Our best IBC watertank set-up yet [off-grid gravity fed irrigation system]

  • This week we wanted to fix some of the issues we had last summer with our two IBC tanks that supply water to the garden. As Maarten took them apart he figured out what went wrong, but we went ahead and moved them, put the plactic on properly and put them on top of each other. Will this be the last time we move them?

    New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten, our toddler Puck and baby Bo on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

    Hey, guys, love the 'doppel-decker' IBC...! The air tube is genius. Can you tell me what is the elevation above the garden now, in metres near enough....? Does the flow rate and pressure exceed what you were getting from the pump previously? I think at the end Maarten said it does, but how much better? Did you measure flow rates before and after? Or time to fill a bucket..?
    And did you move the IBC set up mainly to save power from pump use? Please advise as I am looking at this issue for someone else....TIA :)

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  2 роки тому +6

      Hi Mark, the bottom of the tank is now +- 5 meter above the taps in the garden. We use 32mm pipe between the tank and the taps and after that it is ordinary gardenhose (18 mm?!) the difference between before and after isn’t that much (because it is just that one tank difference) so I didn’t bother measuring it. Now that the air is out of the system it fills a 15 liter bucket in about 10 seconds, which is overkill for us 😂. Like I said in the video we mainly installed the tanks as a battery so we can run the pump during the day on the solarpanels without using the batteries. We usually water the garden before the sun is on the panels. Our pump would still be able to move more water because we have a strong pump with 40 mm pipe. I hope this helps. Cheers, Maarten.

      @@ourportuguesehomestead Yeah that's good info. Is the tank now above the outdoor kitchen, or do you still need to pump to there?

    • @ourportuguesehomestead

      No these tanks are just for the garden and are on level with the kitchen. We have a third tank 5+ meters above the kitchen on the hill for household use.

      Yes the same 40 mm pipe and the pump should be able to pump water all the way to the top of our land (50 meters up)

    You probably know this, but if the joint has an o ring or gasket, you don´t need teflon. Also, when assembling them, if you coat the rubber o rings and gaskets with vaseline, it´ll make a much tighter seal and protect the rubber from rotting.

    • @ourportuguesehomestead

      Yes I only used teflon on the connections that don’t have gaskets or rings. The vaseline is a great tip and I’ll incorporate it in the next install (if it ever needs to be done again haha)

    Nou krijg je natuurlijk wel algengroei in die doorzichtige plastic slang. En dat gaat ook je eventueel nog later toe te voegen "rode balletje" dan op een gegeven moment vastzetten in de buis. Dus dan moet je goed checken of het rode balletje nog wel de "huidige" waterstand aangeeft, of een ouder maximum waarbij het balletje is vast komen te zitten (waarna de waterstand is gezakt).

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  2 роки тому

      Ik zit er aan te denken om een flap van het zwarte plastic zeil over de slang te hangen, maar ik denk ook dat het water vaak genoeg ververst wordt in het slangetje dat de algengroei wel mee zal vallen.

    You'll have to cover the Clear hose as well. It will get green algae over time if it gets direct continuously direct sunlight. I had to clean a hose of a Huge water tank (Staal) which had that on the side. It was covered with a customized cover (goot / Gutter plastic) vertically attached. However, it still got that green thing. I would've made a special hole for the "water level" measurement hose.

    One small comment, there is no need to pull out the tank from the cage, since you don't cover the bottom. When the tank is empty, the plastic is flexible enough to pull down the black tarp "skirt" all the way to the bottom. All that is needed is to disassemble the two horizontal bars on the top and cut the tarp to measure.

    Marten; I use IBC tanks to treat grey and black water here in california. I have a off grid place in Hawaii I use them for collecting water from roof as everyone does there. Here in California I collect all rain water and treated Grey into above ground swimming pools. I have almost 50000 gals now, i have 3 18ft dia, 1 24 ft diameter and 1 18foot dia that is 6ft high a custom one, will put up another 24ft tak this summer ...getting close to 60K gal. The above grd pools are the cheapest per gallon storage. I keep them covered to keep out debris and sun. I have learned a lot about making them from scratch also. I need to make some videos. My system enables us to keep our garden even during draught. Regarding IBS, you can drill them and tap them for pipe threads. here I have tapped up to 2inch pipe holes. Get a 6inch long pc of steel pipe with threads on at least one end. Cut hole in tank just smaller than threaded end of pipe, Push and turn the steel pipe into that hole.. It will cut threads, you can then thread in PVC fittings etc ...you dont need a holding nut on inside. In this way you put fittings anywhere on the tank. In hawaii i put a 3/4 inch pipe tap at bottom and attached pvc ball valve , I have 4 tanks tied together each with a 3/4 inch pvc ball valve on it. the smaller valve much easier to turn. also i painted my hawaii catchment tanks with water based asphalt emulsion , two coats , to block light. i then painted them wht ( latex works) to keep them cooler..they are in some sun, but plan to put a roof over them . SOmeone suggested Vasoline on your fittings..yes that is good, but I have found the wax ring that is used between toilet and floor much more robust , heavy grease/wax, perfect for plumbing fittings. It seals small leaks , prevents corrosion keeps fittings from seizing up, easier to disassemble. Vasoline is light grease which will evaporate. The toilet wax will last much longer outside. I coat metal pipes in it to prevent rust. My hawaii place i use a bit over 400watts of solar it runs all lights and a small chest freezer I use as refrig. I have it on timer comes on 2 times a day , 9 and 1pm. ( I store solar E as cold in bottom of freezer) Bottom has all 1gallon jugs of water , it just keeps them with ice crystals in them, a 1inch foam board sits on top of them. Inverter is 100watts , but could be smaller, freezer only uses 120watts when running. I am Master degree Engineer, 68yr old, expert in RF/Microwave/GPS/Sat systems, but I fixed ny own cars, still, have since i was 16. I also have a 6000wtt solar system here in california that over ten people get all there electricity from.

