No matter the season, weather or temperature, my dear sausage is still achieving his dream of being a disposal unit 24/7. A bug or a shadow or even a rock. He will try to eat it. At least my girl is calm.
They TOTALLY follow a pattern. Brumation, ovulation. Right now my geckos are starting to slow down, brumation usually starts in December for me. When females ovulate they’re WILD. Always trying to escape. And not eating. Summer is my favorite because there’s no brumation, there’s no ovulation. It’s the best time of year 😂
Yes haha when they're just happy and eating its so much better. I imagine brumation and ovulation months vary a little depending on where people are in the world. :)
HEYY! My Juvenile leopard gecko (that’s I got yesterday) has been sleeping for over 13 ish hours, and its almost 9pm and I put his worms and fresh water in this terrarium, but he just went back to sleep, is there something I should do?
I just got my adult gecko a month ago and was freaking out because he wasn't eating hardly anything but he wasn't losing weight or anything. Your video really helped put my mind at ease and know what I should look out for
I'm so glad I watched this when I did. My geckos weren't eating as much as usual and I was growing concerned, but now I know it's just a part of the cycle. I will keep an eye on them for a little bit just in case.
My leo literally won't stop eating. She's always hungry!! I notice though on my arboreal species that they are refusing food. Most likely because they are at a room temp and it's been decreasing with the coming of winter.
Haha lucky :) to be fair my leos are still pretty into their food atm. I haven't noticed it so much with my arboreal geckos but I am using heating with them so that might be why haha :)
WHY HAS NO ONE EVER TOLD ME ABOUT THIS 😭😭 THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!!!!!!! I’ve had my girl for 8 years now and I’ve really noticed how she hasn’t eaten much once spring started this year as well as her digging. I learn something new every year with her I swear. Haha thank you so much for this!
I just barely discovered your channel and this makes me so happy! After much deliberation, my wife and I finally decided on what our first reptile will be, and we want a leopard gecko. I feel like your channel will help us greatly, thank you for having this kind of dedication. :)
Said it before and I'll say it again, the time and effort and research that goes in to your videos is phenomenal, and they never fail to amaze! You're vastly underrated. I always come back to videos like this - thank you!! 😁
Thank the Gecko Gods for you!!!! You have really helped me with my 18 month old female Gecko "Gherkin". We've had her since she was 3 months so this autumn is her first adult year. My son and I keep track of her habits, so I was really worried in October when she went off her food and was hiding. I asked the reptile vet if she could be brumating, and he ended up insisting she might be egg bound, and i forked out for an ultrasound. I'm glad he confirmed she wasn't, but he still wouldn't consider the brumation!!! You have cleared this all up for me, and I will maybe panic less that she's not eating or pooping! I celebrate every poop and eaten insect! 😂😂 is consider her to be over weight at 100g and she's not lost any so far. Your videos are so, so helpful. She has a Deep Heat projector and T5 uv on your recommendation! You are awesome!! Happy New Year, Thank you! Leanne and Jacob, Isle of Man xxx
I want to thank you so much for this information. My leopard gecko had stopped eating and I was stressing really bad. I love your channel and I so appreciate all of the information you have out here for people like me. I rescued my precious baby from a family member last year and it is amazing how strong she was and her ability to get to a healthy state and so when she stopped eating you can understand why I started freaking out. again, thank you very much for all of the information you have shared because it has helped me to understand my baby more.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for a very informative video. Not having complete a full yearly cycle with my Geckos yet this was very interesting and reassuring. My Geckos have happier and healthier lives because of the excellent information you provide :-)
Oh this helped so much, my leo stopped eating in June and started eating normally back in September. I thought something was seriously wrong, this was a relief.
