- Today my daughters came to the farm to do chores while Brenda and I were away, and my daughter Trudy decided to take our Belgian Mare (Lady) for a ride! They talk about riding drafts and the difference between riding draft horses vs smaller horses.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Hello from New Hampshire. Happy 2025! Somehow I missed this video and it brought back fond memories of my own horses. So great to see Trudy and Abby with Lady. I appreciated Trudy announcing to Lady when she entered the stall to brush her. That was always drilled into my head. That a horse needs to hear your voice, especially in a straight stall. I would have never dared to mount a horse in the barn. I appreciate these horses are huge. I owned a 1/2 Thoroughbred 1/2 Percheron and had to have a place outside in order to be able to get my foot in the stirrup. And Trudy was riding bareback. My Percheron was so round and I was so small, I would have rolled right off! I rode English. A 3 years old, my horse took a wide saddle tree, a #2 shoe and a 6" bit. I almost fainted when the vet told me my Razzy would mature at 7 years old! But he was a joy, a willing jumper and my best friend.
Great video Trudy and Abby
I love how you two took over their channel and just keep on rolling!! Lol! Nice that lady is getting exercised!!
I started asking for a horse at the age of two, finally bought myself at 30 and still have one at 65+. It’s been a lifelong love affair.
Hello ladies I watch your dad's show all the time I see you guys working in the fields with long side with your mom and dad and I think that's great I love horses my name is Dwayne from Saskatchewan Canada
You asked about my experience with horses. I could write a book! Now, though, at 73, I no longer have horses and miss them a lot. Watching you all helps me stay connected with them. Thanks for sharing.
Yes! I am 74 and in Australia. All mine I bred in the 80's long gone. Always there were plenty of good horses, now I would still get on, but only good ones, lost all my muscle tone and not fit for the youngsters any more. Jim keeps us connected doesn't he?
Hi your houses beautiful and strong bodies
Y'all have the gumption of your dad, the beauty of your mother, and the exuberance of a couple of kids. Great video! And thanks for the memories!
As a child, my granny and 2 of my aunts had horses. Neighbors had horses. When I was 16, I got my own horse. After having my daughters, we had more horses. Our family was very involved in the local saddle club. Multiple trail rides, local and out of state. Parade after parade, all around our area. We all were active in our local county saddle club. My oldest girl was princess one year and queen another year. Ribbons and trophies stacked up. Pretty much always had at least 1 horse but never more than 7 at any one time. Years have rolled by, horses are gone but memories are still bright. I enjoy your channel. 1 of the horses we have had was a good as gold old perch by the name of Big Dan. He was broke for wagons, logging and riding. Steady and gentle, grand old boy.
I live Northeast of Duluth, MN..I don;t have any horses, but my grandfather had a team of horses and wagon, which he used on his 80 acre farm. He also used them to help build roads. I have blinders and bit and a wood cross bar or whatever it is called. I live 3 miles from where my Moms father homesteaded and 4 miles from where my fathers dad homesteaded.
I smiled at this video from the time I saw the title until the end of the video. Feelings I experienced ... appreciation, my memories, jealousy, and satisfaction. Thanks for thinking to do this.
I had a Welsh pony when I was a child, and then got an Arabian when I was 16. She wasn't in great shape when we rescued her but I brought her back to decent health. She was never going to be right again, but I did my best.
retired now Dad was a miner & had a stable pit ponies & I worked them when he retired. on our smallholding in the UK. England
Lady is so beautiful! Gentle and smart, too. If reincarnation is such a thing, I sure hope I come back to this world living on a farm with horses, sheep, cows, goats you name it. But in the meantime, I get to have a second life through following yours and your family's. Eternally grateful
To your question about the experience or experience with horses. I am from Friesland/Netherlands. I grew up with Frisian horses (8 pieces). We used the horses for all the farm work. We had a dairy farm with about 40 cows. I have worked a lot with horses. We had them for the farm wagon, carriage, and the like. I also rode it (without a saddle). I have ridden with 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 25 horses in carriage. I also trimmed many horses and beat irons under them. I myself am a man of almost 53 years.
