Going on 3 years sober in April. Drank every night for 40 years while adding weed to the mix. Quit both cold turkey and was the best decision of my life. No more “shame overs” and “monkey mind”. Was hard in the beginning but after 3 weeks it gets easier. No desire at all now to drink. You got this brother!

Nine years alcohol free for me. I was on a slippery slope using it to relieve the stress and anxiety that came with a big high paying job I had. One night on a flight home from Denver I was half lit and had just asked the flight attendant for another double. I got up to use the lavatory and while looking at myself in the mirror in that tiny space I said out loud "I'm done". In that moment the good Lord took away my desire to drink. I walked back to my seat and put my fresh cocktail in the trash. I stepped off that plane and have never had the desire to drink a drop since. I walked away from that fancy job as well and became a simple man again like I was raised. Thank you Lord!
You too can be free like me. Trust the Lord and ask for healing.

Wow thanks a ton for sharing this. Reminds me of when the desire to drink was lifted from me. I was also on an airplane. 5am, heading to see my dying beloved Grandfather, day 7 of sobriety after years of heavy abuse and many failed attempts with my own willpower to stop. Praying to God i asked how can I possibly not drink for a lifetime let alone this weekend of pain with my grieving family where i knew alcohol would be used to cope. God sent me a vision right there that He flipped a coin and i was transported to another reality where I no longer thirsted and craved for fermented liquids. Through the Power of God all things are possible. I hope sharing this can help another.

I tried everything to quit. The only thing that worked for me was asking God to help me because I had no power left to do it myself. After that, I never was able to drink again, and believe me I tried. But every time I drank, my body rejected it, even after just 1 drink. I went from drinking half a liter of vodka with no hangover to my body rejecting 1 shot. Furthermore, my new blood tests revealed a healthy liver. There is no physiological explanation for all of this.

Consuming beer, wine, or liquor is not about getting drunk or tipsy, don't do that. Consuming beer, wine, or liquor is about optimizing sobriety, optimizing health. A bit of swimminess/tipsyness can be ok on prudent occasion,… maybe…., for some people, all in good balance, along with good dietary balance. Beer, wine, liquor are healthy beverages, at different quantities. Moderation/Lite-Moderation is key. If liquor, maybe a teaspoon or two,… not a tablespoon, not a shot. Wine,… maybe a shot or two or three, sipped,….. but not a full glass,…. with rare exception. Beer,…. keep on the light side, in general, some as prudently desired, it's good food-beverage. The alcoholic beverages should be used for a combination of caloric and nutritive qualities or effects in optimization of your body integrity. I determine things by results. I'm age 55, doing physically great. Last night in OB, a 30 something years-of-age lass thought I was only 42.

I just like waking up feeling good. Waking up early and no one is up besides you and your animals. Drinking coffee or tea while petting my dogs or cat in my comfy chair. I’m 46. I went to college and was in the military. I binged drank a lot in my 20s. But I just gradually phased it out as I realized what I wanted to look like and how I wanted to feel everyday. I don’t need alcohol to hangout with friends, beach, company parties etc. but I grew up in a home that was loving, never saw my parents ever drunk, and I wasn’t abused. I have no past trauma or have a life of regret. That made it easy for me to just not drink and live the lifestyle I wanted. I can totally understand why some people drink to numb a pain.

Just over 3 years ago I quit alcohol out of the blue after microdosing mushrooms for a month. I had drank for 25years after starting at 12yo. I got excited about the idea of being sober. It was something completely new. Something I had never experienced. I quit and continued to microdose for another 6 weeks. Here I am 3 years later with no desire to ever drink again. There is no doubt in my mind that I would have ever stopped without god sending me those beautiful mushrooms. Having the monkey off your back is an amazingly freeing feeling. It took about a year to get over the initial phase of recovery and to start growing and learning who I really am. The sugar addiction is a real thing. I’m still battling it but will overcome it this year. Once you get over the initial phase you realize by not drinking you are not missing anything good. You have great content! Thanks for sharing!

I’m sure someone said this already, but I appreciate you diving into the tough conversations, and sharing struggles. I’ve been a fan of the show since the beginning, but even getting little reminders in my feed like this is helpful. To anyone on a similar path- check out Huberman’s podcast on quitting alcohol. It prepared me for what the first 30 days would feel like (cortisol levels, sleep problems, etc).
I have no business giving anyone advice, but replacing alcohol with an extra hard training session worked for me. Normal workouts in the morning, and then after work (when I would usually grab a drink) train extra hard. Helps me sleep, and expedites the body transformation that you’ll inevitably see when you quit.
    Good luck out there

Random, but I'm also into saltwater reef tank aquariums. With reef tanks, there is a concept of carbon dosing to manage nitrates. People literally put small amounts of cheap vodka into their saltwater tank every day to help lower one of the two main nutrient measures that affect tanks (nitrates and phosphates). The carbon dosing eventually builds up a bacteria base that lowers nitrates. Something like that has to be happening in our gut. Different environments, obviously, but it seems logical there's some correlation. Yet I've never found a legit sized pubmed type article or similar studying how alcohol or high sugar affects the gut microbiome.

I quit drinking five years ago this past August and it is easily the best decision I’ve ever made to improve my life.
Life got so much more enjoyable and LESS complicated.
    It’s poison.
No one is better with alcohol.

Anyone else find it weird that the host who just spoke of his sobriety has a giant bar in his studio when the camera pans at 9:19?

Appreciate you both. Laird I've been a fan of for years being a waterman. Shawn ,I've been watching your videos from the start. I'm a functioning alcoholic for 11 years. Tried to kick it a few times and failed. I'm trying again. It's hard I get this weird feeling in the back of my head around noon. I think my body wants needs the liquor. I don't know what to do. I'm trying to reduce my intake daily. I'll have a few tall cans daily and force myself to run 5 miles in the evening. It is definitely not the greatest feeling. But that feeling returns around noon everyday and it's agonizing. Did you or Laird ever have that feeling?