I was told by a friend that when her gecko stops eating in a normal way, she does the wanna eat thing but she takes some veggies and uses a paper hole puncher to put a few bits of snacks
When i got my leopard gecko he was all yellow with one single strip on his back and ass he grew up he got spots on his face and tail and the strip on his back faded away now he still growing but it was so fun to watch him grow i got a new one im waiting on her to grow to
thanks so much for this! ive had my baby (first reptile!) since the end of spring and your videos have taught me a lot about what to expect for this coming winter. thanks again, love your channel and your leos!!!
thank u so much for this video! i've only had my adult female leopard gecko for 2 months (tomorrow will be the 2 month anniversary of me getting her) and i've been super stressed since she hasnt been eating much lately. i'm glad this is normal! she hasn't lost any weight either, shes a chunky girl at about 65 grams.
I can tell you really love your geckos! I have a leopard gecko named gizmo and I have at him for five months. I waited five months before I got him. I was looking for a channel to tell me about geckos. And I found yours and I know pretty much everything. I am about to update gizmo to a 20 gallon tank and I am using eco earth right now. But I am wondering were do you get that Arcadia pro because I want to use that for gizmo. I do pay for gizmos food and I payed for his tank and hides and heat mats. My parent pay for half of the food. What kind of calcium powder do you use?? If you read this thank you 🙏 and please tell me anything that might help gizmo.
Thanks :) Ah nice, well if you're in the UK the arcadia stuff is quite easy to find online. If you're in america, try lightyourreptiles.com I use the shadedweller UV kit, with earthpro-a and earthpro-ca-pro-mg :)
Thank you for educating the public on these small topics that still impact the life of a gecko. Woulda never thought geckos were capable laying even if infertile, beardies do too
Thanks for the reassurance. Previous owner told me my female leopard didn't brumate but there's definitely been a lack of appetite going into this season; had me worried. Much more sensible breakdown than the flowchart. I had no idea they were so moody...
This video has taught me two things, 1) you really should try your hand at being a weather forecaster on the news you 2) that Leo's really do follow a trend (it was just a gut feeling before hand) That was awesome though so informative and it really could ease the mind and guide the first time keeper also could you please do one like this for crestys as I'm about to get one and any resource like this would be amazing....loved it
This helped so much!! I had no idea they did this, and during my research no articles or people told me that they may do this, and this is my first winter season that I have my leopard gecko and I started getting worried, and even when I started wondering if they did things like this I couldn't find anything! This video really saved me some money and made me sigh with relief, thank you❤❤❤
Aw no problem :) yeah tbh i couldnt never find anything on this, but I'd notice the same thing every year, and then i started my channel and people would experience similar things, so thought i'd make this video :)
Thanks for making this great video! I love the chart you made! It was very easy to follow and understand. I will definitely use this as a resource for questions I get on this topic.
This is intresting. I have 2 males and 4 females in seperate tanks, but close too eacother. I got them this year, but they have all been eating well so far (jan-, jun). I know they also ate well last year when they were even housed together (in a zoo).
Thank you!! This is my female leopard geckos first spring as an adult and she is usually a very good eater and for the past couple days she has been refusing food so i was very worried, hopefully all this is just because shes ovulating
Ive never been into reptiles but a while ago when i found out about leopard geckos, i fell in love with them and did a lot of research 24/7😂 i might be getting one soon.
This is my second winter with my leopard gecko. While my gecko is a male, I find that he follows a similar schedule/pattern. Both this year and last, he went off food around October and definitely November. He might eat one superworm a week! But by March, he has an appetite again. Good information to know. (:
You guys are soooo helpful I’m so thankful that you are here to help me! There amazing pets and if you weren’t here I think having a gecko would be a lot hard
I just got a leopard gecko from a local reptile show and was told he was 5 months old. He only weighs 10 grams though. I don’t have much experience with leopard geckos (I’ve kept many other reptiles though) so I’m not sure if this is a normal weight for his age. His tail is fairly skinny and his body is very lean (not in a sick looking way at all) he has an insane appetite. He could eat all day long, I’ll feed him 15 small mealworms and he will still eat more. I’ve been giving him a mix of mealworms and crickets (as many as he can eat in 10 minutes) everyday since he’s small and 1-2 waxworms twice a week. He seems very healthy, he weighed only 8g when I got him 2 weeks ago and then he was 10g when I weighed him last week. He is so active and is the most gentle, slow and sweet little guy in the world! I’m worried I’m not feeding him correctly and if I should feed him every other day because of his age. I’m also wondering if he is at a normal weight for his age?
ah maybe that's what you find. I think it probably varies a little bit depending on your location. I know breeding season can start around that time, so maybe they do start ovulating but the lack of appetite doesn't quite start then?
