The wild thing is I think artists are putting effort into one very catchy verse or chorus for TikTok and then forgetting or not putting effort into the rest of the song. Example: Unholy by Sam Smith

You know what? It seems like any song that comes off of the platform and becomes popular, the radio tends to push it to levels where the song will become even more unbearable. Like I said before, I work at a job where there’s a radio present (it’s a small kitchen area I work at) and the radio station plays some of these same songs every. single. time. Imagine that torture.

@Quentin “Bring the Nu Metal” Childs. Yo whats up my fellow Nu Metal homie
I’m from the U.K. and half of the Radio music over here is like nothing happened in music past 1996. And the other half of music on the Radio in the U.K. is like nothing happened in music pre 2010.
It’s like in the U.K., they want to forget music that appealed to the millennials.
We’ve got Boomer stations a plenty in the U.K., if you want PoP music from the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s then you’re all good. We’ve also got a lot of stations that appeal to Gen Xers that love 80’s and early 90’s PoP or Indie music.
There is basically a whole generation of 40 somethings in the U.K. that worship early to mid 90’s British Indie music, Oasis etc etc .
And there is a whole generation of 50 somethings that worship anything 80’s in the U.K..
Then we’ve got stations that appeal to Gen Z, (don’t know why considering they are the generation that would least listen to the radio), that play PoP music from 2010 onwards.
The only station that would appeal to the Millennials in the U.K. is Kerrang, the only problem with that though is they mostly play to the PoP Punk and Emo crowd, and I hate that shit. So if you want to pretend it’s 2006 or 2007 then Kerrang is for you.
      U.K. radio is astoundingly bad.

      @@nu-metalfan2654 That’s terrible, man.
By the way since you’re from the U.K., I’ve been hearing about a burgeoning scene occurring over there right now. It’s a type of post - punk, but more in a talk - sing type of style (sprechgesang). I call it “Sprechgesangcore”. What do you think about it, if you ever heard of any of the bands? It’s pretty cool, in my eyes; some of the most original - sounding music I’ve heard in awhile.

    • @nu-metalfan2654
      @nu-metalfan2654 2 роки тому

@@quentinbringthenumetalchil5125 No I’ve heard nothing of a new music scene over here.
Here in the U.K., people do love their Post Punk and Indie stuff, though. I don’t get it though.
The U.K. is a very less is more and primitive country when it comes to music, bands in the U.K. don’t steer too much from tradition, and like to keep things simple and boring.
Which is why I gravitate to the US for my music because it’s very grand and just full of creativity, and US bands tend to not focus on tradition as much.
In the U.K. Boomers and Gen Xers feel like the Millennials are too Americanised in the U.K.
Imo it’s because the British bands coming through from 1996 to 2009, during that Millennial Era was appealing to the Gen Xers.
So the UK millennials was seeing what was going on in the US music from 1996 to 2009 and felt more apart of that, and so do I.
US and U.K. music are very different, I feel the US bands tend to focus and target their music on different subcultures, I don’t know if the idea of a subculture is still a thing in the US because over here in the U.K. it’s not.
The last actual British subculture was the Chavs that loved U.K. garage music.
U.K. garage music was like the only British music scene that did appeal to the Millennial generation.
U.K. garage music is like a hybrid of Rap and Dance music that came from the 90’s underground, and went full on mainstream in the U.K. by 1999/2000, but UK garage fans say that the scene died by 2005.
The U.K. Chav subculture would still be a thing for 10 more years as the Chav fashion style was by 2005 just the Millennial teenage/20 something fashion.
Since 2005 the U.K. hasn’t had another subculture in music.
I don’t know if the US still has music subcultures or if the idea of a subculture is dead today, I don’t know.

I felt a little bit of whiplash when hayloft started blowing up on tiktok, but was overall happy for the band and was excited to see the sequel they released (which i thought was an interesting take on the new found fame.)
it was unfortunate when i got to see them live because the lack of people who knew their songs (even the other popular ones) was…disturbing? the venue was sold out, but the crowd was just so lame. lots of phones, everyone went crazy for hayloft and verbatim, but besides that there was a lot of disrespectful crowd edict. made me feel weird being the only one where i was standing who actually seemed to be excited for their other material. Happy to see more people talking about this, great content as always 👐🏼

Mary on a Cross blowing up is good because the snippet is pretty well representative of the rest of the song but what kills me is the nightcore’d first 10 seconds of Year Zero (BELIAL BEHOMOTH BEELZEBUB ASMODEUS SATANAS LUCIFER) because that version is not made by the band nor is it representative AT ALL of the rest of the song (the chorus is much catchier than the intro). Idk it pisses me off. Also like nobody realizes that those songs are by the same band

Its such a shame this video has so little attention, the whole internet needs to be aware of this nonsense that is ruining culture and internet content. I find it so annoying that tiktok """"music artists"""" will find some actually good song that doesnt need a slowed/sped up version, then add their stupid touch to them, put it in some slop video, and, act like they made some masterpiece. even worse, they'll probably get more attention than the original song. Then, it gets slowed or sped up even more by other """artists""" to the point where nobody can enjoy the original song anymore. Death. Culture is being ruined because now it seems to rely on the not even original form of song.

