    Cycads are a very old species of plant. The used to cover almost everywhere in the past but are increasingly are becoming rare. The aids do not have a hard shell, meaning they germinate relatively faster. Sago Cycads are a very cold hardy species. And there is one specific species which is presumably e tin es in the wild. There is only a line male who was brought back by an English explorer. We have clones the plant but as the mothers egg becomes the offsprings cell we cannot recreate the species. Because the mitochondria of the offspring come from the mother. However we can cross pollinate and breed the offspring until we get one that is genetically similar. However it would not be a true member of the species. People still hope that there may be a lone female somewhere. These plants are also heavily poached for collectors. These plants are truly ancient and deserve respect for the worlds they have seen before we came about!!

    These ancient species have a great appeal. I already have about a dozen sago and cardboard palms, though I’m not sure how to tell if mine are the Japanese Cycas Revoluta or the more local Taiwanese Cycas Taitungensis. I guess can just ask the garden center if they know. Thanks for your knowledgeable overview…

      Seaweed Extract or liquid Kelp, or Fish Emulsion is best, for fertilizing Cycads. These fertilizers being organic, as natural fertilizers will not burn the leaves.

    I appreciate the video and information. We were given a Sago (female) palm by an old gentlemen who farmed these to sell. It was our house warming gift just larger than a pup. 18 years later, it had grown well until a tenant attempted to cut it down and destroy it. I was able to cut away some pups and replant them. I was viewing your video for help in keeping them alive to grow them in our new home. I wanted to share with you that this neighbor farmer told us (and we used for many years) that Bloodmeal was great for the sago. It did work, but I believe I will give (if I can find) fish emulsion on my pups. How long should I wait (if any time) to start feeding the transplanted pups? Thanks again and greetings from Central Texas!

    Thank you, Sir, for your knowledge and expertise. I'm an avid fossil collector, have been ever since I was about 9 years old. I happened upon your video because I wanted to see if the pattern I saw on one of my fossils might be the pattern produced when a cycad branch falls off. I ended up learning a lot more than I thought I would! Thanks again, David!👍👍😉

    I bought one from Walmart, a Sago Palm, and it had to be repotted because it was glued down and it didn't like that. All it's foliage turned yellow and died. What do I do? I don't want it to die. Should I put it in full sun right now? Does it not want a lot of water?

    Awesome info, i'm renting a place with a 5 foot Queen Sago (Cycas revoluta) recently had a flush, so excited then depressed by the demolition job by a thousand grubs. Little did I know what those blue moths were doing ffs. I picked the grubs off but the damage to the foliage was devastation!!! I was wondering what would happen if I just cut off all the foliage and let it do its thing and wait for the next flush and apply a pre-emergent insecticide... someone said they grow 1inch a year so the one in the backyard must be 60 years old wow.

    Can you please tell me what is the clear gel the sago palm developes. What is that?

    • @EarthWorksJax
      @EarthWorksJax  5 років тому +1

      The gel-like substance that Sago's (Cycad revoluta) produces, serves as a pathogen protection. The gel is produced by the Caudex (trunk) sometimes when the leaves have been trimmed off, or if the Caudex has inflicted damage (injury). The gel substance serves to protect any pathogens (diseases/bacteria) from entering into the tissue at the prunned or damaged area. It is totally fine. It will harden, in a week or so, then you may scrape it away!

      Earth Works Jax Thanks a lot. Do you have any recommendations on scale and pesticide? What work best to prevent yellowing and maintain a healthy green foliage? I appreciate any advice.

    • @EarthWorksJax
      @EarthWorksJax  5 років тому +1

      Southern Agricultural Palm Nutritional foliar feed! Mix 3 to 4 cap fills with this product, into 1 gallon of foliar feed into the ground evenly around the truck. Also, you can spray the entire Palm with the Palm Nutritional foliar spray, the foliage (leaves), stems, trunk, etc. It is best to apply the foliar feed (spray) early in the day, as the stomata (tiny holes/pours) in the leaves are open, to absorb the fertilizer. There are a number of insecticides/pesticides you can use, this depends on the type of scale on the Palm. Sometimes you can use soap and water in a spray bottle, which will suffocate the scale, then the scale can be wiped off the Palm.

I did some trimming with a surgical knife to remove any yellow or dead leave foliage for appearance looks, so it won’t look dead or burnt the plant looks spotted like it’s suffering nutrients so I bought Epson Salt I bought Blood Meal and Iron. I grow them in a pot. Thanks for the help Ima do my best to keep these sago king palms living.