I am always glad when I see your videos. It makes me happy to know I'm not crazy!! I just bought a second leopard gecko, but as the first is my partners, this is the first Christmas I'll actually live with them, so when my new one and my partners started to eat less, esspecially as I knew the first is literally insane about mealworms, I was worried they were smelling each other or I'd accidently allowed an illness into the cages when I went to the expo for no. 2. Thank goodness for your channel!!
Ah yeah last night Gizmo turned her nose up at wax worms! I was like 'oh girl you know winter is coming' haha. Oh no, you didn't put the second one straight in with the original one did you?
@@leopardgeckotalk Oh no, don't worry, they are in separate vivs, and I made sure to wash my hands between having anything to do with either of them, but I only did it for two weeks and that was when they both started rejecting as much food, but I only got no.2 three weeks ago, so bromination must have kicked in at the same time for them rather than illness. I live uphill Lincoln UK (have you been here?) and it goes from normal to super cold in two days, so I guess they were just in tune. I might get some waxworms and see if I can get any last fat in them for over winter! There may yet be hope!! No. 2 will be fine, she's a chonky girl, but no.1 is extra small, but I don't underfeed her!! She's about 52g most of the time, and a good 1.5cm smaller than no.2. She isn't stunted, just teeny, I swear. But I'm sure she might find room for one little waxworm ;) Thank you for replying :)
my female has slowed down but my other two haven't slowed down on eating at all I have a male and one that is only a few months old and they never slowed down at all eating like a champ
I acquired a 2-year-old female leopard gecko in July (she is a retired breeder), and adopted another six-month old female just a few weeks ago. The older female has definitely slowed down recently. She's in great physical condition (if anything, she's a little bit overweight) but doesn't want to come out of her moist hide. I'm glad to know this is normal. The younger female does not seem affected at all by the changing seasons. She has tons of energy, and oddly enough, is awake off and on during daylight hours. She's ravenous and seems to grow more every day. Do juveniles just skip the brumation period?
I too have observed a similar cycle and surprisingly my geckos have ate more food this November than last November.(Even though I live in the south east United States)
I just got my first two leopard geckos last month and this is very helpful. My baby eats anything and everything but my adult is already starting to slow down (it's very cold already). It only worried me because he wasn't eating for a while since he was still adjusting. He still eats, just very little.
Hi! i live in Sweden, where it can get pretty cold during the winter. What should I do to keep the ambient side of my gecko's tank from getting too cold?
Fiona Shepley she doesn’t. When I first got my gecko she was a rescue, so she HATED being touched. I had to ease her into it and she’d flip out whenever I touched her. Now she scratches the glass cause she wants to come out.
I am probably overly paranoid because this is my first year with a leopard gecko, but I think my little guy is beginning partial brumation and I have a few questions. He was just impacted last week from a tough mealworm, but I gave him a bath and belly rubs and he passed it no problem. Immediately afterwards he started to slow down a bit and show all of the signs of brumation. He is not refusing food, but won't expend the energy to hunt anymore (which he is usually very excited about) and will only eat 1 or 2 appropriately sized insects if I put them right in front of his face. Even though he has not been eating much, he has at least 1-3 every other day roughly. What concerns me is that he still has not pooped since he pooped out the impacted material. He is not bloated anymore or showing signs of still being impacted, but since he is eating at least a little I am wondering if he should have pooped by now? It's been a week. Thank you for any insight to this new gecko mama!
Very informative vid! This came in just in time for me and my gecko. I have had her for about 7 months and she's about 9 months now. I always wondered if the behaviors would change if you reside in a hot country that has no winters.
