What Happens When You Push a 4x4 to the Limit in Alaska's Winter?

- Come along on an amazing off-road adventure through the Alaska outback traveling in a highly modified Toyota 4Runner. We are celebrating Jason Beard's birthday. But it isn't all fun and games - Jason's rig suffered a major steering failure rending it unable to limp out under its own power. We employed a risky towing technique of fixing the tires straight and then winching it tight to the 4runner bumper and dragging it out. WOW...all this and the highest temperature was 12 degrees Fahrenheit!
We deployed a risky method of offroad recovery via a BUMPER tow method. Watch till the end to see if we made it back home safe!
Nobody left behind!

Do any of you know the name of that type of towing when you tie up the disabled vehicle tight to the rear bumper like that for a trail recovery?
@@McSpeedAlaskanAdventures bumper towing
@ that’s it? I guess I was making it over complicated in my mind. But yes. Bumper to bumper as tight as possible and then hang on for the crazy. I didn’t capture everything as it took a long time to get out and we did some ping pong bouncing off trees (before getting it all the way tight) and some more ice sliding on hills as well as banging hard on obstacles. But it was fun (now that we are all home and warm in one piece).
@McSpeedAlaskanAdventures yea this looks pretty crazy
That tow was stressful lol even on me. No man left behind 🤘
@@LawlessOffroadAdventures it was nuts! Jason kept instinctively trying to steer it but the sector shaft had snapped off clean. We were just getting bumped along back there. Was a wild ride!
@McSpeedAlaskanAdventures had me a ride like that last fall, sunk my buggy into the Spanish river because the stearing ujoint stripped out launching me off a 15 foot drop into the river, they live to fight another day 😅🤙
@ when a steering gear goes out, there is very little you can do on the trail to fix it. Just have to drag it out. One of our guys lost his late model jeep gear on the trail. We were able to have someone get out and grab another and then we swapped it out on rye mud and ice with minimal tools. You can’t just get a Land Rover defender gear like that!!!! I’m glad you made it out okay. The Spanish River is awesome
Looks like a blast !!!
@@robertsiwicki4597 it was awesome!!!
This was the coolest experience! I would call a tow like that a bumper to bumper tow.
Yes! 100% all the way. Can’t wait to get out there again. My rear brakes showed up today.
Looked like fun, I need to get out of the shop hang out with you guys more haha
You’re always welcome! We have plenty of mud.
@ my freaking heater blower motor just went out, so it’s time for me to rip the whole interior out and do all the upgrades I’ve been putting off for the last year. I’ll be ready for spring riding I guess 🤷🏻♂️🤣
Cool video 👍 Looks like a fun trail!
@@chevycoloradoinalaska7018 either of your rigs would have been great out there.
Seriously fun, but there aint no fun until youhit those trails in trapper creek area, left at mile 114prks hwy, go all way to kroto creek, start your anventure there, trails go all way back to cache creek and yetna river, now once ya conquer those in the summer and winter then your a 4x4 GOD!! really gotta go check those out
Challenge accepted! We would
Actually love to do that area sooner than later.
Thus is sick
@@MikeBgarages 100% !!!!
That was a cold day but a fun experience. Glad i don't really need a chainsaw lol
@@johnkelly7191 it was awesome!!!!!!!
Thanks for the ride! And yeah don’t really need one until they get too low!
Cool truck!
@@SDune it is! I love the engine is stock which makes it just smooth as butter.
these guys are nuts.
That’s what makes it so much fun!
The suburban have anything done to the 350 ?
Nope. None stock. Just a loud exhaust.
3.4l and Rockwells ???
@@mryang3644 yep. It works. I assume the double transfer case reduction gives the mechanical leverage it needs.
X cross the straps next time you get pulled with no steering will hold you center
@@Xjtay1984 awesome tip!!!
Need to use high lock becauseow lock isn't fast enough
@@bradleymadosh911 agreed.
fuck hey aint much snow up there either
@@themag221 snow levels have been pitiful this year. Ice is nuts though.
@@McSpeedAlaskanAdventures its going to be a fun forest fire season !
@ I am afraid you are right
Seriously from lets plug a punctured tyre to lets go hunting.
@@JunaidAsmal yep! Next thing we will do is swap a radiator and hopefully go camping! Lol!
@McSpeedAlaskanAdventures how about doing some bounty mud it up hole)
Looks like a blast!
Was awesome…and stressful at the same time.
