the biggest waste of time for artists is, paradoxically, making the art itself. This statement stems from the idea that much of our creative process is shackled by our egos, and it's only by stepping away from this ego-driven approach that we can unlock the true potential of our art careers.
My journey into the art world started in art school, a place I entered without even having held a pencil for drawing purposes. Yet, within a year, my progress was so significant that my artwork was displayed alongside the best students. This recognition, rather than filling me with confidence, sparked a sense of insecurity within me. It pushed me to explore and master new mediums, from watercolor to poetry, eventually leading me to win prestigious awards. However, the satisfaction from these accomplishments was fleeting, as new insecurities soon surfaced, driving me to even invent my own medium: painting with lightning from the sky.
This cycle of chasing after a higher self, motivated by insecurities and the need for validation, was nothing but a manifestation of my ego. It was a realization that hit me hard: the pursuit of artistic skill and recognition wasn't about expressing my true self but rather about seeking approval and fearing judgment from others.
Through this video, I share insights into how this ego treadmill affects many artists, citing my own experiences and the societal pressures that lead to a stifling of genuine self-expression. I discuss how the most renowned artists have managed to detach their self-worth from their art, focusing on creation without self-judgment. The examples of artists who embrace their unique styles, regardless of the public perception or technical proficiency, serve as powerful reminders of what artistry truly means.

I’ve already bought your art residency, and I definitely think this is worth the money. I just started my UA-cam channel and this course is going to greatly help me as it’s packed with a full of information that I haven’t seen anywhere else. So thank you very much for creating the course!🎉
Awesome, thank you! Make sure to check it again after a couple of weeks. I'll be uploading more and more sections throughout the next month or two and then the price will increase. You will obviously have access to all the updates and extra content that is going to be added in those months for free.
Also if you would have any questions or things that are unclear, send me on creativeconnect@driesketels.com
Have a great weekend!
Selling bs is egotistical though. That person was selling kids drawings for thousands of dollars. I know deep down inside that im selling junk to stupid people with money. There isnt passion in it if you put a price tag on it like that. Its a dead giveaway that you're not in it for the love.
Good art will cause people to empty their pockets even if its not for sale. No one looks at junk and says "Take my money" unless its fast food, sex or drugs. Or its expensive.
The price is the trick to selling junk. Yezzy was a clear example of that. Expensive bum clothing. Balenciaga. Expensive China-made dad shoes. Take a dump, put a high price on it and what do you have? Expensive shit.
The real art is when others would have to become you in order to recreate what you do. It will sell itself. Start low and then when demand increases, so does your price.
Love the contrast principle in that sentence: "No one looks at junk and says "Take my money" unless its fast food, sex or drugs. Or its expensive." it's very funny.
fast food, sex, drug or expensive... that's 50% of the world?
Embracing the journey of discovery and simply knowing that my art is just the product of the process has helped me to let go of comparison and perfectionism.
Absolutely! Trusting the process more and more as I grow older.
Tracey Enim is selling herself really not her drawings. It's about having 'a name'. She could draw a poo and someone will buy it. But if I drew a poo I'd be ridiculed and noone would buy it. And for those of us not interested in that it's a different story.
Absolutely agree!

You are only as good as the average of your 5 best friends. If you surround yourself with like minded people that make money from their art you dramatically increase your own bank account. You need a community of business focused artists. Check out my online artist residency and start to feel understood and valued by like minded artists.
There is a good book that deals with this in one of the chapters. The Mastery of Self by Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. In Chapter 8 he goes into goal setting and how it can become a trap by your insecurities and ego.
Based on what you know about me from the videos. Would you recommend the book or not really or not sure?
🙌🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏
I racommanded this video to my son, a young musician, because you can see the same thing in every kind of art!
You have to stop caring what people could think of you and your art!
The only thing that’s important
is what you really and truly want to do.
From your heart,
without restrictions of any kind!
Amazing video, thank you so much!
Hey I just want to say thank you for making these videos. I love how candid and real you are.
Glad you like them! And thanks for letting me know, sometimes I don't even know why I'm making these tbh hahaha XD
It is the connections to the art world, the galleries, and the dealers that the artists who have the most success have. The Masters degree professors who oversee their thesis, and others in their circle of power Elie have that make the greatest difference. Healthy ego and confidence is the default for artist from day one.
Such a great video!❤
Osho Quotes on Ego
"Ego does not exist anywhere else except in human beings, and ego starts growing as the child grows. The parents, the schools, colleges, university, they all help to strengthen the ego for the simple reason that for centuries man had to struggle to survive and the idea has become a fixation, a deep unconscious conditioning, that only strong egos can survive in the struggle of life. Life has become just a struggle to survive. And scientists have made it even more convincing with the theory of the survival of the fittest. So we help every child to become more and more strong in the ego, and it is there that the problem arises.
Then listen to Fernando Pessoa - Tabacaria… 🙏🏼😊
Thanks for clarification. That's very interesting. I take a look at Fernando Pessoa - Tabacaria
I love this video, dude! I've been following you for a while, it really helps me as an artist. I hope you have a good day :)
Nice to hear that Rhiannon. Wish you a great follow up of the day as well.
You are a FEAST for the Brain, Dries - a continuous stream of consciousness that will only IMPROVE My thoughts about My Art! Thank you, Kindly! 🙂
Wow, thank you. Have a great weekend Deborah!
You, as well, Dries! By the way... I finished my DUNGEONS & DRAGONS collage 2 days ago!! YAY! I will send a pic to your email address, along with the 'story' that goes with it. 🙂@@driesketels
Thanks for vocalizing this. It needs to be said
Tracy came in at the right time
And place. Same for all the artist shown. It’s mostly concept vs technique. Art world doesn’t care about technique much.
My attempts at painting do not allow much room for ego...LOL i am not good at it and the frustration level is HUGE. I can see an improvement though, and that part is very exciting. it gives me hope that someday I may master this!
Thank you for talking about the underlying issues that people never speak about. As artist I have been going through a mental paralysis since three years, its now that I have come to realise what the real problem is. These videos are very relatable and helpful to face the truth. I love your content, it comes across as authentic. Hope you keep doing the same. Thanks :)
I'm always curious when looking at artworks to discern the great marketing from the true artistic power of expression.
Well you learned didn’t you.
Not sure what you mean?
Amazing video again
Always nice to find you in the comments. Thanks.