HEYY! My Juvenile leopard gecko (that’s I got yesterday) has been sleeping for over 13 ish hours, and its almost 9pm and I put his worms and fresh water in this terrarium, but he just went back to sleep, is there something I should do?
oooh yeah i didnt think of that, i wonder how it affects them being in the southern hemisphere when the seasons are round the other way? so do you still find that they ovulate in your spring, and brumate in your winter?
Haha I've only had my leos gor two months going for three but when i got my eldest she ovulated quite late i was quite stressed but we will see what happens in winter next year😂😂
My gecko is still a baby but I notice that October is when he stop eating as much. He would eat maybe 2 mealworms and be done. He is eating normally for the most part now. But At least once a week he won't eat one day but the rest of the week he will. He ate the best in the summer time! I'm going to get a scale and keep up with his weight.
ah right, yeah its handy to keep an eye on their weight. I can't remember how my geckos acted when they were babies in terms of brumation as they were all very young and still growing but yeah :)
Love your channel! With all the recent natural disasters, I was wondering if you have any advice for leopard gecko parents for mandatory evacuations and/or other emergencies. There isn't much info about reptile-specific emergency preparedness online. It would make a great video!
I’m getting my Leopard gecko in November, is it possible they may refuse to eat well after Brumation because of being uncomfortable with their new environment?
Hey, I am not sure if you'll see my message, but I am a big fan! I have a small question. I just received a new juvenile 2 days ago. The habitat is fine, lots of hides, and the temps are fine. Checked with temp gun, thermometer and controlled by thermostat. My question is why would the gecko stay 99% of its time in the warm hides. Temp on the hot side varies between 30 to 32, cold side between 24 to 26. Are my temps off or is it just stress? Keep up the good work!
Thank you leopard Gecko my Leopard Gecko is very healthy her name is Calci She is an albino Leopard Gecko I'm now very happy she was in a bad spot living in a pet store with only one hide and treated like a desert lizard Thank you.
So my female leopard gecko will start to do this because its march? On the 28th of feb she didnt eat at all then notice she was turning white and my research said she will shed and she just finished shedding this morning and it also said she wont eat a few days later from shedding should I try to feed her 1 or 2 crickets a day to see if she will eat? And thanks your videos help me alot and in case your wondering she had a great shed no left over skin :)
Sorry this isn’t related to the video but how old do you think a crested gecko should have a waxworm? And how old should they have a cricket? (in your opinion) and How many should they have per month?
Hi my female leopard gecko Luna stopped eating at the beginning of February she's not eating since we keep offering meal worm, wax worms & crickets but she wants nothing she has shed twice over this period which she ate. Her weight has gone from 84g (quite chunky since she was spayed) to 78g. She's doing small wee's & the odd poo. She's still active roaming around her Viv every night & she comes out & runs around the room like she's always done. Should we be panicking and getting her to the vets now?
My female goes off food like crazy it drives me nuts I always panic but then I take her to a vet and nothing is wrong. At one point I was terrified I'd check on her in the morning and find her dead she was so skinny, I started force feeding her herptivite and reptiboost that I mixed into a formula and I fed her every day to every other day for 2 months until she finally started hunting the crickets I offered. We lived in California at the time where winters are warm it was so bizarre but she didn't have a parasite or anything the vet didn't know what was wrong. Every winter I get so worried she's going to do it again. This video is so great I didn't realize that the reason she goes off her food during late spring early summer is due to ovulation, I just panic and think she's sick. Her weight fluctuations are definitely the only downside to having my Arwen but boy do they make me worry.
Does shedding change during different months ? My leopard gecko has had some trouble shedding these past couple sheds ? Its been around the fifties to thirty’s
poor shedding can be down to dehydration, low humidity, and sometimes lacking in some vitamins and minerals. I do find once they have one bad shed, the next one or two may be a little bad. But I'd check you have a humid/shedding hide.
