LOVE MY STOMACH SLEEPING but haven't been able to since. It's out of the question now). Once the muscles felt better, I had an ache and pulling feeling going down behind my left armpit/arm and I've had tingling in my hands. I noticed that the pain was subsiding day by day until I stupidly went to the gym to lift and tightend those muscles - it's also aggravated when I'm cold/shivering. Heat helps and it's better after a night's sleep also but I really need a better pillow. What do you recommend for both head and neck? Thank you!