I’ve had probably every breed imaginable. At least in part. I’ve had riders, drivers and workers. I love them all and your family is a joy to watch. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
Ditto
worked horses, wanted to ride since I wss 9 years old...now 71. Love to see you ride Lady in the Winter. So much fun to have a draft in deep snow too!
I actually had a Belgian growing up. Her name was Belle and she was an absolute DREAM!! I hope to one day have another Belgian in my life.
My mom's dad always had a horse or two, right up until his death at age 92. The only ones I knew were Blaze (a roan that he had throughout my childhood) and Nugget (light golden color, he had her for a good 30 years). I don't recall the name of the last one, but she was really just a "drop off" -- he was by then unable to walk, but some relative couldn't see Grandpa without a horse, so she dropped her off and came by every day to feed her and let her out where Grandpa could see her out the window. That poor horse was just finishing out her own days, and when Grandpa had a stroke and had to go to the nursing home, the horse wasn't long to follow.
Enjoyed the video as always 💕🐎
I really enjoy watching your vids..I used to raise and train Arabians..I live up in northern Minnesota.but grew up in Maine.
Thanks for watching, that's cool!
Great job brushing the horse Trudy
Forgot her hooves, actually it looks like her back shoes are falling off.
You girls are wonderful !!! I'm green with envy !!! Lady is beautiful & it was wonderful to see you bareback riding. You said you were curious about our "horse experience ". I grew up around horses, the neighbors had a few, but i didn't care to ride them. So I went to riding stables, which wasn't the best place, but I had many experiences, some hair raising. The best was to ride on a retired "police horse" a mare, she was a dream for a beginner. She responded to leg movements & even leaning in a saddle & turning you head. Nothing has ever compared to her. I always dreamed of owning one like her.
I live in South West Florida, work on an island in the Gulf of Mexico for the super rich. I'm not a sun worshiper, born in Michigan yearn to live north again someday but in northern middle Tennessee. Love your dad's channel & your whole family. I was a tomboy my whole life & drove a dump truck or tractor when necessary.
Actually prefer that over an office job, but I've been my own boss for over 30 years & that's the best job to have. You ladies are impressive in all your skills !!!
Hope your dad is mending well & your mom is awesome!!!
Thanks for sharing
I had draft crosses for 20 years in the 1980s/1990s. The fondest memories I had were in the cold Wisconsin winters when I'd saddle up my grey perch/cross mare. I'd loop a long rope to the saddle horn, attach a saucer to the other end and take my younger siblings for rides in the deep snow. If you'd trot fast enough in a circle the saucer would go airborne and the kids would be flung off the saucer and tumble into the soft, deep snow. They usually emerge laughing hysterically with a faces full of snow.
Lady seemed so pleased to get out for a stroll, she is such a sweetheart. I am from Scotland U.K. As a child we had working horses and I used to ride them out sometimes it was real fun. I enjoyed this video took me back to my happy childhood
I live in Massachusetts and I’ve had horses my whole life. Jumping on bareback with a halter and lead rope was always great fun! I watch your dads video’s all the time! He’s a really good horseman! Lots of respect for him! Most horses don’t tolerate two riders at a time because the one in back are sitting on their kidneys. Short backed horses especially are effected with riding double depending on weight, bouncing etc… some horses just tolerate it. You looked a little nervous out there and that’s ok but consider what that feels like to your horse. Ask your dad to watch this video. Especially your rein length, elbow position and your hands. Straight line from your shoulders to the bit doesn’t allow lady’s head to move without pulling her mouth as she needs her head to balance herself. Lengthen your reins a bit. Sit back a little, keep your elbows relaxed and bent, and your fingers closed to follow the movement with a nice even contact. All horses wether riding or driving move the same way. Some horses will trot or jig when there’s no give or a following the movement with your elbows at the walk or the canter. It’s just good horsemanship to do the best we can for our horses. These are just observations not criticisms! I love that you took her for a ride! Nothing better in life than jumping on my horse!