    Why don't you use a flexible garden hose with perhaps a spray head so you can maneuver it to all the areas of your tanks to clean them.

Maybe it sounds not Lekker but would love to hear anyway?😅Why didn't you build the kitchen, compost toilet, (bathroom) nearer to the house? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️. Take care Greatings Melinda from SA🙏🏻🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

      We prefer to have the toilet at a bit of a distance in case it ever smells (it shouldn’t with enough sawdust but still). And we couldn’t put the kitchen right next to the yurt because we are on a hill and there is no flat spot there

    The reason for adapting the clear vinyl hose into the top cap of the bottom tank is...physics.
    If the cap allowed no air to escape..the incoming water would compress the air into an area under the cap....
    and would stop water inflow when the pressure of the air equals the pressure of the incoming water.
    By placing the hose in the cap and taking it up to the height of the top of the top tank....the air can all be replaced by the incoming water....and the bottom tank is always full if there is water in the top tank...and the valve on the top tank is open to feed into the bottom tank.
    Then when the top tank is full the pressure available from the outlet of the bottom tank will be at it's highest....

    Painting the the tanks black also works like the plastic…as far as stopping the algae. But when you have plastic, you use plastic!

    • @ourportuguesehomestead

      We used what we had, but I(Maarten) also looked at painted IBCs here and found that on most of them the paint cracked and or flaked after just a year or two. My theory is that the high temperature and the flexing of the plastic blatter causes it to crack. Painting might work better in more temperate climates.

    To "cover" the IBC to stop degradation of the plastic and algae growth you can use ordinary house paint...pick a dark colour like mid to dark blue and it will look just right for water....

    Would a power Hose have done an easier and faster job of those tanks?

  • @mfsxm
    @mfsxm 2 роки тому

    Why would you put the tanks on top of each other? Wouldn't the top one put too much weight on the one underneath? For great pressure, I'd have to build a ramp or little tower for both. I think you would get greater pressure. We do build on Hills (Bergen) when there's one. My father was Portuguese, living in Curacao. He did build some Concrete tanks (Water bakken) like 8 times the size of those IBC water tanks. he did it mostly on a high leveled place. You are doing great.

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  2 роки тому

      No they're made to be stacked with liquid in them. Pressure was fine before because we have them two terraces above the garden. This just looks tidier, and would help with pressure if you don't have the hight difference we have.

    • @ourportuguesehomestead

      Cutting them open is not really an option in this setup and cleaning them completely is not really necessary for garden irrigation (unless you do drip irrigation)

      If you needed to a filter could be placed on the outlet.....

  • @JohnSmith-yv6eq
    @JohnSmith-yv6eq 2 роки тому

    If you have a floating ball valve in the top tank inlet line (the water line coming from the pump) and put a pressure sensing cut off switch on the outlet of the pump...when the pump has filled both tanks the float valve stops incoming water, the pressure in the feed line from the pump rises; the sensor activates and switches the pump off....until the level in the tank drops....
    You can use this system on the kitchen IBC as well......just T off the kitchen feed after the sensor switch....
    That would maximise your use of electricity produced by the solar system without needing your monitoring it...just turn the pump on in the morning and off at night?

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  2 роки тому

      The pump asks a lot from the solar system, so we prefer to run it only in the middle of the day when it can run solely from the panels. I wouldn’t want to risk it turning on at night or early morning when it would drain the batteries. It’s not too much hassle to just keep an eye on the tanks

  • @authorcharlieboring

    • @ourportuguesehomestead
      @ourportuguesehomestead  2 роки тому +3

      It is hard to find good paint for this purpose and our climate. I have seen a few people around here that used paint and because the plastic blatter flexes a lot with use they tend to crack or flake after a year or two. This plastic lasts longer (as long as the wind doesn’t rip it).