Make sure the tank humidity stays at 40-55%, measured by a digital hygrometer. Your gecko is having trouble because it’s drier in the winter. If they don’t use the humid hide mist the tank when they’re in shed
I got my first leopard gecko 2 weeks ago and watching this made me realize that he's probably going into brumation cuz he is slowing down it seems, at least I hope everything is going alright XD
hey! i got my vivarium and other items required for my first gecko in the post today. i’m worried because the heat mat covers half of the vivarium, rather than a third. i’m not at ease to get a new one anytime soon but am supposed to be collecting my leopard gecko from a breeder next weekend. is the 50% covering heat matt still suitable? please help :)
I have a quick question... What gecko powder for there food do you use.. I don't have a leopard gecko but i really want one so i'm just trying to know more 'bout them. i just really wanna know what powder do you use for there food. Thank you for making this awesome channel!!
Animal Love! You need a calcium supplement and multivitamin supplement. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings. Or use Repashy Calcium Plus or reptivite with d3, they’re all in ones
A gecko calendar would be a great "merch" idea, it would help keepers keep track of the gecko yearly cycle
Omg Y.E.SSSSSSSS
That’s actually something I could get behind
agreed @Leopard Gecko
yes plz!
I love this idea

hahaa sausage :')
Lol my geckos name is nugget but I don’t know the gender just yet and he does the same even though he is the fattest gecko I’ve seen
lol I love the name
One of my Leo’s name is Mango
I have a beardie and his name is Joe
I'm super late but my urban gecko is called apollo even though she's a girl because she looks like a pineapple and "pollo" in cantonese is pineapple

Yay, thank you for this! It was very helpful and informative!
Ovulation starts in February 90% of the time it's rare to see it happen in March but it does happen.
ah maybe that's what you find.
Jessicat are they housed together?
@@fionashepley478 Nope, separate enclosures and the new girl is being quarantined. (I plan to keep them separate even when quarantine is done.)
I too have observed a similar cycle and surprisingly my geckos have ate more food this November than last November.(Even though I live in the south east United States)
Ahh very interesting :)
I just got my first two leopard geckos last month and this is very helpful. My baby eats anything and everything but my adult is already starting to slow down (it's very cold already). It only worried me because he wasn't eating for a while since he was still adjusting. He still eats, just very little.
Aww, yeah pretty typical for the adult one, hopefully the baby keeps eating :)
Are they housed together?
I was born Dec. 4th 2006 :D gizmo is older then me lol
Btw love ur channel.i got a Gecko and learned most of my info from u!
my winter are warmer then summer 75% of the time
Hi! i live in Sweden, where it can get pretty cold during the winter. What should I do to keep the ambient side of my gecko's tank from getting too cold?
Can you do this for crested geckos too please?!
Yeeeees
When you try to tame a new gecko. Death rolls. Lots of death rolls.
That’s not normal, they must have enigma syndrome.
Fiona Shepley she doesn’t. When I first got my gecko she was a rescue, so she HATED being touched. I had to ease her into it and she’d flip out whenever I touched her. Now she scratches the glass cause she wants to come out.
My leos have never ever refused food, not even in the “Brumation months”
Love your videos!!!
thank you :)
Very informative vid! This came in just in time for me and my gecko. I have had her for about 7 months and she's about 9 months now. I always wondered if the behaviors would change if you reside in a hot country that has no winters.
I love your leopard geckos so much!! They are adorable:D
aww thank you :D
Leopard Gecko omg thank you so much for replying to my comment! You made my day!!! :DDD
HEYY! My Juvenile leopard gecko (that’s I got yesterday) has been sleeping for over 13 ish hours, and its almost 9pm and I put his worms and fresh water in this terrarium, but he just went back to sleep, is there something I should do?
My leo went 5 days without food as we transitioned from spring to summer here in South Africa and she finally gained here appetite back 😅
oooh yeah i didnt think of that, i wonder how it affects them being in the southern hemisphere when the seasons are round the other way? so do you still find that they ovulate in your spring, and brumate in your winter?