I was probably about eight years old, when we visited my fathers friend in Mt. Dora Florida. He had a Donkey (Jack), I got on but he wouldn’t go. My father’s friend said walk him down to the road and jump on. When I jumped on holding his mane he ran back to his corrral, while my father and his friend laughing. I was hooked ! Always watching from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸
I do have horses! We have 9 now. A thourghbred, several quarter horses, saddlebred, arabian, clydesdale. We do trail rides, dressage and jumps. I love watching your channel. 👍
My horses are shedding too. Lady seems very sweet and generous, you two are lucky!
Lady is the best darn horse on the farm. Love that you gave her a good ride. You are very good with her.
Never had any horses my 2 year old son found your UA-cam channel and now your videos are playing on the tv ever day and of course I don’t mind it’s much better than cartoons so keep it up
Hello 👋 Karen from Canada 🇨🇦
I live in Prescott, Ontario. I bought a 5 acre horse hobby farm 7 yrs ago for my first horse I bought in 2011 I had kept him at a boarding facility. This is a dream I have had all my life since I was a little girl but received it later in life after being married with two beautiful girls. Now single for the past 16 years I have just turned 60. I was looking after 5 horses when I first moved here, I bought one of the four boarder horses giving me two horses that I own and look after now. No more borders.
I love watching your horses with all the different farming equipment being used. You are so gentle with these horses keeping their safety and care first. I am up to date with Abby's dream home videos and slowly catching up with the ones on this channel. 🤠 Thank you for sharing your life with working horses!
Lady is beautiful. You guys are so lucky to see the horses everyday if you want to
Love this channel.
I love the knowledge and respect you give/show your animals. Modern Humans do not understand or get the connection. I do not own a horse, but can truly appreciate our bonding with them. It is all about trust. You have my heart felt empathy's. As much as I enjoy our modern conveniences, I wish I was back in time. Real world knowledge and a skills.
Above all, absolute respect for all animals. We as modern Humans take too much for granted.
I've always been crazy about horses, rode with some friends as a kid but never owned one. It is Amazing to me to see what horses can do, how well they can be trained and I love watching videos of how to overcome difficult issues with horses. Your draft horses are stunning 😊! So well cared for. Thank you for taking me along with Lady today ❤️!
Hello Julie how are you doing. Wish you a nice weekend.
I live in New Hampshire. My Father owned a pair of draft horses "Babe and Bob and I use to ride on their back and hold on to the collar when he worked the gardens.
had horses growing up but not now. Love watching draft horse's work
I live in Sweden and like watching your videos for relaxing. I have never owned a horse, but would love to. I ride once a week at a riding school and have been doing so for many years. I also ride Icelandic horses when I can
Horses are my life I have gotten into drafts for riding and I absolutely love the channel. I'm from North Bay Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
I had an Arabian mix horse. She was sample Grey with cream mane and tail. I called her lady. She had high spirit and would take you fir a ride when you got on her. Beautiful horse and great memories. I'm from Minnesota originally but have lived in florida since 2006
Great camera job Abby
thanks
As a senior citizen, I grew up watching/loving TV and movie Westerns. I’ve wanted a horse since I was five years old. A younger, dear friend works on a horse farm in Michigan and we love to hear her stories. Another friend took riding lessons as a form of therapy. And people who work and love animals have special skills and insights that the rest of us miss.
Have owned many horses in the past. One was a Percheron Stallion. He was a dream boy. He logged, plowed, pulled wagon. Others were saddle horses, sorrel TWH mare, black cutting mare, large pony, mules at various times. The last mare we owned was a black TWH mare that came with a surprise for us, a sorrel filly foal. She was trained to ride and pull carts. We're too old now to care for horses and miss the companionship they provided. Fond memories, those years with them.
