After I made this video about Jerobeam Fenderson's work ua-cam.com/video/ZaTuFB5QXHo/v-deo.html it got featured on a few gadget blogs and this drove a lot of traffic to his site and introduced quite a few people to his wonderful work - so as a favour he made this animation for me (and sent me the WAV file). He's a really great bloke.
Definitely worth a try playing the CD side with the record-player stylus, & hopefully the laser will melt the vinyl side when played upside down in CD-player!
Htf does this piece of gold comment only have 317 after 4 years?? Underrated af! I'm gonna be laughing at this for days! You sir, are an observational comedic genius!
I presume the current sound is the audio that produces the TECHMOAN logo on the oscilloscope? If so I can understand why Mat would want to keep it. What I would try is keep that sound and then immediately afterwards mix in the old one. A micro-mix of Techmoan awesome.
You know what would be cool? Vinyl-Laser Disc. One side could be the Laser Disc for a movie and the other side could be the Soundtrack to the movie! Sounds like a neat idea on paper but not sure if it would have worked.
Unfortunately, Laserdisc maximum per side was 60 mins in the Long Play (CLV) mode. But it would have been really cool in the 80's to have that capability.
There was a strange concept of BROLD about 10 years ago. Blu-Ray On LaserDisc: It would've used a 30cm disc with a 405nm laser. I have no idea how far along it got but no doubt it would've been cool (and expensive).
mclaine33 Yeah, it wouldn't work firstly due to different rpm requirements of analog and digital sides. But otherwise, I do like the idea of such hybrid :)
I work for Sony, and we're about to release a new format for movies called Mini BetaDisk Memory Stick 2. We had to do something all the old format parts we had lying around.
Waste not want not! :-) Might want to include all those unsold PSVita memory cards as well. Better reused than just thrown away because no-one's buying at that high a price point! :-o
Love the new intro (oscilloscopes will forever be rad). Also the french electronic duo "Justice" teased the release of their latest album "Woman" on this same type of format (as a prototype), but the grooves on the vinyl side go way more in towards the center of the CD
Justice released their album "Woman" like this in 2016 for a limited time. The full album was on the CD side and a radio edit of fire was on the vinyl side.
That's a fun idea but very limited. The Vinyl-disc reminded me of the "DualDisc" format that came out in the USA around the same time. Those had DVD (usually surround sound audio and some videos) on one side with the CD audio on the other. They were basically two discs glued together, so they were too big for some car's slot load players.
techmoan I love your videos and all the crazy old formats of music that have pretty much died out. also love the oscilloscope intro gahd dayumm. keep up the good work and thank you for making videos.
I hope you don't take this the wrong way but your videos have helped me out a lot. I have insomnia and your videos are very relaxing to me and watching your videos before I go to sleep really helps me fall asleep. Thanks Techmoan, I really appreciate your videos.
Just did a google video search for VinylDiscs as didn't know they existed - As soon as I saw there was a video link I knew it would be you, You never let us down 🙂 thanks as always
I'm digging the new intro. I like the idea of Vinyl/Disc, as you said this was in 2007 before the resurgence of Vinyl but I think it could work with some more tweaking.
I mean that there are two laser/vinyl disc's and disc one has half of the soundtrack and half of the movie I know most movies will not fit to 2 hours but I think they could left out couple scenes still I don't think laserdisc nerds would complain and disc two has the other half of soundtrack and movie.
Looks like the band released a concept album that was "loosely based on Evangelion". Interesting that my favorite show of all time technically plays a big role in the debut of a "new" media format.
"CD sales are falling, Vinyl sales are rising, but not for a mass market." That was ten years ago, and still describes our current situation. I find it very interesting that the niche collectible market is having such a vinyl resurgence and that it apparently has been going on since Vinyl allegedly died.
Those "vinyl" CD-Rs at the beginning of the video are great for old slot-loading car CD players and such that happen to have worn-out rollers and won't reliably grip a regular CD, causing load/eject issues. The raised "groove" provides enough texture to get the rollers to grip.
OMG! Another of these so-called marketing Ideas that didn't fly. Even if they did mass produce this who would replace their collection with this all over again? Wow! But thanks Techmoan for keeping us in the loop with this stuff. I love your job and wish I had the time to play with stuff like this.
I bought a spindle of those vinyl CD-Rs about 10 years ago. I loved them, but I did use them only for music. I avoided making any data CDs with them. ...although storing MP3s would work for me. Even today, I still buy CD-Rs. I have an older car without a line input. It's only recently that I figured out how to make those cassette adapters work in my car. (My 2002 Camry hates those adapters and normally just ejects them.) Multiple web sites have instructions that show you how to remove the unnecessary gears and rollers inside. However, with my 14 year old CD player showing its age and not having the budget to replace it yet, I'm tempted to get a cassette deck and recording some cassettes again for my car. I do have old cassettes, but since some are not easily replaced, I'd like to archive them to MP3s before I start actively playing these tapes again. My finances are recovering from a low period so budget has been holding me back.
***** Thanks but I already have like 200 tapes. Most of them are from the 80s and 90s - some prerecorded, some made to play favorite songs in my car, and some are copies of LPs before alot of wear and tear. I'm just looking into inexpensive equipment to play them on to create MP3s so I have a digital backup. Depending on cost, a deck to record new tapes might be nice but at the moment budget is a factor.
I don't know how much you know, but assuming you have at least a tape player, personally, I would do the archiving with Tape Out connected to my computer Line In, and use Audacity (Freeware) to record them to mp3 format. You can't avoid the 90 minutes to play a C-90 into the computer though!
***** My last tape player died - except for the one in my car. I do know ALOT. Not an expert but I was recording audio cassettes back in the early 80s. I just don't have the equipment anymore so I have to look for something. However, with current financial situations, bills first. It might be a few months before I can get a new player.
I just replaced my 80's tape player with a nearly identical one bought from a local guy who refurbishes used ones. I asked for, and got a discount for giving him my old one to fix in turn. I have been playing cassettes I hadn't heard for years. Most sound pretty good. It was at a reasonable cost, you might try that route.
***** Thanks. I'm very aware of that. I don't need suggestions. I just finished a long period of unemployment and under employment. I need debts paid first. Tapes are not an immediate priority.
The BBC reissued a number of their 1970s albums on a look-alike "vinyl" CD with original style label. All CD of course, like the CD-Rs at the beginning.
Neat intro! You need to do a video explaining how that was made!
Jero is a wizard, a true wizard, haha.
Nice indeed.
agreed David i like it looks like the start of Mario kart 64
:-)
"This isn't really my favorite genre of music."
Music played "Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
Perfect.
A DR. Dre tape could contrast that part excellently
I liked it, haha
Can't wait to scratch up both sides!
LOL!!
Definitely worth a try playing the CD side with the record-player stylus, & hopefully the laser will melt the vinyl side when played upside down in CD-player!
Rolf Harris; Wasn't the technology but the content that's rubbish!
Htf does this piece of gold comment only have 317 after 4 years?? Underrated af! I'm gonna be laughing at this for days! You sir, are an observational comedic genius!
@@MrWombatty it wouldn't melt it as players try to play as CD first now and that's inferred
Love that new intro. This format of music was very unique, btw.
New intro visuals are great but I already miss The Techmoan Intro Sound. Because it's unavoidably awesome.
Agreed. A combo of Osilloscope Techmoan and the trademark Techmoan noise would be awesome.
I also like it. I've been wondering if TechMoan would do anything with it since I say it at the very end of the window cleaning video.
I agree that combination would be great.
I presume the current sound is the audio that produces the TECHMOAN logo on the oscilloscope? If so I can understand why Mat would want to keep it. What I would try is keep that sound and then immediately afterwards mix in the old one. A micro-mix of Techmoan awesome.