I would feed more than just mealworms, they aren’t a good staple diet. Vary their diet. Crickets and Dubia Roaches are good for a staple :)
@@fionashepley478 I feed him crickets too. I switch off ever other week. But he likes the mealworms better. But thanks for the advice!
I live in Northern Ireland and it gets really cold here in October maybe that’s why ?
@@lisamckinley430 I live in Washington USA. And it starts getting really cold in September! So I'm sure that's why.
2:03 tooooo cuutttteeeeee
Love your channel! With all the recent natural disasters, I was wondering if you have any advice for leopard gecko parents for mandatory evacuations and/or other emergencies. There isn't much info about reptile-specific emergency preparedness online. It would make a great video!
Thanks for the info
no problem :)
BenCalixto08 that’s completely normal. I would keep the warm side temp between 32 and 34 though
@@fionashepley478 ok thanks, and the night time temp?
BenCalixto08 you can keep it the same
Please do a video like this for crested geckos
Thank you leopard Gecko my Leopard Gecko is very healthy her name is Calci She is an albino Leopard Gecko I'm now very happy she was in a bad spot living in a pet store with only one hide and treated like a desert lizard Thank you.
It’s my first year with a Leo and I’m so nervous because he won’t eat and I know it’s normal, but it’s still scary
Thank you for a very informative video, as usual :)
Sorry this isn’t related to the video but how old do you think a crested gecko should have a waxworm? And how old should they have a cricket? (in your opinion) and How many should they have per month?
Awesome 😎
thanks :D
Hi my female leopard gecko Luna stopped eating at the beginning of February she's not eating since we keep offering meal worm, wax worms & crickets but she wants nothing she has shed twice over this period which she ate. Her weight has gone from 84g (quite chunky since she was spayed) to 78g. She's doing small wee's & the odd poo. She's still active roaming around her Viv every night & she comes out & runs around the room like she's always done. Should we be panicking and getting her to the vets now?
Nice
Could you do a year in the life of a Crested gecko? Thank you
My female goes off food like crazy it drives me nuts I always panic but then I take her to a vet and nothing is wrong.
I live in nz so the seasons are opposite to yours. Out of interest, would all these behaviours be at different times?
Does shedding change during different months ? My leopard gecko has had some trouble shedding these past couple sheds ? Its been around the fifties to thirty’s
||-//
Shedding happens about every month but just make sure your humid hide is nice and moist.
poor shedding can be down to dehydration, low humidity, and sometimes lacking in some vitamins and minerals. I do find once they have one bad shed, the next one or two may be a little bad. But I'd check you have a humid/shedding hide.
Leopard Gecko thanks so much!
Make sure the tank humidity stays at 40-55%, measured by a digital hygrometer. Your gecko is having trouble because it’s drier in the winter. If they don’t use the humid hide mist the tank when they’re in shed
I named my Gecko GIZMO cuz GREMLINS is my absolute favourite movie of all time.
SAME!!! I love that film. Christmas is coming up, gunna get my Gremlins boxset out 😂
Very nice video 👍🐬🍃🌿🌱
thank you :)
this was awesome can u do a vid like this but about crested geckos
thank you :) tbh i don't notice too much difference with my crestie.
I got my first leopard gecko 2 weeks ago and watching this made me realize that he's probably going into brumation cuz he is slowing down it seems, at least I hope everything is going alright XD
How much do Leos cost a month? I’m hoping to get one soon.
Thanks this was very educational and hepful😁

hey! i got my vivarium and other items required for my first gecko in the post today. i’m worried because the heat mat covers half of the vivarium, rather than a third. i’m not at ease to get a new one anytime soon but am supposed to be collecting my leopard gecko from a breeder next weekend. is the 50% covering heat matt still suitable? please help :)
helena santos that’s fine :)
Hello! What time should I feed my gecko. Sun goes down at 8. I usually go out about every night should I feed him at 5 PM or 10:30 PM?
He’s more likely to be out and about at 10:30, but you can feed him at any time of day.
Thank you so much for this information!
no problem :)
Hi guys!
and welcome to today's video :)