Aw, Lady does have a lovely prance. Wow, your mom was a track star! Actually, it's not surprising. Such a nice video! You both deserve kudos for looking after the farm and doing chores while your parents are away. I hope your dad continues to heal during his well-deserved time off.
thanks Elizabeth
Grew up with horses! We rode/showed in 4- H and Saddle Club. My dad also had several teams of Belgians. He lived horses!
WOW! You make me so proud! 76 years old and two combat tours and and and you make me smile more than I have done.... too long.
Always enjoy seeing you ladies having fun and helping out your parents. Means a lot to leave stock in trusting hands. You all are the best Thank you for sharing your winter ride. Hope your dad continues to improve. Safe and careful traveling home.
Life long Virginia horse lover. Have owned horses since high school and leased after that. Retired now an apartment dweller who enjoys your videos.
I have never had a horse but I have rented them to ride twice. ❤❤❤❤
Hi. Gals, I am in Alaska. Never had a horse, but Percheron drafts are my dream. I enjoy your Dad's videos and am envious of you as daughters of someone who uses draft horses. Count your blessings.
I love your channel! I’ve never own a horse. My father promised me one but it never happened. But I used to walk down to a stable close to my house and volunteered. I would clean stalls and they let me ride once in a while! Maybe one day I’ll get my horse, but until then I can live vicariously through you all❤️🐴❤️
Southen Indiana,I recived my first horse for my 9th birthday, a guilting 17 hand cutting horse, that I named charley. I though it was my fathers love me, but later found out it was to work the cattle, also he farmed me out for three dollars a day plus feeding me and the horse. to the neibors for which I was unaware of the fee he was getting. It has been a good family.story. Your posting bring back my memories of my youth. I am a old man of 80 and my memories are a big part of my life, keep up the good work. My grandfather farmed a 160 acre farm in kansas all with horses, so I have a lot of memories.
Good morning 👋
LOLOLOL when parents are away the kids will play. It is so fun to watch well trained horses and kids.
Home is southern Idaho. I have had saddle horses all my life and used draft horses part of my life. Have a great day
I live in Webster, TX and I have owned horses and have an AA degree in equine science. You guys have a wonderful lifestyle!

I'm so impressed that you appreciate all that the horses can do.It's great to see brenda, Jim and the two of you working the horses but, its great to see you have fun wityh them too.
Bob Mowatt
Ohio. 6th generation dairy farming. Obviously past generations have had horses but not now. Our old barns are still set up for horses. We still have some old equipment. I would love to get some work horses. We have a sawmill too and log hardwood trees.
I'm a 55 yr old lady from Utah and I've had horses my whole life. I've done everything from breaking, training, shoeing ,roping, barrels, endurance, packing and just about anything else. I also have buggies and wagons and the older I get the more I enjoy riding in the wagon. I do a week-long wagon train with a group of people every year as well. Horses have always been a huge part of my and my family's life! It's so fun to watch all of the things that your family does!
I used to ride 2 horse's a 2.2hh Section A Welsh Pony named Paisley & a Egyptian Black Mare named Sapphire. Paisley & rode her for 12yrs & Sapphire I rode for 3yrs :) You both have beautiful Belgian Horses so calm :) SUBSCRIBED!!!

Ken from Cincinnati Ohio, I have always loved draft horses. I have never own a horse but it was always a dream. So I have learned to enjoy yours.
You guys did a good job. You are right Brenda does a great job filming and keeping up with Jim.
We adopted an 18yo Belgian from a kill pen and we watch your channel closely to witness the care a work horse gets, what their pace should be, their signals (how you hold the reins in this video) etc. one thing Max really responded well to is ‘high step high step’ that gets him going very well. We learn a lot from you all ❤️❤️❤️ thank you!!! (Pueblo Colorado)
That's great, enjoy Max! Thanks for watching!
I have a belgian draft horse my self. His name is Calvin. I am new to the horse world and learning alot. Great video we are in Maine.
