these woman and there touch of 50 60's era music is so refreshing its hard to measure..this one in its self is a awesome example of the smooth era of rock and roll...The Chantels - Maybe (1958)
I hope they get back together it is rare to hear such an excellent group of female singers. As an American i missed the doo wop era.and this music has a great place in history. I can't find any American female artist today in my country that has as much talent as the barrettes .because they sing alot of different songs that touch so many people at any age.and that is what sets them apart from any other female group. I really hope they get back together soon because that is what this world is missing the love of good music. I listen to every song of theirs on you tube. And they really made a difference in my life hearing their love for music and the soulful sound they bring together in every song they sing.i think when God blesses you with so much talent to share with the whole world. Then that is a destiny that should continue to be pursued. This is something special that only comes around once in a life time and i hope grace kim continues with her gift from heaven and rejoins the group. God bless you always barrettes 🙏🙏
Grace Kim. Wow! One of, if not the most, emotional performance on UA-cam. Sensational! Chokes me up! Brilliant, simple video that captures the essence of the performance as well. Hall of Fame performance- all 3!
Great remake of the original Chantells song. The high pitched vocal was meant to sound like a wailing tearful cry. Yeah, I admit, I'm a weeper and this brought a tear to my eye too. Excellent.
Man.... I've listened to this a dozen times now. She handles the lead vocals perfectly. Flawless performance. Great job on the audio. Will listen again in the near future .
Great "sound" on this particular upload of The Barberettes version of "Maybe". I've listened to it a dozen times so far. The voice of the lead vocalist is angelic.
I would venture to say that this is one of, if not the best performance by Grace Kim while she was with the Barberettes. Brought tears to my eyes! Oh how I wish that Grace, Shinae and SoHee were back together again! Maybe we could talk them into a reunion concert sometime. What do you say, ladies? Please?
Hi, I had the exact same teary reaction as you when I first heard this! It would be brilliant if they would get back together & make more Doo-Wop music. Thanks for commenting!
Grace is probably one of the most underrated vocalusts in the modern age. I just love everything about the girl (woman). What a crying Shame that they're not together as a trio anymore. 🥲
I totally agree - their early recordings were the best I think! (Barbera Ann/ Barberettes was a favourite). They had more fun making the videos & their clothing style (they seemed to change into older women as they progressed) no disrespect intended - I'm 57!
here is my feedback it is out of this world. i love this song by the chantels . as a matter of fact I do a radio show and play it a lot. this is every bit as good at the chantels if not better keep up the good work
Their version of maybe is good.but are you crazy Arlene Smith the lead singer of the chantels is a American icon.1 of the best female lead singer of any group in that era.she is in the rockin roll hall of fame. Maybe was 1 of the best songs of any era. In fact the last tour these ladies did was in 2023.and they sounded awesome considering there ages 70 up to 81.no female group from any era lasted as long as the chantels. 60 years they have toured.
They deserved much more recognition. Too bad one of them left the group. The other two are doing their best and all three could make it alone, but there was something magical about the trio, their harmony, sharing leads, and having fun together.
I totally agree. They were brilliant a few years ago but seemed to have changed their style - I prefer great Doo-Wop (I'm fortunate to be friends with a fantastic Japanese singer - new song coming later this week!)
@@RavienUK hi there must agree, i fell in love with the Barberettes the first time i ever saw their videos. Then amazingly i saw them here in the UK i guess around 7/8/9/10 years ago. You lose all track of time over the last couple of years due to lockdowns. Anyway i just happened to be in a bbc tv studio one day when they were filming the One show' an entertainment & chat program that goes out live in the evenings. I couldn't believe it when backstage i saw the Barberettes. I think they were there to promote their appearance at an Asian music festival that was going on in London. I have never seen a recording of the tv show, but it would be great to know if film of it exists? I have tried searching youtube without any luck. Maybe one of the girls has a copy or filmed it on their phones? It would be great if they could see this and upload it here if they have. By the way as you mentioned both Japanese & Doowoop, have you ever seen the 'Oh! Sharels'. They are an amazing girl trio with a fantastic band. The sax player is to die for! The group are real fun especially in videos of their live appearances. I wish one day they would also come to the uk to perform. But in the meanwhile i go back to my original dream of the Barberettes reforming 💙💙💙
@@RavienUK hi again. I guess you can ignore part of my last message. I just checked out your site & you clearly have heard of the Oh! Sharels 😀👍 you have great taste
This song always makes me cry because of the beautiful lyrics and instrumentals.i wish the barberettes could go back and re do this song but also sing all the back ground vocal parts.thats what makes this song very unique and special. These girls grow up together in a time period that involve alot of racism .they never got paid all the royalties that they deserve along with many other doo wop artist because of color. Arline Smith was the lead singer of the chantels and there are 3 other original ladies from the group left today. Jackie Landry Jackson went up to heaven years ago.i love the barberettes they are a excellent group of ladies. Their voices are amazing i hope that they tour the USA so I can see them.and I hope that they will publish a album of some of the other chantels recordings. Because I would buy it and more importantly the chantels can see how much their music influenced other countries
I've loved this song ever since the first time I heard it by the Chantels. I never thought anyone could capture the strength, emotion, expression and sound of Arlene Smith. Grace Kim manages to do it. I'm never heard any cover of this song done as well as this one. I love the original and this version too.
Beautiful. I’m a bit amazed over the Japanese Renaissance of the American sounds of the 50’s and early 60’s. Btw, I would not have left any one of the Barbettes.
Grace Kim is a great talent and that song highlights it. She still sings Jazz and her music is on UA-cam. The Barberette's music is as good as it gets.
@@1969luap I feel the same way. Johathan Lane says he misses Grace Kim. I hope he is talking about her and the Barbarettes no longer performing as a group and not...the other possible interpretation of his sentiment. Anyway, this is truly an emotionally powerful performance. More so even than the original.
The singing was lovely. I think that the overdubbing (which as a whole is excellent) was a little bit too heavy handed in parts as there were times it overpowered the delicate harmonies.
Hi, sorry I don't know. I've just uploaded another overdub of theirs but I'm awaiting (c) clearance (it's currently blocked worldwide!). Update: the tv station refused permission so I've deleted it. I'm no longer working on any of their songs.
Hi. It has indeed. Grace Kim left the group circa 2015 and replaced by Sunnie Lee Kyeong Soen. Then Park So-Hee left in 2018. The remaining Barberettes Shinae An and Sunnie continued performing as a duet until 2020. They pretty much became inactive and disbanded when the pandemic hit. Shinae, Grace Kim and Sunnie went in solo musical directions and each have their own UA-cam channels.
Its 2024 and I'm still listening every day. 🌹🌹🌹❤