mclaine33 oh, and I missed the keyword Laser disc! I got no rpm in my head for it. Anyway...
mclaine33 it could've. I'm thinking it could've been done with the album on the vinyl but maybe some music videos on the other
The oscilloscope intro is incredible! Well done!
Whoa great intro, I loved that oscilloscope video. I'm glad you took something from it
The song at 3:14 is called "Nerv/Seele", for those wondering.
"...Somebody had this idea 10 years ago..."
Wow, already in the 90s?
"...So in 2007..."
Oh.
Would never have expected to see Evangelion in a Techmoan video of all places.
Love the intro! Techmoan, one of the most well produced channels on UA-cam!
Deathcar/Fightstar must be big Neon Genesis Evangelion fans...
The band is called Fightstar. Deathcar is the name of the single lol.
I was never expecting anything referencing Evangelion in a Techmoan video.
I work for Sony, and we're about to release a new format for movies called Mini BetaDisk Memory Stick 2. We had to do something all the old format parts we had lying around.

Probably the best music I've heard on this channel \m/

I remember seeing a dual disc dvd? I think the name of the movie was Napoleon dynamite.
Dude, sick intro!

My god. You are really spitting out videos now... and I love it!
Great new "intro machine" by the way!
I dont know what I would do without watching this channel, keep it up buddy cant wait too see what you show us next
Really cool to see Fightstar on a channel this big. Anyone who likes metal / post hardcore stuff, they're really good and fantastic live
that intro is so cool!
It's absolutely brilliant!
Awesome intro! I bet a lot of math went into that! Great video, as always, thanks for sharing!
Digging the new intro, it's so cool!
Just did a google video search for VinylDiscs as didn't know they existed - As soon as I saw there was a video link I knew it would be you, You never let us down 🙂 thanks as always
Love the new intro! And, thanks for sharing the "vinyldisc". First I'd heard of it!