I've always loved horses but sadly have never owned one. I found your dad's channel through yours. I love seeing his big beauties. Trudy had braces! That's great! Had them myself a million years ago lol. 💖💜💖
PG here So fun watching "Ridng Horses with Jim" Today!
I was raised on a farm and we had horses. Just for pleasure. I really enjoy this channel and seeing such magnificent animals. You girls are beautiful and precious. Jim and Brenda did a great job with you girls and it shows in your attitude, work ethic and demeanor. They must be proud of you two. Thank you for sharing.
I live near Denver, Co, and have never owned a horse. I watch your channel because it is interesting and calm. I gotta add that any youtube viewers in Antarctica watch videos set on tropical islands. Lol
This is Jim Craig from Stanfield , Oregon. I use to own a couple of saddle horses. When I was younger rode every day. Used to even ride her to school and stack her out while in class back in the 60s.
I have had horses, worked with them in KY, MD, and NY. Now, I just admire other people working with horses.😃
The wife and kids rode our horses for along time. Then we road motorcycles all over the country. Now our bones stop us from long rides. We enjoy your videos and have your calendar. Thanks
Well... from Australia...
Grew up in the outback on a 28,000 acre sheep station...
We did all our stock work on horseback, droving between properties for 2 days at a time...
Leaving the sheep in a holding yard overnight... whilst in transit!
3weeks of shearing and 3 weeks of lambmarking each year, and moving all the stock through the process!
Best childhood ever!
But a very different environment than yours...
Seen sleet, but not experienced snow...
Yes, i have owned horses too...
And....The ups and downs of it!
Live at Lake Macquarie NSW now!
My wife Annette had horses since she was nine, and did pony club with her children here in Australia she was president of the club.We Love whatching you with your horses brings back happy memories, for her
Love your show. Used to spend free time on my grand parents farm in Stratford and Chelsea Vt. He farmed with a pair of Belgians and I rode them on occasion. Now I have some timberland in Vt and an LT40. I Spend summers there and with my Mom in Hartford Vt. I winter in Kansas. I sing in the choir and appreciate when you ladies sing in harmony.
Majestic was a good word at that time! I don't think you guys take your family for granted and it shows! Nice video!
Never owned a horse but rode them when I was young.Liked been around around horses . Horses were used for a lot of different jobs, delivering milk house to house, delivering groceries, delivering coal, I lived in a coal mining town , houses were heated with coal . That was a few years ago I’m 87 now. Enjoyed your videos never miss one been following for quiet awhile. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing this bit of history
Bill says, "What about me? I wanted to go, too!" 🤣 Good job, all of you! Mpls. 🙋♀️
Thanks girls - you make your parents proud!
Never owned a Horse but always wanted one. I am a bit to old to take care of one. I love your family channel doing day to day things around the horses..
Thanks for sharing and for watching
I love sister videos! I have two young daughters, and a small herd of Fjord Horses in Virginia. I dream someday my girls will be just as close, and still enjoying being around horses.
Thanks for sharing, hope your dreams become reality!
how blessed you two are to have two girls who help out. I dont have a farm but when we go out my two boys will take care of the house and the cats for us. Hope you and "Brenda are enjoying your time away and heal.
Yes we sure are!
Hello from Finland.🙃I just love Big horses. Lady is a Beauty.
I love all things horse and have since I was two. I now only have three horses...all seniors, but my main riding horse is turning 27 on May 20th who is the daughter of the best, most solid mare ever that I had for almost 40 years. I love your gentle giants and enjoy watching all of you work with them. Your dad did a fine job training them.
Thanks for sharing!!
Howdy ladies just a former dairy & horse farm hand from Maryland. Respectin and enjoyin y'all's life vicariously. Y'all never know how good things are until time passes by.⏳🌎📖🙏🗽
That is true
I have 3 horses and I want a Percheron which is how I came across your channel... thank the Lord. If Lady ever gets tired of logging she'd make a great Dressage horse. That "Passage" was beautiful! 😀
Glad you are enjoying the channel.