When I saw House of Memories blowing up, I thought 'oh thats cool, it's a super underappreciated song from DOAB, nice that it's receiving the attention it deserves'. Only realised it was a TikTok hit when Brendon hastily dropped the House Of Memories EP on Spotify with a sped up and slowed down version. It would've been interesting if there was an acoustic version of the song instead but it really highlights how vibes matter more than substance even on songs that deserve the new attention

You know what's gonna be sad? When one day, all the delusional people on Tik Tok (Who enjoy all of the sped up remix versions of songs) will call the remixed/ sped up versions of songs as the ACTUAL song. Imagine for example, Tik Tok speeds up '39 from Queen. And it blows up on Tik Tok. I'd personally be somewhat happy because I'm a Queen fan (And have been for 3 years) and it's a pretty underrated song, but if it gets to a point where the sped up version is recognised as the ACTUAL version, I'll lose my mind.

To me, the TikTok virality of music is whatever to me.
Better yet, whatever style of music I hear is not making me hate it as much as it should. It's just whatever to me.
Perfect example is "Bloody Mary" by Lady Gaga. Her song blew up on TikTok due to the sped up version being used to generate interest in the Wednesday Addams Netflix series (and because of the popular dance scene).
But, surprisingly, I like the original version, the sped up version and the slowed reverb version all the same. To me, the latter two are just accents to an already popular song.
I understand why people may feel a certain way about TikTok, but I just don't have the anger in me to criticize it when there are bigger and better things for me to complain about.

    Oof
The "using your cellphone during the whole concert" thing was before Tik Tok and I hate it.
Like, it's okay to take some photos or even film a video, but that's it. People's logic is to be filming 24/7 so then you can watch it again and again, but what about the experience? I'm not having any fun if I'm constantly holding my phone trying to have a good recording of the show. Maybe it's that I personally haven't been to much concerts. Idk.
But I completely agree with the way poeple make songs go viral. Yes, if I were an artist I'd be cool with it, since I know that when people hear my song on Tik Tok, no matter which version they've heard there, they go to the original and then that one goes viral. But, at the same time, I wouldn't care to put another version of my song just cause people are on my ass about it. If you want to listen to the song listen to the original, and if you don't like it go to Tik Tok.
I also don't get the "listen to the snippet part of a song a 1000M times". How can't you get sick of it? If I hear a song that I like and always hear a part multiple times, then, when I listen to the whole piece, it would stick out a lot and ends up really annoying me.
I'm not much into social media, but this is more of a general view on it, and not as if I were against it

What bugs me about this new TikTok generation is not so much the new music they vibe with... I expect every generation should have musical interests of their own separate than what came before... and having said that, I've seen this trend where TikTok viral trends where they take an older song, say a song from the 90's and it's sped up and pitch shifted to sound generally faster and higher pitched... like people dancing to "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus... hey that was my song growing up, get yer own music you darned kids lol

I mean most people have a terrible taste in music, we all like different things, different strokes for different folks, that’s all.
But there is just more bad music out there than good music, it’s not just music but movies as well, there are more bad movies than good movies out there.
But then again what is “good taste” when it comes to music?, is it a positive review from music critics?, because imo I don’t think so, most music critics are very snobbish to anything thats macho or crass.
Imo good taste in music is anything that’s not boring or annoying (like top 40 PoP, Indie music, Trap/Mumble Rap, or Radio music), or anything that’s weird or cringy (like Glam, Punk, Goth, Emo, or New Wave music). So if you don’t like any of that shit then you have good taste, but that’s just me.

Hit it spot on. TikTok is absolutely ruining the music industry and the way people view music in general. It’s not about music or art anymore, it’s just about content, just about whatever you can cut and squeeze into a 15 second clip and that’s it. Specifically with the sped up/slowed down stuff, it was a BIG red flag for me to see bands like Panic! At The Disco release these stupid “remix” EPs with the sped up versions, and to see them charting higher than the original songs sometimes. It’s honestly appalling with TikTok is doing to our attention spans, the consumption of art and music, and our society as a whole.

I don't think your video comes off as preachy or like you're on a high horse or anything like that.
However, the general argument (not your argument specifically) tends to get really gatekeep-y, and can come off like "hey, you're enjoying music wrong".
Personally, I'm big into listening to artists' deep cuts, knowing the stories behind the songs, music theory, etc. all of that "deep" music stuff. But it's also totally okay just to like a chorus because it catches your ear and makes you wanna dance.
And TikTok or not, people are gonna miss the point of some songs no matter what you do. How many couples have played U2's "One" at a wedding, or how many people think "Semi-charmed Life" is a happy song.
I do enjoy watching some of the record companies thrown off their game by what has come from TikTok, so there's certainly some bias on my part.

I went to my god-sister's 16th birthday party 2 weeks ago, she and her friends are VERY into tiktok. They had a live DJ and they would scream in excitement when a steve lacy or burna boy song came on... and knew NONE of the verses, just the hooks/choruses, and I can't even give them a pass for burna boy because we're all from the Caribbean and understand what he's saying very clearly. Also I was talking to this goth chick at a flea market booth selling band merch and she talked about liking Ghost and said her favourite song was mary on a cross, to which I replied "Oh from Seven Inches of Satanic Panic? I like Kiss The Go-Goat more, it's faster," To which she replied, "Seven Inches Of What?" Then I knew what I had gotten into.
Being interested, invested and willing to explore the music you like is really important. I found Brand New because of a video you made with limosine, liked it, checked them out and before you know it im buying their vinyls. I also met one of my old E-Girlfriends (cringe, i know) on the Brand New subreddit, and because of her and the Brand New Radio on spotify i found amazing small bands like The Republic Of Wolves, Out of Service, Microwave, Prince Daddy and The Hyena, Choir Vandals and so much more. All because I took interest and looked for what I liked.
Take the initiative. Music isn't just a hobby, it shows you more media, takes you places, and being fans of the same small artist is one of the tightest bonds you can have.