"Zankoku na tenshi no you ni
Shounen yo, shinwa ni nare!"
0:55 Hey that looks like the Lance of Longinus. _Sees name of 3rd track._ My god, there really is a track from Evangelion on this disc!
thnkas
I'd buy this.
Definitely not the type of music you showed here but the idea of having combined media like this.
Thanks for introducing me to a awesome band that I never knew existed.
Half CD, Half Vinyl. Just imagine a mix between laser-disc & Vinyl...
Think if they would do movie soundtrack on vinyl side and put the movie on laserdisc side that would be awesome
I mean that there are two laser/vinyl disc's and disc one has half of the soundtrack and half of the movie I know most movies will not fit to 2 hours but I think they could left out couple scenes still I don't think laserdisc nerds would complain and disc two has the other half of soundtrack and movie.
that's been done before, the record sounds fine but the video/audio quality of the laserdisc is tarnished.
That new intro's on fire yo!!
"NERV" and the Lance of Longinus... I can only wonder what that's referencing... Hmm 🤔
Also: Shinji Ikari, which apparently is the track featured on the vinyl side.
I bought some of those Record CD-R's, awesome to see that they tried to make working ones, not just for show.
With the resurgence of vinyl I could totally see these selling today.

Zankoku na Techmoan no THESIS
I now want to see a Techmoan Anime OP parody.
i have one of these Vinyl CDs, i didn't know it was a functional vinyl track
I love your Q and A in the Description Box so much
The song on the vinyl side is literally called Shinji Ikari oh my god wow
That new intro is bloody amazing.
no
sorry wrong comment
I'm really loving the new intro really clever and retro using the oscilloscope
wow.I really like the new intro. Typically in your style i saw it at the end of the last video and hoped you will use it. Once again its superb!
Neat little thing...count on you to present something I have never seen before. Cheers.
BTW - I really like your end theme....soothing.
I had no idea such a thing existed - thanks much for posting about it!
That's one neat intro, I really was not expecting that. That was a nice surprise.
3:20 I love the absolutely stark contrast between the music and the cursive font of the player
Nice new intro there, Mr Moan. And great video as usual!
Interesting video as always, love the new intro graphics...
waaaay better introoo maaannnn
AWESOME I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!
Excellent research, presentation and editing.
It's come back to the beginning!
Silver Disc Fail!
why is there a evangelion track on the fightstar album
get in the fucking album shinji
Looks like the band released a concept album that was "loosely based on Evangelion". Interesting that my favorite show of all time technically plays a big role in the debut of a "new" media format.
because evangelion is good
Blue Dragon :No it’s not
Blue Dragon -Well the story of the show isn’t hold up against the passing time.
Love those blank vinyl cd's, can't believe you showed them off!
Love the new intro, putting that oscilloscope to good use!
Love that oscilloscope intro!
Just wanted to say I'm digging the new intro, very cool!
Those sounded like two VERY different genres of music between the two sides, judging from the brief snippets you included...
New Intro is awesome!! I hope to get or make my own oscilloscope
_Trying to play the vinyl part_
*Shinji! Get in the freaking... stylus?*
LOVE the new intro. I probably watched it like three times.
Well that was different! Never knew anything about this until i watched your video, thanks for sharing!
I never saw them before, great vid

Please don't act like screamo isn't a genre. (Even if the song in the video wasn't screamo)

your style of speaking its so relaxing
New intro is ace, nicejob @techmoan
I still love these, never had the chance to play one, but it's still a lovely gimmick that I wish would still pop up once in a while.
Great intro, and just like always, great video!
I loved those verbatim cds I wish I would've stock up on those
YES! That Fightstar CD is in my collection, but my record player won't go to the very small diameter it needs to read the vinyl side...
Fightstar is a really underrated band and Deathcar is a great track
OK, love the new intro, damn that's awesome.
The new intro is really cool mate. Someone, somewhere, must've contemplated doing this with LaserDiscs back in the day.
just LOVE the new intro!
My high school's class sent around CDRs of photos on those "Vinyl" discs... man 2003 seems so long ago!
3:16 Well that's the kind of music I like. lol Never actually heard of these guys before. They sound awesome!

Best. Intro. Ever! Sounds amazing on headphones
Still waiting for the vinyl tape, hope he'll do a video on that soon! Maybe some time in April?
I would very much Love this as a collectors item. in practice not so much. New intro is wonderful.
Loving the new intro. The CDR's can also be purchased from Tesco. I bought the same pack a couple of years back.

very fine new intro, also, great find!

What's with all the evangelion references on the disc packaging? Saw mention of nerv, seele, shinji ikari, and a picture of the lance.
I actually just bought some of those CD-r's with the vinyl back on them a few weeks ago!