I had a horse and loved taking off and ridding for hours.
We had both a Percheron and Belgian on our farm in Minnesota back in the fifties. I was eight years old and my legs stuck out straight to the sides; couldn't wrap them around their big bellies! They were the most gentle horses. I was only bitten by our pinto pony. He was a mean one.
You two are sooooooooo cool ! You have made a most enjoyable video. Thank you. Oh, yes, I had owned a horse in my twenties. I had not clue what I was doing or how sensitive that horse was. I look back and don't think I was a good owner. My horse got good care at the stable where I boarded her. But, as for me.... I now see how I was with the dog and horse I owned at that time. I regret my indifference and self centeredness of my youth. I am learning a kind of gentle compassion from watching your family's relationship to your horses and other critters and also towards each other. Again, thank you
From Florida, now stuck in Misery (missouri)😄
I live❤ and breathe horses, can't live without them. I'm a proud owner. Lord God has blessed me with horses since I was 12.
That is awesome!
Hi from Indiana! You girls are super! I appreciate your forthrightness. Both of you communicate well, like your mom. I think Abby got more exercise than Lady did. Her strides are longer than Abby's so about 3x as much exercise for the girl holding the camera! How did you decide who would walk or ride? Draw straws? Blessings to you both! Forgot to say I've been around Amish a lot and an older gentlemen when I was in college over 40 years ago who had Belgians. He logged with his team and did a few other light farm tasks like hauling manure and pulling a grain drill in the fall. I used his place for a wood lot to sell firewood to help pay my keep. Got stuck one time with my truck and trailer and a heavy load trying to get out of the wood lot. He hooked the team to me and we shot out of there like we were on fire. I had to apply brakes to keep them from outrunning the old man! If I lived in your NY neighborhood and were your age, I would be friends with you and your folks! So many things he does that I enjoy too.
I know more about dairy cows than about horses. I tried homesteading for 5 years but didn't really succeed.. I worked a few times making boiler firewood with horses in a sugarbush but, I was the hand, the owner was driving the horses. Your channel feeds my reverie because, since I'm 71, I won't have horses. I like when you girls and your mother talk about and to the horses as friendly individuals. I like to hear about the wood species in the woodlot. Basicly, I'm a daydreamer ... I live in the heart of Quebec City
Printaboul = Gaëtan Dupont.
It. Nice how Jim 2 Daughter can take over stuff while you’re gone
Lady looks so beautiful trotting in the snow. Well done!
I learnt to ride at 3 years old but didn't own my own horse until I was 15 and that was 50 years ago, I've played polocrosse and drove and trained pacers (trotters) I still have 3 horses although I haven't ridden for a while but mean to get back riding soon (health permitting) I am in the process of renovating an old cart so will bring my old (25) pacer out of retirement and do some driving, I find watching Jim working with horses inspiring. love your videos, great job girls.
We had horses. Love watching you guys with your horses.
Riding Lady is much like sitting on a house top. Lots of love from south west Alabama.
I watch from Beautiful Las Vegas ,Nevada Plus was raised on farm in southeast OHIO by grandparents with teams for working the ground ! I'm now 79 and watching your Dad harnessing up the teams brings back a lot of memories !!
My dream was to have a Belgian Draft Horse and ride and love. But it never came to pass and now I'm to old . But watching you guys with lady is wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks for watching, Kelly
No would love to ride but at 6' 2" 300lbs I am too heavy from what most say. And you two are definitely not losers. Your parents I am sure are proud of you both.
Good job ladies. Those horses are in good hands!
Haven't had contact with horse since being a teenanger in the 50's..my grandfather farmed 125 acres with only horses for approx 75 years where he was born in Alleghany County, Ny. Loved to ride some as did you . My mother road work horses 4 miles to school each day in all weather.
I'm a city boy from Pittsburgh. I have never ridden a horse or been to a farm. Good luck to the family and the horses.
Great job doing chores Trudy and Abby
Well done ladies you have a love and respect for the horses and yourselves
